Earthquake in Haiti leaves tens of thousands dead

posted at 1:24 pm on January 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The earthquake that hit Haiti may wind up surpassing the number of people killed in the tsunamis of 2004. Initial estimates run from the “thousands” (news media, being cautious) to 100,000 (Le Monde), to as many as a half-million people (the Haiti government). Tweets from locals say there are no hospitals left in Port-au-Prince, and the local jail collapsed entirely. One of the poorest nations on the planet has been utterly devastated:

Haitians are piling bodies along the devastated streets of their capital after a powerful earthquake flattened the president’s palace and the main prison, the cathedral, hospitals, schools and thousands of homes. Untold numbers are still trapped.

President Rene Preval says he believes thousands of people are dead even as other officials give much higher estimates — though they were based on the extent of the destruction rather than firm counts of the dead.

His prime minister, Jean-Max Bellerive, tells CNN: “I believe we are well over 100,000,” while leading senator Youri Latortue tells The Associated Press that 500,000 could be dead. Both admit they have no way of knowing.

Fausta, always a go-to resource for Western Hemisphere news, has the following videos showing the destruction:

The American Red Cross has responded:

6:20 pm The American Red Cross is pledging an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by this earthquake, and is prepared to take further action as local responders assess the situation. As with most earthquakes, we expect to see immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.

12:30am (1/13/2010) You can text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti.

Barack Obama signaled US commitment to assist in recovery:

The US Navy will play a big role in the effort to assist Haiti. Donate to reputable response organizations, and keep Haitians in your prayers.

Quite possibly the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard a troll on this blog say, and it honestly just makes me see sad to see someone that believes this. Someone who quite obviously has never been to a real church/fraternal organization/etc.

Oh, yeah? Let’s see his sneery paper!

Kensington on January 13, 2010 at 2:26 PM

I don’t think Ambassador Joseph is sneering at all. You mistake what a counterpoint is — it’s a statement which provides an assertion the opposite of the statement to which it is a counter.

Joseph is actually saying that we gave his country a lot back then, and they’re sorry but they need it yet again.

Here’s an interesting article by the Harvard Business Review on charitywatch.org and its attempt to measure the efficiency of contributions to charity. A salient statement in that article:

The big questions on the horizon are about agency and scale. A $1 million budget is no match for the $307 billion America gave to charity in 2008, or for the 700,000-plus active charities in America. Considering the resources it will take to perform objective assessments of that number of organizations, keep them up to date, make them accessible to everyone, and make the donating public aware that they exist, a million dollars is vapor in the bucket.

$307 billion dollars in private donations to charity in a single year by our country is not stingy, no matter how dave742 wants to slice it. dave742 takes one event (a tsunami) and tries to extrapolate from a single event — one of many in a the year 2005 — about how charitable the people as a whole are. I’m wondering how Germany (the seeming top donator per capita for that event) looks if you measure Katrina? And, looking at Dave’s own chart, $1.7B in private donations by Americans for the tsunami is a pretty hefty amount, and dwarfs all the other figures on the chart.

Of course, there’s promises, and there’s action. By dave’s own source, note that Germany has promised much but delivered — a bit more than half of what it promised. Whereas the United States promised much and delivered 100%.

Wrong. The US is one of the stingiest countries on the planet. Certainly the stingiest among first world countries:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/24424956/Tsunami-Aid

What a crock of utter horse shit.

That article has to be one of the saddest, most pathetic attempts of academia I’ve ever had the misfortune of reading – and I’ve read some serious tripe in my day.

Not only do you have to resort to silly GDP percentage games to knock the US off the top spot of every list, but you throw in silly, immature rhetoric to back it up.

He was too busy vacationing in Crawford Texas to bother with dead brown people.

Damn that Bush for ‘vacationing’ on Christmas when the Tsunami hit on the 26′th. What a fucking monster.

Second, people in different countries make different amounts of money!! For example, the GDP per capita in Saudi Arabia is $20,500, and in the US it is $46,900. If someone is making twice as much money as you are, they should give more money to charity. Bill Gates should give a lot more money to charity than the average American.

Brilliant. I particularly like the double exclamation mark. Nothing gets a point across like !!

You just summed up why Liberals are brain dead muppets. Your original point was that the US government amount given (the most, which is a fact that you can’t change – no matter how much you try to skew the data) was disproportionally small to its GDP.

You then follow up by bitching about how the GDP per capita in the US is much larger than Saudi Arabia and that those that make more should give more.

So which one is it? are we graphing civilian monetary donations or government aid? Which brings me to another point – do you even have the slightest idea how much other aid – both financial and military – the US gives to countries in areas other than disaster relief?

Or are you so incredibly retarded that you actually believe US government spending is divided across equal categories and in equal amounts as a country like say…Canada…or your favorite ludicrous example…Saudi Arabia?

Do you even read this shit?

Is this a joke?

I also looked at what OECD countries give for ALL combined aid. The US came in 21st out of 22. Saudi Arabia gives 18 times as much aid as the US when accounting for ALL sources, not just one event.

Whereas the United States promised much and delivered 100%.

Not according to this.

Let’s start with this premise:

As I said to Mark the great, there is no difference between personal and government aid. The American people are just as cheap as the American government.

dave742 on January 13, 2010 at 1:36 PM

That’s your conclusion and you seek “facts” to prove it. That isn’t objective research, it’s opinion writing.

Your second sentence says:

Mr. Spencer is a writer on the fringe right

Fringe right? How objective.

Footnote 18:

For a discussion of this and also a discussion of how cheap and smelly Americans are

Like I said, you had your conclusion and worked backwards. Additionally, your bibliography and references in your paper are weak. If I was grading the paper, I’d return it to you to rewrite it or give you a C.

The paper largely seems to take on Robert Spencer (who by the way uses his real name unlike you).

People here have provided links and information about U.S. giving and aid from the government, charity, and personal giving, but you refuse to acknowledge it. You have a spur in your saddle.

I can’t respond to you anymore, I have to get back to work.

unclesmrgol on January 13, 2010 at 2:56 PM

That’s another point. dave wants to take a single event and look at it in isolation. People in my church already support about a dozen missions around the world. These are committments that we have already made. When an event like the Christmass tsuname or this earthquake happen, what we give is on top of what we are already giving. We can’t stop are previously given committments, otherwise those missions could collapse and all the good work done in those places be lost.

As I and others have stated, dave is not looking to find out the truth, he’s trying to prove a predetermined point, and he’s willing to use distortion and outright lies to get there.

Unlike you, I don’t care if I’m giving $10 or $1,000 I want to make sure that at least 75% of my money is going to those who need it. What’s the point of giving if it doesn’t get to the intended recipient? I don’t want to give $4 or $400 to those in need and the other $6 or $600 goes to administrative costs.

You’re still relying on a flawed methodology. Percentage of GDP is meaningless because it measures intentions (imperfectly) instead of outcomes. You might want to consider that the UN is being a little credulous when they take Saudi Arabia’s word for it that they gave a certain amount, too.

There’s not much more to say. If you really want a meaningful analysis of foreign aid, it might help if you actually analyzed something. Until then, all you have are self-serving statistics cobbled together from unreliable sources with nothing but your lame insults to connect them.

One more thing I forgot to add. Consider the state of the middle east. Much of its population is desperately poor and hopelessly repressed. So when you see that they’re giving a relatively big chunk of their GDP to other countries, keep in mind that those countries need aid themselves. Are they giving to other countries or taking from their own people? If the U.S. could look more like the Middle East by adopting their policies, are you seriously suggesting the world would be a better place?

The funny thing is that the US actually accepted this aid. When the tsunami hit, India was offered a share of the aid package, since they were affected by the tsunami. They refused it, and actually donated instead. They considered themselves to be too developed a country to actually accept aid. The US, however, does not have the dignity that India apparently does.

Had they remained in Haiti this would have never occurred. While they love their country of origin, both acknowledge the main problem is the corrosive, overwhelming culture of corruption and no matter what coup takes place that culture just continues unabated as the power corrupts everyone who acquires it and the majority live in extreme poverty which breeds crime. It is their opinion that the lack of education/poverty perpetuates the practice of voo-doo, which holds back the entire country and helps assure those currently in power remain in power.
The people of Haiti need our prayers and support- if someone out there knows of the best charity via which to send donations, please post ( I may have just missed it- so apologies if I did)

To answer your question, I don’t think that an issue as complex as cultural generosity (for lack of a better phrase) can be studied in dollars and cents. I think I got a little off track from the point I want to make. Even if everything you say is true, even if we’re just stingy bastards by world standards, our stinginess still serves a purpose. We’re better off for it, and our welfare counts as much as any other country’s welfare. If more countries adopted Western stinginess, they wouldn’t need aid in the first place.

I sent a Franklin or two via the following orgs:

http://www.planusa.org

World Vision does the non-denominational Christian thing, Plan has a more secular approach, both are child-centered and efficient, and both have people on the ground.

Ignore the trolls.

I don’t think any such comparison is possible or productive.

The second post on this thread included this: “Providing relief is where America really shines.” If I had not posted on this thread, I doubt that you would have said the same to that person. If I had not posted, half the thread would have been dedicated to people talking about how generous Americans are (if you deny this, I will be happy to look up previous HA/tsunami threads to show that this is the case – in fact, on CaptainsQuarters Ed would devote entire threads showing American generosity, which is how I first starting reading about this subject. Was it “productive” for Ed to make this comparison?). I guess when you use slanted stats to try and show that America is generous, then a comparison is possible and productive. But if you use fair methods to show the opposite, then comparisons are not productive. It’s funny how that works.

“Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrat h? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice can not sleep forever- …. that it may become probable by supernatural interference!”

I have analyzed the numbers, and know the result. I have not written the paper. I did not pre-determine anything.

If you read the present paper, you will see how Spencer gave a value of $300 million for aid given by Saudi Arabia. I adjusted this down to 32.4 million. Did I “pre-determine” that? No. I adjusted Saudis contribution down because that was the reality. I am honest. If you think I am not, then show me where.

Ed, please post a statement denouncing what Pat Robertson said about Haiti and its people. I truly find it offensive to think that anyone would try to claim that God was punishing this nation for a “pact with the Devil.” Utterly disgusting.

If course not. Anyone would could claim with a straight face (or, in his case, a sneer) that, because the Bush Administration would not wait for the UN dictator’s club to drop their petty bickering for one f*cking minute and get aid to desperate people as soon as possible, “unilaterally” sending in the US Navy to deliver aid was a “political ploy” to “undermine the UN” should not be taken seriously on any subject.

If you have any type of skills even if they are only being able to sweep up after builders then you would be of use. Our little church in the out backs of NE Arizona just sent 2 people to Samoa to help rebuilding efforts there. My guess is that when they get back in 3 weeks we will start the process to send some to Haiti.

More from dave742
http://pajamasmedia.com/michaelledeen/2009/02/03/who-are-the-suicide-bombers/

Why did Hezbollah and communists resort to suicide bombing and “terrorism”? They were being occupied! What happened when Israel withdrew from Lebanon? The suicide bombing stopped!

Suicide bombing was unknown in both Iraq and Afghanistan before the US occupation of those countries. Now suicide bombing is quite popular in those countries.

The LTTE is the most prolific suicide bombing group in modern history. The are Hindu/secular. They are occupied. See the pattern?

Don’t know much about the poster in question, so at the moment, I am withholding judgement. But I do have to wonder where people get the idea that Israel can control the USA.

And I do hope it isn’t just another “moneygrubbing jews” reasoning, that’s about as “tired, worn-out policies reasoning of the past” as one can possibly get.

If they had called Europeans cheap and smelly I might have objected.

Are you saying we’re both hypocrites? For the record, I don’t think Ed is right — or can be right — if he thinks American generosity is unique to the world. But he’s not insulting anybody too severely by shaking the tip jar with an appeal to our better nature.

I guess when you use slanted stats to try and show that America is generous, then a comparison is possible and productive.

Where have I done this?

With that, I’m going to bow out. I think we can both agree that the thread would be better spent discussing how we can help Haiti recover from this terrible disaster.

We’re building those aircraft carriers to supply relief aid? I didn’t know! I hereby withdraw my paper and all that I found.
dave742 on January 13, 2010 at 2:39 PM

Of course not, yet they are dual use machines are they not? Ever seen a Coast Guard rescue chopper; they have pintle mounts near the doors for mounting machine guns. Are they being built strictly for rescue operations?

The point is not WHAT the carriers are being built for, it’s the indisputable fact that all the money in the world won’t help anyone if the relief supplies can’t get to the victims. Saudi Arabia provides cash, that’s great, now how do they plan on getting it there?

notropis on January 13, 2010 at 4:24 PM

Dave 742 the problem with what you are arguing is that you can never account for all the individual acts of giving that Americans do. See my 4:13 pm post.
Many, many Americans jump on planes or jump in their cars and go to where help is needed and pay for this themselves or others cover those costs so their skills can be utilized in an area that needs it. To slam American’s because they don’t donate in manner you find acceptable is quite judgemental on your part. Since you find quoting Scripture to support your position (Widow’s mite) how about taking the log out of your eye before trying to take the splinter out of our eyes.

1. Knowing what we know about the Haitian government, they will exagerrate this disaster in order to attempt to extort as much from our coffers as possible.

2. It’s not the US government’s responsibility to solve the problems of foreign nations, especially those in the Third World who have nothing to offer us in terms of resources or trade.

But I have no problem with the stream of private donations that will surely come from American citizens and organizations.

One of the reasons I’m so proud of this service. The USNS Mercy and other ships bearing Sailors and Marines will head on down to Haiti and help that nation recover from this terrible tragedy.
