White House plan for ObamaCare if Brown wins: “I don’t think Scott Brown is going to win”
posted at 4:09 pm on January 15, 2010 by Allahpundit
Any spin doctor worth his salt would say the same but there’s a good reason why he doesn’t want to answer this question. Even if they’re willing to try to force the bill through Congress before Brown can replace Kirk, the force of the blast from Massachusetts will likely send Blue Dogs — including/especially our pal Bribetaking Ben — diving for cover, shattering the Democratic coalition behind the bill and leaving the White House powerless to rebuild it. There’s no plan because no plan will work. If Coakley loses even after The One hits the stump for her, what exactly is Obama supposed to say or do to convince Nelson or Lincoln that voting yes is still in their best interest? Have Rahm call them up and curse at them until they submit? Kaus looks ahead to the post-apocalyptic CYA:
I suppose, if the Congressional id is screaming for a way not to pass health care, the most obvious way that’s left would seem to be this: a Senator bails (Nelson, most obviously) or if Coakley is defeated they just can’t pass the bill before Brown takes her place. (Darn!) So the bill can’t go back to the Senate–any House-Senate compromise is doomed by the lack of a 60th vote. The only hope becomes getting the House to pass the already-approved Senate bill word-for-word (the Sudden Victory strategy). But just enough House liberals declare they can’t stomach the Senate bill–on the grounds that the uncompromised Cadillac tax is unacceptable, perhaps, or the subsidies are too low, or that a public option is essential. Presto, a train wreck. Everyone gets to go home and claim they were fighting the good fight.
So lethally demoralizing to Democrats nationwide would a Brown upset be that Republican candidates from as far afield as New York, Texas, and Florida are directing donors and volunteers to help his campaign. “If Democrats aren’t safe here, they aren’t safe anywhere,” says Alex Castellanos, summing it up. That said, the Suffolk poll plus the nonstop jamboree of idiotic Coakley campaign gaffes seem to have convinced righties that victory, however narrow, is practically a fait accompli. Is it? According to Bill Kristol’s sources, last night’s tracking polls show that the relentless attacks are, as expected, nibbling at Brown’s support, and with The One on his way up there Democratic turnout is likely to be a bit higher than otherwise. Not much, perhaps, but then it won’t take much to decide this. AP pessimism meter check: 2.0, up a point from last night, indicating mounting concern and increased chances of heart-ache. I’ve been worried about this. We’ve been pouring our hearts and souls into this (or at least some of us $$) for two weeks and if he loses we’ll be drained for the upcoming battles. Nevermind Brown, did the Tea Party peak too soon?

Only the poll from earlier this week. I was hoping SurveyUSA would poll this race. They, too, use IVR (automated) as opposed to live person-to-person calls.

I’m in with the Hillbuzz guys. This is what elections are all about. And if the 20-35 demographic can’t handle it, then what are we fighting for in the first place?
Brown is going to win. It might take weeks before he’s actually decalred the winner, but he’s going to win. Regular folks, even ones in MassachusettEs, are tired of Democrap BS.

Brown is not going to win, so prepare for heart ache. The 15 pt lead for Brown poll from PJM is craziness. The real implications for this race is that dembs are not safe anywhere. And as an aside, this current travesty of a healhcare reform bill will pass come hell or high water. Obummer has no choice but to Rahm it thru by hook or crook or he will be an utter failure. Dembs will all fall on their swords to pass this – Ben Nelson included.

Let me remind you a high Democratic turn out does not mean a win for Coakley. I’m Democrat and I voted for straight repub in the last election and will do so in the next election. Mass. has it’s fair share of Dems for McCain/Palin voters. We crossed over for them and never crossed back. Party affiliation means nothing. Tons of Dems will be voting for Brown and the DNC machine knows it and is terrified by that boost to Repub. and indi voters. I don’t know of a single Dem friend, family member or co-worker that didn’t vote Repub in the last cycle or the coming one
Bet on it-a ton of Registered Dems in Mass. will be voting against Martha.

They’re silly to drag the process out like this. Their best situation would’ve been to pass it right before the earthquake in Haiti. The longer health care hangs around, the fresher it will be in the minds of the voters.
Of course, they’re all in there angling for their own payoffs. They just can’t help but slow the bill down with their greed.

not at all. Even if he loses, it will be very close-something unheard of in the bluest of blue states. If we come close in such a Dem state, imagine the results in a not so blue state. Plus Dems will have broken the bank for just one seat that they normally would have won in a cake walk. The fact that they are so scared and it is so close is a victory in itself. It will be a huge drain on their resources

What’s her worst quality, to Mass voters? Her work to keep an innocent man in prison? Her work to let a guilty man enjoy freedom? Inability to spell her own state name? Indifference to the Red Sox?

I saw Coakley being interview the night before last on the Boston local TV station.
She looked, acted and spoke like a weak and defeated person, nothing like what she was like in the debate, only a few days ago. She’s lost, lost, and weak.
The interviewer asked her to tell a joke – “well, I’m poor at remembering jokes, but I have a sense of humor, contrary to assumptions”. The interviewer laughed at her, saying that Kennedy told great jojes.
Then he let her go and said “this was assumed to be hers, but since the debate, no one can tell any more”.

Rudy has been on the air all day here. He’s a good spokesman to comment on the disgust felt by that ad.
Brown is painted as refusing care to rape victims at emergency rooms. It has been reported over and over here that Brown put through legislation to let anyone who can’t agree with abortion on religious terms to be able to opt out. When that was killed, he voted to support the treatment of rape victims. The negative ads are going to sink the Democrats since they are out and out lies.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope Brown wins. However, MA has almost no track record for electing the GOP to national office over the last 30 years. That’s why I feel, regardless of the outcome of this particular race, the broader ramifications for the elections in Nov are what this is really about – That dembs are in serious trouble all over. Unfortunately, the healthcare monstosity is going to get rammed thru even if brown gets elected.
jagdpanther on January 15, 2010 at 5:45 PM
Remember that even though the Democrats control just about ever single office in the state that runs local election sites, if the race is within three points you will hear the spin of massive Republican vote fraud, followed by legal action to challenge and/or admit ballots.
Since the big media didn’t care about voting irregularities in the Minnesota Senate race, and with Haiti as an ongoing legitimate news story, the Dems have learned that they no longer have to do post-election vote juggling behind closed doors and fear being exposed. It can be done right in the open, with the knowledge that outside of a few yelps from the Boston Herald and the usual national conservative outlets, none of the media is going to care if Coakley’s people invent a hundred-vote election win over the next month or two.

If Brown loses support because of hacking at his character, when Coakleys is so questionable, works…than Mass. would deserve this woman. She is so far out there in left field, she’s a blurr.
I personally get turned off by negative ads. I was never for Obama, but was willing to listen to his message. When he claimed he was never negative, and then accused McCain of not knowing how to use a computer….I was TICKED!!! Love him, or hate him, McCain still bears the wounds of his pow days, and for that I show respect for him. That ad was downright low, and hateful. That’s when I knew for sure, Obama was just a mean SOB, that could dish it out, but couldn’t take it…even when it was the truth hitting him square in the face.

Even a Brown near-win, within a few percentage points, will demoralize the Dems almost as much and in the same ways. Brown’s campaign has already done a lot of damage to their sense of invincibility: Invoking Kennedy is no longer a magic wand, invoking healthcare is negative, the bluest state in the union is up for grabs…
And of course looking at how much time money and political capital they spent in Massachusetts, and the realization that this scenario will play itself out throughout the rest of 2010.
But no reason to slack off – for all we know Scott might need all this gotv effort just to make it a squeaker, so … back to the phones…
