Breaking: Obama may go to Massachusetts after all; Update: Will campaign with Coakley on Sunday
posted at 12:00 pm on January 15, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Politico notices a buried lede in the Boston Globe’s morning report on the Massachusetts special election to replace Ted Kennedy in the Senate. With Haiti crumbling, a war to fight, and ObamaCare negotiations hitting a high-pressure point, Barack Obama could only offer a two-minute snoozefest of a web ad in support of Martha Coakley. Now it looks as though Rahm Emanuel may be sounding the red alert at the White House and get Obama on the ground in Massachusetts (emphases mine, h/t Geoff A):
The White House has shown increasing alarm about the race, with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel placing calls to top Massachusetts Democrats to assess Coakley’s chances and weigh the costs and benefits of a potential Obama visit.
Former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani urged voters who rallied in Boston’s North End to elect Brown for his anti-terror credentials.
“His election, I believe will send a signal — and a very dramatic one — that we’re going in the wrong direction on terrorism,” said Giuliani, who opposes having the trial of Sept. 11 terror suspects in New York City. …
A Coakley loss was long viewed as unthinkable among local political analysts and observers. The state not only has a Democratic governor, but overwhelming Democratic majorities in its House and Senate, as well as an all-Democratic congressional delegation.
Just this week, the White House insisted Obama would not involve himself directly:
It was only Monday that White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that campaigning for Coakley was “not on the schedule.” Asked if the campaign had asked the White House for help, Gibbs said, “Not that I’m aware of.”
There are two problems with an Obama intervention now. It would signal to everyone just how desperate Coakley has become. And while Democrats might cheer a little retail campaigning by the Campaigner in Chief, his presence would serve to remind people of Coakley’s ongoing absences from retail campaigning. Brian McGrory made a point of reminding Boston Globe readers about her lack of dedication:
Martha Coakley made a jaw-dropping declaration earlier this week at the only live televised debate in Boston that she has deigned to do. She said, and I quote, “I’ve traveled the state and met tremendous people.’’
If she did, it was under the cover of darkness, with an assumed name.
Because if she had really traveled the state, if she had taken the time to meet voters, Coakley wouldn’t be in the position she finds herself in now, heading into the final weekend of this special election campaign in a perilously close race against a GOP state legislator nobody had heard of a mere six months ago. …
Literally, she all but vanished. She refused to debate on TV unless it was exactly on her terms. She went days without venturing out in public. When she did appear, it was typically to accept endorsements from elected officials or union heads in front of supportive crowds. She may have gone the first month of the campaign without ever meeting an honest-to-goodness rank-and-file undecided resident.
The second problem? Obama’s track record on the campaign trail has not been stellar. He linked himself to Jon Corzine very publicly in October and November, calling Corzine his “partner” — and blue-state New Jersey voters sent Corzine packing in favor of Republican Chris Christie. At the same time, Obama couldn’t fill fundraisers in Massachusetts for Deval Patrick, either. That Obama magic took place before all of the back-room dealing on ObamaCare and the job losses in December.
Obama may still decide to make an appearance — but don’t expect it to do much good.
Update: National Journal’s Reid Wilson outlines Obama’s dilemma well:
If there were ever a time for a Dem pres. to ride to the rescue and hold last-minute rallies on behalf of an embattled candidate in a deep blue state, this is it. If there were ever a time for Pres. Obama to use his political capital and sheer force of will to drag a candidate across the finish line, this is it.
And yet Obama’s involvement in the race has not included a visit, or a TV ad. It has consisted of a single web video, emailed to supporters yesterday, endorsing MA AG Martha Coakley (D), and a robo-call launched today. …
But, in reality, the situation is a lot worse for Dems than it appears. According to strategists familiar with internal polls conducted for Coakley’s campaign, the consequences of Obama’s visit could produce a net-negative effect on Coakley’s campaign.
Obama has a net favorable rating in MA, according to public and private polls. A Suffolk Univ. poll out today shows 55% of MA voters viewing him favorably, while just 35% see him unfavorably. But the intensity of voters who view him unfavorably, or who disapprove of his job performance, is so high that an appearance with Coakley could bring out more GOPers ready to vote for Brown than it could Dems set on their nominee.
“Obama is radioactive in polls,” said one senior Dem operative who has seen the campaign’s internal numbers. “Every time they dropped his name in a poll, it was awful. So you just can’t take those kinds of chances.”
Damned if he does, and slightly less damned if he doesn’t….
Update II: Damned if he does, from Jake Tapper’s Twitter feed at 1:50 ET today:
POTUS will travel to Mass. Sunday to campaign for Dem candidate Coakley
Yeah, but Coakley appear? Or will she be in DC huddling with lobbyists?

Coakley is like Jeanne Shaheen here in NH. She is not a strong woman, not an original thinker and is usually someone else’s tool without the mitigating circumstance of even suspecting that she is. A front for one or more persons looking to control the issues. Much as one might not agree with Olympia or Sarah et al, they are their own persons and do their own thinking, bucking the crowd if necessary. The same cannot be said of Coakley or Shaheen and will never be. Weak! Do not have my respect.

Wow, that’ll be like 95% of the vote! Un.stoppable.
NickelAndDime on January 15, 2010 at 2:41 PM
An appearance in Dorchester or Roxbury could really help Coakley. Altho the black vote in MA is wholly owned by the Dems, there probably isn’t a whole lot of black interest in this election. A targeted Obama effort might be able to turn that around. It’ll be interesting to see where he campaigns.
Infidoll on January 15, 2010 at 2:42 PM
Now this should be a new exit question:
If the One comes to Boston to campaign for Coakley and Sarah Palin comes to the suburbs to rally for Brown, who would draw a larger, more enthusiastic crowd? Just
askingsuggestinghoping. And before anyone says that Sarah would be a drain on Brown’s enthusiasm or increase Coakley’s turnout, compare the poll numbers before and after the DSCC started running ads tying Sarah and the Tea Party to Brown. They’ve actually gone up.

It’s also possible that Mass voters are tired of the Kennedys.
That sounds ridiculous, but one should never underestimate human nature.
Given the opportunity, they might throw off the shackles of the usurpers. You know, sometimes, the scum, aka the Kennedy “aristocracy” are worse than the lily-livered, inbred, European types.

The problem is that Obama does not work on weekends which begin on Friday after the toxic press releases of the week go out and ends when he shows up for work around 10:00 am on Monday. Maybe he can work her in on Monday before quiting time at 6:30, provided of course if he has not signed up for the afternoon on the links.
Perhaps he can work her in around lunch for a hamburger. Provided of course she can insure that the only ones in the diner are supporting democrates and she has the local unions organized to keep out any heckers and far right teabagging conservatives.
She might improve her chances that he will come; maybe starting those links a little later, if she can have a group of Haitian refergees flown in as a backdrop. He would be able to campaign that every Haitian should have access to free medical care, and promise a new stimulus package to create of keep a million jobs in Haiti. He could tell the adoring democrates that Coakley is the women that could make that happen by insuring that the nationalized Medical bill is passed in congress as soon as she is in office; lowering cost for all Americans who can not afford medical care and creating millions new green jobs for those that still need a job.
Of course that depends on the telepromter working. If not it will be a short speech. “Yes we can! Elect er, Coakley, er Yes we can! she will, uh uh, yes, pass that health bill, Yes we can! Get out the vote! Yes we can! We can do it, Yes we can, Yes we can!”

pedestrian on January 15, 2010 at 3:05 PM
I am surprised that the Democrats have not intorduced a bill to make Haiti the 51st state. That would have some constitutional problems, but that should not be a problem for an administration and congress who don’t care what the constitution says. The population of Haiti was around 10 million, a little less now. Making it a state, with Acorns help, would give the Democrats at least another 20-30 million votes in the next election.
With a few hand picked Czars by Obama and his socilist/communist advisors and cabinet, it could become the model socialist state, the embodiment of Avatar, for the other 50 states to pattern the selves after.

He’s desperate for more time to pass Obamacare. The Dems need more time and the voters (even in MA) appear unwilling to porvide it. Scott Brown is key. He becomes the ticking clock that has the best change of killing this lefty power grab, err of sending it “back to the drawing board”.

Who stopped being worried? Brown hitting it out of the park and Coakley messing up everything possible might mean a razor thin victory for Brown.
ElectricPhase on January 15, 2010 at 3:19 PM
I just had an epiphany. Obama and the band of thieves/crooks/thugs are throwing Coakley under the bus. You can’t make me believe they’re not ready to be done with Obamacare one way or another. If Coakley wins they can claim victory with her seat and with Obamacare, but if she loses, they’ll blame her and her poorly ran campaign and they’ll have the Obamacare burden lifted from them. I believe they’ve been looking for a scapegoat for quite a while. The proverb (whether it be Chinese or Turkish) that states “no matter how far you’ve traveled down the wrong road, always turn back.” This administration never wanted to admit they’re wrong. They’ve been looking for an out.

From our perspective, the Globe, Coakley et al, and the Obama administration are different tentacles of the same octopus.
I believe that most have made up their minds already that Scott Brown is a good and decent man, has been an honorable servant of the people he represents as well as a man who has served his country. We have made an affirmative choice and that choice will be Scott come Tuesday. He has earned our vote.
That part, I feel, is chiseled in stone at this point and nothing that Obama may say or do is going to change that.
To a great extent, this election is a referendum on health care reform. Brown has made that plain and has made his case. I am to the right of his position, which is fine, but I ally myself with him in order to have some effect on stopping this heinous piece of legislation.
So, when Obama comes to Boston to stump for a woman who has run a gawdawful campaign, had revelations about her conduct in office as DA and AG, with his poll numbers in a death spiral along with the spectacular machinations going on to pass the health care bill, he is only further beclowning himself.

Weekend News Cycle
Haiti All Weekend
NFL ALL Weekend
MONDAY – MLK Holiday – new TV programming, ALL DAY.
The NBA starts Monday @ 1pm with the Celtics and won’t end until somewhere around 1AM EST with the biggest West Coast rivalry, Lakers/Nuggets which is on TNT along with free NBA channel all day.
That’s a huge attention grabber of Barry’s core Urban Black Boston audience. Look at the stats from last year…
Combine that with all of the other new MLK day programming, and the already depressed Boston Dem base won’t remember to vote until sometime Tuesday morning. By then, Coakley will be fighting the polling news which will further repress her voters because if they hear she’s winning, they’ll think it’s in the bag or if they hear she’s losing, they’ll think it’s a waste of time.
Barry has to go just to break up the noise. And he wouldn’t go on Monday because it would be more damaging to see a weak black turnout. What’s he going to do, compete with the Celtics? Please. Barry’s a ball player. He knows better.
