New Coakley gaffe: Curt Schilling’s a Yankee fan or something
posted at 9:43 pm on January 15, 2010 by Allahpundit
A tiny mistake in the grand scheme of things, but combine it with her dig at Brown for standing outside Fenway to shake hands and the general perception that he’s more in touch with voters than she is and it’s a big deal. No wonder Ben Smith is pushing it late on a Friday night.
This, of course, is why The One feels okay about going up there. Even if she gets blown out, he can turn around and claim that she only lost because she was a walking disaster whom no one could save. And everyone will believe him. Because he’ll be right. Red-Sox-themed exit question: Is Coakley the Democrats’ Bill Buckner?

Blowback

Any bets that the Boston local and national media hive will come up with some eleventh hour ‘scandal’ or controversy about Brown to give the ‘Rat a boost.

too funny….
Coakley spokesman Alex Zaroulis described it as a “very, very deadpan” joke, and another Coakley spokesman emails to note that she has Sox among her supporters and that “Curt Schilling has been involved in a lot of strike outs over time. I guess Martha whiffed on that joke.”

I’m not so sure. If he invests personally in the closing days of a tight race, and his candidate loses, how can that not be a bad thing for him? How can it not add to the general impression of his weakness?

what does Obama have to lose. If he stays in DC and she loses. His entire agenda goes down. If he goes to Ma and she losses his entire agenda goes down. If he goes to MA and she wins His agenda is saved. there is no spin just hard cold reality. Obama needs a win. A loss either way with him or without him dooms him to lameduck status till at least 2012.
Of course if he goes and she loses he will lose a little bit more cache but in the grand scheme of things that is small potatoes with what is on the line. MA could be his waterloo

Yeah, if you love the game and go there, a chill runs up your spine. Maybe not quite like a tingle up a leg, like Chris Matthews gets when hearing the Lincoln-Jesus speak, but a chill nonetheless.
Ted Williams. Babe Ruth. So many more. They hit and ran on that sacred ground. I wish I could’ve been there, then again I’d be dead today.
I got friends up there, who talk funny and vote lib most of the time, but even they are voting Brown. Maybe it’s this Red Sox Nation thing, or maybe they’re just tired of being used.
Come next week, Coakley and a whole bunch of them in DC may need to be placed on suicide watch.

Isn’t Schilling the one who recently turned down a lucrative contract to play for the Yankees? I think it was one of his last years, and he said no way. I’m not a baseball follower, but I remember a story about this. Maybe it was another Sox player. Anyone???
conservative pilgrim on January 15, 2010 at 11:17 PM
Didn’t he bail out on that idea fairly early? He has served time in the political farm teams, as he worked for John McCain. If I were him I would wait a cycle before running.

Curt Shilling and the bloody sock (Now in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown) is one of the greatest moments in Baseball History.
Here is what that turdbucket Coakley doesn’t understand: Shilling didn’t go out there & pitch for himself, he had already won a world series with another team, and he was hurt – really hurt. He pitched injured in game 1 and delivered a stinker. But now it’s do or die- game 6 win and play one more or go home. Shilling takes the ball or it’s all over, so he gets the team doc to stitch him up and he pitches a one run 7 inning win.
Shilling delivered it for the fans, for the team, for honor. That is something that stupid turdbucket Coakley will never understand because she is in it for herself.

churchill995 on January 15, 2010 at 11:32 PM
But doesn’t that just point to more ineptitude on the part of P-BO and his party. This defense just shows how the Dems can only select “walking disasters” (Daschle, Van Jones, etc.) They knew all about her screw ups as Attorney General yet they chose her to run for that seat. They either ignored all of it because Mass. is Blue or they missed it during the vetting.
Either way looks like we may have another Epic Fail. And even thought Brown getting elected is the ultimate prize, I’d still like to see The One hung by his own petard and challenged regarding that defense.

Curt Schillings actions played a huge part in the rest of the ALCS and the World Series.

Tiny mistake?!! Allah, do you know any Red Sox fans? They hate the Yankees! Given that Schilling is forever a savior who literally gave his blood for that historic, curse-killing world series victory, to confuse him for a Yankee fan is nothing short of blastphemous. This is no tiny mistake to the voters in MA.

added to the greatest politically stupid phrases in the past 40 years:
“I am not a crook”
“I did not have sexual relations with that woman”
“Curt Shilling is a Yankee’s fan”
for those of us in New England, her verbal screwup makes Bill Buckner look like Babe Ruth.
viviliberoomuori on January 15, 2010 at 11:57 PM
I have to agree this is NOT tiny because it will ignite people who maybe don’t even follow politics that closely. I’m from Texas. Called my dad tonight who is a HUGE Red Sox fan from WAAAAY back (are there any other kind).
I asked if he knew that Curt Schilling was a big Yankees fan, and it stunned him speechless for a full minute. Then he said, “A YANKEES FAN? CURT SCHILLING?! I DON’T THINK SO!” I told him then what Coakley said, and he laughed and said, “You’re kidding. She didn’t really say that about Schilling.”
Remember that whole sleeping giant meme? Well, you can run all these stupid ads and say all these stupid things, but let me tell you, you mess with the Red Sox, and you are toast!
And for me, that’s how I feel about the whole Twin Towers in the ad thing. The rest was just dumb, but them’s fightin’ words there!

This is why it is so important for Sarah (or any politician) to practice her throwing of the baseball off the mound.
A good macho windup and accurate pitch, especially if she looks better than mom-jeans O-man is worth an instant 30,000 votes in a place like Fenway.
How can any red-blooded man vote for O-man then? “Oh, so you voted for the girlie-man over the manly-girl?”

A sense of the miraculous is starting to creep in. This just feels like destiny unfolding. I smell a blowout.

Coakley openly advocated job discrimination against Catholics.
A campaign aide assaulted a reporter right in front of her, with pictures taken, and she denied it.
The Democrats invoked the World Trade Towers as an attack on capitalism.
And she turned her nose up at the mere thought of associating with the unwashed masses at Fenway.
…..
But NOW she’s REALLY crossed the line, damn it.

Not until the Cubs win a championship. In fairness to Bartman, the umpire should have called interference. Bartman was clearly extending his arms into the field of play.
