Politico: Democrats’ ObamaCare talks collapsing?
posted at 9:21 pm on January 21, 2010 by Allahpundit
I know, I know — “but what about what Paul Ryan said?” I don’t know whose information is most current right now. All I can do is show you what I’m seeing.
Believe it or not, this rather significant tidbit is buried about halfway down in Politico’s story:
Part of the negotiations center on whether Reid can provide an ironclad guarantee that the Senate will not leave the House in the lurch, aides said. If the House agrees to pass the Senate bill with a companion measure — or a “cleanup” bill — to make fixes, they want to know that the Senate will indeed pass it, too.
There was some talk among Senate leadership on Thursday of putting together a letter signed by 51 Democratic senators pledging to pass a cleanup bill if the House would pass the Senate bill. But that effort fizzled when support for it didn’t materialize, insiders said.
“The Senate moderates’ viewpoint is, ‘We passed our bill. We’re not going to spend three weeks on some other bill,’” said a Democratic lobbyist who represents clients pushing for reform.
“There’s a real possibility it doesn’t get through,” said another Democratic lobbyist.
TPM’s hearing something similar about Senate Dems having “moved on to other, newer priorities,” with even Durbin sounding noncommittal about whether the House should press ahead. The million-dollar question: If they’ve got 51 true-blue Dems (or 50, with Biden as the tiebreaker) willing to go to the mat for the dream of Ted Kennedy’s life or whatever, why can’t the lucky 51 simply pledge themselves to reconciliation now? Are they … short of 51?
A Senate staffer told TPM yesterday that the feeling among the Democratic caucus at Brown’s victory was actually relief that in Brown’s victory they finally had an excuse to step back from the ledge. I figured at the time that it was garbage aimed at stirring up nutroots readers to inundate congressional Dems with “pass this or else” threats, but after Politico’s story, now I’m thinking maybe it’s true. Maybe Senate Dems are already in the lifeboats and waving bye-bye to Pelosi and Obama on the deck of the Titanic. Exit question: How to square this with Ryan’s account? Did Reid wrangle 51 votes sometime during the interim?
Update: Unity.
“There’s a lot of anger at the Senate,” said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., a liberal who wants to push ahead with healthcare reform, but loathes some of the Senate bill’s provisions, especially a tax on expensive health benefits packages. “They’ve wasted six months and done nothing, and they subject themselves to undemocratic rules that frustrate the will of the majority of the American people and of them. And we can do all kinds of things but in the end, it doesn’t matter what we do if they don’t go along with it. We pass a lot of good things, and it goes over there to die.”

Part of the problem here for the dems is that they’re sending Barry up to Capitol Hill to deliver his State of the Union — and he’s got nothin’. There isn’t a single “achievement” he can point to after one year in office and the mother of all party majorities in Congress. They’re trying to salvage something — anything — that Barry can stand there and lie about. I mean, how pathetic is that SoU Address going to be? The State of the Union mirrors the state of his administration: epic disaster.

It is just pathetic that the Democrats are relieved that Brown won so they did not have to step off the ledge. Where is their courage? Where are their principles? Have they been is some trance? Is it really that hard to put the will of the American people first?

If they actually go reconciliation the backlash will be quick and rabid, in my opinion. I know I have stashed some traveling money for this purpose, it is a new year and and I have new vacation days.
bluemarlin on January 21, 2010 at 9:31 PM
Look … this thing is DEAD.
The Bluest state in the union just elected a guy by a significant margin to go to Congress and put the stake in this thing’s heart. It’s dead.
Right now – best thing Dems can do is mitigate their losses, circle the wagons and prepare for a bloody fight at the polls in November.
If they keep pushing this – they are going to completely destroy their party.
Which is fine with me.

Apparently the Rats have been trying to scare something up via reconciliation in the last couple of days. This latest report via Politico would seem to be addressing that very dynamic and its now apparent collapse…..to the relief of many a Rat pol.
Plenty of Dems are happy to see this election outcome and the pressure that’s been taken off of them.

I doubt Harry Reid can get 51 votes on anything at the moment. True, they’ll be tempted, but they are the one’s who will see Scott Brown sitting in ol’ Teddy’s seat next week and it will be a constant reminder. Survival mode is kicking in. How many actual “true believers” does Harry think he can find that will be WILLING to commit political suicide for Barry? How many already believe Barry threw them under the bus with his comment the other day about ‘slowing down on Health Care Reform”? This is the same guy that was screaming PASS IT NOW! since last summer.
GarandFan on January 21, 2010 at 9:34 PM
I wonder if Nancy has the votes. She will lose Cao without Stupak language, and there is a vacancy because of a retirement of a Hawaii Dem rep (special election hasn’t been held yet).
She had a five vote majority to start with I think, and she’s down to three.
Wethal on January 21, 2010 at 9:34 PM
On a suicide mission.
How West Virginia has repeatedly sent this and that other decrepit leftist moron back to the senate every election is beyond me.
elduende on January 21, 2010 at 9:34 PM
The one thing a lot of the Ds know is that Scott Brown actually won his race by 10 points, not the 5 or 6 that will end up being certified. That’s the MA fraud factor that the machine brought and regularly can bring to the game.
Now, figure in the Reid lame-duck factor. They all know he’s headed for the dingy bin of history.
Am I saying the Dems won’t try something? No, but they know that if they do it will be suicide for a generation or more. It will be their Jonestown.

I truly do not want socialist health care, and most of me says good riddance to that terrible bill, if it is truly dead. However, it would be fun to see those progressive bozos continue to try and screw the country over this summer, and see just how many seats they lose in November.
That is, it would be fun, as long as they continue to FAIL.
kam582 on January 21, 2010 at 9:42 PM
It’s all good. The old target was your health insurance and medical care, which he tried and failed to nationalize.
The new target is the banks and “Wall Street,” which will, ah, create jobs or something.

BottomLine5 on January 21, 2010 at 9:59 PM
I know we all think Obama wont tack to the “center” (wherever that is Frum day to day), but how can he not? As of right now, in order for him to do anything of lasting consequence he needs legislation. He can regulate with various agencies, but that will only get him so far with any kind of really leftist agenda. If he doesn’t tack right, then he’ll be a lame duck for three years. And if that happens, what’s the point? Resign and be done with it.

by the way, the “war” on wall street Obama and the left have started is a colossal misjudgment. They have really convinced themselves that its purely grassroots anger and not a Conservative ascendancy they face. They really are in their own bubble and the lasting impact will be to turn the Financial Houses into mortal enemies.
P.S. They are going to destroy New York City with their anti-bank tactics.

I said this on another thread, screw how many votes they can get in the Senate, there’s no way Nancy could get 218 votes in the House. After the Massachusetts Massacre, does anybody think 218 congresscritters are going to vote for any HC plan, let alone the Senate one? Nancy’s white-flag raising today signaled to all dems to save themselves between now and November. Yesterday, Bart Stupak said he doubted there’s 100 yes votes in the House now.

Congress has been passing laws for well over 200 years. Doesn’t it stand to reason that all the good ones have been taken? The f’d-up monstrosity that was the healthcare bill is Exhibit A, and the stock market’s response to the thought of “oh, no! They’re talking about turning their attention to jobs and the economy!” today is Exhibit B.
