The World Turned Upside Down

posted at 8:48 am on January 20, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

You can be forgiven for thinking this looks more like Louisiana than Massachusetts:

Scott Brown upended politics in both the Bay State and on the national level in winning a Senate seat from Democrat Martha Coakley by a five-point margin.  Brown becomes the first Republican to win a Senate seat since 1972 — and that was a re-election by an incumbent.  This was a special election to fill the so-called “Kennedy seat,” and the result is a clear repudiation of the Kennedy legacy, at least on health care.

Rasmussen conducted the only thing resembling an exit poll after media outlets failed to anticipate a tight race.  The data shows that even though Coakley ran a poor campaign, when she bothered to run at all, that was at best a secondary reason for her political demise:

Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters in the state say health care was the most important factor in their voting decision. Brown made it clear in the closing days of the campaign that he intended to go to Washington to vote against the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats.

Twenty-five percent (25%) of Massachusetts voters say the economy was most important.

Forty-seven percent (47%) favor the health care legislation before Congress while 51% oppose it. However, the intensity was clearly with those who are opposed. Just 25% of voters in Massachusetts Strongly Favor the plan while 41% Strongly Oppose it.

Fifty percent (50%) say it would be better to pass no health care legislation at all rather than passing the bill before Congress.

Looking back, 30% say the bank bailouts were a good idea. Thirty-four percent (34%) say the same about the auto industry bailouts.

In other words, even in the bluest of blue states, where the entire Congressional delegation consisted of Democrats until 10 pm ET last night, voters have rejected the Obama agenda.  Fifty-six percent of Massachusetts voters say that health care was the most important factor in their voting decision, and Brown got at least 52% of the vote by campaigning on his explicit promise to block ObamaCare.

But this shouldn’t surprise anyone.  Two months ago, we saw the same exact dynamic in Virginia and especially New Jersey.  Democrats lost big in both states, but pundits were reluctant to draw conclusions from it.  Virginia, it was said, was always a center-right state that merely came home after a poor candidate (Creigh Deeds) ran for Governor.  In New Jersey, that argument didn’t fly as well, as the Garden State elects Republicans to statewide office only slightly more often than Massachusetts.  Barack Obama campaigned there as well, and delivered almost the same result as Coakley got in Massachusetts — a solid loss to a Republican who had not won a statewide office before Election Day.

Take another look at the map, and remember that Barack Obama won this state by twenty-six points just fourteen months ago.  He won New Jersey by double digits and Virginia by eight.  On the anniversary of his inauguration, which is today, the message is very clear: Obama has no coattails in the midterms.  Chris Cillizza reports that Democratic political gurus are making that clear to their clients:

Congressional strategists had warned in the closing days of the Massachusetts Senate race that a Coakley defeat had the potential to trigger a series of retirements within the Democratic ranks as members flee a political wave that could wash out dozens in the House and high single digits on the Senate side.

“My message to my clients? Jump ship now,” said one Democratic operative who advises a number of targeted Members of Congress. “Obama can’t help you.”

It’s not just that Obama can’t help Democrats — he’s killing their political prospects.  His own approval ratings are plunging, and his agenda is so toxic that Democrats can’t run on it in Massachusetts and win.  And if that agenda can no longer play in the bluest of blue states, where can Democrats feel safe by sticking to it?  Certainly not in Indiana, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, or even California.

Twelve months ago, few would have predicted that Obama could dissipate the goodwill and support of the American people before giving his first State of the Union address.  No one can ignore this lesson like they did with New Jersey and Virginia.  Democrats are in deep trouble — and an insistence on staying the course on a radical agenda that turned Massachusetts red and Brown will end the Democratic majority in the House just as it ended the Democratic sinecure of the “Kennedy seat.”

Sugar Land on January 20, 2010 at 8:59 AM

Yeah, they took shots at each other even before the polls closed. There’s no love lost there. In fact, I’d bet that Bill Clinton is the reason the race started to tighten up. He’s still a living legend with many Democrats and knows how to do a rally. On the flip side, when they asked people who were at the Obama rally why they were there, it was just to see Obama. Almost no one knew who Coakley was. Many of them were from out of state too.

Rachael Maddow on MSNBC last night (about 11:45 EST) claimed that the reason Coakley lost is that MA is (wait for it…….wait for it….) SEXIST! Yup, since they have never elected a woman governor or senator, there’s the proof, statewide mysogyny. (Ed, a youtube of that would be great).

Keep it up, Rach, no need to try to think about anything else that may have been a factor. Good work.

iurockhead on January 20, 2010 at 9:01 AM

I think that Massachusetts has tried 6 times to elect an Attorney General to the Senate and failed each time, Coakley makes it 7 failed attempts. It’s just a stat not anymore contributory than Maddow’s stat.

The lesson the Democrats should be taking away from this (besides the obvious) is that campaigning against W in 2008 may have worked, but it’s run its course. Of course, I doubt they will and I fully expect to see more of the same “[Candidate X] is in lock step with BushCheneyHaliburtonEEEEEVIL” campaign commercials as November approaches. Dems never learn from their mistakes. Their solution is to do more of the same only louder.

It’s the candidate’s job to sell himself or herself to the voters. If the results are poor, the fault lies with the candidate, not the voters.

Further, apart from this particular race, Democrats have done very poorly with male voters for a long time. It has nothing to do with the gender of the candidates, but rather with their ideology.

Indeed. Political scientists (!!!) are going to have to come up with a formula to describe the actual margin of victory.

We’ll hear this from news anchors on election nights eventually: “So AP calls this one for Republican Joe Blow, a margin of victory of four percentage points, just outside the margin of ACORN.”

Noticed the historical reference, too. The British surrender at Yorktown was marked by several hissy-fits: Lord Cornwallis, the defeated British commander, pleaded illness and sent his second in command, Brigadier General Charles O’Hara; O’Hara tried to surrender to Count Rochambeau, leader of the French forces (which the British viewed as being far more professional than the American army), but Rochambeau referred him instead to General Washington; Washington told O’Hara that he was to receive surrender instructions from General Benjamin Lincoln, his second in command, and here the irony was rich because Lincoln had had to surrender his forces to Cornwallis after the siege of Charleston the previous year. So, the losing side at Yorktown was stuck in denial, just as the Dems are after yesterday’s loss in Massachusetts.

NOOOOOOOOO! He’s a liberal in RINO clothing.

Hendo on January 20, 2010 at 9:41 AM

After listening to some Democrats last night try to shrug this loss off, I think Howard Dean attempted to blame Bush again. It is obvious that if the democrats don’t take this as a shot across the bow and continue to deny the will of the people then they are doomed to repeat moreover.
However the republicans need to learn from Brown too.
Bold colors not the pastels they have shown in the past elections.

Assuming that Obama has no intention of changing, the democrats can run from him but the GOP will still crush them with “guilt by association”.
I’ll bet a lot of Dems wish this was Britain and they could sack him for a more moderate leader.
Live by radical progressivism, die by radical progressivism.

Oh sure, they can run, they’ll just die, tired.

When is Judd Gregg leaving? 2010 or 2012?

BuckeyeSam on January 20, 2010 at 9:39 AM

2010.

Wethal on January 20, 2010 at 9:44 AM

I’d like to see that map stapled to Pelosi’s forehead.

G-man on January 20, 2010 at 9:44 AM

IN–Pence? (against Bayh)
IL–Kirk? (for Burris’s seat)
ND–its current governor (for the Dem who’s bailing out)
CA–who do we back against Boxer?
MO–??? (to fill Kit Bond’s seat)

When is Judd Gregg leaving? 2010 or 2012?

BuckeyeSam on January 20, 2010 at 9:39 AM

THIS

What exactly is the appeal of someone like that?

So long as people are afraid of being called RAAAACIST his personal approval ratings will stay up. Once they realize that no matter what they do they’ll still be called RAAAACIST for disagreeing with anything he does, they’ll get fed up with it and their real opinions will come out. Watch for his personal numbers crater then. I’m guessing around second or third week of November of this year.

crazy_legs on January 20, 2010 at 9:49 AM

Olbie was about to lose it last night. At one point–and I caught only a part of it–he was going off about his use of the term teabaggers. He claims it was a Fox news reporter who first used it, and said people should, ‘…address complaints to him…”

Chrissie was a little more professional and balanced, but he looked like he aged ten years since I last saw him.

Brown’s victory speech was superb on all counts, with his best line being, “taxpayer dollars should be used for weapons to fight terrorism, not to pay for lawyers to defend them…”

Priceless!

I can’t imagine the top libs in the country changing their party’s course. But for the GOP, a new standard has been set on how to run a clean and articulate campaign. If the GOP can find more candidates of the same class and caliber as Sen. Brown (R-MA), the Dems are going to get clobbered in November.

People have been looking for analogies. Here’s one: the Battle of the Bulge.

Democrats have made no secret of their “big bang” strategy — get it all out there in the first few months, get it passed, then coast.

What they forget is that blitzkrieg didn’t work, in the end. Scott Brown just said “Nuts!”, and the troops cheered.

Regards,
Ric

we gotta keep pushing in the northeast and slowly turn that place

I predict that my home state of NH will go plowing back into the red column this year. People are just as p*ssed here as in Mass, and this isn’t a liberal state by any stretch.

crazy_legs on January 20, 2010 at 9:50 AM

It is obvious that if the democrats don’t take this as a shot across the bow between the eyes and continue to deny the will of the people then they are doomed to repeat moreover.

Actually, that map looks like a big pitcher of bloody marys—please poor me one—too much celebrating last night.

Then, who? Not in criticism, but for my edification.

2010.

Wethal on January 20, 2010 at 9:44 AM

Regarding Gregg, is there a conservative in the pipeline?

BuckeyeSam on January 20, 2010 at 9:51 AM

The map says a lot and also causes one to explore more. Primarily, examine the populous centers (Boston, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard) which are colored Blue, indicating a win, which it was. However, look closer at the numbers, specifically the spread in these areas to determine is the amount of support Dem. really have.
