Brown’s daughter to critics of his joke: Mellow out

posted at 9:57 pm on January 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

450+ comments already on the Levin/Beck thread. Evidently you guys are interested in this. Hopefully Politico’s interview will settle the debate about whether Brown’s kids really were outrageously outraged or not:

“I had no idea he was going to do that. I saw the script and there was definitely no mention of that. It was totally off script,” Brown said in a phone interview squeezed in between classes at Boston College.

She admitted that she was slightly embarrassed. “But that’s what gives people a chance to see my real dad.”…

Conservative talk show host Glenn Beck slammed Brown’s acceptance speech on his show Wednesday – specifically for broadcasting on national television that his two daughters are currently “available.” Beck appeared to compare Brown to Gary Condit, the former Democratic congressman who some suspected was involved in the disappearance of his mistress and congressional intern Chandra Levy, who was found dead…

“That is incredible. It just surprises me that people can be so negative,” Ayla said. “I feel as though all fathers across the nation can relate to having daughters and having these conversations…That’s our dad. There’s nothing creepy about it at all.”

She says she’s staying apolitical but is looking forward to meeting a certain roguish Republican ex-governor. Meanwhile, HuffPo and some of the lefty gossip sites are posting a Facebook pic of her and her sister in bikinis posing with their dad — taken at her grandmother’s birthday party, according to Ayla Brown — so if you’ve got any information that might even potentially embarrass this kid, I guess you’ll want to shoot that along to them. Her pop’s a Republican. She’s got it coming.

I was struck by Brown’s comment during the speech. I thought how odd was that?.. However, as much as Glenn has done in the positive, he has been off base a lot lately. It seems to me he is in some sort of power trip mode. He has become the nations judge apparently. I have turned him off more and more consistently lately.

shar61 on January 21, 2010 at 10:34 AM

As others have said, he sees in Scott Brown the end of his delusional dream of being the leader of some grand “third party” (which will only elect democrats).

I also think Beck has some delusion that he “made” Sarah Palin. No, he didn’t, Sarah Palin made Sarah Palin… She’d be wise to distance herself from him.

wildcat84 on January 21, 2010 at 10:40 AM

I don’t listen to Beck. He’s grates like nails on a chalkboard. This is beyond the pale and he should apologize for turning a joke into a ridiculously bizarre insinuation. My dad would have joked like that, probably not in front of a camera with an audience in the millions. And I would have been embarrassed, but that would have been the end of it.

I know what you mean, but he is right on target with a lot of his stuff about what Obama’s trying to do. I think he’s seen so many dirty politicians that he’s no longer able to give one the benefit of the doubt.

Note to Glenn. Hold them accountable AFTER they screw up in office. I don’t care what Scott Brown says about his daughter, or what kind of photos he poses for. Is he reading bills before voting? Is he voting on principle?

hawksruleva on January 21, 2010 at 10:41 AM

Beck is sensible most of the time but making a bid deal out of a joke is “over the edge” stupid.

duff65 on January 21, 2010 at 10:41 AM

It was an odd remark, but it was said in jest. End of story, Beck.

scalleywag on January 21, 2010 at 10:42 AM

So did Beck apologize today? I was excited to hear him yesterday but turned it off when he kept going on and on about this. Couldn’t get myself to turn it on today.

Thirty years from now, brown’s daughters will still laugh about their dad poking fun at them during his speech. What a wonderful memory for them to share with their kids and grandkids.

MyImamToldMeToDoIt on January 21, 2010 at 11:10 AM

Hopefully Politico’s interview will settle the debate about whether Brown’s kids really were outrageously outraged or not:

The left MSM were shocked, shocked at Brown’s joke, which was called ‘wierd’

We will never know the absolute truth about the event, but I felt it did not hurt him with the crowd, It surprised them, and IMHO he gained points

My instincts are it was a spontaneous joke, but it is an old lawyer’s trick to use slightly off, yet heart warming routines to warm a jury. It has to appear naive, amateur, and yet innocently spilled with good intentions. The jury feels a new intimacy with the poor schmoo, who only told the story from love and pride of family. They identify, they feel a bit superior, he becomes an underdog, and gains the ear of the jury.

When the girls did the ‘oh dad’ routine I actually got suspicious, but I give them the benefit of the doubt because it was truly funny given the context of where, and when he said it. He is very good with one liners

The only point where he lost the crowd, and the applause momentum fragmented, was his gushing buildup of thanks to a great guy, a war hero who helped me so much routine. He pulled this thank you while the crowd had been roaring, and when he finished by filling in the name, ‘John McCain’ the applause faltered. You could tell he picked up on it and moved fast to recapture his wave

That was my one bad instint of the speech, the sense he was McCains good buddy. A friend is already worried Brown might be getting staged to help McCain with another Presidential run. Hope not. I retain reservations on this point

Another point. The MSM criticized the Brown because he faltered with the teleprompter. Brown gains points because the public is really mad at the slicksters in DC. I did have a passing suspect he might have goofed the telepromter on purpose to look like he is not a polished politician. I assume State politicians aslo use these devices. If he blew it on purpose, pretty clever. If he really doesn’t have the skill, he only gains

entagor on January 21, 2010 at 11:12 AM

I have two sisters. My father would definitely have said this. In fact, some of what he’s said I’m sure Glen Beck would consider “worse” than this.

ladyingray on January 21, 2010 at 11:23 AM

I’m sure Ayla isn’t worried about finding a man.
hawksruleva on January 21, 2010 at 10:39 AM

Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot.

Basilsbest on January 21, 2010 at 11:35 AM

Expressing outrage over a harmless joke is really stupid. Beck should claim he fell off the wagon.

Basilsbest on January 21, 2010 at 11:36 AM

I love Beck, but his remarks about Brown are beyond the pale.

The daughter incident was cute. He and his family seem very down-to-earth. To make it seem creepy is stupid.

Beck also made a snarky remark about the semi-nude pic. It was taken a long time ago…about the same time Beck was an alcoholic and drug addict.

Give the guy a break. If he turns out to be a stealth progressive, we’ll all go after him. In the mean time, stfu!

Disturb the Universe on January 21, 2010 at 11:37 AM

Browns wife, his dad and even Ayla took it fine. That’s obvious from the thread picture. Ayla is a senior on a DI basketball team. I’m sure she’s suffered much worse “embarrasment” at the hands of her teammates.

TRY LAUGHING AT THIS…

http://www.dailypaul.com/node/122266

“Brown’s win evidence of Tea Party hijacking.”

Unlike Beck, Limbaugh, and Hannity would have you believe Republican Scott Brown’s Tuesday win over Democrat Martha Coakley is not the first in a long line of future victories for the “Tea Party” movement but rather a result of a coup d’état for the Republicans and a testament of a poorly run campaign and a disillusioned Democrat Party. Similar to the public’s infatuation towards Obama, Palin and other cult of personality politicians Brown’s win can be attributed to his ability to relate to his constituency and unfortunately not towards his ideological superiority over his opponent.

Had the Tea Party folks been concerned about his politics they would have had at the very least questioned his continued support and defense of socialized healthcare in Massachusetts, which has contributed towards bankrupting the commonwealth and lead to the highest rise in healthcare premiums as compared to any other state in the union. Even more disturbing, Massachusetts and Obama’s federal proposal, “Obamacare,” have identical mandates forcing private citizens to buy healthcare insurance.

Similarly, his claim that he’ll lower taxes and cut spending does not line up with his voting record. In a radio interview on November 3, 2008 on Boston’s WTTK he urged voters to strike down question one that would have ended Massachusetts’s 5% income tax. Also, according to the Centers For Small Government, in his eleven years in the Massachusetts state Senate he had not “authored, sponsored, or introduced” one bill which would have “cut as little as 5% of total state government spending.”

He has even departed from his support for a cap-and-trade. According to a the Boston Globe “In 2008, he [Brown] voted with the Legislature for Massachusetts to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a pact among Northeastern states requiring power plants to reduce emissions or to buy credits from cleaner industries.” The Globe continues by quoting Brown directly where he stated “Reducing carbon dioxide emission in Massachusetts has long been a priority of mine,’’and “Passing this legislation is an important step . . . towards improving our environment.’’

He is however, the sixtieth vote and will vote against Democrats to stop healthcare reform. Once again his record seems to indicate he will do otherwise, the Boston PBS affiliate reported that Brown voted with and not against his Democrat counterparts in the state Senate 91% of the time. The only aspect of Brown’s history we cannot criticize is his foreign policy simply because he doesn’t have any experience in the federal arena of fear mongering. However, his support of Obama’s troop surge in Afghanistan and his willingness to deprive those on US soil of constitutional due process is quite disturbing. At the very least he is just another opportunistic politician who will readily compromise his true beliefs during his campaign and then fall back on his promises once in office.

WELL NEOCONS YOU HAVE DONE IT YET AGAIN!

BobAnthony on January 21, 2010 at 12:12 PM

However, his support of Obama’s troop surge in Afghanistan and his willingness to deprive those on US soil of constitutional due process is quite disturbing.

Actually intelligent people find his rational approach to fighting a war reassuring.

Basilsbest on January 21, 2010 at 12:18 PM

So far the neocons have prevented Iraq from developing nuclear weapons, liberated 28 million people, handed al Qaeda a humiliating defeat in Iraq and turned Iraq from an enemy into an ally in the war on terror. And in less than 7 years. What have you anti-neocons done?

Basilsbest on January 21, 2010 at 12:22 PM

Shut up Beck. I’m right up to here with you lately. You certainly don’t seem to know which battles to fight and which ones to leave alone. Get off the air and bloviate elsewhere, big mouthed pompous a$$. You have definitely closed the door on much interface on Fox with Brown going forward. Nice work.

Disturb the Universe on January 21, 2010 at 11:37 AM

I agree, give him a break. He hasn’t even been sworn in yet and we’ve already been treated to the spectacle of seeing conservatives eating their own.

Brown is certainly not a stealth progressive by the way. One doesn’t need to hide their “progressivism” to win an election in Mass (my home state). But be prepared for some disappointments though. This guy was elected by moderate independents so he will need to prove that moderation in order to have any chance for re-election in 3 years. The Dems won’t get caught off guard next time around so he’ll be in for a much tougher fight. What us hard core conservatives have to decide is this….do we want a moderate conservative who can win re-election and hold onto this Senate seat long term and vote with us at least half the time. Or do we want want him to tow the hard-core conservative line, get ousted in 3 years, and then see his seat replaced with another Ted Kennedy who will be a rubber stamp for the hard core left wing agenda. I’ll choose the former over the latter any day.

Good points.

I didn’t really think he was a stealth progressive, I just can’t see why Beck is so immediately hostile to him.

Is this the same girl from American Idol?

I don’t follow tv shows, and I didn’t watch the Brown acceptance speech.

If she’s the same girl, she has a recording contract, and plays basketball for Boston College.
Huffpo isn’t going to get much traction going after this girl.
Everything you see about her makes her look better.

Perhaps Andrew Sullivan’s uterus exam will turn up something, but I doubt it.

Ayla Brown has her own life, separate from what her father does for a living.

If you click the video, with it comes a bunch of youtube vid links featuring her idol performances, singing the national anthem before a BC game (she’s # 1).

Her reaction to being told she’s going to Hollywood in one of them is lots of fun.

AnninCA

Frankly, Ann, I’ve never found you remotely credible.

And to act like you just realized there are those who think Beck is insane is just preposterous, since people post to that effect everytime a Glenn Beck thread pops up.

You should be pleased that those of us who respect Beck have the integrity to call him out when he makes a dumb comment as he did here.

That is the very antithesis of the group think mentality of which Beck fans are often accused.

I don’t care who you are; if you are wrong, I’m going to tell you.
