The Biden view of transparency

posted at 8:48 am on January 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Andrew Malcolm of the Los Angeles Times’  Top of the Ticket blog has assigned himself to the Joe Biden beat, and that’s a lonely job.  Not too many reporters follow Biden’s daily schedule, and there’s a reason for that, one apparent from today’s announced schedule.  What do all of these items have in common?

In the morning, the President and the Vice President will receive the Presidential Daily Briefing and the Economic Daily Briefing in the Oval Office. These briefings are closed press.

At 11:30 AM, the Vice President will meet with Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood to discuss the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This meeting is closed press.

Afterwards, the President and the Vice President will have lunch in the Private Dining Room. This lunch is closed press.

Most people would understand that for the luncheon and the PDB, but Obama rather famously put Biden as the man in charge of ARRA, which we call Porkulus, by claiming that “no one messes with Joe.”  Despite that, no one has seen much of Joe since he declared that the US was in a depression back in October.

Of course, he does have one item today open to the press … well, sort of:

At 1:00 PM, the Vice President will meet with Iraqi Vice President Adil Abd al-Mahdi in the Roosevelt Room. There will be a pool spray at the bottom of this meeting; gather time is 1:45 PM in the Brady Briefing Room.

What the hell is a “pool spray,” you may be asking?  Andrew explains:

The “pool spray” mentioned has nothing to do with aquatics. It’s a coded message to media that a few select members will be allowed in to take pictures briefly — possibly for only a few seconds — as Biden and his guest pretend to continue their previously private conversation as if the meeting was open.

It’s a photo op, only just for a few photojournalists, and only as long as they don’t actually attempt to engage Biden in conversation.  Well, that’s certainly open and accessible, isn’t it?  But for the full Someone Left the Irony On Department treatment, we have to go to the final item on Biden’s schedule (emphases mine):

Then, at 2:15 PM, the Vice President will meet with Earl Devaney, chairman of the Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board. This meeting is closed press.

Not only has the White House put a complete muzzle on Biden — an understandable impulse for anyone who’s responsible for what comes out of his mouth — they’ve now closed their meetings with the man they put in charge of Porkulus transparency.  A month ago, the White House held a workshop on transparency, which they also closed to the press.  Apparently, the workshop succeeded!

Transparency and accountability — now off limits to the press.  That’s either the hallmark of this administration, an admission that Obama botched his VP pick, or a little of both.

But really, hasn’t Obama pretty much botched everything?

anniekc on January 14, 2010 at 8:51 AM

I don’t blame Joe, I blame the administration. If Joe had his way, the press would be invited to all meetings, including the ones in the Sit Room and in the VP secret bunker. Joe is all about the O as in Open.

Andrew Malcolm of the Los Angeles Times’ Top of the Ticket blog has assigned himself to the Joe Biden beat

`
Guess he assigned himself since he knows he will have plenty of time to spend blogging. I think I’ll assign my own “Honey Do” list and put on such exciting tasks as watching paint dry and watering the garden (in January in the Northeast).
`
I guess there is truth that “Nobody messes with Joe”. Can’t mess with him with that type of schedule.

CBP on January 14, 2010 at 9:05 AM

“Pool spray”?

I’m sorry, but that just sounds gay.

Someone who ran on “judgment over experience” and picked Biden to be his running mate? How the hell did 52% of the American voters vote for such a guy?

rbj on January 14, 2010 at 9:07 AM

Here in Wilmington, Delaware (Biden’s home town) even the local paper commented that Biden was invisible and inaccessible when he was here over Christmas. It was not exactly criticism, but it was close. They also have stopped running their “Where’s Joe?” feature every day (it was ridiculous anyway).

DaydreamBeliever on January 14, 2010 at 9:08 AM

Then, at 2:15 PM, the Vice President will meet with Earl Devaney, chairman of the Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board. This meeting is closed press.

The problem is when Biden speaks, he actually presents a reality of conditions. When this happens, it take Gibbs and Obama half the day to clarify/distort these realities.

The VP’s lunch schedule should also include the disclaimer that NO RED MEAT WILL BE SERVED.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of newly laid-off workers requesting unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week as jobs remain scarce amid a sluggish economic recovery.

The Labor Department said Thursday new claims for unemployment insurance rose by 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 444,000. Wall Street economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected an increase of only 3,000.

Transparency and accountability — now off limits to the press. That’s either the hallmark of this administration, an admission that Obama botched his VP pick, or a little of both.

I’d say it’s a LOT about both!

Joe is a schmoe, but give him credit. What are usually gaffes, are truths. Truths that the Obama admin don’t want uttered outside of secret meetings, and conversations. So give Joe credit for , even if bungling it a bit…saying what should be said, outloud.

Give Obama low marks, for being what he is. A corrupt, secretive, lying, hypocritical, country hating shrew.

VP Joe Biden seems like a clueless clown to me. I couldn’t believe his comments on how the U.S.A. supported Lebanon a few years ago and helped run Syrian forces out of that failed state. It never happened–and the AMERICAN PRAVDA media never mentioned this gaffe grande. Hizbollah rules that nest now–and will rocket Israeli civilian targets again soon.

As far as “transparency”–shine a light in Joe’s right ear and look for the beam coming out of his left ear. I don’t think that there is any “gray matter” in between them!
