Four hours before polls close, Coakley advisor blames White House; Update: DNC official goes nuclear on Coakley camp

posted at 4:26 pm on January 19, 2010 by Allahpundit

I didn’t buy the whispers this morning about a 10-point lead, I didn’t buy the anecdotal reports of Dem GOTV workers being “stunned” by support for Brown within their own base, and I didn’t even really buy the significance of Scotty B trending above 80 on InTrade.

But as a strong signal that things are going badly for “Marcia,” I’ll buy this.

The [Coakley] adviser, who cited internal polling numbers to make the case, emails that, “There’s more to the story than [Coakley's poor campaign]. If Martha is guilty of taking the race for granted, so is the White House, and the DNC.”

The adviser pointed to internal polling to argue that Coakley held a wide — 20 point — lead on December 19, and that the damage she took between that survey and a January 5 Rasmussen poll putting the race at 9 points came from the national scene: The Senate vote on Health Care, with the controversy over Ben Nelson’s deal for Nebraska, and the Christmas Day bombing…

A White House official emails: “It’s a little mind-boggling to see political consultants spin the election before the election is even over. There’s only one reason to do that.”

Indeed, although between (a) Rahm whispering to people about how she and the DSCC ruined everything, (b) Gibbs whining at today’s presser that The One is “not pleased” with how she ran her campaign, and (c) Axelrod wondering aloud in front of reporters this morning why she didn’t ask for national help sooner, this ain’t exactly a preemptive strike from Team Coakley. There must be an awful lot of buzzards circling in those internal polls if they’re seeing them them all the way from the White House. AP pessimism meter check: Unplugged — with the obligatory caveat that if Coakley does somehow pull this out, the disappointment will now be so cataclysmic that we’re all going to need grief counseling.

Follow the Politico link up top for a list of ways that The One’s policies hurt her, starting with growing awareness that voters are going to get slammed in the pocketbook by ObamaCare and cap and trade. Under other circumstances, even as a lackluster candidate, she could have taken Brown apart. She could have been another Barbara Boxer instead of a bum, which is what she is, let’s face it. But in this climate, forced to defend Hopenchange, what happens? Brown gets a trip to D.C. and she gets a one-way ticket to palookaville. It wasn’t her, Barry. It was you.

Update: It’s going to be one awkward scene on the dais if she pulls this out. An anonymous Democratic Party official unloads:

The campaign failed to recognize this threat, failed to keep Coakley on the campaign trail, failed to create a negative narrative about Brown, failed to stay on the air in December while he was running a brilliant campaign. It’s wishful thinking from a pollster, candidate and campaign team that were caught napping and are going to allow one of the worst debacles in American political history to happen on their watch that they are at the 11th hour are going to blame others.

Before the DNC and DSCC got involved there was barely a single piece of paper on what the narrative is on Brown. The candidate in this race and the campaign have been involved in the worst case of political malpractice in memory and they aren’t going to be able to spin themselves out of this with a memo full of lies.

Do not fall into the liberal trap of saying she was not a good candidate…she was an excellent candidate, highly sought after and very well respected.
This vote is about Obama and the administration horrible track record this past year…and their insistence on continuing their destructive agenda, no matter what.
The liberals will try to divert the attention away from this disastrous administration by saying it is the candidates fault…baloney, this is a vote on the democrat agenda, in a heavily democrat arena.

The gladiator just killed the lion….

right2bright on January 19, 2010 at 4:46 PM

I wonder when one of these geniuses is going to admit that Ted Kennedy himself would NEVER haver allowed the process on this health care legislation to run this far off the rails. He would have personally worked out a compromise that would have gotten at least 3 or 4 Republican votes and made Obama look like a genius. He would never have countenanced a strong arm vote on Christmas Eve.

And Ted Kennedy NEVER would have sat and watched a bad Democratic candidate refuse to do any retail politicking, whether for his seat or any other. He never would have let a Republican’s TV ad featuring JFK to go unanswered.

Barack Obama used Ted Kennedy to get him the Democratic nomination, but clearly he didn’t learn a damn thing from the man himself. And so he totally deserves what is coming to him tonight. And I’ll bet that the Kennedys are secretly agreeing.

The concept of “coming up with a narrative about your opponent” is offensive.

What about being honest about your opponent and his points of view and policies IN ADDITION TO being honest about your points of view and policies? Let the people decide based on the truth, not based on how well you can twist a vote on this or a 40 year old paper on that?

JadeNYU on January 19, 2010 at 4:49 PM

What is funny, is that on LGF, Charles is lamenting Scott Brown probably winning and making him out to be an extremist. But, in the comments, pretty much nobody agrees with him, he put himself so far out there, he is all alone. Charles can not say that the right changed and got crazy, because he has moved significantly left, if he is supporting people like Coakley and calling Brown right wing, and at first far right wing.

There is a wonderful insight into Democrat campaign strategy contained in this memo. In their accusation that she committed political malpractice, the following complaint is included, namely that she “

failed to create a negative narrative about Brown...

I think that is a remarkable admission. In this golden age of hope and change, a milk and honey time of post-partisanship in which the way things are done in Washington must change, a fundamental part of the Democrat starategy is to “create a negative narrative” about the opponent. Failure to do so constitutes “political malpractice“. Obviously, this must be an automatic part of the campaign, and must be pursued, whether merited or not by the target/victim Republican.

This shows that negative comments about Democrat opponents are lies…pre-packaged tactics designed to defame the opposition and to give the media something to use to attack Republicans. It shows that the Hope and Change of Obama was a lie.

This is a remarkable admission that really ought to be saved and referred to in upcoming elections…and to be thrown in the faces of Democrats slandering their opponents and of the sycophantic media that will, lapdof-like, repeat the lies.

Blaise on January 19, 2010 at 4:54 PM

The internecine savagery, violence and bloodletting among the Dems’ political spinners, consultants and leaders now will rise exponentially as the hour of reckoning draws near. Am I missing something, or did they confess that her position on AMERICA’S WAR EFFORT was a political calculation — that she changed her view due to “Democrats [sic] concerns”?

Breathtaking evil, and mind-boggling stupidity to admit it.

The spin from Dems is pathetic. Why wasn’t the national party watching the race the entire time? Because they all thought it would be a walk just like Martha did. Of course the Dem would win “Kennedy’s seat.”

Here’s my question: If Brown does win tonight (and let’s say he wins with a healthy margin), what does Hillary do?

Think about it: Bambi is not going escape unscathed. There’s going to be a lot of p*ssed off Dems and looking ahead to 2012, Hillary might think that she could give him a good run in the primaries. She could position herself as the “moderate” choice between the evil Bush and the incompetent Obama.

Moreover, the longer she stays at Sec. of State, the greater the risk that she could be at that helm during an Obama screw-up in that area. So far she hasn’t been too damaged, but she has to know that Bambi is ripe to get hammered somewhere. If she’s going to bolt, better to do it sooner rather than later.

So, do we see an announcement from Hillary during the next few months saying that she’s going to leave the State Department? Interesting times …

Beck is just laying into the left. It’s hysterical. “Leeches” … “sucking the blood out of the neck of the Dems” [something like that]

Geochelone on January 19, 2010 at 5:01 PM

elduende on January 19, 2010 at 5:04 PM

hope not or else my inner daemons will get the better of me and I will remain in a vegetative state until 2012.

Geochelone on January 19, 2010 at 5:07 PM
