Brown’s daughter to critics of his joke: Mellow out

posted at 9:57 pm on January 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

450+ comments already on the Levin/Beck thread. Evidently you guys are interested in this. Hopefully Politico’s interview will settle the debate about whether Brown’s kids really were outrageously outraged or not:

“I had no idea he was going to do that. I saw the script and there was definitely no mention of that. It was totally off script,” Brown said in a phone interview squeezed in between classes at Boston College.

She admitted that she was slightly embarrassed. “But that’s what gives people a chance to see my real dad.”…

Conservative talk show host Glenn Beck slammed Brown’s acceptance speech on his show Wednesday – specifically for broadcasting on national television that his two daughters are currently “available.” Beck appeared to compare Brown to Gary Condit, the former Democratic congressman who some suspected was involved in the disappearance of his mistress and congressional intern Chandra Levy, who was found dead…

“That is incredible. It just surprises me that people can be so negative,” Ayla said. “I feel as though all fathers across the nation can relate to having daughters and having these conversations…That’s our dad. There’s nothing creepy about it at all.”

She says she’s staying apolitical but is looking forward to meeting a certain roguish Republican ex-governor. Meanwhile, HuffPo and some of the lefty gossip sites are posting a Facebook pic of her and her sister in bikinis posing with their dad — taken at her grandmother’s birthday party, according to Ayla Brown — so if you’ve got any information that might even potentially embarrass this kid, I guess you’ll want to shoot that along to them. Her pop’s a Republican. She’s got it coming.

People with an axe to grind against Beck have some new ammo…

Good Solid B-Plus on January 21, 2010 at 12:32 AM

I haven’t an anti-Beck bone in my body, and this diatribe he did on Brown was asinine.

Kensington on January 21, 2010 at 12:43 AM

Total overreaction on Beck’s part; pathetic and disgusting on the left’s. I found the comment funny and the family chiding him onstage to be real dialogue and lovingly humorous. He wasn’t offering their “availability” for nefarious purposes, for pity’s sake. Grow up, people!

Mae on January 21, 2010 at 12:47 AM

that screen capture by politico is great. Daughter shocked. Mom/wife highly annoyed and shooting daggers. Dad gloating but not quite sure what he just got himself into.

Great stuff.

My dad raised three girls and has definitely said something similar to this before! He’s not creepy. Just corny.

In a kitchen table / cornball way.

He must be stopped!

Lol, clearly some don’t understand healthy father-daughter relationships. Watch Mr. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice. Classic.

Traditionally, it was the father’s duty to help procure husbands for his daughters by interviewing them and verifying their character. He ensured that the suitor could support a family, and was of good moral fiber before he gave his consent.

Feminism destroyed that part in a father’s role and duty towards his daughter(s). I find it refreshing that Scott Brown made light reference to it.

Old Brown’s daughter…

Caper29 on January 21, 2010 at 1:31 AM

Didn’t Mr. Brown also admit that he was going to be in trouble when he got home?

Hubs and I laughed during this part of his speech. It was such a “dad” thing to say. Made him seem like a regular guy who has a good relationship with his daughters–and his wife. :)

March Hare on January 21, 2010 at 1:35 AM

Glenn seems to be hypersensitive about how he rears his daughters. I think it has a lot to do with how he performed as a father when he was “messing up.” He’s reacting as a father who has guilt from his past, not as an unbiased pundit.

mauipundit on January 21, 2010 at 1:47 AM

My father would have done the same thing, and I would have shot back some silly sarcastic reply.

Geesh. There’s no fire here. Move along.

TheAlamos on January 21, 2010 at 2:39 AM

Of course Beck was ridiculous.

But, even worse, he was stupid.

Supposedly, he’s an insightful analyst and commentator on world events (suspend your opinions for a second, that’s what his job description suggests he is — it’s not me saying it).

Hey, Glenn. Think about this —

If (which is asinine, actually, but bear with me) Senator-Elect Brown had in mind the “pimping” out of his daughters, he WOULDN’T have said it.

Don’t you get it, Glenn? Or is your head as thick as it looks like it is on screen?

The very fact that he said what he did the way he did, in that public setting, is the best evidence that there was no underlying “dirty” message in it. I’m a dad and I thought it was a goofy attempt at being funny, in the moment (sometimes those don’t work). But, anything else, you’d have to look hard and then make something up to find it.

Which, of course, is exactly what Glenn Beck did.

That, I would suggest, is not in his job description.

Neither is being just plain stupid.

As for those baby pictures on a bearskin rug,

It wasn’t just Beck making an issue out of what I think were innocent, if a bit awkward, comments by Brown. If you saw his entire show on Wednesday, he came across as very judgmental and almost jealous of Brown. Ridiculed the Cosmo picture (hey, Glenn, drunk people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones), used the word “messianic” to mock Brown, pointedly referred to him as “just a politican,” and even threatened him with a “we are watching.”

It was a despicable display. I am so annoyed at Beck’s petty and wholly unnecessary nastiness that I don’t want to watch his show anymore. Perhaps Glenn is becoming a little “messianic” himself. After yesterday, I have to think there is something seriously wrong with the man.

There are some things about a strong father/daughter relationship that some people will never understand.uknowmorethanme on January 20, 2010 at 9:59 PM

Pretty much sez it all. The girls had no misunderstanding of Dad\’s humor, none at all – they thought it was funny. Their body language was unmistakable on that point. Besides, I guarantee he gets asked ALL THE TIME – if his beautiful daughters are \”available\”, and he just de-fused the whole issue with humor. Beck\’s overreaction? meh. non-story. As a guy who has to maintain heavy personal security teams 24/7 because he legitimately fears for the personal safety of himself and his family, I can easily understand Beck\’s knee-jerk on this one. At first, it took me by surprise too, but Brown\’s daughter\’s reactions told me all I needed to know.

Fishoutofwater on January 21, 2010 at 3:39 AM

Yeah – and for the first time, Beck really actually annoyed me today too, with his treatment of Scott Brown, come to think of it.

But even my wife, whom I adore, occasionally annoys me too. BFD – move along.

One of my favorite lines from Mr. Bennett is when Sir William comments on how lovely and “available” Mr. Bennett’s many daughters are and Mr. Bennett responds:

“Aye, aye, they’ve got arms and legs enough for them”.

Or when Lady Catherine de Burg dismisses, “Oh, daughters are of no use to fathers…”

Seems like Beck is concerned about being a leader of a movement, and Brown might not be fitting into his preconceived picture of the Future of America.

It’s a process, Glenn. Learn to adapt.

missl on January 21, 2010 at 6:02 AM

Beck is genuinely concerned about this country, yes, but every day it’s like the end of the world to him.

His research IS the best on tv, but I mean come on he’s gotta get a grip.

The first show of his I saw with in the first 10 mins it was pretty clear what he’s was going to be.

When the congress goes republican (not if), it’ll be interesting to see whether he changes his stuff.
He would help himself with people like me, if he calmed the hell down.
I had tons of hope restored when Christie won, knew then the country was waking up. With Brown, he’s got his signal to chill out.

Elizabetty on January 21, 2010 at 6:27 AM

Beck’s “concern” schtick is getting to him – look, Glenn may not be a big fan of NE Repubs, but his response to the whole non-situation was really, really stupid.

Glenn, I love ya baby – live just down the road a piece from ya – but don’t be a dbag on this. Seriously.

Well, this is the same Glenn Beck that said we were better off with Obama than with McCain. He hates the GOP and would like nothing better than to see the party go down. Beck has been a most valuable source for historical facts with his, and his outstanding research team’s, dedication to doing the job well and thoroughly.

That said, his personal style has given me pause for a long time, and this is not the first time that his somewhat subtle, seemingly joking, snarky comments against more honorable people, like Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin, have gotten in the way of his coming across as ‘real’ and sincere. Not to mention is almost paranoid style of delivering the info to the viewers.

My take on this particular bit of snarkyness regarding Brown’s joking about his daughters being “available” is that Beck went way over the top, starting on his radio program and extending it on his cable TV show, to the point of continuing his not-so-subtle putdowns of Brown in a fashion that was highly inappropriate.

IMO, Beck is feeling threatened by Brown’s win, and I think he resents that the Tea Party movement swung its support so strongly and enthusiastically behind Scott Brown…a natural leader who has his fingers directly on the pulse of the American voters, and his ears open to what truly matters to them.

Perhaps Glenn perceives Brown as a rival, or as someone who Beck thinks may have co-opted the Tea Party movement. After all, Beck seems to claim proprietorship for the TP movement as if it had its origins in his “912 Project”. And while Beck disclaims any interest in being a “leader” in any way shape or form, he does start off each one of his cable programs with “Follow Me…”. And, consequently, Glenn seems to feel the need to knock Scott down a few pegs accordingly.

Lehosh on January 21, 2010 at 7:35 AM

It is obviouse that he has a close and loving relation ship with his daughters, a good father that they respect and love, just as he is.

I can understand his making that comment as I also have a daughter in college that I love, cherish, and very proud of. I am not innocent of saying something that probably was not the right thing to say at that moment, or least it seemed okay up until the moment after I said it. That just the way proud fathers are

Franklyn on January 21, 2010 at 7:36 AM

It’s interesting that this has become such a “controversy”, I wonder if Glenn will address it. He likes to claim that he admits when he’s wrong right up front, but I bet he stands behind his “opinion” on this. He seems to have that reformed smoker/drinker (duh) mentality about requires being more adament about wrong-doing, (in his mind) than is appropriate. After looking at the clips I thought he had quite the prissy, judgemental, attitude. Someone needs to remind him about the whole glass house/rock thing.

anniekc on January 21, 2010 at 7:37 AM

Exactly. I don’t think she understands the nature of the people who have now turned their sights on her and her family – and I don’t mean Glenn Beck.

Django on January 21, 2010 at 12:14 AM

And this is why Brown and his family have alot to learn about the national political arena. Everything you say and do will be scrutinized and used against you. And as Glenn also said, “there are alot of crazies out there.” Someone mentioned Ayla being on Idol and she would be used to it. Idol contestants who end up not winning cannot even imagine what it is to be smeared by the likes of Kos and DU and Huff. I hope Sarah Palin gives them some advice on this. They will need it. They do seem to be a really nice family and I’m sure Brown’s comments were meant to be funny. But that doesn’t go far in politics. Ask the Bush girls, and their father tried to keep them out of the spotlight.
All those on here comparing what they or their fathers or their husbands would have done, have not experienced the kinds of attacks that the Palins and others have. As I said earlier, sorry but the Browns’ world will never be the same again. I wish them luck and pray they find the strength to handle what is coming.

Deanna on January 21, 2010 at 7:44 AM

“That is incredible. It just surprises me that people can be so negative,” Ayla said. “I feel as though all fathers across the nation can relate to having daughters and having these conversations…That’s our dad. There’s nothing creepy about it at all.”

I would expect Beck to apologize and say he overreacted, but he won’t…he might “apologize” as a politician does, but it just shows that Beck, like others of his ilk, is more focused on controversy and driving listeners, then caring whether he is trying to divide a family…
Hey Beck, just lay off the kids, lay off the dad, you don’t know them, you don’t understand them…chill out…

right2bright on January 21, 2010 at 7:50 AM

All I can say is I will give Beck this much of a chance: I’ll listen to the first 5 minutes of his radio show this morning. If he doesn’t start into a sincere apology not just to Scott Brown but to his audience, I’m changing the station and never going back. I suspect I won’t be alone in that.

I’m sorry, but I just have very little tolerance for cheap stunts for the sake of ego boosting at the expense of our side. Leave tearing ourselves up to the likes of PMSNBC and their ilk.

If Beck won’t take his job seriously he will be replaced with someone who will. This incident very well may be the beginning of the end for both his TV and radio shows.

As I said in the earlier thread, there was a similar sick incident years ago, not long after he went national on radio, where he went on for over an hour about a secret incestuous relationship with his sister that he later tried to “laugh off” as a joke.

Sorry, Glenn, crap like that, and trying to imply something similar with Scott Brown is not a joke, it’s sick. If you think that kind of thing is entertaining you need help.

Beck is suffering from a case of hubrisitis. He has done a fantastic job acting a conduit for connecting dots in the Obama Administration to far Left radicals, but he short circuits when he imagines himself as the absolute moral authority for America.

Not only was his reaction to Scott Brown’s comments over the top, he ended yesterdays show with this ungenerous comment (I paraphrase): My sincere congratulations, but just know we’ll be watching you like a hawk.

That being said, I will be tuning in to Friday’s documentary about revolutionaries.

Better for him to flame out now than later in the year, or worse, 2012. At the very least I expect the reaction we, his audience, have had to this will force him to walk the straight and narrow. Until he has his next psychotic incident at least.

The “incest” incident nearly cost him his radio gig years ago, I suspect this incident will cost him as well.

Beck is suffering from a case of hubrisitis. He has done a fantastic job acting a conduit for connecting dots in the Obama Administration to far Left radicals, but he short circuits when he imagines himself as the absolute moral authority for America.

I think this was a petty attack aimed at getting attention, and at his ego not being able to take the fact that Brown didn’t “kiss the ring”.

At any rate this shows you that Beck does not take his responsibility seriously. If he didnt’ have Rush, Hannity, or yes, Mark Levin to steal from, the show you heard/saw yesterday is the show he’d be doing every day.

wildcat84 on January 21, 2010 at 8:23 AM

I don’t dislike Beck, but he’s wrong on this one. He should apologize to the Brown family.

TERRORIST FIST BUMP at 0:56

Reaps on January 21, 2010 at 7:12 AM

I didn’t catch Beck tearing into Brown. I did watch Brown’s speech. When I saw the fist bump with the younger daughter, I knew what was going on. HotAirheads need to read the birth order books. That was a overly proud dad, just like me, making sure the middle daughter got a shining light because the older, idol, jock, frequently gets all the attention. I say ‘Good Job’ Scott.

That whole piece was off the cuff. Dad Brown may have some miss givings about current dating/boyfriends.

Blacksmith8 on January 21, 2010 at 8:26 AM

My dad never broadcasted my availability, because he was too petrified someone might take him up on it! My playing field was scorched earth until I was well into high school, where I learned guys make better friends than dates. Then some goofball came along and torpedoed that theory.

Beck should apologize, but from everything I’ve seen, he either won’t or will turn it into some screed about how people can’t take a joke.

pookysgirl on January 21, 2010 at 8:27 AM

Beck is starting to get hard to stomach. His whole ‘Jack Van Impe/world is ending” approach to discussing the days topics is depressing and I think the guy is losing it.

Of course I know things are screwed up, but I’m coming to you for some inspiration, not a reason to slit my wrists.

Pcoop on January 21, 2010 at 8:32 AM

I think I’m going to just go ahead and ignore this brand of stupid drama.

It’s getting tiresome and boring.

rollthedice on January 21, 2010 at 8:40 AM

As a father I live to put that look on my kids face. It’s why I had kids! If you can’t embarrass your kids life is not worth living. Now that I have son’s and daughter in laws it’s twice the fun for half the price. And if this pisses off the left it’s a trifecta.

chicken thief on January 21, 2010 at 8:43 AM

I thought that Brown had a great and spontaneous sense of humor… and his daughters didn’t rip him a new one, either!

Really, if he knows his family well enough to survive making a joke about them, and a soft, mild one considering that anyone wanting to date his daughters may soon get secret service scrutiny, then I really have to admire the guy. He survived to sunrise after making the joke and his daughters back him. Should anything more be necessary?

ajacksonian on January 21, 2010 at 8:46 AM

I watched Beck yesterday while he went on and on with “We’ll be keeping an eye on you” and “I don’t trust this guy” and was screaming at the television, “Shut up! Shut UP, you spiteful, jealous man!”
I was so angry with him for so this after all the good stuff he has done with black conservatives and what looks to be a brilliant documentary on Communism.
Olby, I just dismiss as a hate-filled jerk. Beck doing this hurt.

TwilightAuthor on January 21, 2010 at 8:51 AM

The left is just mad that his children weren’t aborted. Just think how those girls are adding to global warming.

The daughter has it right folks. The libtards just need to chill. Glenn Beck just needs a martini or something to take off the edge. Oh yah, that would put him over the edge. But how would we be able to tell?

Mojave Mark on January 21, 2010 at 8:53 AM

No big deal.

But take my wife … please.

Ba da da ding.

Rod on January 21, 2010 at 9:02 AM

Hmmmm.

Didn’t Obama say that kids were off limits?

Oh.

HIS kids are off limits.

I got it now.

memomachine on January 21, 2010 at 9:03 AM

I have listened to Beck religiously from ’03 on. Pay for the podcasts and listen to all three hours nearly every day.

However, his TV show has seriously reduced the quality … and sanity … of his radio show. He finds a good lead, runs with it, and then jumps off the deep end with it.

I miss the old Glenn.

Ludwig on January 21, 2010 at 9:08 AM

That clip made me smile. He’s being a corny dad and that’s it. Beck needs to get a life and move along.

My favorite line didn’t have anything to do with his kids, but was when he said he asked the president if he wanted to see his truck. Awesome.

Torch on January 21, 2010 at 9:09 AM

As a parent of 4 it was apparent that Brown was just making a joke and embarrassing his kids in public. All parents embarrass thier kids in public. I know I do. Sometimes its on purpose, sometimes not so much on purpose.

vcferlita on January 21, 2010 at 9:22 AM

I was so excited when WIND-560AM picked up Glenn’s radio show about 3 weeks ago. Finally Chicagoans could hear Glenn…well…I’m not impressed. I like Glenn’s books but his Fox gig and his radio show no longer move me. It’s all negative. Since WLS “the Big 89′” has Mancow(I think Alex Jones is a credible guy) & Cassidy on at the same time-I’ve start to listen to a lot of FM during the 9-11AM time period.

annoyinglittletwerp on January 21, 2010 at 9:28 AM

That family has a lot to learn about the media.

CliffHanger on January 21, 2010 at 9:45 AM

I think Levin hit the nail on the head with his “analysis” of what happened. It seemed, to me, that it was just a real moment where a goofy and proud dad stuck his foot in his mouth. While the daughters looked surprised, they didn’t look angry. If they’re not mad, no one else should be.

teffertoes on January 21, 2010 at 9:53 AM

Sen. Brown has just shown U.S. what is missing in politics, a sense of humor with a touch of reality.

The PC crowd and philosophy is responsible for creating a citizenry that is afraid to speak their mind, unless they are Demoncrates where any rule does not apply.

MSGTAS on January 21, 2010 at 9:56 AM

RINO of the worst kind.

Deanna on January 21, 2010 at 8:03 AM

No, he isn’t a RINO, he is a liberal Republican, that is pretty obvious, he hasn’t tried to hide from that.
A RINO pretends to be something he isn’t, Brown is exactly (look at his record) who he says he is…a liberal Republican.
Beck should just apologize, if he were a man, and move on…but he won’t, his ratings are more important, so dissing a family (to Beck) is worth it.

vcferlita on January 21, 2010 at 9:22 AM

From the beginning of man, I can assure you that kids think their dads are goofy…do you know what dad is not “goofy”?
The dads whose kids are in jail…on drugs…drop outs…those kids more then likely don’t have a “goofy” dad that embarrasses them, their dad probably isn’t even around.

right2bright on January 21, 2010 at 10:01 AM

I have three daughters and don’t think what Scott said was a big deal. Good for Miss Brown for sticking up for her dad. Glenn should shut up about this.

NebCon on January 21, 2010 at 10:02 AM

Meanwhile, HuffPo and some of the lefty gossip sites are posting a Facebook pic of her and her sister in bikinis posing with their dad

Pathetic.

bridgetown on January 21, 2010 at 10:03 AM

As a father I often say and/or do things guaranteed to embarrass my (now married) daughter. As I repeatedly tell her, it’s just one of those “no charge” services that I happily render as her father.

oldleprechaun on January 21, 2010 at 10:03 AM

When is Politico going to interview John Edwards’ kids?

bridgetown on January 21, 2010 at 10:04 AM

Beck deminishes himself with the Bold Fresh stuff and endless self promotion. Over exposure. I generally like Beck and he’s done a fantastic job at beating the drum for the cause and for that I am eternally thankful, but there was nothing creepy about Brown’s comments. Change the context and put him in a bathrobe holding a beer…. Yeah that would be creepy.

Father playfully needles kids to embarss them…creepy. Marxist art and endless self agrandisement with jutting, up turned jaw… Not creepy. Go figure

R Square on January 21, 2010 at 10:05 AM

I thought his remark was cute in a silly “Dad” way and really allowed people to immediately take him off of some pedestal. Beck bombed him, except I thought Beck revealed his own blechy sexism more than anything. Then again, I never have liked Beck much.

Sarah is probably laughing. Finally, she has someone to share the microscope slide of petty stuff the media talks about!

AnninCA on January 21, 2010 at 10:10 AM

I haven’t an anti-Beck bone in my body, and this diatribe he did on Brown was asinine.

Kensington on January 21, 2010 at 12:43 AM

Agreed. I was genuinely disappointed in Glenn yesterday morning when I heard this. I tuned in deliberately to get all pumped up and instead, I had to turn the radio off after a few minutes. It was like letting air out of the first big red balloon I’ve had since September 2008.

I appreciate Glenn’s concern, but really, to make this the FOCAL POINT of his shows on the very next day? LAME.

Laura Ingraham is ripping into Brown’s critics right now. Good for her.

NebCon on January 21, 2010 at 10:17 AM

Scott Brown arrives in Washington and engages in first media scrum.

Verdict. More articulative than Obama. Substantive and reasonable. Down to earth. No high sounding vacuousness. Personable in spades.

Unless Brown has some serious baggage, he is America’s next president.

Basilsbest on January 21, 2010 at 10:18 AM

Yep, I listened to Beck for a little while, then switched to Laura when he failed to apologize for what he did yesterday.

Without naming Beck, she just ripped him a new one.

wildcat84 on January 21, 2010 at 10:21 AM

Oh and MSNLSD averted it’s eyes when Brown scrummed with the media.

Good gravy. The guy hasn’t found his seat yet, nevermind has a clue about running a country. We’re dealing, in large part, with a president who was the same type, full of personal attractive qualities.

Let’s get realistic, please. We have some fairly complex problems to handle.

Animator Girl on January 21, 2010 at 10:15 AM

Same here. And every time anyone started to get him off this, he’d swerve right back into it. Deliberately. Repeatedly. To the point I turned off my radio rather than listen to any more of it.

Far as I am concerned Beck is done. He’s jumped the shark and self destructed. I’d be surprised if his ratings don’t tank. Roger Ailes is no idiot, this is why he’s not moved Beck to prime time despite his 5PM ratings, he knew he doesn’t have the staying power or stability for it.

wildcat84 on January 21, 2010 at 10:24 AM

I was struck by Brown’s comment during the speech. I thought how odd was that?.. However, as much as Glenn has done in the positive, he has been off base a lot lately. It seems to me he is in some sort of power trip mode. He has become the nations judge apparently. I have turned him off more and more consistently lately.

shar61 on January 21, 2010 at 10:34 AM

Beck was complaining about that comment last night. I found it to be refreshing, real, and funny. Lots of dads poke fun at their daughters, and I bet his daughters poke fun at him, too. Real families do stuff like that.

I’m sure Ayla isn’t worried about finding a man.
