Poll: Majority would vote against Obama re-election

posted at 10:12 am on January 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Democrats can’t blame this one on Rasmussen.  The National Journal polled 1200 adults nationwide to determine whether they would vote for Barack Obama’s re-election based on his first-year performance.  In a stunner, 50% said they’d vote for “someone else,” while only 23% said they would definitely vote for Obama:

A year into his tenure, a majority of Americans would already vote against Pres. Obama if the ’12 elections were held today, according to a new survey.

The Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor poll shows 50% say they would probably or definitely vote for someone else. Fully 37% say they would definitely cast a ballot against Obama. Meanwhile, just 39% would vote to re-elect the pres. to a 2nd term, and only 23% say they definitely would do so. …

But as GOPers focus on taxes and spending, that message seems to be causing Obama the most harm. Among those who believe Obama’s policies have moved the country in the wrong direction, 45% cite spending and government regulation as a top cause for their opposition.

These results are doubly bad.  Obviously, having half the country say they’d vote for a generic opponent isn’t good, but the sample type is the most Democrat-friendly a pollster can use.  “Adults” generate more left-leaning results than registered voters, and especially with likely voters.  If Obama can’t do better than 39% among adults, he is in deep trouble — and so are Democrats running in this year’s midterms.

The sample itself seems rather reasonable.  The partisan split is in the ballpark, with Democrats and independents a +5 over the GOP.  Twelve percent called themselves a “something else,” which seems rather high for the fringe parties even in the aggregate.  Eighteen percent of the respondents didn’t vote in the 2008 presidential campaign, and 4% said they voted for someone other than Obama or John McCain, which again seems a little high.   The two main-party candidates got 98% of the total popular vote in November 2008.  The difference could be people who don’t want to acknowledge their Obama vote rather than a sampling problem, however.

On health care, Obama lost ground in the last four months.  Nat’l Journal had net support in September at almost-majority level, 49/42.  Opposition has now moved ahead, 44/46.  Strong opposition and support were in a virtual dead heat in September, but 35% have strong opposition now to ObamaCare, while only 22% strongly support it.

The poll has another big red flag for Democrats.  After a year of single-party governance, Americans have grown very disenchanted.  In April of last year, 47% of respondents thought the country was moving in the right direction, against 42% who thought it was going off the rails.  Now, 55% think the country is moving in the wrong direction, and only 34% think otherwise.  Since only Democrats have been doing the driving, that gives a strong indication that they may find themselves replaced at the wheel at the next opportunity.

I like to live by the addage….God doesn’t give us anything, we can’t handle. However, it is regrettable that we have to put our country, and her citizens thru this…because some people voted for this schmuck. However, I am grateful that some are coming to see the light. I just wished they’d seen it sooner.

Reagan challened Ford in 1976. Buchanan challenged Bush I in 1992. And of course the swimmer challenged Jimmuh Carter.

And all 3 of those examples went on to lose the primaries and the sitting president in all 3 examples lost the election. Makes sense, if your own party isn’t fully behind you, chances are the country as a whole won’t be either.

Actually, I thought that also…look at the math.
14% will never ever not vote for him, this is the group that voted for a coke sniffing prostitute grabbing mayor, they listen to Sharpton as if he actually makes sense…then you have another 10% that are just nuts, they vote for anything or anyone (both sides have those goof balls, like Paul supporters), then you have another 5-10% of white guilt voters that will vote for anything that is not white, male, etc.
You would think, mathematically, it would never get below 25-30%…yet, here we are.
A really huge shift….

Has it stopped piracy? No. But I think it was the right message to send. I didn’t say he did a LOT of things right militarily, but a few. And I give him that, even thought it’s probably mostly because he has good advisers. He needs to clean house in finance and maybe he’ll do better there. Obama isn’t merely unready but totally unfit. The reasons for the public to turn against him are too numerous to mention, but among his many defects is the huge gap between his self-regard and his competence.

That’s exactly the sort of thing that needs to happen nationwide. Those who vote for Progressives need to feel the consequences of their decisions from all angles. It’s the only way the country will turn to freedom. Politicians are mostly bullet proof; most have little reason these days to care if they lose their jobs. And, anyway, simply shifting the ratio of Ds to Rs in D.C. is not going to fix things in any semi-permanent, wide-scale way.

It’s time for a massive cultural shift. All Progressive ideas – and those who support them – need to be stuffed into the little box where they belong, afraid to come out again for another century.

JDPerren on January 14, 2010 at 3:30 PM

I’ve lately noticed an uptick of lefties making fun of people who voted for Bush twice on non-political forums. I think it’s the same effect, it died down when they were in charge and all was right, now they need to remind themselves over and over how in their minds they didn’t screw up.

Sad thing for them, I think we’re getting very close to the point where most Americans are going to be far more favorable to someone who voted for Bush twice than someone who voted for Obama once.

Actually, the SEALS on-site did that without him giving the OK.

Majority would vote against Obama re-election

Can’t blame people for that, when he does stuff and then whines:
Obama to Banks: ‘We Want Our Money Back’

Well you shouldn’t have given it to them in the first place dmy.

It’s a little late for that.

Its the economy stupid

Obama can take full credit for emptying the Treasury, borrowing every last dollar to payoff his cronies, using the Treasury to buy its own T notes as a way to print more money when we couldnt borrow any more, and now passing a bunch of taxes on banks, to get them to keep lending, on wheelchairs and blue cross policies, to pay for health insurance, and cutting spending on Medicare to pay for other people’s healthcare

and he tops it off with a tax for abortion, and money for doctors if they agree to counsel patients on end of life decisions, as if they did not already talk to patients about possibilities

Obama is now down to openly buying off groups by exempting them from tax obligations in return for support, so the unions, the once proud state of Nebraska, and the sovereign politicians of Louisiana were given exemptions for their obedience

When folk are going broke, crooks beware
