Believe it or not: Chris Matthews destroys Grayson over reconciliation on ObamaCare

posted at 9:11 pm on January 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

I don’t know what to think anymore, guys. First he takes Howard Dean to the cleaners over his lame spin on Massachusetts, now this. Meanwhile, Jack Cafferty’s on CNN inveighing against the Democrats and political correctness seemingly every damned day. What’s next? David Shuster laying into some liberal for calling right-wingers “teabaggers”?

Are we seeing … realignment here?

More of this please.

This is just an example of a journalist trying to salvage any credibility they think they have left. They’re starting to dig their heels into the ground to keep from being dragged over the same cliff that the Obama, Pelosi, Reid troika are headed for. This is Chris Matthews pulling an Arlen Specter switcheroo; self-preservation pure and simple. And it’s too little too late…there’s too much of a paper trail to believe he’s sincere.

Left Coast Right Mind on January 22, 2010 at 10:28 PM

Tingles know what happened back in 94 and how Bill C was a two termer because of his walk back to the center. He also knows that Obama and the likes of Grayson would not walk back to center to save the election and hold power. He is trying to warn them to act like slick Willy and say only what they can do and stop promising the world and all that can be deliver is a lump of dirt.

Oh yeah. Tingles is savvy enough to know the hopium ain’t selling anymore and Obama is in deep shit. The problem is that the One is just as nuts a Grayson. Tingles hasn’t figured that one out yet.

Are we seeing … realignment here?

Or maybe two of the MSM’s biggest f-tards have started to realize just how ridiculous they are. And Mr. Tingle has the added worry of finding employment after MSNBC goes the way of Air America.

Infidoll on January 22, 2010 at 10:30 PM

Are we seeing … realignment here?

Well, yes and no. Matthews, in both this interview and the one with Howard “YEARGH!” Dean, seems to have grasped the meaning of Scott Brown’s election. The rest of the Dems are whistling past the graveyard on this one, ignoring the polls and acting more tone deaf than someone really tone deaf.

Chris Matthews, you get an “Attaboy!”

Yeah, but popcorn sales are going to be brisk as the media heads start to turn on the netnuts. It might not be too long before MSNBC follows in the foot steps of Air America.

pearson on January 22, 2010 at 10:31 PM

I think that the left has just run out of targets so they’re turning on each other. Matthews is frustrated that socialism failed so he’s just going Grandpa Simpson on everybody. I don’t see this as ANY change at all just a grumpy guy simply being contrary. I love how he lectures him though, heh. He who controls the gavel controls everything.

“You’re not arguing with me, you’re just disagreeing with everything I say.” “I am not.”

Seriously though, how is Harvard the number one law school in the country when their graduates don’t understand law at all?

Help me someone!!! I need to know why they are better than you or I.

Lance Murdock on January 22, 2010 at 9:45 PM

Inertia.

Don’t worry. The friction is coming fast. I thought the Ivy law schools lost all respect or dignity back in that pathetic suit they brought to the SCOTUS about trying to kick the military recrutiers off campus and still slop up federal dollars. That was pretty sad, academically.

borntoraisehogs on January 22, 2010 at 10:33 PM

Infidoll on January 22, 2010 at 10:30 PM

Um, I not sure about that. They definitely realize what the Dems don’t: the public doesn’t want this bill. I think Matthews still believes all this socialist pap is good for the country. He just has a realistic view of its getting done.

But perhaps you’re right. If Matthews was still acting like a fool, he would be calling for an end to the filibuster and urging the Dems to use reconciliation.

Chris, buddy, what the hell happened to you? Did Scott Brown make the Obama beer goggles wear off? If so, looking at Grayson without the hopechangeygoggles definitely would make the thrill in his leg disappear.

No, Grayson is an embarrassment to the species. This guy gives me a serious case of the creeps. He’s like something that crawled out of a very dark place. And stupid + malevolent is an ugly combination.

coppertop on January 22, 2010 at 10:43 PM

Bet when Grayson (btw shouldn’t his nickname be plugs? I mean his show a lot worse than Biden) agreed to show up on this program he was expecting a bunch of softballs after Chris’s silk glove care with the moonbat population for several years now.

Kelligan on January 22, 2010 at 10:44 PM

My guess is, Matthews feels it’s his duty to try to divert any negatives on this away from Obama, and onto anyone, and everyone else. Even democrats from Congress.

I can’t see him ever pandering, or going centrist, after what we’ve witnessed this past year.

Another thought would be ratings. Perhaps Comcast has put out the memo. If, and when the sale is final….pink slips are going out, if certain people don’t get their act together, and try to get ratings back up? There’s always other kids out there, starving for a job, that would do it, exactly as ordered. Even if it meant being unbiased.

capejasmine on January 22, 2010 at 10:52 PM

That is unbelievable. That may be the most enjoyable experience I’ve ever had watching Chris Matthews. About once a year he has a lucid moment or two and then reverts back to being an asshat.

You know, that video of Matthews was kind of spooky. I think the guy is on the edge mentally – honestly. He seems alternately desperate and mockingly hopeful. NathanG on January 22, 2010 at 11:45 PM

I dunno, but it doesn’t seem that Grayson comes off all that crazy here. Naive, yes — and gullible — but not exactly crazy.

Remember that Pelosi’s claim on the Speaker’s position is because she ran a multi-year plan to put Dems into the majority in the House by recruiting “DINOs” and lying their ass off to try to sound normal. This led to a flood of n00bs in the House who think Pelosi’s magic got ‘em in there.

So when she turns around and says you can help Tink by saying, “I do believe”, I think she gets a lot more Reps to go along than would otherwise be plausible. And when Pelosi says, and other Reps nod, then Grayson thinks it sounds pretty reasonable.

And when Pelosi — who, I’m sure, tells everyone within earshot that Dems are God’s anointed — says one thing….and some puffing journalist says something else….who is Grayson going to believe?

I’m with you Mr Arrogant. WE ARE SO, SO lucky that the perfect storm peaked when it did and we weren’t too late.

I don’t trust these guys one bit and rules, tradition, even the Constitution mean nothing to them. Who wulda thunk they’d be so stupid to get this close to the cliff before the people could put the brakes on? It’s truly ironic that Kennedy’s death allowed us to even ‘reach the brake pedal’ thru the special election and get it stopped – at least for the moment – via Brown’s election. A sign from above?

The progressives are so, so close…I’m afraid they couldn’t resist trying it to satisfy their insatiable desire for power and total control and to appease the netroots like Grayson.

Christ Matthews job is to shame democrats and bring them back in line.
As soon as he’s achieved that he will rekindle that tingle.

A reconciliation instruction (Budget Reconciliation) is a provision in a budget resolution directing one or more committees to submit legislation changing existing law in order to bring spending, revenues, or the debt-limit into conformity with the budget resolution.

The HCR Act, or whatever it’s being called nowadays, is not existing law, so it does not qualify for the reconciliation process. It has to pass before it can be reconciled. Matthews was spot on. It’ll never survive the first point of order.

MarkT on January 23, 2010 at 12:54 AM

Chrissy really wants healthcare to pass. He’s just acting like an “Assistant Senate Whip”.
“Grayson, they ain’t got the votes!”

I’m not sure Grayson knew how long Matthews had actually worked on the Hill. But I think the reason he didn’t light into Matthews was that he could sense that no matter how nasty he was, he’d have his tuckus handed to him by Matthews, who could make Grayson’s famous “outrage” look like patty-cake.

eeyore on January 23, 2010 at 1:31 AM

I started watching Matthews back during the Clinton administration and actually thought he was a republican the way he went after them. Then, of course, I found out differently when he started after Bush. I quit watching him then.

ReformedAndDangerous on January 23, 2010 at 1:43 AM

That was the OLD rules, remember? “What rules? We don’t need no stinkin’ rules.”

Put what Grayson said along with the memo on Free Press and these idiots might be just dumb enough to go for it. If Grayson is crazy enough to say what he did with a straight face…they might be crazy enough to do it.

SEIU has already threatened to sit on the sidelines in 2010 if they don’t pass it, specifically with the union excise tax exemption. Bluff? I don’t know but I don’t think we should be getting too complacent just yet.

I think if they try it will be their absolute doom and the people would back the Repubs for using every tactic in their grasp to delay ANY legislation not necessary to fund the military and necessary governemnt functions until the new Republican MAJORITY congress is seated in Jan 2011.

I also think the public – especially the Tea Party people, and I’m one – have had the sh*t scared out of them by these people and will not ever let my/their guard down again. The Republicans should also be aware that there’s going to be a new way of doing business (governing) in DC. I really don’t think ANYBODY is a 100% safe. Brown’s election proved it.

The internet, new media, conservative web sites, blogs and radio talkers have changed the lay of the electorial battlegrounds forever – for the good. But OUR army has to be bigger and smarter than their army and right now it is.

I’m in Omaha and donated to Brown twice. I have a special email group list to all of my concervative friends (many of whom say they donated too)and we regulary pass things along to each other. They have their own lists, just as I’m sure just as you do. The speed that information flows in a viral manner is almost instantaneous.

Knowledge = Power and “We the people” will not let us go back to the old way of doing business.

vietvet on January 23, 2010 at 1:58 AM

Grayson is a complete idiot. I personally cannot stand Matthews, but in this case he’s absolutely right. Not only is this impossible using the Senate rules, the Democratic Senators no longer have the will to do it. This bill has become a live grenade and no one wants to be holding it when it goes off. Everyone wants to follow and no one wants to lead. They’re like sheep in a pasture running from a wolf. The herdsmen is gone and the sheep are running every which way. Sheer panic is what you’re seeing.

Django on January 23, 2010 at 4:07 AM

I think they are seriously considering reconciliation. Matthews is wrong. Grayson knows what he’s talking about.

They’ve already passed a bill. All they need is for the House to pass it.

Look at this plan.

They are planning on passing a SECOND bill. The House would pass it first, then the Senate(with only 51 votes), and THEN the House would pass the original healthcare bill.

Again – they are SERIOUSLY considering this. I don’t think Grayson is joking at all. Did you listen to Obama yesterday? He is dead serious, he is angry, he is not giving up.

There IS a way for Republicans to beat this. Just like the filibuster, they can KEEP offering amendments. They just have to never stop. They have to ETERNALLY offer amendments until the Democrats feel the heat from the public and finally withdraw.

If the Dems choose this route, it is our LAST gasp. The Republicans have to KEEP offering amendments until it drags on for days, weeks, maybe even MONTHS – until the Dems start feeling the heat from the public and give up.

If they choose this route, that is our last hope. AP, Ed, please make the people aware. Make our representatives aware. Tell them to prepare for this. Tell them to get a thousand amendments ready, whatever they have to do. I absolutely think this is coming.

Sixth Guard on January 23, 2010 at 5:28 AM

Nice segment with Grayson, but in the very next segment in his show, he couldn’t resist taking shots at Michelle Bachman before playing her back and forth with Specter.

I love Bachman because she has a great way of getting under the skin of liberals. And she takes no guff from Barney Frank.

Strange days. My gut tells me that the propagandists are trying to salvage some sense of journalistic integrity, since Goebbels-ian spin would be as naked as the very imperious acts of 0bama and his minions are attempting to do to us.

That said, they too are leftists to the core, like the proverbial leopard that will not change his spots. They will fake it until enough time has passed and then they’ll go back to being propagandists.

As Churchill (I think) once said about the Germans: The Hun is always either at your throat or at your feet. Substitute Leftists for Hun and you get the idea.

Nothing more clearly shows how far we’ve fallen as a nation, and what severe, if not fatal damage the left has done to America than the sight of these two in positions of power. That Chris Matthews can be a prominent American journalist and Grayson a prominent Am. politician is mind-boggling.

I’m glad Brown won too, but he’s just another foot soldier to be used by our side to keep fighting this war. Barely a few weeks ago, the racist, terrorist-loving, anti-American Obama-appointed AG, Eric Holder, used his power to rescue the Christmas bomber from the Am. military/intelligence services. We still have the far left in control of most, if not all of our primary American institutions. Don’t let up the fight one whit. These people must be hounded and destroyed, if they refuse to convert.

His book “Hardball” is one of the best political books (and I’ve read dozens) that I’ve ever read. He knows how DC works.

I think he knows the party is over and he’s dropped the mask that has gotten headlines and links over the past year. The far left Dems are in suicide mode and he’s worried about the party as a whole.

The political winds have shifted. I have little use for those who blow with those winds. David Brooks least of all.
His finger is in the air and it’s not the same finger he’s been giving to us conservatives.

Yes, he can write some good stuff, when it suits HIM!

Golly, Chris Matthews asking some real questions to a lib (and getting no real response)

Jeepers!! I feel all tingly!!

Seriously though, how is Harvard the number one law school in the country when their graduates don’t understand law at all?

Help me someone!!! I need to know why they are better than you or I.

Lance Murdock on January 22, 2010 at 9:45 PM

That brilliant supermodel Harvard Law graduate Michelle Obama failed her first attempt at the Illinois bar exam. Makes one wonder what exactly they teach at Harvard Law. Is it law, or is it the kind of Liberal/Commie/anti-American b.s. that the Obamas are so fond of spouting?

AZCoyote on January 23, 2010 at 9:52 AM

Don’t get too carried away. This just means the tingle is gone…

But really, this all means one thing, the winds have shifted and the empty lightweights are being blown around by it.

Cool.

When you try to ram it to the people, be prepared to reenact the “shower scene” from a bad prison movie and remember those immortal words … “Don’t drop the soap”

Grayson is a vile smartass. He had no answer because he had no knowledge. Reconciliation? What?

donh525 on January 23, 2010 at 10:09 AM

Mr. Grayson took over as the new representative of the Shadows after Mr. Morden died.

Maybe Matthews is looking to move to a network with good ratings.

Yea, Brooks is a pompous blowhard, that’s why it was such a treat to hear him criticize the administration after he spent the better part of a year writing glowing tributes to Obama. He drank the kool aid, now he’s sick. Arrogant people don’t like playing the fool.

scalleywag on January 23, 2010 at 10:12 AM

Are we seeing … realignment here?

I believe we are seeing Matthews anger at the Democrats for dropping the ball. I think he is furious with them and is taking his anger by humiliating whoever will come on his show. He is sooo partisan in his coverage he is now “hanging them high” because they haven’t got the job done.

Can’t wait for his Christmas interview with Obama in two years where he picks him apart for being a false prophet.

Er, make that being played the fool. Mo coffee.

scalleywag on January 23, 2010 at 10:15 AM

Don’t know what to think, but would be pleased if the left wakes up and starts to show some common sense. Would also like it if both sides of the aisle in the House and the Senate could start working together with the best interests of the country at heart. Believe it or not, there was a time when they did. Maybe this is another message MA was sending?

jeanie on January 23, 2010 at 10:16 AM

Weiner is an idiot. Obamacare is dead, period. Selling lies about it won’t change anything. Grayson is insane. He has no friggin’ idea what he’s talking about.

Matthews thinks his program is about reality? That’s a hoot.
