Poll: Brown up 9.6%
posted at 6:10 pm on January 17, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
A few caveats are in order before considering the details of this new poll. The media outlet that commissioned it, InsideMedford.com, looks like blog, but its articles appear to avoid any opinion tilt at all. The pollster is not a well-known outfit, but the report says they work with Harvard’s Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership — an irony in itself. The poll was conducted by telephone IVR, which has its advocates and detractors.
With the stage set, the results will certainly please Scott Brown’s backers — and also corroborates what I noted earlier about turnout modeling:
A poll conducted by the Merriman River Group (MRG) and InsideMedford.com indicates that Scott Brown leads Martha Coakley 50.8% – 41.2% in the contest to fill the seat of the late Senator Ted Kennedy. Liberty Party candidate Joe Kennedy pulls in just 1.8% support, while 6.2% of voters are still not sure. Brown and Coakley both have most of their supporters locked in. 98% of both candidate’s supporters say they are definitely or probably going to vote for their candidate. In contrast, 22% of Kennedy’s supporters are just leaning toward him, suggesting that Brown and Coakley may both want to take aim at swaying those voters.
Not surprisingly, nearly all of Coakley’s supporters approve of President Obama’s job performance, while three-quarters of Brown’s supporters disapprove. Coakley may see a glimmer of hope in the fact that more than two-thirds of undecided voters approve of the president’s job performance while only 6% disapprove, especially in light of the president’s swing through the state to campaign for her later today.
The poll’s sampling looks a lot more realistic than ARG’s from late last week as well. The D-R-I split in this poll is 34-17-48, giving Democrats a more realistic +17 partisan advantage. Plugging that split into ARG’s responses produces 50.62% support for Brown, and 42.07% for Coakley, or a lead of 8.35%. That’s within the margin of error in both polls, and reinforces my earlier analysis on the effect of turnout models on polling.
One interesting internal from this poll: Coakley and Brown split the women’s vote, 46% each. Brown has a 30-point advantage with men, a 30-point advantage among self-professed moderates, and a 20-point advantage among voters younger than 45. Any one of those findings are shocking in major races in or out of Massachusetts, but all of them put together spells disaster for Democrats, and not just in this special election.

A very liberal friend of mine in Mass. claims that she can’t vote for Coakley but refuses ever to vote for a Republican, so she’s staying home.

FYI to anyone interested. I spent several hours today volunteering at Scott Brown’s call center in Wrentham, MA. I made about 200 calls. I couldn’t belive how favorable the responses were. The Yesses were running 20 to 1 vs. Nos. I repeat 20 to 1. I was skeptical about the list, so I inquired how this could be happening and got a reasonable response from one of the coordinators. The list being used turned out to be registered likely Independedents or Undecideds. Okay, it’s not an entire cross sectoion of the electorate, but 20 to 1 for independents is pretty exciting. Most of those I spoke with are RARING to get into the voting booth and beat back the Kennedy ghost. My takeaway from this excercise is that the people of Mass. do not want to be serfs any more than the people of Texas do, but we would never have known it given the reputation of the state as being drenched in marxism. I’m from out of state and came up to volunteer.
A lot of the volunteers came from Rhode Island, which is next on the waiting list to throw off generational rule by corrupt Democrats. It’s coming. There’s a new Young Republican’s club (started at Brown University–yes, Brown) and a big Tea Party following in RI. If you’re in the state, check Facebook for like named groups. Rhode Islanders are starting to wake up. How could they not with 15% unemployment and a democrat state legislature that vetoes everything the governor does?
Driving through the southern part of the state I saw nothing but Brown signs, no Coakley ones. So glad I came. GO BROWN. Go Mass!, shake off them shackles!

Over 8%? What possible good could a poll with that large a margin of error be? Toss it.

I’m starting to get spooked by the polls… I’ll relax when the votes are counted – and Brown is declared the winner.
Remember, though Minnesota is also a Bluey screwy state – after Coleman had won his Senate election – it was within 36 hours that the democrats had found hundreds of “uncounted” ballots. Then, Soros’s Secretary of State in Minnesota helped guide the neverending recounts. Next thing we know – the dumba$$ clown was named the 60th Democrat senator.
Several years ago – didn’t a Republican win the race for Governor of the state of Washington? Again, after numerous shady recounts – go figure – the Democratic candidate won.
Let’s not get overconfident in believing the polls. In Philadelphia – some dude was interviewed on CNN as having voted several times – with the CNN reporter just nervously giggling. Not a new idea for them – as Ed Shultz has said. With the SEIU and Acorn mobilized in MA – we need to remember that one has yet to match the Democrats with the ability to steal elections.
We need to be the way the Saints and Vikings were this weekend – relentless, and merciless, and keep piling it on.

That sounds like a liberal. She has restricted her options and closed her mind to all other possibilities.
I bet she claims to be ‘very open minded’ as well – when in fact she is nothing of the sort.

Thank you for that report and THANK YOU for volunteering! This starts my Monday morning off just fine-n-dandy. On one hand, “Marcia who?” On the other, 20 to 1 going to the polls for Brown, snow or no snow, they can’t wait to get there.
It’s a good day to be a patriot! :-)

As we speak, trunk fulls of “lost ballots” are making their way into Massachusetts from Change headquarters in Chicago.
Roy Rogers on January 18, 2010 at 8:48 AM
The absentee ballots are an even better poll. As of last Thursday 86,000 of them had been submitted and its is believed a vast majority of those ballots were submitted by people voting for Brown.
It started snowing in Mass last night. Will Coakley’s constituency go out in the bad weather? We know that Brown’s will, if they haven’t voted already.

As if you had any room to talk after falling head over heels with that race-baiting, three-faced Chicago crook!
It’s high time there was some ‘change’ that didn’t involve making Bush look like a thrifty saint!

Even the Public Policy Polling is putting Scott Brown at 5 points ahead of Martha Coakley; it can’t help but affirm my confidence in Brown’s victory tomorrow night.
Morgan on January 18, 2010 at 10:02 AM
We don’t really consider him to be a hero and as usual ‘You guys’ totally misunderstand what’s going on.
Oldnuke on January 18, 2010 at 10:25 AM
MSNBC finds a Scott win so frightening that its web page only mentions it in very tiny print at the bottom right, top of their page. is this called “denial”?
rplat on January 18, 2010 at 10:34 AM
Forcing Obama to go to MA and campaign for Coakley is already a VICTORY.
Hero? Geesh. He’s not a hero. He has actually become a TOOL to express MA’s indignation of Obamacare. Why is Obamacare SO TOXIC in MA, a very blue state? I really wonder.
TheAlamos on January 18, 2010 at 5:16 PM
Not exactly “denial”.
It’s called “loss of corporate value” for a lying MSM.
