Poll: Majority would vote against Obama re-election
posted at 10:12 am on January 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Democrats can’t blame this one on Rasmussen. The National Journal polled 1200 adults nationwide to determine whether they would vote for Barack Obama’s re-election based on his first-year performance. In a stunner, 50% said they’d vote for “someone else,” while only 23% said they would definitely vote for Obama:
A year into his tenure, a majority of Americans would already vote against Pres. Obama if the ’12 elections were held today, according to a new survey.
The Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor poll shows 50% say they would probably or definitely vote for someone else. Fully 37% say they would definitely cast a ballot against Obama. Meanwhile, just 39% would vote to re-elect the pres. to a 2nd term, and only 23% say they definitely would do so. …
But as GOPers focus on taxes and spending, that message seems to be causing Obama the most harm. Among those who believe Obama’s policies have moved the country in the wrong direction, 45% cite spending and government regulation as a top cause for their opposition.
These results are doubly bad. Obviously, having half the country say they’d vote for a generic opponent isn’t good, but the sample type is the most Democrat-friendly a pollster can use. “Adults” generate more left-leaning results than registered voters, and especially with likely voters. If Obama can’t do better than 39% among adults, he is in deep trouble — and so are Democrats running in this year’s midterms.
The sample itself seems rather reasonable. The partisan split is in the ballpark, with Democrats and independents a +5 over the GOP. Twelve percent called themselves a “something else,” which seems rather high for the fringe parties even in the aggregate. Eighteen percent of the respondents didn’t vote in the 2008 presidential campaign, and 4% said they voted for someone other than Obama or John McCain, which again seems a little high. The two main-party candidates got 98% of the total popular vote in November 2008. The difference could be people who don’t want to acknowledge their Obama vote rather than a sampling problem, however.
On health care, Obama lost ground in the last four months. Nat’l Journal had net support in September at almost-majority level, 49/42. Opposition has now moved ahead, 44/46. Strong opposition and support were in a virtual dead heat in September, but 35% have strong opposition now to ObamaCare, while only 22% strongly support it.
The poll has another big red flag for Democrats. After a year of single-party governance, Americans have grown very disenchanted. In April of last year, 47% of respondents thought the country was moving in the right direction, against 42% who thought it was going off the rails. Now, 55% think the country is moving in the wrong direction, and only 34% think otherwise. Since only Democrats have been doing the driving, that gives a strong indication that they may find themselves replaced at the wheel at the next opportunity.

The Democratic spin for this will be the definition of “adults”. They will claim that “adults” in this sample think that the government should live within its means and not overly tax Americans thus distorts the results. Which, the response would be “touché”.

At the rate he’s going, a hamburger will beat Obama in the next election.
What’s hilarious is to hear all the leftist pundits citing Ronald Reagan’s similar approval ratings at this stage of his Presidency. When libs are so desperate to salvage Obama’s rep that they’re comparing him to a President they despised, you know the guy is screwed.

Never fear – the third/Tea party will ride in to split the Republican vote and help usher the Dems back into office.
Appearing soon in “Third Party – The Sequel”; Barack Obama reprises the role of Bill Clinton, winning an election with well less than 50% of of the vote because two ‘conservatives’ split the majority.
Who will reprise the role of Ross Perot, I wonder?

That undeserved Nobel Peace Prize has proven a large millstone around Obama’s neck. I believe that was the moment when he jumped the shark to a majority of Americans. They realized that he really wants to be President of the World and doesn’t care at all about America. The tone-deaf trip to Copenhagen right in the middle of a cold wave, the narcissistic attempt to get the Olympics for Chicago, the stupid appearances on late-night comedy shows — it all adds up to people that this guy is just not serious about anything except proving that he is popular around the world and with American elites.
His behavior in the last few weeks has confirmed it. You can tell he is really animated by the earthquake in Haiti. (And don’t get me wrong, that’s a good thing, even if it is for the wrong reasons.) But another 2 million unemployed Americans? Not so much.
rockmom on January 14, 2010 at 10:24 AM

They have two years to rig the system, rewrite the rules, engineer a short term economic bump, get the media on their latest narrative, just in time to get Obama reelected.
modifiedcontent on January 14, 2010 at 10:24 AM
That’s a pretty big sample size. Makes me optimistic.
And I know this fool and his Chicago machine won’t be able to turn things around. They spent a lifetime getting their way by twisting arms and threatening people. There’s no way that in 3 years they’ll be able to do things right and win the hearts of enough of the American people to get re-elected.

Let’s not get carried away here. 39% would vote to re-elect, 37% would not — that’s still a win for Obama. And that still doesn’t account for a percentage of the “would vote for someone else” category that is probably wishing Obama would move Left. I still think this is shaping up like 1994; GOP gains in the House and Senate kill Obama’s programs and he become likable enough to remain in office in 2012. The Palin/Perot thing probably won’t help either.
LastRick on January 14, 2010 at 10:29 AM
Well, that’s great to see people are growing up a bit but I’ll be more hopeful if they still feel that way in about 2 years. Politicians count on the voter’s short term memory.

I wish he would just admit that he has not idea how to turn around the economy…that this is a horrible, horrible time to try to pass health care legislation…that Pelosi and Reid are probably the worst thing that has ever happened to America, that the stimulus package has not created the jobs he promised, that throwing good money after bad is always a bad idea, and that his has turned out to be the most divisive and opaque administration ever. Other than that, he’s done a few good things militarily.
scalleywag on January 14, 2010 at 10:32 AM
And that sample is adults. Imagine what Rasmussen would come up with.
As for the Chicago thug politics, it’s who they are. I’ll never understand what the hell the public was thinking putting people like that in the Oval Office. But in fairness, most folks don’t live in Illinois and didn’t realize how nasty and low those politicians are. But now with Blago, the domestic transfer of Gitmo detainees, and Obama himself, voters will have no excuse for such ignorance in 2012.

The only thing to remember is this…you can only beat Obama on the issues…no one will beat him in a personal race.
We have all been beaten and abused by the racism agenda, so any personal attack will not work…he is inexperienced, he doesn’t understand economics, he surrounded himself with poor cabinet positions, he had to pay back his base, etc., but never that he doesn’t have character or he is not up to a “standard”.
He is a “great” guy, but his economic policies are weak….He is a “wonderful” man, but his health care hurts the nation….He is a “caring” individual, but his foreign policy has not helped…He is an “intelligent” man, but he spent too much time on appeasing his base, which is out of touch with America”…

He has some good military advisers, his SOS isn’t all that I thought she could be, but his economic team doesn’t know what they’re doing, obviously. And the country is paying for it so he needs to do something about that, and fast.

Such as? He dithered for months over Afghanistan. His DHS Secretary declared returning war vets a potential source of terrorism. He thought more of doing shout outs than even recognizing the Ft. Hood victims. He’s chomping at the bit to repeal DADT.

It’s always The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. Look how after trying to slip the healthcare bill under the door, then cram it down the public’s throat, locking the Republican minority out of all discussions, President Obama is now calling Republican House members to the Oval Office. He has called President Bush — who is responsible for every single one of Barry’s failures — to help in the relief effort in Haiti. I don’t recall him ever acknowledging the humanitarian work Bush did in Africa, or how 41 helped out in New Orleans after Katrina.
But we need to appear reasonable and “moderate” now! Tiny Dancer might even get tossed under the bus.

What we should be focusing on at this time isn’t another poll showing Obama tanking. We’ve seen that time and again. We get it. Most Americans have either got it or are sobering up to it.
What we should be focusing on is complacency. Will those who don’t support Obama in 2010, remain firmly against him in 2012? How can we make sure this isn’t a notorious case of premature rejection?
We cannot rely on the stupid mistakes of Democrats to keep their poll numbers low. We have to establish a platform of ideas soon and begin selling those to the 50%+ who are now awakened to this administration’s obvious shortcomings.
