Paul Ryan tells NRO: The Dems are going to try reconciliation

posted at 7:47 pm on January 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

I feel like Count Rugen: “Good heavens. Are you still trying to win?”

Which is a bad example, actually, because right after he said that he got stabbed in the chest.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, tells National Review Online that House Democrats are planning to use of the budget-reconciliation process in order to pass Obamacare. “They’re meeting with each other this weekend to pursue it,” says Ryan. “I’ve spoken with many Democrats and the message is this: They’re not ready to give up. They’ve waited their entire adult lives for this moment and they aren’t ready to let 100,000 pesky votes in Massachusetts get in the way of fulfilling their destiny. They’ll look at every option and spend the next four or five days figuring it out.”

If the Democrats pass a health-care bill through reconciliation, it means they would need only 51 votes in the Senate for final passage. To start the process, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) would need to bring a new health-care bill to the House budget committee with reconciliation instructions, with the Senate doing the same. “They’d have to go back to the beginning of the process,” says Ryan. “They’d need to affix reconciliation instructions to a new bill.” Doing so, he says, wouldn’t be too hard. “There’s nothing we can do to stop this from a technical standpoint, since all they need is a simple majority vote and our ratio on the committee is terrible. What we can do in the budget committee is pass resolutions for the Rules committee to insist on certain changes in the bill and create a ‘vote-a-rama’ atmosphere.”

Even so, he’s not sure they have the votes to do it given the horrendously awful optics this will have for Blue Dogs. Boehner seemed to know this was coming earlier today, when he warned Pelosi not to ignore the lessons of Massachusetts even though she’d already held her presser saying she didn’t have the votes. But if Ryan’s right that it’s full speed ahead on reconciliation over the weekend, how to square it with this AP story that hit the wires just an hour or so ago?

Though reeling from a political body blow, House Democrats rejected the quickest fix to their health care dilemma Thursday and signaled that any agreement on President Barack Obama’s signature issue will come slowly, if at all

Democrats’ hopes of settling on a strategy by the weekend seemed to fade, as lawmakers struggled to comprehend the drawbacks of every option…

Some lawmakers said it will take time for congressional Democrats, who huddled repeatedly Thursday, to realize how limited their options are. “People are at various levels of the seven stages of grief,” said Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding what the AP means by “slowly,” but in any event, Ryan seems to think Pelosi and the caucus have settled on the reconciliation path while the AP’s sources seem to think they’re still undecided. Meanwhile, Gibbs told the media today that Obama wants to “let the dust settle” and move health care to the back burner for awhile while Pelosi and Reid figure out what to do, which is as mystifying to me as it is to Josh Marshall. Quote: “Time is not on their side. I think the everyone moment that goes by, demoralization and panic sinks in further, and action becomes less likely.” Precisely. Why give Blue Dogs more time to think about it, knowing that every day that ticks by gets them closer to the midterms? Earl Pomeroy said publicly over the weekend that he might as well retire if this drags on much longer. How do you think he feels about it now dragging on for weeks more with reconciliation and culminating in a de facto nuking of the newly elected Massachusetts veto?

Do not imagine for a moment, Mr. Allahpundit, that leadership is a pleasure. On the contrary, it is a deep and heavy responsibility. No one believes more firmly than Emperor Obama, Queen Pelosi and Prince Harry that America’s citizens should have freedom and liberty. They would be only too happy to listen to the voices of their subjects, but sometimes America’s citizens might be racists, Nazis, political terrorists or just too stupid to know what is best for them and might not contribute to the DNC and might not even vote Democrat, even once, in the next election, Mr. Allahpundit, and then where would we be?

Watch unemployment numbers go up while they still try to push this through.

They’re going to essentially drive up taxes and reduce care while people become more, and more, and more frustrated. They keep this up, we’ll be winning MA by 15-20% next time… And we’ll have no problem repealing their work. Smart power.

Those dip-$h!ts, including the Blue Dogs, have known all along that Americans hated Obamacare. I more tend to believe they’re putting up a front like they’re going to fight it, but all the while looking for a graceful exit. If Obama has said “let’s let the dust settle,” that’s their out. I consider this a legitimate possibility. In some ways, we’re a victim of success. The deed is done – their leadership has already driven them off a cliff. State after state show that their electoral prospects are poor. For a long time the leftist base bought the spin – that the opposition was overblown and people want this. Massachusetts changes their calculus. Hold you nose and listen to Maddow for an example – these people are calling the same congressmen we are.

They have pressure from both sides, and most are in a no win position either way they turn. The only difference is they’ll get cush employment gigs if they cram this through.

We need to keep the pressure on. I take this as a signal from Ryan to keep it up. Keep writing them. Keep calling them.

I cannot have full faith in the radicals telling the rest of us that they have cooled off and will proceed honestly.

They are neither honest nor adult (as another post said), or they would not be thinking the way they do. We would not have this problem.

Radical leftists make compromises that set the baseline for the next negotiation, not to end a conflict. How can an egomaniac like Pelosi back down due to some pissant Senator from the Bay State, smaller than SF?

And I did love Obama assuring federal workers that their Cadillac health plans would not suffer the surcharge. As if it matters. Any tax they pay is a churning of money to keep more IRS people around. From one federal pocket to another to another, signifying nothing.

Never trust a marxist to give up. Their conscience tells them they are right, and the incentives of power and wealth they can’t attain through honest labor will keep them tirelessly chipping away by every possible tactic. This whole thing is far from over, and the assumption that communism died when the Wall came down was false and misleading.

Indeed, the Saudi prince donated at least $500,000 to CAIR after 9/11. He also presented a $10 million relief check to then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani – or at least he tried. Giuliani rejected the gift after bin Talal blamed America’s “pro-Israel” policies in the Middle East for the attacks.
Prince Bin Talal’s voting stake

Bin Talal, a member of the Saudi ruling family, owns a 5.5 percent voting stake in Fox News’ parent News Corp., run by media tycoon Rupert Murdoch. The prince has said he is willing to increase his share in Fox’s parent to fend off hostile takeover bids by rivals. Murdoch, in turn, has invested in bin Talal’s Saudi-based enterprises.

It is not immediately clear if bin Talal has influenced Fox’s decision to book CAIR. But there is strong evidence that bin Talal has directly influenced Fox News content in the past.

As WND reported, during violent street protests involving Muslim immigrants in France in 2005, the Saudi prince persuaded Murdoch to change a screen banner that identified the unrest as “Muslim riots.”

“I picked up the phone and called Murdoch (and told him) these are not Muslim riots, these are riots out of poverty,” bin Talal said. “Within 30 minutes, the title was changed from ‘Muslim riots’ to ‘civil riots.’ ”

Fox News has acknowledged it changed the banner after receiving complaints from unnamed Muslims abroad. It has not denied bin Talal’s influence in its internal operations.

I’d like Rush or Beck take on this issue with Rudy Guiliani

Here’s what the big hitters of the Dem Party are saying:

Moveon.org:

Watching a Republican replace Ted Kennedy is simply devastating. But today, we have to make sure Democrats take the right lesson: the only way to win in November is to start truly fighting for working families.

Campaign for America’s Future:

Here’s the real lesson from Tuesday’s Massachusetts debacle: Americans want to know what side Democrats are on: Wall Street or Main Street, the insurance companies or the citizenry? The Wall Street wing of the party can’t see the fury that is building across the country. It’s time to ignore their advice and push for the bold reform that both progressive and independent voters are demanding

ThinkProgress.org

Whether or not Massachusetts increases your perception of the political threat level a little or a lot, the essence of the matter is that there’s no increase in the threat level that comes from voting “yes” a second time.

The Dems will have to try something to get it thru. They may well yet be successful.

Remember — “every crisis is an opportunity.” Brown’s win may have produced a crisis, so we should consider how they view it as an opportunity. They still control both houses and the WH. They’re leftists. Universal healthcare is their legacy issue, the key component in the destruction of the middle class, the avowed objective of every Statist.

They’re only slowing down. They will not stop. Ever.

Krauthammer is right, this means insurrection.

To the Pain!

Holger on January 21, 2010 at 9:44 PM

This is what the democrats call “leadership”. I wonder if they know how many other nations are laughing at us. Fools.

scalleywag on January 21, 2010 at 9:44 PM

Here’s another movie metaphor regarding Pelosi & Reid:

Thelma. Louise. Thunderbird. Accelerator. Cliff.

Wave everybody!

turfmann on January 21, 2010 at 8:40 PM

I’ll chip in for the Thunderbird, if you’ll get them into the car!

massrighty on January 21, 2010 at 9:57 PM

I believe it. I thought it was rather suspicious that they all started throwing in the towel without so much as a temper tantrum as soon as Scott was declared the winner. This is just a ploy to lull us into a false sense of security so that maybe we won’t notice when in the wee hours of the morning some Sunday in the near future they all shut the door to their smoke-filled back room and pass this sucker via reconciliation.

Don’t let your guards down, folks — not for a minute. They haven’t come this far just to wave the white flag. It’s full speed ahead for the radicals.

NoLeftTurn on January 21, 2010 at 10:01 PM

They’ve waisted their entire adult lives for this moment and they aren’t ready to let 100,000 pesky votes in Massachusetts get in the way of fulfilling their destiny

Fixed

I’ve got my insurrection shoes on and ready to march.

Can we bring back tarring and feathering now?

I haven’t put my hardware away yet. IYKWIMAITYD.

Mirimichi on January 21, 2010 at 10:33 PM

I’ve said it before. I don’t trust Dems, and will not ever trust them. I had a feeling they were still on this, privately. While in public, getting their henchman to deliver the alternate message…to avoid the potential, and eventual, anger, and rage that’s coming, if they do this.

I agree. I don’t know if enough dems will have the fortitude to say no to Nancy. She, and other Dems seem to have some strangle hold over them, or they are at heart, far left liberals, hell bent on destroying this country.

capejasmine on January 21, 2010 at 10:41 PM

“Let’s let dust settle” means “let’s not talk about this until we’ve figured out a way to pass the whole thing without the American people’s permission.”

Fred 2 on January 21, 2010 at 10:44 PM

Dr. K is correct.

You keep it classy, HA commenters.

Anyway, if you guys get to use the filibuster, we get to use reconciliation. You play dirty, we play dirty. Fair is fair.

crr6 on January 21, 2010 at 11:26 PM

It’s over.

Senator 41′s arrival to the capital building today marked the death of this dangerous bill.

The people of the nation spoke through the Massachusetts electorate and the message was a full rejection of socialized medicine.

Get over it Nancypants. Anyone notice how quiet Reid has been the past two days?
