Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama gave himself a “good, solid B-plus” for his first year in office, but the rest of the country gave him a big, red F — in a CNN poll, of all places.  Obama has an explanation for the tough grading system that negated his self-delivered grade inflation, of course.  The economy was much worse than he could have imagined, he tells ABC News:

Nearly one year after his inauguration, President Obama admits that Americans have every right to feel deflated at the progress made in his first year in office.

“They have every right to feel deflated because the economy was far worse than any of us expected,’” the president tells People magazine in an interview, “The day I was sworn in, we now know that we were in the process of losing 650,000 jobs in December and 700,000 jobs in January, another 650,000 in March. So people rightly have been anxious this year.”

Uh, where to begin with this?  First, the reason Obama gets a big fail isn’t because the economy was bad when he took office; it’s because he hasn’t done anything to improve it.  Jobs have disappeared at a steady clip all year long despite passing a stimulus bill that he and his economic advisers assured Americans would halt the upward surge of unemployment at 8%.  Now we’re at 10%, and the only reason it’s that low is because workers have fled the system in record numbers.

Next, we knew damned well we were in the middle of losing that many jobs in January, February, and March.  We lost 766,000 jobs in May 2008, 614,000 jobs in August, another 603,000 in October, and almost 800,000 in December. In fact, by the time of the election, we had already shed 2.737 million jobs, and in November and December we would lose another 1.228 million on top of those.

Furthermore, Obama supposedly had his economic team putting together their plan during those two months, when he promised to “hit the ground running” despite his total lack of executive experience.  With total job losses at the time at almost 4 million jobs the previous year, Christina Romer published her infamous projections of employment in early January that warned that unemployment could go as high as 9% if Congress didn’t give Obama a trillion-dollar stimulus package.

The only way Obama could possibly have been that ignorant of the economic position would have been to lock himself in a box for six months.  Even now, a year after taking office, Obama still wants to shift blame onto Bush for a lost year in which Obama did everything he could to stall real growth and economic recovery.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

We keep hearing about the \”Bush economy\” in relation to his last two years in office. I\’m waiting for the Republican advertisement confirming that in 2006, when we had Republican majorities in the House and Senate, as well as the President, the jobless rate was 5%. After the democrats took the House and Senate in 2006, and then the Presidency in 2008, the jobless rate has risen to 10+%…

This would be funny if it wasn’t so scary. The guy tries to demonstrate empathy for Average Americans. The problem is that he does not hold their value system and the understanding of it is foreign to him. Also, as a narcissist, he knows it can’t be his fault and therefore will not accept any responsibily for his failed economic policies, including the Stimulus. His narcissism is the reason for the fictional 2 million jobs saved or created number. He can not admit the extent of his failure.

Doughboy on January 14, 2010 at 8:43 AM

Obama was elected President because:
(a) he was not George Bush,
(b) he promised any and everything – hope and change, all will get better with him as President (from racism to foreign relations), he will fix all problems, bring the world together, lower the rising oceans even.

Unfortunately, Obama lacks the experience and wisdom to fix any problems.
Kind of like putting in a new Captain on a ship and then finding the ship is sinking because there is a hole on the right side.
What does Obama do to fix the ship that is sinking with a hole in its side?
Patch the hole?
Nope – he punches a hole on the left side of the side of the ship because he thinks knows the water coming in from the right side will empty out of the ship that way. Net result, the Obama way makes the ship sink faster.

Obama would probably be a good choice for President if everything was going great in the world: growing economies, no unemployment, no conflicts, everyone in peace and harmony. But in a world filled with serious problems Obama is the wrong choice. (Would McCain have been worse?)

These three concepts do not exist in the White House. The antitheticals to these concepts run the hallways up there—lies, emotion and fallacy run amok under the ghosts of Lincoln, Reagan and even Teddy Roosevelt.

“Prepare Three Envelopes”

A fellow had just been hired as the new CEO of a large high tech corporation. The CEO who was stepping down met with him privately and presented him with three numbered envelopes. “Open these if you run up against a problem you don’t think you can solve,” he said.

Well, things went along pretty smoothly, but six months later, sales took a downturn and he was really catching a lot of heat. About at his wit’s end, he remembered the envelopes. He went to his drawer and took out the first envelope. The message read, “Blame your predecessor.”

The new CEO called a press conference and tactfully laid the blame at the feet of the previous CEO. Satisfied with his comments, the press — and Wall Street – responded positively, sales began to pick up and the problem was soon behind him.

About a year later, the company was again experiencing a slight dip in sales, combined with serious product problems. Having learned from his previous experience, the CEO quickly opened the second envelope. The message read, “Reorganize.” This he did, and the company quickly rebounded.

After several consecutive profitable quarters, the company once again fell on difficult times. The CEO went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope.

The message said, “Prepare three envelopes.”</blockquote>

Obama is governing on the three envelopes approach. When they finally lay Bush to rest, the reorganization will begin. Mark my words.

Companies will not hire when they are about to get taxed out of business.

The GDP numbers Bozo’s crew put out are all fake as well. The GDP figures are pumped up full of government spending, not real growth at all. His incompetence and ideology have driven the country into the second great depression.

His real problem isn’t that he inherited a bad economy or that he failed to improve it, it’s that he’s standing on our backs to keep us down and make it worse. Meehan-McCormack is a nice visual.

What employer in its right mind would do anything but hold back on hiring, with all of the uncertainty over the coming federal imperatives? The only bullish investors are the Soroses of the world, those for whom financial rape and pillage is sport.

I firmly think a big reason why this administration has been a failure when it comes to the economy is that they don’t have a single person in charge that ever had to make a buck. They are all former politicians, academics, or others that only know the theory on how to spend other people’s money. Perhaps we should require that any potential Presidential appointee has to run a fast food outlet for six months and show a profit before they can be considered for the position.

Think about it. Running a fast food outlet would force these people to work with the common folk, it would force them into understanding profit and taxes. It would force them to realize just how needlessly intrusive government can be. If we held this standard, my guess is that Obama wouldn’t have lasted a week.

If Bush is so bad, then why is it now reported Obama asked him to help with humanitarian aid to Haiti? Somebody’s speaking with a forked tongue…

Ref: my last: I know why! If there’s criticism of our effort in Haiti, O can blame Bush! Now I got it!

The reason Obama go elected was because of the economy, of course it was failing….he ran on that, and the promise that he was going to turn it around…luckily for him, unemployment never has been over the 8.4% he promised he would not exceed….what an idiot.
He complains about what gave him victory….what a whiner….

Now the number one reason Americans are turning on Barry is his inability to take responsibility.

Number one flaw.

People realize that a person who want take responsibility is incapable of detecting problems, much less fixing them. Everyone knows you have to know the problem before you can fix it.

Right now America’s number one problem is Barrack Obama. The voters are about to take responsibility for that and cut off his access to the People’s House.

Yep. The quake is a leftover from Katrina. And Katrina was concocted by a diabolical scientist hired by Bush. I know

Ima let you finish, but George Bush hate black people, and Haiti full of black people.

You don’t get it. Obama switched over to Negro dialect, which is why you racists and economic neanderthals don’t comprehend his Wiley E. Coyote Supergeniusness.

Western_Civ on January 14, 2010 at 10:32 AM

America hired a part-time community organizer as their leader. Is this really a surprise?

Trusser13 on January 14, 2010 at 10:35 AM

The 0ne: Not only was it Bush’s fault, it was more Bush’s fault than I ever could have guessed.

Idiot.

O’s excuse is almost a word-for-word take off of Clinton’s in ’92 when he justified the tax hikes. Those Bushes are amazing. They can hide an entire economies from their Dim successors. Quite an achievement for the combination Evil Genious/Morons they are considered to be by those same successors.

Hucklebuck on January 14, 2010 at 10:56 AM

Everything is Bush’s fault…he’s even responsible for the earthquake!

becki51758 on January 14, 2010 at 8:11 AM

That must be why Obama recruited G.W. Bush to help raise funds for the relief effort. To clean up his own mess…
