Jobless claims “unexpectedly” rise again
posted at 9:30 am on January 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Let’s see if you can guess which adverb gets used in this Reuters report on initial jobless claims? Depressingly? Obviously? Predictably? Certainly not the latter, because in the era of Obamanomics, the media always consider bad economic news …
The number of U.S. workers filing new applications for unemployment insurance unexpectedly rose last week as claims delayed from the year-end holidays were pushed through, government data showed on Thursday.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 36,000 to a seasonally adjusted 482,000 in the week ended Jan. 16, the Labor Department said, rising for a third straight week.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims dipping to 440,000 from a previously reported 444,000.
An increase of 36,000 is a significant jump, especially after seasonal adjustments. The retail season must have been worse than first thought.
The headline almost suggests that Reuters or CNBC has begun to smell the coffee after Obama’s first year in office: “Jobless Claims Post Jump, Dimming Hopes for Recovery.” Normally, media reports on jobless claim increases get reported as evidence that the recovery is experiencing bumps, or distraction from the recovery, or some such. This headline underscores the point that we haven’t actually seen a recovery yet, and if we’re still in the high 400K range of initial jobless claims more than two years after the recession, it’s probably because one hasn’t actually started yet.
How many times will the media use “unexpectedly” to describe increases in unemployment claims, housing problems, and so on? At least pick a new adverb, for crying out loud. Merriam-Webster’s free thesaurus suggests “surprisingly” (too cheery?), “improbably” (but they’re all too probable), “startlingly” (hardly, given the economic policies of this administration), “unlikely” (ha!), and “unintendedly,” which actually works.
I’d suggest “predictably,” myself, because the bad news comes like clockwork and has all year long.
Update: Glenn Reynolds scoffs at the notion that administrative backlog is to blame:
But how can it be “unexpected” if it’s just due to an administrative backlog?
The jump was due to an “administrative” accumulation from late December and early January holidays, and did not reflect “economic” reasons, a Labor Department spokesman said.
Wouldn’t you know about these things piling up? I mean, the holidays come around every year, and you ought to know that if you’re doing your job and tracking data and stuff. . . .
So they had no trouble keeping up with 700,000 new claims per week in the beginning of 2009 but got flummoxed by an additional 36,000 in December?

It’s okay, people. Calm down. They’re going to raise the debt ceiling AGAIN by another $1.9 Trillion dollars, the second such rise in as many months. So I’m sure everthing is FINE.
Wonder if that was “unexpected” from an economics point of view as well. Then again that whole Cash for Clunkers thing was such a wonderful success, it was surely worth the extra borrowing.

I do not think I had my undies in a bunch over that move. It was fait accompli and for just a minor time shift he got something out of it. What McConnell did not expect was Brown winning. So that move has made it more difficult for them to get 60 votes for raising the debt ceiling (and I read last night the Dems need 60).

He shouldn’t have. It was obviously a smart move. The vote didn’t change, it just took place 3 or 4 hours earlier. The price was that the Dems would need to extend the debt ceiling, again, just before the SOTU.
It was obviously a good move from the get go.

Good way to jump on this one early, Ed… but I still fear you aren’t reporting the most important fact here – Obama is deliberately destroying the economy.
At any rate, you neglected to link us to the Reuters story, so I’ll link to a similar AP story:
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Initial-jobless-claims-apf-3027105474.html?x=0&.v=5
Headline, and subheading:
Talk about spin. 2 “unexpectedlies”, and “extended benefits”.
First two paragraphs:
Here we have a lie (“recovers”), and another unexpectedly… followed by the claim that economists “expect” unemployment to increase in coming months. So, AP, let me understand this… Even though economists “expect” unemployment to rise… a rise in jobless claims is “unexpected”?
WOW.

This time last year, I was job searching in MI. I followed the given instructions and let me tell you, in this economy, you employers have some learning to do as well.
The prevailing attitude was to tell people to submit resume (etc.) and somebody would call if the employer was interested. The applicant didn’t know if their stuff had gotten there, when the job had been filled, or anything else. It was if you were sending things off to some black hole. People may be desperate for work in the Obama economy but that is no excuse for the fact that so many potential employers are so uncivil in dealing with job applicants.

What the GOP needs now is a constant drumbeat on three issues. First, the Obama economic and unemployment numbers. We’ve had a year of dithering over cap & trade and healthcare reform when the rat bastard traitor should have been doing something more productive with his time. Second, the out-of-control spending when you have single-party rule with children in charge of the family budget. And finally, the utter lack of concern this administration has when it comes to national security matters. Eric Holder getting to decide that the 12/25 bomber didn’t need to be interrogated is just one appalling example from an administration who refuses to treat terrorists and terrorism with the same zeal they go out after large corporations for not paying enough in taxes.

Is Obama getting ready to pull a Clinton, and move drastically to the right? Couple of things make me wonder. He just got Volcker to come on board and help him sort out the economy. A major announcement today that is driving the market crazy has got Volcker stamped all over it. Obama is also listening to Peter Peterson and may actually follow his advice about reforming Social Security. These aren’t bad moves if they follow through, but could it stop the conservative wave that is building for the midterms?
I like some of the elements that were announced today, and I like some of Peterson’s ideals, but most medicine makes you feel worse before you feel better, so we will see a Clinton like conversion just after the midterm, but it actually got rolling about 10 months earlier.
