Quotes of the day

posted at 10:51 pm on January 14, 2010 by Allahpundit

“In October 2005, a Somerville police officer living in Melrose raped his 23-month-old niece with a hot object, most likely a curling iron.

“Keith Winfield, then 31, told police he was alone with the toddler that day and made additional statements that would ultimately be used to convict him.

“But in the aftermath of the crime, a Middlesex County grand jury overseen by Martha Coakley, then the district attorney, investigated without taking action. It was only after the toddler’s mother filed applications for criminal complaints that Coakley won grand jury indictments charging rape and assault and battery.

“Even then, nearly 10 months after the crime, Coakley’s office recommended that Winfield be released on personal recognizance, with no cash bail. He remained free until December 2007, when Coakley’s successor as district attorney won a conviction and two life terms.”

Ken Pittman: Right, if you are a Catholic, and believe what the Pope teaches that any form of birth control is a sin. ah you don’t want to do that.

Martha Coakley: No we have a separation of church and state Ken, let’s be clear.

Ken Pittman: In the emergency room you still have your religious freedom.

Martha Coakley: (…stammering) The law says that people are allowed to have that. You can have religious freedom but you probably shouldn’t work in the emergency room.

I’m now convinced she’s purposely throwing this race so Obama can say her loss was because she was a really REALLY bad candidate, and that this in no way reflects on the nation’s view of Obamacare.

Let’s not forget that this woman is cool with keeping innocent people behind bars if it will further her political career.

Honestly, how could an informed person vote for someone like this?

A new poll in Boston:

“It’s a Brown-out,” said Paleologos, director of Suffolk’s Political Research Center. “It’s a massive change in the political landscape.”

The poll shows Brown, a state senator from Wrentham, besting Coakley, the state’s attorney general, by 50 percent to 46 percent, the first major survey to show Brown in the lead. Unenrolled long-shot Joseph L. Kennedy, an information technology executive with no relation to the famous family, gets 3 percent of the vote. Only 1 percent of voters were undecided.

Even if you’re a Democrat, somewhere deep down you know that Martha Coakley wasn’t what your party needed at this stage in the political cycle – a grim hack career pol embarrassingly stupid and inarticulate on matters domestic (if you’re religious, don’t work in an emergency room) and foreign (my sister can see the Middle East from her house) who reacts to awkward questions by complaining the press is stalking her and standing by as aides send them crashing to the sidewalk, and whose entire campaign has no rationale other than hereditary entitlement.

At this point, I am starting to think Scott Brown needs to start running like a front-runner. He probably only needs to avoid a mega-gaffe in order to win this thing, since Coakley seems to have taken lessons on off-the-cuff remarks from Joe Biden.

I am REALLY glad that this woman is being MORALLY exposed in this race. It is past time that we return to some sane moral basis in this nation. For too long political machines have divorced character and morals from public policy, and a dumbed-down population has acquiesced. If we can turn that trend around, we can restore the foundations of this nation. That is my prayer.

paul1149 on January 14, 2010 at 11:06 PM

She’s truely an awful candidate.

Brown has had an amazing run of fortune for this race. He’s running against a complacent incompetant who never ran a campaign before, during a time when voter anger at Democrat overreach is at a high while the economy is in the toilet and the Democratic governor unpopular. All these things, plus the fact that Brown is a charismatic candidate who is running a good campaign, have put him within striking distance in Massachusetts.

Oohh that last comment pis$ed me off! Ok, no last rites for me, if I get them at the hospital. No TV on with the Catholic chapel that’s located inside the hospital, with two masses per week, where some employees pray and get the Body of Christ through the Holy Eucharist.

No prayers for recovery for family and friends, no matter what religion. Will tell Mr. PPF to not say anything religious, remotely, in the OR in case all hell (pun intended) breaks loose, either with the patient or his equipment.

Will advise my family to not pray for me next time I go in (I have a Bart Simpson-file type at the hospital). Keep blabbing Coakley, Twitter, Facebook and blogs are gonna bring you down!

BTW this is the prayer that’s given at the chapel, in case you want to use it:

A PRAYER FOR HEALING

LOVING GOD,
YOU INVITE ALL WHO ARE BURDENED TO COME TO YOU.
ALLOW YOUR HEALING HAND TO COME UPON ALL.
TOUCH SOULS WITH YOUR COMPASSION.
TOUCH HEARTS WITH YOUR COURAGE.
TOUCH MINDS WITH YOUR WISDOM.
TOUCH BODIES WITH YOUR LOVE.
TEACH US TO TRUST YOU FOR OUR DAILY BREAD.
EMBRACE US AND THOSE FOR WHOM WE PRAY THIS DAY.
WE ASK ALL BLESSINGS THROUGH CHRIST OUR LORD.
AMEN.

Indeed. Change only a few of those factors and Coakley would have won this race in a walk, IMO. Thankfully, they broke in Brown’s favor instead.

……and nObama won on merit?

Depends on how you classify merit. Personally, I believe Obama has been an utter failure as a policymaker and as a statesman, but he was an excellent campaigner. In the rubric of today’s politics, being an excellent campaigner may be the only merit needed to be elected to the highest office.

New poll: Brown up by four

A Suffolk University poll released Thursday evening shows Republican Scott Brown four points ahead of Democrat Martha Coakley as he continues his improbable surge in the Massachusetts Senate special election.

The poll reports Brown is leading Coakley, 50 to 46 percent, just within the margin of error. Independent candidate Joe Kennedy received 3 percent.

Suffolk pollster David Paleologos told the Boston Herald even he was surprised by the poll’s results, noting that their models show a likely high turnout of independent voters next Tuesday, which is likely to benefit Brown. The results also showed Brown leading in all the state’s regions except Suffolk County.

Brown’s favorability ratings are also higher than Coakley’s, with 57 percent saying they have a favorable opinion of the state senator and just 19 percent having an unfavorable opinion. Forty-nine percent say they have a favorable opinion of Coakley, while 41 percent have an unfavorable opinion of the attorney general.

Against the backdrop of an election that could possibly play a decisive role in the health care debate—a point both parties have begun to press on their supporters—51 percent said they did not support the health care bill, with 36 percent supported it. Sixty-one percent said they didn’t believe the government could afford such a plan.

A plurality of respondents also believe Brown fared better during the televised debates between the candidates, with 41 percent saying they believed Brown won, compared to just 25 percent for Coakley.

The survey was conducted Jan. 11-13 and surveyed 500 registered voters, with a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

Honestly, how could an informed person vote for someone like this?

BadgerHawk on January 14, 2010 at 10:56 PM

Sadly there are many ill-informed and just plain stupid people that vote and nothing can be done to change it.

Not so long ago, I was at a utility company for business — employee who’d assisted me began to engage in some small talk after the business was concluded and was going on as to how she favored John Edwards for the Presidency.

I asked her how, why, remaining polite in doing so. Woman “just (thought) he was someone (she) would like to see elected.” That was the extent of her understanding of who Edwards was and why she “liked” him.

Never underestimate the extent to which many people are not only badly informed but who are literally uninformed, and, base their voting decisions on visual observations and some sort of emotional fascination with someone else’s image and imagery.

It ain’t over till the last vote is counted, and then considering all that ACORN and SEIU have done recently it still ain’t over at that point…..(needless to say, I’m not about to trust the democRATS!)
