Jim DeMint: Of course I endorse Scott Brown!
posted at 5:36 pm on January 19, 2010 by Allahpundit
Via Andrew Wilkow’s producer Nick Rizzuto. Er, wasn’t DeMint the guy who said last year that he’d rather have 30 principled conservatives in the Senate than a filibuster-proof majority riddled with RINOs (my paraphrase)? Is Scott Brown, who’s pro-choice and who voted for RomneyCare — which is so toxic to the base that it may end up destroying Mitt’s presidential bid — really a “principled conservative” in the DeMint mold? To put it another way, with DeMint on one end of the spectrum and McCain and Graham on the other, which end would Scotty B be closer to? Hmmm.
If he is a principled conservative, let’s keep it a secret for a few hours longer. Because Massachusetts voters seem to have a different idea:
A Scott Brown victory tonight will certainly be huge for Republicans- but will it be big for conservatives?
In the sense that it could kill health care and other major Democratic initiatives of course. But in the sense that Republicans are best off nominating far right candidates who the party base is completely comfortable with not so much.
Consider this: 41% of Massachusetts voters either think that Brown is a liberal or moderate and with them he holds a 79-18 lead. 59% think he’s a conservative and with them Martha Coakley has a 63-32 lead.
None of this is meant as criticism, mind you; I am, of course, famously a Chamberlain-esque RINO candy ass myself. But it seems we’ve moved pretty quickly from “no more moderates!” to “let’s agree on the big things.” It ain’t pure, but it sure will get you a lot more seats.

There’s a difference between RINOs who will support the party in Big Ticket items (which Brown appears ready to do) and those who will sell out for a wink from the NYT, (Grahmnesty, McAmnesty, Maine Twins)

For me, the most important word is “principled”.
I’d rather have a principled moderate like Scott Brown than an unprincipled conservative like Trent Lott.
sandberg on January 19, 2010 at 5:42 PM
RINOs are great if they come from blue and purple states or districts. In fact, they’re essential to building a large enough majority to get stuff done.
It’s only when they come from red parts of the country and start shaping the larger party policy (or providing the Dems cover for theirs) that there’s any issues at all.

I am of the “we should get as conservative a candidate as possible for a given seat” philosophy. That probably means Brown in MA. It did not mean Scozzafava in NY23 or Christ in Florida.
m2 on January 19, 2010 at 5:43 PM
Primary is over and Mr. Brown won, so Sen. DeMint will support. Mr. Brown is a fiscal conservative, have any social issues come up lately. That’s not rhetorical, I can’t remember.
Cindy Munford on January 19, 2010 at 5:43 PM
Precisely. Only a Lib-leaning RINO would question this. :)

There is a limit to the degree of conservative purity that a candidate can have and still be electable in New England.
That’s just a political reality.
I haven’t heard Brown say anything yet that would mark him as and irredeemable RINO. Right now I just want to see him elected. The rest of the battle can wait until tomorrow.

I think most of us can live with “RINOS” in liberal states. After all, it’s a start. What we are sick of is having to put up with RINOS in places like South Carolina, Texas and Arizona! Don’t confuse the issue.

My problem isn’t with Republicans with whom I differ in opinion on certain issues. We have room for people who disagree on this issue, agree on that, etc.
My problem is with people like the Maine Twins who are willing to vote with liberals simply because “history calls”. No principled belief, no known disagreement, just “hey, this seems popular and we’ll be liked by liberals”.
amerpundit on January 19, 2010 at 5:46 PM

spmat on January 19, 2010 at 5:46 PM
I’m just curious how many actual RINOs are called that purely on the grounds of their stands on “social” issues.
I can’t think of a single “social moderate” in the Senate who is actually an honest-to-God smaller government fiscal conservative. It’s more often the other way around (like McCain and Grahamnesty.)
Collins? Snowe? Voinovich?
Please.
Scott Brown could be the first.

There is a difference between voting for State-run health care at the state-level versus the federal level. Conservatives should not automatically assume how one votes at the state level will dictate how they vote at the federal level.
For example, the last truly hands off the economy President, Calvin Coolidge, supported wage controls and other labor regulations as governor of MA, but never touched those issues as President.

WashJeff on January 19, 2010 at 5:47 PM
Depends on the State and the race. Scozzafava was running in a Red district and her opponent was more conservative than she was. It was just plain dumb to run a RINO there. Mass is an extremely blue state. We all know that. The goal should not be purity. The goal should be to elect as many honest conservatives as possible and when its not possible put someone in there who can win/obstruct the Commies from taking over.

Brown is NOT Scuzzyfava. Conservatives welcome diverse opinion, just not liberals masquerading as one of us. Scuzzy is a democrat, through and through. I agree with Brown 80% of the time. I don’t agree with anyone 100%.
JustTruth101 on January 19, 2010 at 5:50 PM
The thing is he’s sounded more conservative on fiscal policy than the vast majority of conservatives already in Congress. If he becomes the Republican fiscal spine for the bunch of lily-livered Milquetoasts already there, then things will be looking up for November.

The major difference between Brown and Scuzzyfuzzy is that the voters chose Brown in a primary, and Scuzzyfuzzy was hoisted upon the people by the establishment.
Brown is the most conservative legislator out of the Massachusetts State Senate. But this IS Massachusetts, so he will be perceived more moderate than national conservatives.
But he is the most conservative we’re going to get elected out of Massachusetts.
Enoxo on January 19, 2010 at 5:52 PM
Right now ObamaCare is the most important thing.
I read Scott Brown’s positions and he sounds pretty dang conservative to me – especially on the big important stuff.
gophergirl on January 19, 2010 at 5:52 PM
This doesn’t make sense. A ballot with two votes is discarded. Who does that help? Typical dum dem, insult the poor people who organize the ballots.
bloggless on January 19, 2010 at 5:52 PM
But ask yourself this: Is Brown so moderate/liberal that, if he had dropped out, he would’ve endorsed the Democrat? No.
I recommend the implementation of a Scozzafava Test. If the candidate in question is one drop-out or Tequila shot away from endorsing the liberal Democrat, you’ve got a RINO.
amerpundit on January 19, 2010 at 5:52 PM
AP, Scott Brown fell into our lap. He wasn’t selected via a primary where we maintained a “No more RINO” stance then picked him. Nope, unh uhh. He is a target of opportunity and yes, the value of derailing obamacare is a higher priority than conservative purity. Now primaries on the other hand, are a whole ‘nutha story.
ted c on January 19, 2010 at 5:52 PM
Brown is far more conservative than McCain or Graham when it comes to reduction of government. The only thing they’ve got him on is the prolife issue, but you can be prolife and still be a progressive, like the aforementioned McCain and Graham.

tetriskid on January 19, 2010 at 5:53 PM
Isn’t this what you want? I don’t understand why you keep bringing it up as a negative against Brown.
So long as Republicans can at least agree on cutting spending, lowering taxes, supporting the military and national defense, and at least show respect for the social issues (rather than calling us H8ers or other smears) and maybe hold one or two themselves, I don’t see the problem.
Plenty of people were willing to vote for Rudy if he’d won the primary, and I don’t remember you bringing up his lack of social con creds like this.

I think we’re in danger of blurring the distinction between RINOs and moderate Republicans. They’re not the same thing.
A RINO is a hypocrite. (That’s one thing that perplexed me about our troll Proud RINO. How can someone be proud of being a hypocrite?) A RINO will say one thing and vote the other way. A RINO prefers to caucus with the Dems when they are in power. A RINO is a suck-up.
A principled, honest moderate Republican is IMHO the best we can hope for from MA, and I think Scott Brown is that. At least we will know where we stand with him, where we agree and where we disagree. That’s better by far than someone who will pretend to kiss our butts while studying our backbones to see which two vertebrae would be easiest to stick the dagger between.

I think your wild-eyed optimism and fanboi slavishness is as childish as it is misplaced. Brown is a nascent Gang of 14 RINO. He’s also the only hope we have of forestalling SovietCare, if the Stalinists in the Democrat party don’t force their Great Leap Forward down our throats anyway and if they don’t cheat Brown out of a win that he rightfully deserves.
Oh, and get bent.
