Rasmussen: Brown cuts Coakley’s lead from nine points to two — in a week; Update: Dem private poll shows Coakley by five
posted at 5:29 pm on January 12, 2010 by Allahpundit
Too sweet to be buried as an update to the last post. In fact, if you exclude leaners, Brown actually leads by one — which syncs perfectly with that PPP poll over the weekend.
I’m starting to believe. A little. Maybe.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley attracting 49% of the vote while her Republican rival, state Senator Scott Brown, picks up 47%.
Three percent (3%) say they’ll vote for independent candidate Joe Kennedy, and two percent (2%) are undecided. The independent is no relation to the late Edward M. Kennedy, whose Senate seat the candidates are battling to fill in next Tuesday’s election.
Coakley is supported by 77% of Democrats while Brown picks up the vote from 88% of Republicans. Among voters not affiliated with either major party, Brown leads 71% to 23%. To be clear, this lead is among unaffiliated voters who are likely to participate in the special election.
71-23. Any reason to think any of those numbers are true, incidentally? Remember, the left would have you believe that all Rasmussen polls come straight from Satan’s statistics department.
Yeah, there’s a reason:
In a sign of serious worry about the increasingly tense battle for Ted Kennedy’s seat, the Democratic National Committee and the Martha Coakley campaign have blasted a private memo to top national Dem donors claiming internal polling shows the race is “very tight” and making an “urgent” appeal for donations.
The memo, which was sent over by a source, is the latest sign that the campaign surge of GOPer Scott Brown has caught the Dem establishment off guard. It admits that the mobilization by big national conservative groups for Brown is “working” and acknowledges that the Dem camaign is “having trouble moving independents.”…
“We have a battle on our hands,” the memo continues, beseeching donors to “max out” with a contribution of $2400. “We cannot win this race unless everyone comes together and gives this race everything they can.”
AP’s pessimism meter level: 2.5, indicating a mere likely chance of defeat, down last week from 9.5, a.k.a. catastrophic seppuku-inducing humiliation.
Update: Whoops, typo in the headline. Coakley’s lead was nine, not seven. Now corrected.
Update: Good news and bad news from Taegan Goddard. The bad? Democratic private polls reportedly show Coakley by five. The good? Last week, Democratic private polls showed Coakley by 14.

CNN just was talking to analysts that if Brown wins, the dems will just count the votes very slowly and stall for days to certify.
No outrage.
No “that’s not fair”
Just informing the viewers that this is how things are…
And of course, lest you forget, the 60th dem right now is only there because the squirrley mass legislature changed the law BACK (after changing it when mitt was there).

The dems will have to have Caroline Kennedy come out asking for Ted’s Senate seat to remain in “the democratic family”.
“So, like please like, you know, vote democrat. Like we’ve always had you know, a Kennedy in the like Senate.”

NY-23 part deux. He’s gonna lose. 5 points is as close as he gets in the end. Dead democrats voting is too much to overcome.

They wil, no doubt, ‘miraculously’ find D votes from ‘hanging chads’ & dimpled chads etc.
The Kennedy association I am sure brings with it all the corruption that family had to offer this country.
Badger40 on January 12, 2010 at 5:35 PM
I still don’t believe he takes this race. As much as I want to believe he does, if he doesn’t win by a 5% margin, the race will be stolen from him.

The GOP in the Senate can also slow things down by refusing unanimous consent to everything, suggesting the absence of a quorum, raising procedural challenges, etc. Might not be as slow, but still worth trying.

AP, wasn’t the last R-poll the one that showed Coakley ahead by nine, not seven?
That’s an even bigger boost.
KingGold on January 12, 2010 at 5:36 PM
Turnout, turnout, turnout.
Would you show up to vote for someone who says she plans to follow the Democratic Leadership instead of what you want?
I don’t know the Obamacare numbers in Mass, but unless the Dems are for it over 90% there is a good chance.
barnone on January 12, 2010 at 5:37 PM
A closer analysis of the poll data shows some interesting things, namely that Brown gets a spike of voters who have high unfavorable views of Coakley, but that Coakley doesn’t appear to get a similar spike from voters who dislike brown (the % from the unfavorables is half the size)
This supports the vengence vote theory, that, dem-haters will turn out for brown, but republican haters will stay home and smoke their pot.

nope. in NY23, the 2 ‘right wing party’ candidates got about 53% in total.
here, the third party candidate is a libertarian yes but he is named KENNEDY. no self respecting gop will vote for the libertarian in this race knowing its winnable, and some idiot Dems will see joe kennedy on the ballot with “lib” behind it and think its TEDDYS BOY!!!!!!!
Brown 50%
Coakley 47%
Kennedy, others 3%

right2bright on January 12, 2010 at 5:40 PM
It will all be about turn out. But the problem is that Coakley is getting somewhere between 49%-53% in all the recent polls. It’ll be tough for Brown to get all the remaining votes, which is what he’ll need to do with those numbers, with third party candidates.

first, you know the polls are oversampling dems, and second, r’s will be more motivated now than in 30 years. every single r that just registers as a dem to vote in primaries to have something to vote on, will come out. it’s the reverse of what happened with obama in NC (first time black voters that never voted before coming out to vote)

Does anyone know exactly when Rasmussen did his poll? The Brown-Coakley debate was last night 7-8PM local time. If Rasmussen was polling before 8PM, the poll will have missed some of the direct effects on voters who watched it live, on the 10 or 11 o’clock broadcast news, or on cable news shows that night. In addition, today’s newspapers, and TV and radio programs were full of quotes/clips, which should further influence voters. Therefore, I suspect that Coakley’s situation is even worse than Rasmussen’s poll shows.
