Not a shocker: Police department that “acted stupidly” endorses Brown
posted at 9:24 am on January 16, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
In July, the very last time Barack Obama held a press conference, Obama took the time to offer his thoughts on the professionalism of the Cambridge Police Department in their arrest of his friend Henry “Skip” Gates. After saying that Sergeant James Crowley “acted stupidly” despite not having “all the facts,” several of Crowley’s colleagues expressed their support of him by announcing that they wouldn’t vote for Obama in 2012. Their union has found a way to make their displeasure known much earlier — by endorsing Scott Brown over Martha Coakley:
All Members,
Members of our Association have inquired and requested that we endorse Scott Brown in the upcoming election against Martha Coakley. Ms. Coakley along with some of her campaign workers have talked publicly about how her husband is a retired Cambridge Police Officer, giving appearances that she is being endorsed by the Cambridge Police. This may be an innocent insinuation but most do take this as our giving her our support and endorsement. Yesterday, the CPPOA Executive Board voted to endorse State Senator Scott Brown in the upcoming election for US Senate. In an 11 to 2 vote, the Executive Board voted overwhelmingly in favor of the endorsement. We do not endorse anyone who advocates changes in the health care that take away any bargaining rights or increases our cost along with our contributions. Senator Brown does not support the Comprehensive Healthcare Reform Bill and promises to be the 41st vote to ensure its defeat. The current leadership at the state house, as we all know and have seen over the past two years, have an agenda to dismantle all of our hard earned bargained benefits and they will continue to dismantle these until there is a complete change from the top down. Martha Coakley is part of this Massachusetts leadership and she will continue with this agenda, only now it will be at the capital level and we need to stop it. So today, we the members of the Cambridge Police Patrol Officers Association endorse Scott Brown for the senate seat vacated by Senator Kennedy.
Fraternally,
Stephen Killion
President Cambridge Police
There are a couple of points of embarrassment here. First, Coakley’s husband, as Killion notes, was a former Cambridge police officer. Not only didn’t that give Coakley an edge, the 11-2 vote shows that it didn’t make much difference at all. Note too that the union opposes Coakley expressly on ObamaCare, but from the perspective of protecting their collective bargaining ability. They’re accusing her of being more or less anti-union, an interesting charge coming from any union towards a Democrat.
The other embarrassment comes with having an AG get opposed by a police union, which we saw in Worcester as well. We missed another instance of a police organization turning its back on the highest-ranking law enforcement officer in the state earlier this week, too — when the State Police Association of Massachusetts endorsed Scott Brown:

I wonder how the racist, marxist democrats are going couch this as a mean spirited Republican attack. That’s their usual response when their own past actions come back to bite them in the @$$.

When the Obama “Where did it go wrong” timeline is finally chronicled, the Skip Gates/Cambridge PD intervention will be the marker. Up until then, the majority of independents looked at criticism of him as far-right/GOP/Limbaugh bitchiness. The press conference was the first time he verified what so many on the right had been warning about; he’s not post-racial, he’s a professorial elitist that is going to merge Big Brother tactics with the Nanny Statist mentality.
He knows it as does his crew, which is why we haven’t had another press conference.

This is something that has baffled me about unions over the past 25 years. Why should any union be concerned about the quality of health care for any one except their members?
Having negotiated long and hard for these benefits what is the point of surrendering them? No matter what type of Health Care gets put into place it will be lousier then anything the top unions have negotiated for. This is a little like having your lawyer suggest you should plead guilty for the good of all defendants or something.
Worse the Democrats push for open borders and the unions are fine with it. It’s crazy.
The problem is the SEIU. They have become synonymous with the word union and they are entirely run be socialists/communists. They could care less about the union worker except for the ability to pay dues.
Rocks on January 16, 2010 at 9:46 AM
I would suggest that all those good officers volunteer to protect Brown voters at the polls on Tuesday. You know those union thugs will be bussed in by the droves. That and everyone needs to wear purple.

I hope someone is keeping a close eye on the absentee ballots coming from the military. I’ll bet that at least 95% of those votes will go to Brown, which makes them a huge target to the Powers that Be.

The Cambridge Police just bought Senator Brown a beer!
Roy Rogers on January 16, 2010 at 9:50 AM
While Brown’s victory is not (yet) a foregone conclusion, I think this bears some thought. That a Republican, one expressly opposed to the Liberal Holy Grail of socialized medicine, can even be this close with a real solid shot at winning in Massachusetts of all places, for the seat held by a Kennedy all of my life no less, has some serious and very interesting implications when expanded nationwide.
We’ll see for certain on Tuesday, but all along I’ve wondered just how far this Awakening had penetrated the average American. At this point, it would appear to be quite deep, leaving me hope that the country just might survive this after all.

I think the deal is that under Obamacare, they get to keep their healthcare plan. But the dopes don’t know that it is just for now. Once, barry accomplishes the theft of America’s health insurance policies, he will make a grab for theirs and under the bus they will go. Police officers are smarter than the seiu thugs, they know what will happen. If nothing else, maybe the seiu thugs will think about this.

jeff_from_mpls on January 16, 2010 at 9:51 AM
Nope, not a shocker. But oh so funny.
I’m not completely convinced that this is gonna help Brown win – let’s remember where it is we’re talking about. The SEIU busses are rolling into the state even as we speak. It is, however, evidence that the liberal establishment in Massachusetts isn’t used to having to work for a Senate seat. They never had to do this much to keep Teddy in office; obviously, they’re a bit rusty in the campaign management department. Coakley is a loose cannon – one with a few screws loose and/or missing. A smart campaign would have figured out how to keep her gaffes to a minimum, at least until after she was seated.
Too bad for them. Bwaaahaaaahaaaa!!!!

Let me be clear, he’s coming because he’ll be campaigning and that’s all he knows how to do. However, his aura of invincibilty has vanished and all will see him as the preening, shallow and narcissistic gasbag he’s been all along.
Wednesday will be the first anniversary of his inauguration; Massachusetts voters will present hIm with an appropriate gift by taking away from him one of the wrecking bars by which he has attempted to demolish this country’s institutions: the Democrats’ supermajority in the United States Senate. You are correct Scott Brown; you don’t owe the national party anything! You did it on your own.

However, I will wait until all the votes are counted because I haven’t forgotten that I once uncorked the champagne to celebrate the Red Sox winning the world series, and as I stood in front of the TV, bottle uncorked, I watched a very slow moving baseball go right through Billy Buckner’s legs. I will never forget it. We never did drink that champagne – so it was a loss on two counts!

I really like the idea of seizing the SEIU’s characteristic color and making it ours during 2010. Someone yesterday likened it to the purple ink used to mark voters’ thumbs for the Iraq elections and how voters used it as a form of defiance against those who sought to prevent elections from occurring at all. To wrest this color from the union thugs will put them on notice that we know who they are, what they’re trying to do and we will have none of it by working to defeat them at every turn. But let’s not buy their shirts since doing so would put money in their coffers.

As a former President of a police union, having bargained for health insurance, I can tell you that VERY FEW police unions will support Obamacare. Our premiums will go up as health insurance companies pass on the costs of increased premiums. Our re-insurance will go up. Everything will increase.
8 years ago we were part of a state/private insurance hybrid program. We negotiated to leave the state administered program and shop for our own insurance. Rates dropped by 300 dollars a month for a family plan. Coverage increased and expanded. We were able to bid for the coverage we wanted and tailor our program to our membership. I have no doubt that this same reality is why the union endorsed Brown. They see the numbers and understand the implications of a state run program administered through private insurance companies. Increased rates and less choice are the outcome.

Re: State Unions police and fire are different than all the others. They can get local community support for a tax increase when it directly affects them. Police almost always break for the GOP’er when Fire almost always breaks for the Dem. Just look at Kerry in ’04 and Rudy’s run. If MA fire hasn’t already endorsed Coakely, they will with Barry tomorrow. If they don’t back her, she is seriously done and it will be due to whatever threat Obamacare poses.
I don’t have a problem with public unions. What I despise is how under Barry they are trying to creep higher into the managerial and operational aspects of city and state. Across the country, we’re seeing elected officials knuckle under to unions by either not filling positions or making them union-only jobs. Before, we had a chance to cull some of the lazy public officials by changing councilman, mayors or governors, but the higher the union moves into management, the more impossible it will be without a lockout. That impending nightmare Barry will be face in the latter half of his term.

Public Unions: For over 33 years I was a member of one of the country’s biggest public unions, the NEA. I came to detest their tactics and often their point of view as I grew older and looked at them with a more sophisticated eye. Many(not all) school districts have high cost plans that could fall into these exclusive categories exempted by our upstanding and oh so honest legislators. This is a lot of exemptions. Is there going to be anyone paying anything at all out there?(except poor folk who don’t fall into any of these categories). Spread the wealth–yes, but who thought it would be spread the wealth among the wealthy. The Democratic Party is not, will not, cannot ever be the Party of the middle class and working classes ever again. Their credibility is blown. Throw them out!!!

Well there are unions and there are unions. I am on the negotiating committee for our local non-classified education union. We are the employees of the school who are not classified teachers. We are the custodians, secretaries, teacher’s aides, etc. I am sure that none of us would even bother with a union except that the teacher’s union was so incredibly strong that we were actually getting pay and benefit cuts in order to finance the teacher’s salaries. The main benefit I see to a union membership for us is that the school board gets to look us in the eye and explain why they are paying us what they are paying us. They now have to have a reason for pay-cuts, etc.
Any-who, I have been watching the Obamacare debate very closely as a negotiator and not just for the entertainment value. I predict that when we start our negotiations next month, the uncertainty surrounding taxes on Cadillac Plans/no taxes on Cadillac Plans, what the heck counts as a Cadillac plan, is going to make everyone’s job that much harder. This is not lost on rank and file unions who are not part of the cabal that is under the covers with congress negotiating with Reid and Pelosi. Those of us who are NOT part of the in group know for a fact that we will be sold down the river or thrown under the bus without a thought.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Cambridge police union members, as stupidly as they may act at times, can see this coming as well.
Lily on January 16, 2010 at 11:41 AM
Lily: Yes, someone outside the inner circle always pays for the antics of the big unions. Even within the NEA, teachers at the bottom end of the seniority list were always the first to suffer on all fronts. Teachers at the top/middle were pretty much exempt from any repercussions at all–even those(sadly)who were known to be poor, ineffectual or outright bad educators. I was building rep for many years and repeatedly saw the kind of thing you describe–and not infrequently. Still, you and I know that it would be even worse if left to the whims of the school boards and local pols. Can it ever come out right? No, I guess.
jeanie on January 16, 2010 at 12:01 PM
With the amount of police and public safety endorsement that Scott Brown is getting, the thug techniques to steal the election from Brown may be in jeopardy.
