WaPo/ABC poll a vote of no confidence in Obama
posted at 10:55 am on January 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The latest poll from ABC and the Washington Post shows Barack Obama losing more ground with American adults, even as the survey expands the partisan gap in its sample to compensate. The luster has worn off, especially with independents, and ironically fewer people now credit him with any significant accomplishment than were ready to do so at the 100-day mark:
A year into his presidency, President Obama faces a polarized nation and souring public assessments of his efforts to change Washington, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Nearly half of all Americans say Obama is not delivering on his major campaign promises, and a narrow majority have just some or no confidence that he will make the right decisions for the country’s future.
More than a third see the president as falling short of their expectations, about double the proportion saying so at the 100-day mark of Obama’s presidency in April. At the time, 63 percent said the president had accomplished a “great deal” or a “good amount.” Now, the portion saying so has dropped to 47 percent. …
At the 100-day mark, nearly two-thirds of independents said the president had brought change; in the new poll, fewer than half say so.
What is interesting about the WaPo report is that it doesn’t mention any polling on issues. It mostly blathers about a “racial divide,” which existed in every Presidency of at least the last 50 years. Blacks rate Democratic presidents higher than everyone else, and Republican presidents lower; it’s a tremendously loyal demographic for Democrats, one on which they rely every election cycle. Nothing has changed in this presidency, regardless of the ethnicity of the current President. I suspect one would have to go back to Eisenhower to find anything different.
Since the Post doesn’t see fit to inform its readers about the issues in its report, one has to go to the polling data to find it. That has a problem as well. Their survey has the partisan split at 32% Democrat, 23% Republican, and 38% independent. That’s an increase of three points in the partisan gap since their last poll on December 13, and far out of the partisan-identification polling mainstream. Gallup put the gap at five points in the fourth quarter of 2009, while Rasmussen has it at 2.9%. Neither have Republicans anywhere near as low as 23%.
Bear in mind that Obama only won the popular vote by seven points, and that was well over a year ago.
Keeping that partisan gap inflation in mind, the poll found the following on the issues:
- Health care – Obama down 44/52, was 44/53 in December. Strongly approve declined from 27 to 24, while strongly opposed remained at 43.
- Economy – Down 47/52, was 46/52 in December.
- Deficit – Down 38/56, was 37/56 in December.
- Right direction-wrong track: 37/62, was 44/55
- Confidence/no confidence: 47/53, was 49/50 in October. “Great deal” of confidence now 24, down from 29, and “None at all” at 27, up from 24.
- Accomplished much: 47/52, with only 12% buying the notion that Obama has accomplished “a great deal”
For the first time, more respondents in this poll of adults (not registered or likely voters) say that Obama has done a worse job than expected (35%) than a better job than expected (33%), with 30% saying he’s done as well as they expected. In his first term, the worst George Bush did was 43/31/25, in January 2004.
Imagine what these numbers would look like if the WaPo/ABC sample looked like Gallup’s or Rasmussen’s. In any case, they’re all going the same direction — down.

I think he’ll benefit a bit if Brown wins because he can’t push this crap through anymore therefore reducing some of the very strong anger.
However I don’t think he gets it. I don’t think he gets that people don’t worship him anymore. He is still functioning like people are fainting at the sight of him and that is definitely not the case anymore.

The thing about these polls, different from news organization polls about Republican presidents, is that the pollsters are hoping to find something — anything — to prop up their guy. Remember, these news organizations quite literally destroyed their own profession in their unholy quest to get Obama elected. They committed suicide on this guy’s behalf, so if there is any way to spin anything in the president’s favor they will do it. Yet, they can’t find an ounce of spin. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. That’s how bad the Obama presidency is. It really is a disaster of epic proportions.

Hope this is because of the skewed polling as mentioned by Ed, but if not, what are these people thinking??? Are there that many SEIU/ACORN folks?
Let’s see – major campaign promises
1. Transparency – The most opaque administration in history, running Chicago-style politics behind closed doors.
2. No lobbyists – Ha! what a joke
3. Honesty – This President lies every time he opens his mouth.
4. No earmarks – Another joke. They use earmarks to bribe Senators.
5. Clean up the corruption. As the boss has shown, Obama’s adminstration is as corrupt as any.
6. No taxes on the middle class. Try taxing the middle class for health insurance three years before the benefits kick in!
The one thing he has at least tried to keep his promises on is that he would be transforming America. Few people knew when he said this that would mean converting us from a nation of liberty to socialism.

That question is entirely to relative to be very useful. I mean, the country is still here after nearly a year, so some people are going to honestly have to say that he has done better than they expected, while the mere fact that the US is not yet some kind of Marxist utopia means that some will have to admit he did worse than expected.

I never liked the “as well as expected” questions from these pollsters. Those of us who were paying enough attention to what was going on prior to his election expected him to be a miserable failure and perhaps the greatest disaster to befall our nation since the Civil War. So, he has met our expectations, yet this response is too easily spun as being a positive.

I hate it when polls report on things like “…see the president as falling short of their expectations.”
Or, as the poll puts it
Is president Obama doing a worse job than I expected him to? Nope. He’s doing exactly as badly as I had figured he would. But when that winds up in the article it’s spun so that he’s “meeting my expectations,” which sounds like a good thing.

Coincidentally, the black population of the United States (via census estimates from ’09) is 12.8%.
Sigh, here I go with a whine about racial divides myself, and im sure this will end up pasted on charles johnson’s dailykos diary….
I think that obama as the “first black president” is actually doing a lot of HARM to ‘race relations’. a whole lotta white liberals out there have no contact with anyone of any different race (ie, maine, vermont, nh, etc.), and as obama’s numbers keep sinking, but as he keeps having 90-something % approval from black america, there’s going to be this divide. the typical ‘im green because tv tells me to be’ bravo-watching mother (moderate democrat) that sours on obama will look at black america and say “why are you still supporting this guy”? in the chris matthews racist-by-condescension mindset of liberals, the typical lib will think “ah, well, “THEY” have a president now so “WE” shouldn’t take that away from “THEM” by attacking obama”. i can hear chrissy himself say that right now, and not even realize how racist that is.
point is, i can see a huge problem by 2012, as white democrats have basically infantilized black democrats, treating blacks as a sort of unruly child that has to be given a lollypop (obama). i know the vote pandering goes on now and is pretty tacky (see al gore moaning in black churches), but i can see a sort of out-and-out “let them have their guy” sort of parental mode in millions of white democrats over the next few years, which is exactly the same mindset of the white democrats trying to hold onto segregation in the late 1960s.
result: WORSE race relations via low expectations.

He’s done as bad, if not worse, than what I expected. What I find most surprising is how quickly he has fallen. I had expected the masses to still be hanging on, but about all he has strongly remaining is the far left and the media. Since much of the media is the far left, this isn’t surprising.
I seriously wonder if he’ll make it through the entire 4 years without resigning or going insane. And if he does make it, will he run again?

Ace had a really good article, I think about a year ago, on this type of media bias. It’s a more delicate, insidious bias than outright lies or ignoring uncomfortable stories a la ACORN. Here the reporter is careful to frame the story so that Obama is the hero facing a variety of unjust circumstances, e.g. “a polarized nation.” If you compare this text to a typical story about low Bush polls, you’ll see a completely different framing, such as “Voters sharply reject Bush’s views on X,” where the voters are cast as the heroes competing against the villain Bush.

The election of Scott Brown would help Barry from himself and his jamming his radical agenda down Americans’ throat. Those “reforms” sounds wonder and not dangerous when they remain as vague concepts and the arrogance of Barry, Harry and Nanny may not be as obvious.

BuckeyeSam on January 18, 2010 at 11:39 AM
I’ve wondered the same thing. It pretty obvious that Obama has built his career around achieving “historic” things, but how is running for (and possibly losing) a second term “historic”. Bottom line is that Obama’s enjoys the royalty aspect of being POTUS but I don’t get the sense that he’ll do well if his agenda or ego take a major hit. We’re already seeing the fallout from his poll numbers and if O-care fails, then the rest of his agenda (and I would argue his first term) will fail as well. His whole plan was predicated on massive gov’t intrusion in our lives such that dissent was futile if not dangerous. That may be overly cynical but it’s more clear now than before that Obama planned on building a nationalized patronage system in order to perpetuate the Dems (and his) power. Take that away and what does he have, really?

Did someone mention polls??
So what might you believe about these data? You could refuse to cherry pick the polls. That has long been our view here at Pollster.com. Our job is to summarize the trends as best we can, without partisan favor. If you do that, we get a 8.8 point Brown lead.
Perhaps you only trust non-partisan polls. Then the Brown lead is 6.8 points.
Maybe you are a Dem, who doesn’t trust the Republican pollsters. Then Brown leads by 6.5 points.
Or you are a Dem who doesn’t trust the non-partisan pollsters either and who does believe in the leaks from the Coakley campaign. Then Brown’s lead is 3.8 points. (This is the only estimate that includes the leaks.)Or you are a Rep who trusts GOP and nonpartisan polls only. Then Brown leads by 11.3. (There aren’t enough Rep polls to run a Rep only estimate to parallel the Dem only, but I’d think an 11 point lead would be satisfying enough for Reps.)
There may be other ways to cut these data (IVR vs conventional phone, pollsters you’ve heard of vs ones you haven’t) but it seems quite unlikely that any but the most selective reading of these data can find that the race remains a dead heat. Brown has a lead, as of Sunday night.

Chris Matthews would comment on his, “excellent technique” and mention how happy Michelle must be to be married to such a maestro. HuffPo would do an oped on the technical excellence, and the NYT woiuld do a series on how faithlessness actually improves relationships. Crap.

B.O. is truly performing the impossible, attaining something I did not think anyone else would be capable to achieving!
Compared to the way he has stumbled and bumbled during his first year in office, making America look weak and foolish, empowering our enemies, destroying the economy, and now being hell bent for leather to obliterate our healthcare system, he is actually making the CARTER ADMINISTRATION look like the role model of capable and competent leadership!

Barry’s State of the Union Address will tell us everything we need to know about the next three years. Either he’ll see the handwriting on the wall, find a way through his malignant narcissism, extend an olive branch to the GOP and independent voters, and admit his error in going so far left, or he’ll deliver an angry screed, blame Bush some more, whine about “the party of ‘no,’” rant about “evil banks,” and so on. He’ll either show that he gets it or he’ll show that he’s never going to get it.
