Suffolk poll: Brown 50, Coakley 46
posted at 10:20 pm on January 14, 2010 by Allahpundit
Although Brown’s 4-point lead over Democrat Martha Coakley is within the Suffolk University/7News survey’s margin of error, the underdog’s position at the top of the results stunned even pollster David Paleologos.
“It’s a Brown-out,” said Paleologos, director of Suffolk’s Political Research Center. “It’s a massive change in the political landscape.”…
Paleologos said bellweather models show high numbers of independent voters turning out on election day, which benefits Brown, who has 65 percent of that bloc compared to Coakley’s 30 percent. Kennedy earns just 3 percent of the independent vote, and 1 percent are undecided…
Yet even in the bluest state, it appears Kennedy’s quest for universal health care has fallen out of favor, with 51 percent of voters saying they oppose the “national near-universal health-care package” and 61 percent saying they believe the government cannot afford to pay for it.
The difference in favorables is enormous. Coakley? 49/41. Brown? 57/19. Even worse for Coakley, 64 percent of voters think she’ll win — precisely the sort of complacency that has Dems terrified about turnout.
AP pessimism meter check: 1.0, down from 1.5 earlier today, indicating likely chances of a long night of ballot-counting that ends in razor-thin, tear-stained defeat.
Update: Just noticed upon re-reading that Suffolk has the same number of Dems crossing for Brown as PPP did last weekend — 17 percent, a shocking amount. Also shocking:
The poll surveyed a carefully partitioned electorate meant to match voter turnout: 39 percent Democrat, 15 percent Republican and 45 percent unenrolled.
The Democratic sample is +24 — and Scott Brown still leads?

Also, Brown won the debate, accd to this poll, by a 16 point margin
Against the backdrop of an election that could possibly play a decisive role in the health care debate—a point both parties have begun to press on their supporters—51 percent said they did not support the health care bill, with 36 percent supported it. Sixty-one percent said they didn’t believe the government could afford such a plan.
A plurality of respondents also believe Brown fared better during the televised debates between the candidates, with 41 percent saying they believed Brown won, compared to just 25 percent for Coakley.
The survey was conducted Jan. 11-13 and surveyed 500 registered voters, with a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

I’m SO ready for a win.

(btw, I asked my son who is antiestablishment and always votes against mine for the sake of creating chaos, to vote for Scott if he hasn’t given it much thought. He said he would just because of the ruckus it would cause if he wins. My other son is squarely in Scott’s corner. This is the first election we have all been on the same page even if for different reasons. This too gives me hope)

I don’t think they’ve gone purple permanently, and for the reasons I stated. It’s still a deep blue state.
Now, if he turns out to be a good Senator (and all indications so far are hopeful) and wins reelection (very important), he may be foot in the door we need to start electing more Republicans in MA.
JeffWeimer on January 15, 2010 at 12:45 AM
The fact that such a weak candidate as Kookley is polling so high means that half the state will still vote for absolutely anyone with a D after their name.

If Scott wins this thing, I think that will be all she wrote for Obama’s agenda for the foreseeable future. Cuz I don’t think he’ll just be the 41st “no” vote. I think there are a lot of Blue Dogs with a proverbial gun to their heads voting the party line when they know perfectly well it’s a suicide mission for them. I mean I think even those who have been bribed with all sorts of favors and goodies might suddenly find a conscience again with Scott there to give them cover. Once the dominoes start falling, it’s all over but the crying.
I don’t think it’s overstating things to say the future of this country rests with this one election. NY-23 was an important race, and it sent a message, laying the foundation for what’s to come this year, but the outcome wouldn’t have made a difference when the votes are taken. Nancy has a couple more putzes she can count on to vote her way. But this race is the lynch pin. I have no doubt the Chicago boys will stop at nothing to steal this thing. ACORN, SEIU, dead people, Black Panthers — all will be out in full force on Tuesday. Fortunately, tho, all eyes are on this race even more so than they were NY-23 (for several reasons) and we’re prepared for the shenanigans they’re going to try to pull. Scott is prepared for them; dude is a lawyer, he’s not to be messed with. Let them try that bullshyte out in the open where everyone is watching them and see if it’s so easy to get by with it.

For a while (okay, two minutes) I believed that blue dogs were really fiscally conservative until I witnessed the health care sausage fest.
What could Reid/Pelosi do to them (“proverbial gun to their heads”) that their feverishly angry constituents couldn’t do better (i.e. vote the spineless yellow dogs out of office)?

Brown doesn’t have to win in order for us to have a reason son to celebrate. But if he does pull it off, it will be icing on the cake.
OTOH, win lose or draw the Democrats will be sh!ttng bricks come Tues night.
ConservativeTony on January 15, 2010 at 1:05 AM
I assume it’s all about the money. Threatening to withhold money and support for their re-election bids, threatening to back other candidates in the primary. Promising in return lots of cash and goodies for their yes votes and convincing them that bringing home some pork will buy them some votes (and unfortunately this tactic has worked in the past).
Two of these Blue Dogs are mine. Compared with the spend-happy Northern liberals, they have been fairly fiscally conservative — until Obama and his thugs showed up. I think some of them would like an excuse to vote no. Not all of them, but some do — esp. those who are up for re-election this year. Lincoln is done in my book regardless but there are some people here who might be persuaded to change their minds if she voted no on this thing ultimately. I don’t think it would be enough to make a difference, but you never know: Stranger things have happened.
NoLeftTurn on January 15, 2010 at 1:10 AM
I want to believe, but who is going to be watching the voting precincts (armed Black Panthers), stuffed ballot boxes, lost ballots, “found” ballots, spoiled ballots that are counted, etc. Those thugs make me nervous. It happened in Minnesota.

Instant Karma gonna get you if Scott Brown won on Tuesday.
Ted pushed to get a bill through the Dem controlled State House in 2004 because he did not want to let Romney appoint a Republican to replace the soon to be President Kerry. Instead there has to be a special election. So if Brown wins the special election and becomes the 41st vote to stop Barry, Harry and Nanny running roughshod over the country and jamming the radical agenda down Americans throat, it would be sweet justice and unintended consequence for Dead Ted’s shameless manipulation of fundamental process.

“The word I hear most is ‘disgusted,’ ” said Fred DeFinis, 58, who has worked the phones for the past two weeks. Seven to eight of every 10 independents tell him that they will vote for Brown, he said, proportions similar to those seen in some public opinion surveys.
“It’s very hard for them to say what’s on their minds,” said DeFinis, a registered Democrat. He reads from a form asking whether they are most concerned about: (1) jobs and the economy; (2) the health-care bill; (3) illegal immigrants; or (4) national security. ” ‘All of the above’ is what we hear the most,” he said.

If the worst that the Democrat opposition research can come up with is that he owns a few very small investment properties, then he is fine for me. He is pro-choice, but given his opponents that is not a factor in this election. I used to live just outside his state senate district, so I didn’t follow him that closely, but I never heard anything bad about him.
I haven’t heard any great legislative accomplishments from him, but Republicans in Massachusetts have zero hope of getting anything passed of any interest.
Still the article might have mentioned his 30 years National Guard service as JAG rather than a picture that was once taken of him.

Massachusetts shocker: Brown Up 15% in Pajamas Media/CrossTarget Poll
A new poll conducted for Pajamas Media by CrossTarget – an Alexandria VA survey research firm – shows Scott Brown, a Republican, leading Martha Coakley, a Democrat, by 15.4% in Tuesday’s special election for the open Massachusetts US Senate seat. The poll of 946 likely voters was conducted by telephone using interactive voice technology (IVR) and has a margin of error of +/- 3.19%.
Anti-Harkonnen Freedom Fighter on January 15, 2010 at 2:23 AM
There’s a limit to how far the Dems can push the Blue Dogs in that direction. If they push too far, the Republicans could move in and persuade them that things would be better on the other side of the street.

You are right. Even Roger reiterated it. OMG! (I seldom say this, even in non-polite company) Tuesday can probably send a 10.7 political earthquake!
Chew on this, guys. I just did a little digging at The Political Graveyard for the chronology of U.S. Senators from MA in the 20th century. After doing a little back-counting, I noticed that this seat being contested has been in possession, not just of a Democrat, but of a Kennedy, since 1953. Nineteen fifty-three! NINETEEN FIFTY THREE!
After fifty-seven years, the “Kennedy Seat” will be no more. And the probable winner will be a Republican who has zero blood or ideological connection to that clan. Think about it: if Brown wins, the Kennedy hegemony shall be no more, after… how many, seventy, eighty years? A clan is dissolving into the rest of society before our very eyes, just as the Rockefeller descendants have since the eighties. And I’m probably sure that the Kennedys picked Coakley because they thought she would “keep the seat warm” while another member of the clan was to be groomed to take over it once again. And the best laid plans of mice and men…
Democrats better know how to administer CPR. They’re going to need it!
newton on January 15, 2010 at 3:05 AM
STOP..JINXING…THIS!
btw… does anyone here doubt that if CAROLINE KENNEDY had been selected here to run or propped up by the Dems back when they had primary season this would even be a race?
theoneandonlyfinn on January 15, 2010 at 3:07 AM
A complete blow-out like that would be amazing, but it is a big problem too because the Libertarians will drift back to Kennedy, and support may soften.
Massachusetts voters are fiscally conservative, except when they think they are going to get the money. So they vote for Democrats to bring home the bacon, but vote down tax increases. In this case they already have a health plan, and are in no mood to pay for Nebraska’s or Florida’s health plans.

Yeah, when she took a dump on Red Sox Nation, that cost her almost as many votes as her coddling of that child molesting priest.
Bruce in NH on January 14, 2010 at 10:46 PM
Even though I am a Catholic and normally get very irritated when people mention these child molester priests, in this case it is an exception. The fact is the guy was guilty and he was caught, she let him off with plea bargaining, and he was free to do it again. So yes…. she does not get a pass.
However, do not forget her record in other cases – the child care case where her boss was responsible for putting innocent people in prison, but she comes into the case because when the parole board sought clemency from the outgoing governor, it was Coakley who fought against it, despite the overwhelming evidence of his innocence. Then there is the Louise Woodward case, the English nanny who was charged with the murder of a baby with what was alleged to be shaken baby syndrome, except that she was innocent of any wrong-doing. The baby had an old head injury. The mother has never told the full story about what happened to the baby before Louise came along as a nanny. Then there is the case where she refused to charge a man over his rape of his 2 year old niece with a curling iron….. This one is more serious than the child molestation case against the priest. All of them add up to a really bad record.
maggieo on January 15, 2010 at 3:45 AM
s this really happening?
I’ve been conditioned for too long to believe that this can be true, so I’m just going to choose an Allah-esque attitude of pessimism and assume that this is still bad news, just an example of Brown peaking early, with it all downhill from here.
Vyce on January 14, 2010 at 10:52 PM

Secretary of State Bill Galvin, who is really a good egg, was on TV last night explaining the law and his responsibilities about certifying elections.
He’s right, of course.
But the Democrats have succeeded in fouling their own nest with their blatant, naked posturing to manipulate the passing of Kennedy such that no Republican could possibly have a fair shot of winning and that no harm would come to the Democrat machine in Washington, most especially to das Obamafuhrer himself.
Niki Tsongas was given her ticket right away when she won her special election.
Should Brown win, he should be accorded the same courtesy.

Nice “HIT” piece on Brown on the the Today Show
NBC never fails to disappoint. It is on par with HuffPos “shocking” hit piece yesterday.
Ed/AP – you need to find this clip and show it.

From here in New Hampshire, if Brown wins this thing it will energize conservatives all over New England. New Hampshire was a rock-ribbed conservative bastion until about 10-15 years ago when a flood of MA citizens infiltrated NH in an attempt to flee high taxes and growing regulations.
Please, give $$$ to the Brown campaign and pray that the union goons and DemoncRAT machine doesn’t steal another election a la Minnesota.

I’m trying not to get too excited about the polls…they have been wrong before. But, we are very excited about the response Scott has gotten from folks here in MA as well as from all over the country. I’m beginning to feel like we have a real possibility of making a breakthrough right here in the land of the first Tea Party. We had the pleasure of meeting Scott at a GOP fundraiser here in our town last summer where he announced his candidacy, and we immediately signed the petition to get his name on the ballot. When I shook his hand and thanked him for running, he said, “My wife thinks I’m crazy.” He’s a down-to-earth regular guy…we need more of his type in DC to be sure. GO, SCOTT,GO!! If you are able, please send money to his campaign so we can keep the momentum going.
