Father of the Decade?

posted at 8:48 am on January 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

ABC calls this admission a “bombshell statement,” but if so, it’s the first bombshell that ever came from a dud:

Former presidential candidate John Edwards abandoned his long denial that he had fathered a child during an affair with a campaign aide and admitted today that he is the father of the almost 2-year-old girl.

“I am Quinn’s father,” Edwards said in the bombshell statement this morning. “I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves.

The former senator and presidential hopeful had an affair with campaign cinematographer, Rielle Hunter, 42, and she later give birth to Frances Quinn.

“I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace,” Edwards statement said, referring to the little girl.

“It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me,” the statement said.

“To all those I have disappointed and hurt, these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry,” he said.

Well, there are two Americas.  There is the one where people acknowledge the obvious immediately, and there is the other where they hire lawyers and lie like crazy about the obvious.  In that sense, Edwards became a bridge between the two today.

“I am Quinn’s father” is a statement that is the intellectual equivalent of “Voters sure are angry.”  Who didn’t already know this?  Just making this big production out of it is an insult to everyone’s intelligence.  As for announcing that he’s showing her “love and affection,” well, good for you, pal.  What a champ.  Give yourself an extra pat on the back from me.

Here’s a thought: maybe Edwards should just shut up and take care of his very ill and long-suffering wife and the toddler he fathered out of wedlock, rather than publicly congratulating himself on taking two years to be honest about his paternity and finally acting like Quinn’s father.

Update: Michelle calls this “as calculated as an algebra exam,” and points out that former Edwards aide Andrew Young has a tell-all book coming out in February.  Edwards is just getting ahead of the curve, not engaging in the least bit of courage.

Here’s the video, if you can stomach it:

I’m not sure people undertaand how significant this scumbag really is.

John Edwards finished second in the Iowa caucuses in 2008. SECOND. Barack Obama won that caucus and vaulted into front-runner status in the Democratic race because Edwards siphoned off votes from Hillary Clinton. If his affair had not been covered up he would have been out of the race well before Iowa, and Hillary probably would have won there, and then in New Hampshire, and then the race would have been declared essentially over.

So thanks a f$%*ing lot, media and politicos who covered up for this scumbag.

rockmom on January 21, 2010 at 9:36 AM

This is such old news. Is ANYONE seeing/reading this today and being surprised/shocked ?

bridgetown on January 21, 2010 at 9:38 AM

Can’t stomach watching that weasel. And Michelle is right, he’s only talking because of the book. The man is a narcissistic liar. I don’t know why any woman would stay with him, and I especially don’t understand how another man would lie and say the child was his. Maybe he got paid handsomely.

scalleywag on January 21, 2010 at 9:39 AM

Scum.

Baby Daddy John Throckmorton Edwards should now be the poster child for why we need tort reform.

ohhh, the metaphors and analogies we could spin on this one.

This is one of the sickest displays from a supposedly responsible public figure, evah.

Paul-Cincy on January 21, 2010 at 9:45 AM

But I didn’t even watch the video. I mean the whole thing is sick.

The All But Cratered network (ABC) brings us the bombshell that Edwards fesses up to being babies father.

In other news…. the earth is found to be round!!

right2bright on January 21, 2010 at 9:52 AM

Yep, me too. Particularly want to read it now, after donh’s wonderful description. Sounds like it’ll be as much fun as watching the collective liberal breakdown over MA…

Track-A-’Crat on January 21, 2010 at 9:33 AM

Now that I read it, I found it a bit underwhelming. Seems odd that was the line that got him tossed. Worse has probably been said about Edwards in this thread (e.g. “scum”). Maybe it was a culmination.

LastRick on January 21, 2010 at 9:53 AM

I have mixed feelings about this, Mr. Ed.

At least John Edwards and his mistress are definitely “PRO-LIFE”. THEY DIDN’T ABORT THE BABY WHEN IT WAS CONVENIENT.

But why there’s no uproar from the side of the far-left’s pro-abortionists faction?

Oh, I get it. It’s Edwards’ golden sperm. IT MUST BE SPARED.

TheAlamos on January 21, 2010 at 9:55 AM

Bombshell? When the Enquirer had it right all along?

tree hugging sister on January 21, 2010 at 9:56 AM

Culture of Corruption

Indeed.

There is no way in hell that ambulance chasing reprobate isn’t going to make a buck or four off this whole ordeal. I fully expect to see hear of John Edwards on Oprah and/or Tyra crying his eyes out at the very least just before or just after his scum-bag protege Andrew Young makes his rounds plugging his sleaze filled book.

SilverStar830 on January 21, 2010 at 9:57 AM

Pass.

Bottom line, real men don’t act like Edwards. He should get together with Jon Gosselin, Michael Lohan, Joe Jackson and Balloon Boy’s father for a reality show called Bad Dad.

SilverStar830 on January 21, 2010 at 9:57 AM

I also expect Elizabeth Edwards to be out there doing the same thing and trying to paint herself as the complete and total victim (not to mention throwing in the “C” card for good measure). I have sympathy for the woman’s health problems but she’s been as much of an opportunist as her husband.

highhopes on January 21, 2010 at 10:01 AM

And if the press had looked into this long ago, Edwards would not have run for President in 2008, not taken votes away from Hillary and Hillary would be President today….

albill on January 21, 2010 at 10:05 AM

Michelle is absolutely right, this is completely calculated. As buried as it can ever be by the election Tuesday, taking some attention away from the Tea Party/GOP/Brown victory and the Democrat melt-down.

BTW, where are all those hard hitting op-eds and in-depth news analyses on the developing schism between the “progressives” and moderates in the Democrat party? Oh wait, how would discussing that advance the agenda?

serendip2b on January 21, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Regardless of the timing, it needed to be said. This whole thing sickens me. The tell-all book sickens me. Michelle’s gut reaction sickens me. Like any man could sit there quietly while some greedy ex-staffer tells his daughter she isn’t loved or wanted… His actions were beyond reproach, no one will argue that, but I didn’t see him making excuses, I read about a father making sure his daughter knew that in spite of how he acted, in spite of everything she gets to read and see on youtube, he loves her and she is wanted. I’m not saying this statement is admirable, I’m saying that it’s the very least he could do as a father. Anything less and he’d be more of a coward in my book. It needed to be said, and I won’t fault him for saying something that ultimately protects her, even if it is mildly self-serving. It’s over. Edwards is over. What’s the point? This country is obsessed with the politics of complete and total destruction. Absolutely scorched earth. We truly relish it. How many people here can deny that they take some satisfaction in watching this fall-from grace? And yet we sit here and throw fits when the whackos chase every silly Palin rumor relentlessly. My reaction to his statement has very little to do with John Edwards, and everything to do with that little girl.

John Edwards, like Bill Clinton, is a stock character Southern good-ol-boy character type. Many of ‘em wind up selling used cars; the more talented go on to become trial lawyers. Only chicks are unable to see through their smarmy schtick. The guys…well…we’re at the bar when Edwards hurries in from is secret romantic tryst for a quick drink on finally heading home. “Hey, Johnnie Boy, where’d you tell the old lady you were this time?” And all give a knowing laugh.

Arturo Factori on January 21, 2010 at 10:32 AM

Okay, who is surprised?

I mean, c’mon–who actually believes that this is a bombshell announcement? Geeze.

At least he has enough moolah that the kid won’t have to want for the basic needs and then some.

Bob's Kid on January 21, 2010 at 10:32 AM

“I am Quinn’s father,” Edwards said in the bombshell statement this morning. “I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves.

“…Especially if that love and support involves learning that she’s diagnosed with cancer and then secretly using my fatherly ‘love and support’ on other, uglier children who aren’t my own…”

RightWinged on January 21, 2010 at 10:33 AM

I’m appalled by both John and Elizabeth. This entire spectacle really reminded me to not put any politician on a pedestal, no matter.

To think he derailed Hillary in Iowa makes me feel slightly ill.
