Specter to Bachmann: Act like a lady

posted at 4:21 pm on January 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

Good thing he’s a Democrat now. Otherwise this might have been pretty offensive.

When Specter tried to counter, Bachmann, darling of the Tea Party movement, kept on talking, which didn’t sit well with the one-time Philadelphia DA, who is a stickler for politeness and protocol.

“I’m going to treat you like a lady,” Mr. Specter shot back. “Now act like one.”

Ms. Bachmann replied, “I am a lady.”…

Bachmann is hardly a beloved figure in Democratic circles. But how many liberal women, whom Specter badly needs to defeat front-running Paul [sic] Toomey, would appreciate being told to “act like a lady” during a male debate partner?

They seem okay with stuff like this; why shouldn’t they forgive Specter a transgression? Or rather, two transgressions: Remember when he called Laura Ingraham “young lady” during a radio argument last year? I’m inclined to chalk this all up to grampa-ism — he is, what, about a hundred now? — but if he starts referring to conservative women as “dames” or “broads,” someone’s really going to have to pull him aside. Maybe Harry Reid can do it. He’s pretty up-to-date on cultural sensitivities, no?

For the record, Specter now trails “Paul” Toomey by nine points among likely voters. If not for Reid, his would be the must-see concession speech of November 2010. Exit question: Do we get to add words to Specter’s quote to make it more damning too, or is that sort of thing reserved for liberals like Maureen Dowd? Click the image to listen.

Maybe Specter should act like a statesman?

El_Terrible on January 21, 2010 at 4:22 PM

Too bad Specter doesn’t act like a gentleman.

Perhaps Specter should quit acting like a little girl.

Bachmann to Specter: “Stop acting like a little girl.”

What do you mean by “act like a lady” Arlen?

Be seen and not heard?
Lay down and roll over?
submit?

Tell us Arlen…

Grandpa-ism; no doubt true. And yes, it’s doubly good that he’s a Dem now, lest this incident attract front page attention from the MSM.

Good point, AP. I couldn’t help but hear “Act like a lady, boy!”

Ms. Bachmann replied, “I am a lady.”…

Yes mam you are and a very composed lady when confronted with an irascible old man.

fourdeucer on January 21, 2010 at 4:27 PM

Liberals are annoying. I know Michelle Bachman understands this with Nancy Pelosi leading the House. I admire Michelle’s courage and her presistence. She is one of the very few worth saving in the House. Those Libs are all wee-weed up this week because their world has crashed down upon them. Tough.

BetseyRoss on January 21, 2010 at 4:28 PM

I have no problem with this: from the simple fact that it will do nothing to salvage Specter’s sinking cred from both sides of the aisle.

This ill advised burst has delicious intimations of sexism.

Geochelone on January 21, 2010 at 4:28 PM

LOL … “The Ghoul” Spector has sat by and allowed his liberal fiends to call Michelle every name in the book … unending smears against her, her reputation, and her family.

That ain’t no way to treat a lady …

Now he demands HER to act like one?

Hilarious!

Democrats only promote chivalry when they have a pissed off woman on their six.

HondaV65 on January 21, 2010 at 4:28 PM

Hannity is tearing Specter a new one on this right now.

rockmom on January 21, 2010 at 4:29 PM

Lady Bachmann speaks truth to waning power.

Me thinks the left is quite testy today… probably haven’t slept well the last two nights.

petunia on January 21, 2010 at 4:29 PM

I doubt they could win it, but wouldn’t a presidential run by Palin and Bachmann be epic- two gorgeous sharp women who speak their minds? Can you imagine what great TV it would be?

Kristamatic on January 21, 2010 at 4:29 PM

Sheesh…

Anyone notice Zogby’s announcement re: IBOPE today.

Is it possible that there is a neat little link between Zogby and Soros.

Who owns Brazil now?

Is it possible that Soros has a bunch of bots following people on the internet?

Intrigue.

I’m a lawyer. I can’t count the number of times some smug old codger, aware that he can’t make his case, condescendingly belittles me in front of the judge as a “nice young lady.” As much as it puts me in a blinding, seething rage, it’s invariably a signal that I’m winning the argument.

How pathetic

Defector01 on January 21, 2010 at 4:36 PM

“I’m going to treat you like a lady,” Mr. Specter shot back. “Now act like one.”

That sounds like something he should be saying to our limp-wristed, silly POTUS.

Time to exit Stage Left, Specter. You’re finished.

And speaking of wind, the Winds Of Change just went blowing through Massachuetts, Arlen, and there is no reason for them not to be headed for Pennsylvania next!

Just a little food for thought, Turncoat!

Putting on my Liberal hat: You have to excuse Mr. Specter. You see he grew up in a time when the term, ‘Act like a lady’ was a common phrase. As a matter of fact, it was a term of endearment. He is actually complimenting Mrs. Bachmann.

How’d I do?
