Cuban cold snap kills 26 patients in mental hospital

posted at 12:15 pm on January 16, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Like my friend Bruce McQuain at QandO, I’m wondering whether Michael Moore will add this to a later edition of the Sicko DVD.  Twenty-six patients in a Cuban mental hospital died from hypothermia during an unusually cold winter in Havana:

Twenty-six patients at Cuba’s largest hospital for the mentally ill died this week during a cold snap, the government said Friday.

Human rights leaders cited negligence and a lack of resources as factors in the deaths, and the Health Ministry launched an investigation that it said could lead to criminal proceedings.

A Health Ministry communique read on state television blamed “prolonged low temperatures that fell to 38 degrees Fahrenheit (4 Celsius) in Boyeros,” the neighborhood where Havana’s Psychiatric Hospital is located.

It said most of the deaths were from natural causes such as old age, respiratory infections and complications from chronic diseases including cancer and cardiovascular problems.

The statement came in response to reports from the independent Cuban Commission on Human Rights that at least 24 mental patients died of hypothermia this week, and that the hospital did not do enough to protect them from the cold because of problems such as faulty windows.

My goodness, it’s a good thing that Michael Moore decided to lecture Americans on the superiority of the Cuban health-care system in his feature-length diatribe, isn’t it?  Otherwise, we wouldn’t be demanding a government takeover of our own health-care system to achieve parity with Fidel’s paradise.

I live in Minnesota, where it gets considerably colder than Havana for about six months out of the year.  Our hospitals manage to keep patients warm, clean, and safe.  When was the last time anyone heard of patients dying in an American hospital of hypothermia caused by their stay in the facility?  According to my recollection, that would be, uh … never. Where were the staff at this Cuban paragon of medical care?  When it got cold, no one apparently thought to close windows, or give out more sheets and blankets, or bring in more heaters … for hours.

What does it take to die of hypothermia?  Let me offer you a personal anecdote.  When we first moved to Minnesota, the First Mate was still an insulin-dependent diabetic, and one day she had big problems with her insulin dose.  While I was at work, she tried relieving the dogs out of the back door of the condo we were renting at the time, and passed out in the snow on a 30-degree day.  It took over two hours for someone to find her (after I frantically called the rental office when she wouldn’t answer the phone, whose maintenance man ended up saving her life).  She had a core body temperature below 80 degrees, and another 15 minutes outside would have been fatal.  And she was seriously ill before passing out in the snow that day as it was.

If 26 people in a mental hospital died of hypothermia, that means the staff at that facility engaged in malicious neglect.  And I wonder whether those people were truly mentally ill, or whether they were political prisoners, because even the least-engaged staffer at any kind of medical facility would have had hours to correct that kind of situation before anyone died.

Addendum: It’s also worth pointing out that a mass of people dying of hypothermia in the tropics doesn’t exactly bolster the claims of global-warming activists.

Addendum II: Why is the First Mate no longer an insulin-dependent diabetic?  She got a pancreas transplant, a procedure developed in the US and conducted by an American hospital, with complete success.   Just sayin’.

In the Double-standard world of the Statists, this is a classic case of the difference between weather and climate.

When it works in their favor, the Warm-mongers can claim that increased hurricanes activity means Global warming or Climate change.

When record cold tends to disprove the hype the good old double standard kicks in and the cold doesn’t mean anything.

Communist Cuba provides free health care to all its citizens but, though the quality of its medical system is celebrated in leftist circles around Latin America, it is also plagued by shortages. Patients are expected to bring their own sheets and towels and sometimes their own food during hospital stays.

The government blames the shortages on the U.S. trade embargo, though the embargo does not prevent the direct sale of medicine or medical supplies to the island.

I didn’t know DC, NYC and SF were in Latin America.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not one to defend Michael Moore or Cuba, but there is one problem with this. My husband and I lived in Grenada, and we now talk about “when Grenada will freeze over.” A friend was going to live there and asked me if heating was expensive, and I informed her that heaters don’t exist in Grenada because you would be insane to want one.

I realize that Cuba is way farther north than Grenada, so maybe it’s different there, but I can promise you that no one, including their very poor hospital, would be ready for any weather below 50 degrees F. Again, I’m not saying that Cuban health care is good, but they might actually have a bit of an excuse for not being able to heat the hospital – there probably aren’t any heaters!

Eclectic on January 16, 2010 at 1:15 PM

First I read this, and think OK, their is gonna be an investigation, good:

Tommy_G on January 16, 2010 at 1:19 PM

Just so you all know I’m not a troll, let me also add that someone we knew went to Cuba for an operation because the hospital in Grenada was so bad, and ended up having to fly to the US so real doctors could fix both their initial problem and the extra problems the Cuban doctors created. Their health care isn’t nearly as great as Moore thinks.

Quite a bit of difference between 12 degrees N and 21 degrees N.

It’s the USA’s fault:

Western Cuba is affected in Spring and Winter by the waves of cold air which blow from the United States interior. These cold winds can often cause the mercury to fall below 10 degrees for 1 or 2 days, these are temperatures which are unusually cold for the Caribbean region.

That’s degrees Celsius, by the way — the quote comes from http://www.holiday-weather.com/country/cuba/index.html which is a British site.

Then, there’s this from Ed’s cited Washington Examiner article:

The statement came in response to reports from the independent Cuban Commission on Human Rights that at least 24 mental patients died of hypothermia this week, and that the hospital did not do enough to protect them from the cold because of problems such as faulty windows.

Commission head Elizardo Sanchez said that so many patients dying of hypothermia was “absurd in a tropical country” and claimed the deaths could have been prevented if the government had granted long-standing requests from international aid groups to tour Cuba’s medical facilities, including the capital’s 2,500-bed mental hospital.

I’m sure the Cubans quoted Michael Moore’s glowing accolades in denying the aid groups access.

On the plane from Miami, everybody was returning from all over the Caribbean. They all reported cool to cold weather. When I said that I would have liked to have seen some “global warming,” one moron woman corrected me, saying the term was “climate change,” which means that “the weather is often the opposite of what it normally would be.” God help us. Minor quibble here – Cuba is under the thumb of Communism.

Although the two are often confused, Communism is but a distant cousin to socialism, and cannot ever achieve its goal of a classless society. This is because Marx completely failed to account for human nature when people are given absolute power…which amounts to the polar opposite of robber-baronism.

Lenin said that socialism leads to communism, which implies no ‘distance’. Both are the same thing as Nazism, too, though liberals wil never own up. When does the ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’ end?

Never, really, in practice.

In the essence of your post, you’re right: Marx never considered human nature.

There’s no polar opposite between hard-core communists and robber barons. While they might be opposite sides of the same coin, it’s still the same coin.

Hello, it was Han Solo who cut open the animal and that animal was a Tauntaun, a species of omnivorous reptomammals indigenous to the planet of Hoth.

If 26 people in a mental hospital died of hypothermia, that means the staff at that facility engaged in malicious neglect

You are assuming there is adequate staff to neglect them – it’s more likely that there is a ratio of 1-100. After all who’s going to complain?

Let’s not forget that Cuba cleaned house in the 80′s – sending all the mentally ill patients as refugees to Florida. So who replenished their system in the last 20-30 years? Young people? We’re not talking about wards of old sick folks here. Most of Cuba’s mentally ill patients are there on a non-voluntary basis, under the Cuban Mental Health Act. They are also very fond of using ECT (shock therapy) on their patients.

The Progressives & Communists hate the mentally ill – They hate the weak & either kill or neglect them. Eugenics.

The real Cuba

Hi, hon!

I note no trolls have weighed in on this. Communism is an epic fail and history proves it. In the old USSR, people had to wait in line for their ‘allotment’ of toilet paper. That makes people ‘free’?

And then the Hollywood Left, that doesn’t donate a dime to immediate needs of those they love to claim as ‘loved’.

I mean, where are Bono, Streisand, Glover, Moore–pick a name. Which one of them is sending a truckload of blankets to Cuba, let alone Haiti? If they did, it would be on the news because those people love recognition.

Where are they?

Where is the DNC to say they’re sending a paltry $1000 to Haiti? If the DNC sent a mere $1000, I’ll praise them.

Where is SEIU? How about a $1000 from them for Haiti? Wouldn’t that be big news?

How about the ACLU?

How about PETA, for the animals in Haiti? I’d be fine with that, and say go for it!

On and on…

I guess my drift is clear.

Liberalism is an epic fail on all and every front it claims.

But you know that.

Libs are nothing but phonies, and I want that shown every time I can illustrate it by their own words, actions, or inactions.

Why didn’t Hugo Chavez send them some heating oil?

Maybe it was the staff, too.
