Mark Levin vs. Glenn Beck: Was Scott Brown’s joke about his daughters inappropriate?

posted at 6:46 pm on January 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

Two clips for you, one via the Right Scoop from this morning’s radio show and the other via Mediaite from tonight’s GB on Fox. When I saw the first one, I figured he simply stumbled onto the topic while riffing and it went from there; Mediaite was outrageously outraged by the “dead intern” comment, but whatever. It was a joke. To open tonight’s Fox show with the same material, though? Right out of the chute, the day after Brown delivered the biggest Republican victory since 2004? I don’t get it. Neither does Mark Levin, who’s been known to criticize Beck before:

You know, the really ignorant thing about criticizing Brown is that in kidding around with his girls, it actually shows he is a good family man. Ask any guy who is a father of girls: doing something deliberately to provoke the “oh daddy!” squirm of embarrassment from the teenage daughters is something only a father with a good, comfortable relationship does (and he never misses a chance to do so).

If smearing Brown was a joke, I don’t think it was very funny. It’s very weird.

Yeah, I had the same reaction about Brown being a good family man. What he said last night was embarrassing, but deliberately so, and his daughters seemed to take it with good humor. It was a sweet moment, however unorthodox. Sounds like the whole clan has a healthy appetite for busting on each other, in fact. From today’s Time interview:

First of all, I have a wife and kids, and they keep me very grounded, and I’ve always had that balance. Just like with [his daughter] Ayla when she was on American Idol. Gail [Huff, his wife, a local television reporter in Washington] and I would always notice when she was getting a little too full of herself. My family regularly says, “You know, Dad, do you want us to enlarge the door and open up the double doors so you can come in?” So I have a good check and balance system. We all do as family members, kind of keep an eye on each other.

Meredith Vieira asked him about the “they’re available” crack at the end of this morning’s “Today” interview too. I’m embedding that below the Beck clips; watch it and judge for yourself if Levin isn’t right. As for Beck’s knock on Brown for posing nude in Cosmo, fair enough, I guess, but that’s an odd critique coming from a guy who’s been very candid about his own considerably more checkered past. Yeah, yeah, I know — TV pundits shouldn’t be held to the same standard as U.S. Senators, especially those that describe themselves as “rodeo clowns,” but if Beck can overcome past mistakes to be taken seriously by millions of voters, why can’t Brown? Why even mention it?

Oh, and by the way: It worked.

Beck should shut his mouth. What a moron. He turned a joke, which everybody at the event apparently got, including his daughters, into something bad. It shows where Beck’s mind is at.

Narutoboy on January 20, 2010 at 6:52 PM

I think it’s great that he doesn’t measure everything he says with a PC ruler. He’s a real dad. Beck is grasping at another of his whispy demons.

Beck uses a whole lot of “I” and “me”, huh?

The first I heard of Brown’s “comment” of his daughters was reading about it, but then when I saw the vid, it put it into context. Twas no big deal.

ReformedAndDangerous on January 20, 2010 at 6:54 PM

Glenn is grating on me. He’s promoting himself too much. Plus, his radio show isn’t near as good as his TV show. It’s alternatively like an FM morning zoo, or a funeral dirge. I’ve been listening to Laura Ingraham and Mike Gallagher instead.

Glenn is going to flame out at this rate.

JKahn913 on January 20, 2010 at 6:54 PM

I’m beginning to tire of this Glenn Beck fellow. He may be off his rocker after all.

Vigilante on January 20, 2010 at 6:54 PM

I watched the speech. There wasn’t anything inappropriate with what he said in the context he said it. The girls are really college-age young women. It’s not like Obama was offering his 7th grader up as being available. Beck and Levin should be worried about more important stuff.

highhopes on January 20, 2010 at 6:55 PM

I like both Beck and Levin, they’re very entertaining. But Beck can be a little too black helicopterish while Levin is more often than not outrageously outraged. All the way around, nobody is perfect.

blatantblue on January 20, 2010 at 6:56 PM

Mark Levin > Beck.

Both are good for certain things, but I learn more from Levin than Beck.

Both serve the cause in different ways. Mark is a scholar. Beck is a brawler.

Good Lt on January 20, 2010 at 6:56 PM

Glenn is really hung up on that nude photo thing. Couple that with his weird reaction to an innocent, corny joke and I’d say Glenn needs to check himself for loose screws.

RadClown on January 20, 2010 at 6:57 PM

I bet ya Glenn is the type of man who asks to “mate,” instead of “make love,” or “do ‘it’.”

blatantblue on January 20, 2010 at 6:57 PM

I’m generally on Beck’s side, as opposed to the tiresome, jealous Levin.

But this is just goofy on Beck’s part. WTF?

tsj017 on January 20, 2010 at 6:57 PM

This is one of those comments I would cringe at and then shrug off, regardless of which side of the aisle they’re from. Non-event of the season.

WitchDoctor on January 20, 2010 at 6:58 PM

I would say something like that…That is a real person comment. Dad’s do stuff like that all the time. It was obviously done with the trust in knowing they love him.

tomas on January 20, 2010 at 6:58 PM

Congrats to Beck on ruining what should be a celebratory moment: Brown’s election.

jediwebdude on January 20, 2010 at 6:58 PM

Allah, have you seen Ayla Brown? She doesn’t need her Dad pimping her out on national TV to get dates. Every guy 18-26 in Boston would date her.

Good Solid B-Plus on January 20, 2010 at 6:58 PM

I thought Scott Brown was being personable, and funny.
Beck said that it was a red flag, he doesn’t trust politicians, but it was said with 1 part seriousness and 2 parts comedy. Levin doesn’t understand Beck, and is just using the opportunity to show everyone he has Beck issues.
Levin, here is some advice, let people come to their own conclusions on Beck…stop being his shadow critic.

Is this something to stop listening Beck over? no. Is this something that Brown should concern himself with, no. Should Levin take a chill pill? Yes.

Conservative Voice on January 20, 2010 at 6:59 PM

Sorry, I thought Beck’s joke was inappropriate and weird. Why ruin such a great moment with something so stupid?

Tasha on January 20, 2010 at 6:59 PM

I thought Brown’s remarks last night were great. His best line was………….

……I can’t believe I’m standing on the same stage with Doug Flutie”

It was priceless and gave America a look at a normal American man and his family.

That being said, Beck just started a sheit storm for the far left and sounded like some of the idiots I heard on MSLSD today.

Beck blew it big time with his rant. You win this one AP.

Knucklehead on January 20, 2010 at 6:59 PM

Ugh, every time Beck’s credibility starts to work its way into the hearts of moderates, he does stuff like this. A little more of his trademark overly-animated analysis and a little less of the personal attacks would go a long way– especially considering that Brown has done more to support the 9/12 Project-style change more than any politician in quite a while.

RachDubya on January 20, 2010 at 7:00 PM

now the AP ran with it.

Good Solid B-Plus on January 20, 2010 at 7:01 PM

Watch Beck on Friday and see who the real enemy is and it is not Beck, Levin or Brown. Watch and find out who and what method they use and having a dead intern is the least of what Brown should worry about if the enemy or those who follow them, gets its teeth in any real true power.

All of us need to chill out and move on.

Glenn Beck has been known to come across in the past as a loose cannon with a hair trigger. Such as was the case last night.

Sometimes I wish the guy would think first before he actually says something. Because one of these days, he’s going to peeve off the wrong person.

pilamaye on January 20, 2010 at 7:03 PM

How dare Glenn Beck say something off-color/that I disagree with in his 4 hours of airtime a day. This is an outrage of the highest order, and we should totally ignore what happens in the next week with Healthcare to focus on in-fighting between Beck and Levin.

Brown’s remarks are the kinda thing a Dad does to yank his kids’ chains. Anyone with kids has seen or done a million variations of it. His daughters’ reactions were priceless and it was obvious that it was an exuberant family prank.

We heard it and assumed that someone would throw a hissy fit about it, but it’s the equivalent of my brother wearing the dorkiest clothing he can find to mortify his kids when their friends visit.

It’s the kind of thing that only a family that’s really loving and cohesive can do.

It was stupid, and ruined my mood this morning. I wanted Beck to talk about the FREAKING ELECTION, not spend two hours obsessing on something dumb like this.

This was similar to a stunt that he pulled several years ago where he led the audience to believe he was confessing to a love affair with his own sister. That was a “joke” as well, and it so disgusted me it took years before I’d listen to Beck again.

Well, I’m back there again.

You just don’t pull crap like that and get taken as a serious talk radio host. On today of all days, Beck needed to play it straight and didn’t.

Brown’s comment about his daughters was awkward and the setting unfortunate (I laughed and cringed simultaneously), but his family is obviously close and have good relationships. His wife laughed and the girls smiled and shook their heads like “There he goes again. Thanks Dad.” Brown was “intoxicated” with the victory and enjoying the moment.

I like Beck, but he’s out to lunch on this. Of all the things to say about Brown winning Massachusetts, this is what he says?

I like Levin also, but he needs to chill on Beck. Focus on Obama and what statists are doing to the country. Seems to be a one-sided conversation too, because I never hear of Beck responding to Levin.

The Brown joke was a little odd, but small potatoes. He obviously has a good sense of humor, and maybe that’s how he just has fun with his family. In fact, maybe it’s a Mass. thing; anyone notice comedian Lenny Clark on stage with Brown? Not exactly someone known for G-rated comedy routines.

Erich66 on January 20, 2010 at 7:09 PM

I don’t know. This was a silly issue to latch on to.

I like both Beck and Levin for the different styles they bring to the issues. It’s equally silly to divert discussion into some type of “feud” between these two personalities.

That said, note that the media and blogs are playing up this Beck clip but ignoring all of the ones he has done on ACORN, SEIU, Anita Dunn, Van Jones, etc.

All a third party will ever do is get democrats elected.

But the third party meme is great for talk show hosts who refuse to do their job seriously to think they are a leader of a “movement” or something.

Rush is the de facto leader of the conservative movement. He doesn’t need to tell anyone that he is, OTHERS say that he is. Rush also has far more talent as a radio entertainer on his worst day than Beck ever will on his best.

Actually, that’s the one thing that irked me, and really surprised me. The ‘dead intern’ thing was shock-jocky shtick, no big deal to me, but harping on the Cosmo spread on his Fox show seemed really off-key, especially since Glenn acknowledges his own less-than-perfect past.
