Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on January 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
I like to give links and hat-tips on Obamateurisms whenever I can, but today’s hat tip is a bit unique. This time, Barack Obama himself tipped me off to this Obamateurism — and actually committed the bigger Obamateurism while recounting it. Obama spoke with George Stephanapoulos and discussed why his first year was a flop, or at least his take on it (via The Corner):
“If there’s one thing that I regret this year is that we were so busy just getting stuff done and dealing with the immediate crises that were in front of us that I think we lost some of that sense of speaking directly to the American people about what their core values are and why we have to make sure those institutions are matching up with those values,” Obama told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos in an exclusive interview at the White House.
The president said he made a mistake in assuming that if he focused on policy decisions, the American people would understand the reasoning behind them.
“That I do think is a mistake of mine,” Obama said. “I think the assumption was if I just focus on policy, if I just focus on this provision or that law or if we’re making a good rational decision here, then people will get it.”
In other words, Obama gave himself a good, solid B-plus instead of an A because he failed to explain his utter brilliance to us all year long. Without him spoon-feeding his self-evaluations to us, presumably in small words so that all of the bitter clingers can understand them, the American public is apparently too dumb to evaluate Presidents on their own.
Talk about arrogance …
Ask yourselves this: was Obama’s big problem in 2009 getting too involved in legislative efforts and not spending enough time in front of the cameras talking about himself? On his signature domestic-agenda issue, Democrats in Congress repeatedly complained that Obama wasn’t involved at all. On Afghanistan, Obama took almost four months to decide whether he would properly resource the strategy to which he had committed in March, during which he spoke to a joint session of Congress, did two media tours talking to reporters about ObamaCare while sitting on the sidelines on negotiations, and took a tour of Asia that accomplished absolutely nothing and a trip to Copenhagen in which other world leaders actively ignored him.
Just for the record: according to Mark Knoller at CBS, in 2009 Obama gave 42 news conferences (most of them joint “availabilities” with foreign leaders), 52 addresses or statements specifically about health care, with a total of 411 speeches, comments, or remarks. In addition, Obama did 158 interviews in his first year in office. He also held 23 town hall meetings, including two out of the country. It’s not for lack of opportunity that Obama didn’t get to explain himself.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The more and more this guy talks, the more I’m getting an image in my head…
Of Obama acting and sounding like the president Martin Sheen played in the movie, “The Dead Zone”. Where the guy was so full of his own propaganda, so enraptured by himself, so strict in his own belief of his own ‘destiny’, that he ended up becoming psychotic- and ended up destroying the world.
I’m not saying Obama is exactly like that, but this guy’s own inflated ego and sense of self ‘worth’ and his condescension are striking parallels.
catmman on January 21, 2010 at 9:26 AM
Obama’s like a Robo Prez – he personifies so much narcissism and arrogance – is this really coming from him or has someone removed his brain and replaced it with a computer ship that just spews out what other are programming into it- which would explain why he can’t stay on message without his best friend the teleprompter….

Exactly! Recall that it was just last November, after election of NY Dem. Bill Owens was being “celebrated” at a private “pep talk” to Dems, Obama asked: Does anybody think that the teabag, anti-government people are going to support you if you bring down health care? All it will do is confuse and dispirit” Democratic voters “and it will encourage the extremists. (NYT, 11/7/09)

Yes. I have the same problem. I have returned three receiver units to Dish Network. They keep sending them back, telling me there isn’t anything wrong with them.

Obama needs to stay home and stay off the Television and read some history books, buck up on American and World history. Learn a little something about this world. Not from the eyes of Chomsky, either.
Would do him well to invite Bill Clinton and GWBush to the house and have some long discussions about governing.
He is an embarrassment.
Bill Clinton should LOVE this man. He is making him look better than Clinton himself could ever do.

President Barack Hussein Obama is his own best friend. He needs no other. His mirror tells him every day how simply magnificent he is./
It’s no wonder we have never been allowed to see his medical records. Therein would lie the key.

How many more press conferences, staged town halls, and love-fest would we have had to endure if the filthy lying coward in the White House hadn’t been so busy?
highhopes on January 21, 2010 at 10:06 AM
Right idea but not strong enough. “Tell people what their core values now are” is more like it. After all, the man who can dismiss a whole political party’s concern with “I won” doesn’t give a rodent’s behind about what the American people want. He’ll just mandate our beliefs and call us racist if we don’t go along with him.
highhopes on January 21, 2010 at 10:11 AM
There are also some pretty strong hints in his Kenyan daddy’s life story. Obama Senior was known for his arrogance and self-absorption. He died a bitter and broken (both literally and figuratively) man — still raging against those who couldn’t or wouldn’t recognize and reward his awesomeness.
AZCoyote on January 21, 2010 at 10:13 AM
We’re so stupid we can’t understand his brilliant policy moves unless he comes out each time to brilliantly explain them to us. He hasn’t had a press conf sinc July because he can’t brilliantly answer questions from an adoring media, and we’re the stupid ones here. Maybe if he substituted tee times for press conferences, we’d like his policies more. Not!
Kissmygrits on January 21, 2010 at 10:14 AM
I’m tiring of the excuse “I didn’t explain my wonderfulness clearly enough for you idiots”. As the current installment illustrates, this always comes from someone who has talked the issue to death but not actually done anything. As Stephy himself intoned during the Clinton interlude, “Words are actions.” I’m beginning to suspect that they really think that is true.
Hucklebuck on January 21, 2010 at 10:20 AM
He basically said: “You people are too stupid to just ‘get it’!”
Too much TV face time was the main complaint I heard from most of my friends, supporters or not. My question has always been: when does he ever DO ANYTHING since he’s either traveling around apologizing for the US, playing golf, or on TV.
The gall!! Arrogance – oh yeah. Audacity is another appropriate word. Narcissistic. Delusional. All of the above!
DINORight on January 21, 2010 at 10:27 AM
His Awesomeness has already pulled off a hat trick in Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts. I guess he’s going for bonus points in Nevada.
Barry is sooo good at campaigning! I fervently hope he makes the time to come to New York to promote Chucky Schumer for re-election in 2011.
Barb Dwyer on January 21, 2010 at 10:30 AM
52 addresses or statements specifically about health care, with a total of 411 speeches, comments, or remarks.
In the real world of business if a CEO made 52 addresses about the company’s business plan in a year and then said he didn’t explain it well enough- wouldn’t that CEO be cleared out of his office within the hour? Would his speech writer be fired? Would the whole entire staff be let go?
Will we see any of that? I am betting a speech writer might go under the bus, but would he fire Sebelius over this? Orzag (sp?)?
If he fires someone, will it be before the SOTU or after?
journeyintothewhirlwind on January 21, 2010 at 10:33 AM
The most embarrassing part of this latest gaffe is the use of the term, “stuff.” We were chastised for using that word when speaking to our parents. What “stuff,” Mr. President? What is “stuff?” Is it the socialist/communist “stuff” that you are trying to ram down our throats? That “stuff?” He is a great communicator? Perhaps if you are an adenoidal 15 year old he is.
allstonian on January 21, 2010 at 10:38 AM
He absolutely has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Everything from the fall of the Berlin Wall, to the MA elections are somehow due to his greatness. All roads lead to BHO, and I think people in general are finally waking up to this.
It will end with him angry at the public for being too stupid to “get it” (which seems to already be happening), and the people who love him most being hurt and confused as he’s blaming and destroying them for not doing enough, when they’ve given up everything for him. Watch him start to crack as he starts losing his ego gratification, and watch his advisors start falling under the bus.
Preaching to the choir here I know, but this is not going to end well.

Obama needs a full-time tutor on history and U.S. government. However, he is so full of himself that I doubt education would be helpful.

Palin/Brown 2012. Can you imagine the sense of real hope and real change the USA would have?

Pretty soon all the MSM sycophants who installed the Big O (as in zero) are going to start drawing sticks to determine who has to interview him next! Never underestimate Liberal’s sense of self preservation…
Whenever he or his angry looking other half come on I change the channel.

royzer on January 21, 2010 at 11:09 AM
His admission, too, is a lie. He thought enough about the people to call us “tea baggers”. He thought enough about the people to say the if we wanted to have an open dialogue on healthcare, he would.
Nothing, nothing he says is the truth. Nothing.

Stupid Americans. Even Obama didn’t realize how inept we are, and he’s a super-genius ya’ know!!
Bet he drinks plenty of Brawndo.

This is what an affirmative action upbringing produces. A man that even when incorrect is rewarded for being wrong and hence can do no wrong. This guy is deeply flawed, deeply.
jukin on January 21, 2010 at 11:19 AM
That interview showed Barry’s ability to not only lie to the American people, he lies to himself. AND BELIEVES IT!
GarandFan on January 21, 2010 at 11:28 AM
You know, if Time magazine had just done one more cover story on Obama in 2009, I’m sure the american people would have approved of ObamaCare.
PappaMac on January 21, 2010 at 11:35 AM
What my core values are? You mean…I can’t have my own, and teach my children what my values, and beliefs are? I need Obama to do that for me?
Arrogant piece of crap. What makes him believe that he MUST be this moral compass for the world? This man makes me so angry, my blood pressure goes off the charts sometimes. Now with Michelle believing she has to be the moral compass in how we eat, and feed our kids? Get bent Michelle. When all Americans can have a chef, and private exercise room as you do….then we’ll talk. Til then, shut the hell up, and put a bit more work on that podunkadunk!
capejasmine on January 21, 2010 at 11:56 AM
Early formulative years spent in Indonesia. Teen years tutored by a communist. Adult Years schooled in a Black liberation Theology Church. What common core values of Americans do you think you can at all speak to.

Fools were fooled. He’s neither smart, nor can he communicate.

Why, will someone tell me, do so many people in the media think that Obama is so brilliant? He doesn’t impress me as all that intelligent or well grounded in the basic knowledge I expect a President to have. It seems that if you can speak without an accent in this country, and don’t mangle grammatical rules of standard English you’ve got most of what it takes for people to think you’re smart.
