Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on January 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama gave himself a “good, solid B-plus” for his first year in office, but the rest of the country gave him a big, red F — in a CNN poll, of all places. Obama has an explanation for the tough grading system that negated his self-delivered grade inflation, of course. The economy was much worse than he could have imagined, he tells ABC News:
Nearly one year after his inauguration, President Obama admits that Americans have every right to feel deflated at the progress made in his first year in office.
“They have every right to feel deflated because the economy was far worse than any of us expected,’” the president tells People magazine in an interview, “The day I was sworn in, we now know that we were in the process of losing 650,000 jobs in December and 700,000 jobs in January, another 650,000 in March. So people rightly have been anxious this year.”
Uh, where to begin with this? First, the reason Obama gets a big fail isn’t because the economy was bad when he took office; it’s because he hasn’t done anything to improve it. Jobs have disappeared at a steady clip all year long despite passing a stimulus bill that he and his economic advisers assured Americans would halt the upward surge of unemployment at 8%. Now we’re at 10%, and the only reason it’s that low is because workers have fled the system in record numbers.
Next, we knew damned well we were in the middle of losing that many jobs in January, February, and March. We lost 766,000 jobs in May 2008, 614,000 jobs in August, another 603,000 in October, and almost 800,000 in December. In fact, by the time of the election, we had already shed 2.737 million jobs, and in November and December we would lose another 1.228 million on top of those.
Furthermore, Obama supposedly had his economic team putting together their plan during those two months, when he promised to “hit the ground running” despite his total lack of executive experience. With total job losses at the time at almost 4 million jobs the previous year, Christina Romer published her infamous projections of employment in early January that warned that unemployment could go as high as 9% if Congress didn’t give Obama a trillion-dollar stimulus package.
The only way Obama could possibly have been that ignorant of the economic position would have been to lock himself in a box for six months. Even now, a year after taking office, Obama still wants to shift blame onto Bush for a lost year in which Obama did everything he could to stall real growth and economic recovery.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I remember during the campaigns of last year, the country felt safer with McCain, had a terrorist act been perpetrated on us again…and some felt Obama was better capable of handling the economic crisis. Obama himself, and his supporters touted it, even when some of us had our doubts, because of the few years experience he’d had even in politics, and little else to prove he was capable. Now..here we are, a year later. Things are markedly worse, we’ve had 3 attempts, a few successful by terrorists, and a worsening economy. Yet we still hear the Bush is to blame mantra.
If Obama were even a fraction of the man he portends to be….at least I might be able to muster up some respect for him. As it is though….he’s nothing but your average run of the mill politicians, with an ego so large, there isn’t room for anyone, or anything else in his world.

Wasn’t this the the same justification Clinton made in 1992/1993 to raise taxes? That the economy was way worse off than anyone expected…

I am with you up to the “The problem is…” part.
The problem is he and his gang have no solutions. Every thing in the world to them is to be solved by (1) increase the government and (2) bleed the ‘rich’.
He has all the best intentions, and the rest of us should just trust them, our elected betters.

If we could only lower the standards for being president then I bet Obama would be getting an A++++. Just was done for him during his entire academic career and community organizer work.
Bottom line: Obama is failing because of whitey.

Hopefully we will be able to recover from this. This economy is stronger than Obama. Does anyone deny that this is purposeful? Obama is trying to kill the economy before anyone notices. Sorry Bammy, we are noticing and we won’t stand for it!

I’ve noticed it. It’s all in the plan. He wants to eventually socialize EVERYTHING, and EVERYONE!!! I think it’s criminal, and I can’t for the life of me understand why there isn’t one blooming thing we can do about it, until the next elections.

It’s time to REDISTRIBUTE some Congressional seats and next, the Presidency.

“locking him in a box for six months” sounds like an elegant solution!

Obama’s self imposed grade of a solid B+ is highly curved.
He must be used to receiving grades he never earned.
Not only have affirmative action policies given people like this a sense of entitlement, but his & the generations behind it in this country have been inundated with all of this self love nonsense.
Like kids getting certificates & ribbons of completion, etc.
Seriously-you’re either a winner or a loser in some situations.
As POTUS you are either a winner or a loser.
Obama is a solid loser.

Both Obama and Biden were in the US Senate, meaning Congress.
Congress controls the countries money, how much it takes in and how much it spends.
The Congress has been in complete control of the Dems since 2006.
It is not possible for any member of Congress not to know the state of the countries economy, that’s their frigging job!
That is their primary job!
Next, Obama inherited this? Que?
He “ inherited” what he help create!
Either by his action’s or inaction’s, he help create the mess were in.
