Let the blame game begin!

posted at 9:30 am on January 19, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Who’s most at fault for the debacle of the Coakley campaign?  For some, that question may come too early, since the voting has only just begun.  As Politico reports, though, Democrats don’t want to wait for the body to stop twitching before doing a post-mortem.  Blame has already begun to splash on Coakley herself, but also the DSCC, party pollsters — and Barack Obama himself:

As voters head to the polls in Massachusetts, nervous Democrats have already begun to blame one another for putting at risk the Senate seat Ted Kennedy held for more than 40 years.

Many angry Democrats blame their candidate, state Attorney General Martha Coakley, for running a sluggish campaign that let Republican Scott Brown set the contours of the race.

Some Democratic strategists lay the fault at the feet of President Barack Obama, saying he should have done more to sell the party’s agenda.

And in private conversations, Hill sources say White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has blamed Coakley, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Democratic pollster Celinda Lake for failing to see Brown’s surge in time to stop it.

“With the legislative and political stakes so high, it’s unbelievable that the Senate committee and White House let this race get so out of hand,” said one senior Washington Democrat. “There’s a lot of blame to go around. Martha Coakley is only one of the problems here.”

The axiom instructs that success has a thousand fathers, while failure is an orphan.  In politics, paternity tests abound after massive, unexpected failures, and failure may have a thousand parents in this case.

Coakley makes an easy target, of course, and it’s not at all unreasonable to lay the blame at the feet of the candidate, especially this one.  Not only did she fail to do the basic retail politicking — in fact, showering scorn on the notion of shaking hands in the cold at Fenway Park at one nadir of her final week — but she couldn’t be bothered to carry out the tasks that would have allowed others to do so on her behalf:

Coakley was so confident, noted one fuming Democrat, that she even stopped the critical task of identifying supporters on the phone following the primary — the very foundation on which she should have structured her turnout operation.

Reader Geoff A points out that this is practically “Elections 101″, and especially important for GOTV efforts in the final hours.  Campaigns need these lists to be as accurate as possible in order to prompt their own supporters to get to the polls on Election Day, and to target leaners for an extra round of inspiration.  They can also focus efforts to convince the opponent’s supporters and leaners to change their minds, or at least demotivate them from going to the polls.

This underscores the impression that everyone has of the Coakley campaign — that she folded her tents after beating Michael Capuano in the primaries, just assuming that the Democrat would win the seat.  It’s the height of arrogance, and in this case, ignorance as well.

That doesn’t let others off the hook, though.  Why didn’t the DSCC intervene earlier?  They finally spent $2.5 million attempting to rescue Coakley from her self-imposed drowning, but as Rahm Emanuel apparently has fumed, their pollsters should have been on top of this race much sooner.  There is only one Senate seat to be decided today, the only one for months ahead and for a full year prior to this.  What exactly were they doing?

DSCC chair Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) says the lesson they learned was that candidates need to be aggressive even in the bluest states, because the electorate is, er, volatile.  But what made them that way?  The Democrats have held full power for over a year, and controlled Congress for more than three years.  It’s the agenda that made deep-blue Massachusetts revolt against their Democratic elites — and the failure of Barack Obama to either change course or control Nancy Pelosi.

Even if Brown loses today, all of these points are obvious.   Will the Democrats learn from them?  The only lesson they seem to have taken is to go negative against Tea Party activists and demonize Wall Street, Sarah Palin, and George Bush.  That is a perfect recipe for losing the largest number of seats in Congress when the entire nation gets the opportunity that Massachusetts voters get today.

Unless Coakley wins by more the 5%, it is a disaster for the dems…an absolute disaster.
They should win this by double digits.
So in essence the election and the ramifications of the election is being felt, this race shouldn’t even be discussed as a “race”, it should be the normal Mass blow out.
Get it? Just the fact that it is close is a huge loss for the dems…win or lose, it is obvious Obama is being rejected.
This is one of the most strong dem states in the union, 57 years straight a dem has easily won this…and after the loss of Teddy this past year, it should have been, if nothing else, a walk over.
Win or lose this is a disaster of epic portion for the dems…and if they lose, the greatest defeat in modern voting history…it will change the landscape for the next 4 years.

The media spin on elections has been perfectly consistent for at least 20 years. If a Democrat wins, the voters are repudiating the evil, corrupt, or incompetent Republicans. If a Republican wins, the voters are confused, misled, or angry. It’s not going to be any different in tomorrow’s papers, nor in November for that matter.

jwolf on January 19, 2010 at 9:41 AM

An acquaintance (Coak-head) was going on & on, two weeks ago, about how Massachusetts voters are intuitive…they’re smart voters who vote on the issues, not just because the see a (D) or an (R). Of course, this while Brown was only in Coakley’s rearview mirror. Wonder what she may be saying tonight…can’t wait.

hoosiermama on January 19, 2010 at 9:41 AM

The Dems will most certainly need a scapegoat to take the focus off the ObamaCare issue, which IMHO this election is all about. Coakley herself will probably get the big chunk of blame.

Win or lose, the Dems will parrot the ol’ “this wasn’t a referendum on heathcare”.

JetBoy on January 19, 2010 at 9:41 AM

That is a perfect recipe for losing the largest number of seats in Congress when the entire nation gets the opportunity that Massachusetts voters get today.

What other option do they have? Run on their record? That’s a recipe for disaster. Pretend they’re moderates? The voters aren’t falling for that one again. Admit they’re socialists? Even in MassachusettEs, they don’t have the stones to do that(it apparently works in Vermont though).

That leaves them with one alternative: the blame game. Well, two actually. Blaming others and ginning up hate for conservatives, specifically Palin, Bush, and tea partiers. The only problem with that electoral strategery is that it targets people who aren’t even in office.

With all the cheating that goes on with the Democrats on election day, Brown has to come in with a substantial margin to win this. Take nothing for granted. Get out and vote!!!

Hening on January 19, 2010 at 9:50 AM

Yes, Coakley was a crappy candidate and yes, the DSCC could have done more sooner to blunt the Brown onslaught. But, and this is key, just like Obama was successfully branded as an agent of change (and centrism) in 2008, likewise the Democrats as a whole have been successfully branded as arrogant elites that will pass whatever, whenever because they know what’s “best” for we serfs down here in Moronville. And a further push of O-care through some kind of legislative twister match will only ingrain that brand further. Their tone deafness and dismissal of the electorate is what led to Coakley’s troubles, I just don’t know what it will take to change their mind, maybe only a pink slip will do the trick.

I agree with what Brit Hume said last night when he asserted that a Brown loss provides the Democrats with a huge gift and that is a foil for th death of O-care and a chance to start over and diminish their current “brand”. The only question is whether they’ll accept it.

I disagree that this election is all about healthcare reform. That is an element and Scott Brown has done a good job framing the issue with his “41st Senator” unambiguous position on Obamacare. Regardless of that, I believe that this election is being fueled by voter outrage at this failed administration and an out-of-touch Congress not just over healthcare reform but also the economy, the out of control spending, the corruption, etc.

If Brown wins, it will be very interesting to see how the political class reacts. A repudiation of the Obama agenda today would have each and every Congressman re-thinking their allegience to the coward in the White House. After all, this would be 0 for 3 for candidates attaching themselves to Obama and his radical agenda. If you had told me even six months ago that New Jersey would elect a Republican Governor and Mass. is poised to replace Teddy Kennedy with a Republican- I wouldn’t have believed you. All that desire for change and anger over the status quo is surely being fueled by more than just the healthcare debate.

If this one vote makes ALL the difference, why was the DLC, DNC and Coakley herself so blase` about the campaign?
Maybe the Dems should stop with the “post-partisan and the lion laid down with the lamb” BS and realize that the American people and especially their base is real tired of being played for patsies all the time by our “elected” leaders.

I think it’s all about turnout and momentum, and whether or not Scott has enough of both to get the ball into the end zone. His supporters are energized and are heading to the polls for sure. It will be close.

DSCC chair Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) says the lesson they learned was that candidates need to be aggressive even in the bluest states, because the electorate is, er, volatile.

Interesting that a Senator from blue-state New Jersey would make that observation, shortly after Governor Christie replaced Governor Corzine.

The real problem is that Barack Obama has been TOO aggressive in jamming his agenda down the throats of the American people, who DON’T WANT IT. The voters of Massachusetts figured out that Scott Brown, who portrayed himself as the 41st vote against socialized medicine, could stop it, so they have their golden opportunity today.

So your the brave one going to the enemy camp today…

Just make sure you de-contaminate properly.

SHARPTOOTH on January 19, 2010 at 10:06 AM

But that would mean the bill would be heading back to the Senate? Are you telling me with a Brown victory that Nelson, Landrieu, Lincoln, and Bayh will all go down with this sinking ship? I don’t buy it.

I agree, but I don’t know what to make of it.I know o is desparate so no telling what they are going to try.

ohiobabe on January 19, 2010 at 10:07 AM

I agree with what Brit Hume said last night when he asserted that a Brown loss provides the Democrats with a huge gift and that is a foil for th death of O-care and a chance to start over and diminish their current “brand”.

volnation on January 19, 2010 at 9:51 AM

I’m hoping that Brown wins and Obama, instead of moderating as Clinton did, that he declines the ‘gift’ and puts the accelerator to the floor. I want the voters’ message in November to be thunderous.

petefrt on January 19, 2010 at 10:08 AM

But, just remember, it won’t be a referendum on Obamacare…even though Barry said it was.

kingsjester on January 19, 2010 at 9:34 AM

You are almost right. If Coakley wins, it is a referendum on health care and Obama’s awesomeness. If Brown wins, its because she was a lousy candidate and Brown probably invoked the spirit of Cheney to turn the hearts of the electorate to evil.

In the scenario that Brown wins (with no recount needed)…

HuffPo: The reason that Brown won was because all MA Huff-n-tata readers were too busy watching CNN’s coverage of Haiti and hoping Obama would tax Republicans more to eventually get sufficient aid down to Haiti.

Makes sense to me. Alinski! While everyone was focused on the election, Obama’s cronies were courting a turncoat!

katy on January 19, 2010 at 10:11 AM

I listened to Karl Rove last night and he had a great point.

If Brown wins, it is a strong reminder that ALL Conservatives backed someone who is not a 100% Social Conservative; IE Big Tent.

That should be the biggest news and threat to the Dims. We backed the a Fiscal Conservative who will represent the mainly Conservative social views of his constiuents.

I believe one was already done last week.

Doughboy on January 19, 2010 at 10:12 AM

The party strategists, paid consultants and image people seem to be pretty inept in both parties.

The Republicans totally screwed up NY 23 by not holding a primary or a caucus — and then anointing the worst possible candidate; and the Democrats were so busy basking in inevitability that they didn’t intervene on Coakley’s behalf weeks ago.

Yet there’s more money in politics than ever before. Somebody’s not getting their money’s worth….

Their pain is our gain. It will be fun reading their panic filled rants, but, lets win this thing. I am a nervous wreck.

Thanks for pounding the post for Brown donations. I am gonna need some Trader Jose brew to take the edge off this morning; because of this:

The Democrats have held full power for over a year, and controlled Congress for more than three years.

We are going to see the very angry “combative” man child that Obama is.
