Steny Hoyer: You know why voters are angry? Because of GOP obstructionism; Update: Voters now evenly split on which party should run Congress

posted at 7:07 pm on January 19, 2010 by Allahpundit

For having the elephantine balls to try this spin today of all days, with Brown poised to take Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat by promising to obstruct ObamaCare, I raise a glass to our House Majority Leader. Madam Speaker herself couldn’t do it any lamer:

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) on Tuesday said that angst voters have expressed early this election year is the result of GOP obstructionism, not the Democrats agenda…

“I think what the public is angry about is they see, first of all, an opposition for opposition’s sake,” Hoyer told reporters…

The Maryland lawmaker did acknowledge that Democrats have been hit because they are the party in power and the economy continues to struggle.

“We’re all pretty unpopular..Why? Because people don’t feel good and we’re the leaders and we’re in office and they expected us to do something,” he said.

True, that’s part of it. Also part of it: Per NBC’s new poll, released just within the past few hours, public approval of their utopian boondoggle is still jammed deep in the toilet. If they can’t sell it to deep blue Massachusetts voters, who know that they hold the fate of the bill in their hands, how are they going to sell it to America before the midterms?

Incidentally, does this explain why Frank Luntz allegedly can’t find any Coakley voters for his focus group tonight? Because they’re all at home stewing over what obstructionists Republicans are?

“I just lost another one,” Luntz growled over his cell phone from a hotel ballroom at Logan Airport. In the last 24 hours, six Coakley voters have dropped out. By contrast, Luntz hasn’t lost a single supporter of her opponent, Scott Brown.

The problem isn’t money. “They’re getting paid well,” Luntz says, “probably more than they’re making at their jobs. And they still don’t want to do it.”

Instead, says Luntz, they’re ashamed. “They don’t want to be on television defending Martha Coakley. It’s passé. It’s socially unacceptable. I never dreamed I’d see Democrats in Massachusetts embarrassed to admit they’re Democrats.”

“This is the definition of collapse,” he says, remembering a similar phenomenon when Howard Dean flamed out of the 2004 primaries. Is that true, though? I mentioned this somewhere yesterday: What if the polls have been skewing towards Brown because Democrats simply don’t want to admit that they’re mindlessly voting the party line for an embarrassing candidate — even though, when they get into the booth, they are? AP pessimism meter check: Plugged in.

Update: That anger over obstructionism sure does manifest itself in strange ways.

All told, the new poll explains the climate that produced a close special Senate election in Massachusetts on Tuesday in which Democrats struggled to keep the seat of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy from falling to a conservative Republican in one of the nation’s bluest states.

Nationally, voters now are evenly split over which party they hope will run Capitol Hill after the November elections—the first time Democrats haven’t had the edge on that question since December 2003.

It’s 41/41 overall. Among voters with “high interest” in the election? 50/37.

No, Steny-baby! The voters are not mad because of what you so affectionately refer to as GOP obstructionism.

The voters are angry because a year ago, they voted for hope and change, and instead, they got you, and your boss Pelosi, and Harry Reid, and Barney Frank, and Christopher Dodd, and Al Franken, and the host of other members of your Democrat Party ilk who managed to wipe out auto production in Detroit, brought the entire banking indudtry to its knees, pretty much reduced the U.S. economy to shambles, and who are now hell bent for leather to pass one of the most unpopular bills in the history of mankind, a healthcare bill that is going to wipe out the greatest healthcare system in the world, as well as raise the taxes of every man, woman, and child in this country, like we need more of that!

THAT is what we are mad about Steny, you pompous ass!

Last time this should even have to be said. The Dems have control. Meaning they have the amount of persons needed to push thru any crappy legislation they want to. The problem is….the people don’t want it. None of this has to do with anyone obstructing anything, but for the Dems themselves, that either find themselves in political quick sand, or it’s just not liberal enough for them.

Hey Hoyer….to thine own self be true! Idiot!

What seems to get lost in all of these analysis pieces is that this is happening in the “bluest” of “blue” states (MA went for McGovern while Nixon took the other 49 states in 1972).

If a Democrat can lose (or come this close to losing) in MA, they can lose anywhere that the Democrats can’t guarantee a huge Democratic vote, including possibly some “safe” seats.

The tone deafness by Democratic leaders to this is remarkable.
For the past week there have been multiple stories about a “backup plan” for HCR. This is a political atmosphere where it would be easier to strike the letter “W” from the English language than to prudently think of passing HCR while maintaining a future in politics.

Hoyer, the American people became angry back in February when Santelli called for a tea party.

Patriots across the nation pooled their contributions together for Hoffman in NY-23, in VA, in NJ, and now in MA for Brown to counteract the huge political payoff that your Dem party received through the ill-named Stimulus Bill.

That bill has not addressed the decline of our economy, nor have any of the WH policies or Dem-led legislation. Instead you have spiraled us even deeper into debt while you attempt to seize control of our lives. And you call that idiocy progressive?

If obstructionism elects more Republicans, let’s have another few helpings.

I don’t think the liberals have figured out that obstructionism is a code word for lower taxes and fees. They need to get that idea percolating through their noggins.

You’re the House Majority Leader, Steny….all you need to do is get 218 of your side of the aisle to vote for the Senate bill. Just do it! Heck, you know what this country needs better than the rest of us peasants.

I think the true believers, like bleedsblue, would argue that the far-leftists simply have not explained their crazy nation/economy killing ideas “in a simple enough way” for the idiot voters to understand. I.e., their ideas and solutions are so damned brilliant, we trolls simply can’t understand them.

Sen. Brown won because he left the party labels to those who care about such small stuff, and focused on U.S..

By referring to his new position as the “Peoples Seat” he is telling other career Politicians (not a legitimate Job Description) that they must represent U.S. not repress U.S. with their ideas of how this country should function.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) on Tuesday said that angst voters have expressed early this election year is the result of GOP obstructionism, not the Democrats agenda…

Question to the mathematically challenged Hoyer: Just how did Republicans, with a House minority and 40 Senators up until yesterday, obstruct ANYTHING liberal Democrats wanted to do in this Congress?

The obstruction has come from Democrats, who were afraid of people like Scott Brown replacing them, who may now become even more afraid, and more obstructionist.

To paraphrase Pogo, for Democrats, “we have met the enemy and he is us.”
