Matthews gets tingle up his leg over Brown win
posted at 1:36 pm on January 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Its a mighty subdued Chris Matthews who acknowledges that the “bellwethers” in polling for the Massachusetts special election are going one direction — Scott Brown’s. Matthews also admits that the vote is a protest against ObamaCare, although with Obama himself campaigning for Martha Coakley and failing to move the needle, it’s hard to swallow Matthews’ contention that this isn’t a vote against Obama as well. Who’s the one pushing the policy against which Massachusetts is revolting?
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
For those tempted to see this as a conspiratorial attempt to make Brown backers overconfident, think again. Brown’s voters can’t wait for the chance to cast a historic vote ending the Democratic monopoly on their state’s Senate seats. If anything, this kills momentum for Coakley’s GOTV efforts — which already looks rather bad, as Watchdog.org and Yid with Lid report:
Meanwhile, across the street at the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the holiday and a bitter winter storm have kept the crowds away from a phone bank for Democratic candidate Martha Coakley. As of 10:20 this morning, not a single volunteer had yet arrived for the 10am phone bank. MTA Webmaster Meg Secatore tells Watchdog.org that the severe snow and ice that have covered Massachusetts highways are keeping people from the phones.
Matthews’ last question about Coakley is the one Democrats will be asking themselves for the next several months: How do bad candidates get this far?

PrincipledPilgrim on January 18, 2010 at 1:49 PM
Yeah, Matthews is goofy but this was pretty good analysis.
Apparently, it’s more of an anti-Democrat vote than a pro-Republican vote. Which makes sense since there are 14 Republicans in that state. Give or take 2 or 3.
There’s a growing segment of the electorate that dislikes both Washington parties.
The question is, who’ll will win them over?
SteveMG on January 18, 2010 at 1:50 PM

Hey Chris you big fat jerk. It’s the Hillary Clinton PUMA’s who you lied about during the 2008 election saying they have come back into the fold. The PUMA’s that the 0bama thugs beat up during the primaries. We are all indies now. Screw you. We are aligned with the tea partiers to take back our country and our party. The democrat party was taken over by Soros and the rest of the communists and we are taking it back, loser. Consider this the first installment. We are not afraid of the ballerina. Come on bring it loser. PUMA’s are in your face. Or did you forget, idiot, that Hillary won the primary in Mass. See ya, wouldn’t want to be ya. Jayrae on January 18, 2010 at 1:55 PM
It’s clearly a vote against Obama’s signature issue – healthcare – and probably his overall performance (what are his approval ratings in Mass?).
But they still like the man. Most Americans like their president even if they don’t like his policies.
Which is why it’s always smart to attack his policies and not him personally. It almost never works.

I think Matthews actually made some good points and asked the right demographic and political questions. Beyond that, it was interesting to see the subdued tone, and even Mika’s (sp) collapsed body language.
What was particularly interesting was JS/CM’s point that Brown was winning despite DC Pubs. Presumably, they would go on to lambaste tea partiers, yet here they acknowledge some unmentioned force that is causing the R label to rise despite the low regard for R leadership. Wonder what that force might be! Connect a few dots, guys, and you might find that the tea party concept is crossing party lines, and there is a broad-based demographic draw toward the Right. There are an awful lot of people, of many stripes, who feel that what we have in this country is being taken from them.

He’s attempting to do precisely the sort of harm early exit polling results do to winning candidates: PERSUADE THEIR VOTERS FROM STAYING IN LINE on the assumption that their guy is gonna win anyway.
Matthews is doing his level best for Coakley in that clip. It’s no surprise that he “called” the election for Brown, even as the rest of the nutroots and MSNBC are frantic with their last-minute GOTV effort.

In the end, Brown is just a better human being than Coakley could ever dream of being.
She is just an awful awful candidate but ultimately a bad person based on her record of betrayal of those she was supposed to serve, putting her own selfish political interests ahead of MA.
And people blame Sarah for putting the people of Alaska first and resigning so the executive branch could once again get a breath of air.

In a single party system, candidates don’t compete for voter approval, and aren’t held accountable to the voters. They compete for party approval, and are held accountable to party loyalty.
Clearly, the Democrats’ definition of an “independent” candidate (Democrat or Republican) is one who votes the Democrat party line.
