Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 12, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

When David Plouffe wrote in his memoirs that Barack Obama scoffed at John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin for his running mate as “wing[ing] it,” I noted that the man who picked Joe Biden as his own running mate had little room to criticize. As it turns out, Obama discovered that for himself the hard way. In their new book Game Change, Mark Halperin and John Heileman report that it didn’t take long for Obama to be horrified by the loose cannon he had picked, and to put him on a short leash:

Of all the freshly revealed anecdotes, though, none may be as eye-opening as the previously-unknown friction between the president and vice-president – which on Saturday a Biden spokesman dismissed as “rumors.” The tensions began in September of 2008 word got back to Obama’s campaign headquarters that Biden had told reporters on his campaign plane that he was more qualified than his running mate to be president. …

Obama himself was growing increasingly frustrated with his running mate after Biden let loose with a string of gaffes, including a statement that paying higher taxes amounted to patriotism and criticism of one of the campaign’s own ads poking fun at John McCain.

But when Biden, at an October fund-raiser in Seattle, famously predicted that Obama would be tested with an international crisis, the then-Illinois senator had had enough.

“How many times is Biden gonna say something stupid?” he demanded of his advisers on a conference call, a moment at which most people on the call said the candidate was as angry as they had ever heard him.

How many times is Biden gonna say something stupid? As often as you’ll let him, Mr. President. Why did that come as such a surprise? Everyone in politics knew what a dolt Joe Biden is. What was Biden’s most well-known historical accomplishment? He stole speeches from Neil Kinnock and forgot to change the descriptions of Kinnock’s family when delivering them. That Mensa disqualifier knocked him out of the 1988 presidential campaign.

And there was more. With all of the attention on Harry Reid’s bon mot on the “Negro dialect” and skin color, who can forget Biden’s greeting to an Indian-American supporter just two years before being selected as Obama’s running mate?

Small wonder that Biden has been one of the least visible of Vice-Presidents these days. Andrew Malcolm practically has a career noting the fact that the White House refuses to share Biden’s schedule. People used to joke about Dick Cheney hiding out in undisclosed locations — but no one is even remotely interested in where Biden spends his days.

Obama learned a lesson from this Obamateurism, but he has no one to blame for Biden but himself. Had he paid the least bit of attention to Biden, he could have easily predicted his predicament … as we all did in August 2008.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Maybe Barack the Magnificent is keeping Joe around as a distraction. You know, comic relief.

kingsjester on January 12, 2010 at 8:10 AM

It’s amazing that you can point to something zero says or does on a daily basis, to show he is inexperienced and incompetent to be the president.

After New Jersey and Virginia, and the upcoming senate race in Taxachusetts, things will not bode well for the liberals come November. Of course, if we sweep them out of power, we’ll all be tarred as racist teabaggers.

JohnO on January 12, 2010 at 8:14 AM

People used to joke about Dick Cheney hiding out in undisclosed locations — but no one is even remotely interested in where Biden spends his days.

The funny thing is that he was only on the ticket to provide gravitas when it comes to international affairs- an area where our post-American President has no interest. Biden and Hillary Clinton might as well be on milk cartons as little as they are seen and as little as they do in this administration.

BTW, I’m being nice since Biden’s mother’s funeral is today.

And he won the election handily.

Obama bought himself a few headaches during the campaign… but he won. What does he care now? Why is this a story?

JohnO on January 12, 2010 at 8:14 AM

Michael Scott is more like Obama. A complete loser who thinks he is providing inspirational dynamic leadership. A man who doesn’t ever question his own decisions even when the evidence points to complete failure. A man that isn’t taken seriously.

It all becomes clearer if one runs the anagram for ‘Joe Biden‘.

Yoop on January 12, 2010 at 8:19 AM

Every now and again (this thread, for example), I am reminded how Jonah Goldberg (?) described Biden’s capped teeth as the high beams of an on coming car. They flash at you as if warning, “My God, the brakes are out on this thing and I can’t stop!”

Joe may say strange things. Some consider them gaffes, others consider them just Joe-being-Joe. But I think he is just saying what is on his mind, right or wrong, with no intention of deceiving.

Barack Obama, on the other hand, with regularity says things he knows to be untrue, with the full intent of deceiving.

I’ll take Joe.

Well-done, Ed!

Unfortunately this is a metaphor for Obama’s general incompetence and ignorance. If he can’t even connect the dots about Biden, how can we expect him to connect the dots on radical Islam (or the economy, for that matter)?

It also leads one to suspect that TOTUS (with script written by Axelrod and Emanuel) truly is Obama’s brain; that he is merely a vessel for the Marxist/fascist, oops, I mean “progressive” agenda. Clearly, the Commissars counseled Obama to make Biden the Veep, and he failed to do even the minimum amount of due diligence in vetting him.

Buy Danish on January 12, 2010 at 8:34 AM

he must have really owed Biden & Co. alot to pick Biden as VP. I see where he wouldn’t want Hillary for a host of reasons. And that didn’t hurt him in the long run.

my guess is that he picked Joe Biden so that those of us redneck, Bible clinging, gun-toting, tea bagging, ignorant Americans would see a gray-haired white man & think voting for B+rack was ok.

If the media could have been objective in it’s reporting, I wonder if things would have turned out differently.

Look at the treatment of McCain/Palin as opposed to Obama/Biden.

It blows my mind. But what takes the cake is how the public at large fell for it, and still falls for it!

Possible but not likely IMHO. I think the explanation is simpler: those who are insecure and only pretend to be smart tend to surround themselves with people who are mediocre so as not to show up the weak man at the top.

Barack Obama picked Joe Biden as his own running mate

More like the man was told by the powers that be ( Reid, Pelosi, Demonrat party power brokers ) that this is the guy who is your running mate. Pookie himself had said he was not ready to run for President, but the party said “Hey, here’s a clean and articulate Negro….we hit the PC jackpot”, and ran him as their puppet, telling him “Hey, you get to enjoy the perks of the office, but we’re really in charge…..got that, boy pal ???……

conspiracy tinfoil hat off/ ????

Jerome Horwitz on January 12, 2010 at 8:41 AM

And don’t forget, in his own Reid-ism, Smokin’ Joe described Obama as “clean and articulate,” killing his own 2008 presidential campaign the day he launched it.

We were told we could vote for the inexperienced Obama because he had preternaturally great judgment. Yet he picked a bully, jerk, and a blowhard for his running-mate. If the electorate hadn’t been drunk on Hopium, that should have been a giant screaming clue about The One’s “judgment.”

With the way that the Obama administration is treating their constituents, their Senators, congressmen and the rest of us with such disdain and heavy-handedness, it makes sense that Joe Biden is one day going to be the only guy in America that can say something honest about the President and make it stick. Obama can’t fire him, Joe could care less about what the president thinks of him—maybe we should tap into Joe just a wee bit more…

Way back when, I wondered what would possess a man as intelligent as a Senator (should be) to blatantly use uncredited but easily recognized context from others speeches and events to use in their own speech. A speech in which the man was seeking the Office of the Presidency. I guessing now all these years later, the simple answer is that there’s no requirement to be intelligent, to be a senator.

I agree that Biden is a dolt, and I am glad that word of the dysfunction between him and The Teleprompter in Chief is getting out sooner rather than later. But having finally now seen that Indian-American clip for the first time, I can say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It is basically true, and it was delivered with a positive, friendly attitude.

It would have been better if Biden had given an encyclopedia rendition of the accomplishments of Indian-Americans in science, etc? Yawn. It would have been condescending. He was being real. We do ourselves a disservice if we descend to the Crats’ level of political correctness in order to nail them. It’s one thing to point out hypocrisy, such as the party of feminism and equality countenancing Bill Clinton’s philandering or Reid racial remarks. But when we affirm the political correctness itself in order to make political hay, we’ve crossed the line.

tims472 on January 12, 2010 at 9:11 AM

Truthfully, this is the first time that Obama has actually seen the consequences of his actions. It is new territory for him so he is surprised. Every other job that he has had was a stepping stone to something else. He went with the flow, voted present, and otherwise made as little a footprint (i.e. track record) as possible so that there was nothing to stick him with when he ran for the next office. The Presidency doesn’t work that way and Obama doesn’t like it that he’s being held accountable for the first time in his life.

The House gets back today so Pelosi can skulk in the shadows to keep support for Obamacare. Reid has pretty much stolen all the oxygen from the Senate by his racist comments. No investigation, of course, happened.

O/T, but those of us who live and/or work in Wilmington, Delaware are REALLY looking forward to the Obamas coming to town today for Biden’s mother’s funeral.

The church is located just off I-95 at Rt 202, a heavily travelled area. I can only imagine the kluge that will result from all the security. It would not surprise me at all if they totally shut down I-95.

I’m going to avoid that area like the plague.

Hey UB, dittoes for me but fortunately for us we can follow the funeral on Twitter so that we don’t miss a moment.

DaydreamBeliever on January 12, 2010 at 10:19 AM

Actually, he picked Biden because he was concerned about losing Pennsylvania, after his disastrous primary performance here.

rockmom on January 12, 2010 at 8:52 AM

Bingo. After all, Joe was from PA, even though he was really from Delaware. It was a two-fer.

UltimateBob on January 12, 2010 at 10:24 AM

Biden would be vastly preferable as President.

He’s a fool and an idiot.

But he isn’t deliberately trying to destroy the United States.

notagool on January 12, 2010 at 10:35 AM

If anyone thinks that Obama will ever blame Obama for his mistakes, you are wrong.

jukin on January 12, 2010 at 10:36 AM

Obama was to busy admiring himself to notice anything, or look at any history on Biden.

Just like voters. He didn’t bother to do his homework, and now lives with regrets!

capejasmine on January 12, 2010 at 10:44 AM

Everyone in politics knew what a dolt Joe Biden is.

Yea….except, you know….all the liberals who were going around talking about how “Biden is the smartest man in the room…Biden is the smartest man in the Senate!!!!”

Yea…the very same guy who thinks J-O-B-S is a three letter word.

Obama bought himself a few headaches during the campaign… but he won. What does he care now? Why is this a story?

mankai on January 12, 2010 at 8:18 AM

This is a story because it is just another example of the poor judgment and amateurish actions of the Obama administration.

Biden was picked for his quote “foreign policy gravitas” yet Biden’s record on foreign policy is a major joke.

He has been right about little to nothing.

Wanting to divide Iraq up based on religious beliefs

Wanting to give Iran hundreds of millions of dollars in the days after 9/11 in the hopes of friendship and corporation.

Biden wanted to cut-and-run in Iraq after spending years telling everybody how dangerous Saddam was with his WMD’s/ties to al-qaeda.

Biden was against the surge.

….and of course Biden was a huge supporter of the Iraq war well before Bush became President and up until the democrats decided to politicize it.

But we can’t seem to talk about what comes next without talking about Iraq. It’s obvious we must end the reign of Saddam Hussein. It would be unrealistic, if not downright foolish, to believe we can claim victory in the war on terrorism if Saddam is still in power.

– Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. in Remarks On Saddam Hussein At The Center For Strategic And International Studies Forum, Washington, D.C., February 4, 2002

And of course Mr. Biden voted for the War in Iraq.

Biden stated that the case against Saddam was a slam dunk….

Biden Said The Bush Administration Had Enough Classified Evidence On Iraq To Gain A Conviction At A Jury Trial. “Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., D-Del., said Tuesday on Capitol Hill that ‘the administration has evidence now that can change people’s minds.’ However, Biden said, ‘It’s a very tough call as to how much to release.’ Biden said he did not think the administration would make photographs public, as Adlai E. Stevenson, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, did in 1962 to back the Kennedy administration’s claim the Soviet Union had deployed missiles in Cuba that could strike the United States. But, Biden said, ‘I know there is enough circumstantial evidence that if there were a jury trial I could convict you.’” (Barry Schweid, “Administration Plans Disclosure Of Intelligence On Weapons,” The Associated Press, 1/28/03)

Even when stockpiles of WMD were not found..Biden still stood by his vote 100%……..

In July 2003, Amid Questions Concerning A Lack Of Stockpiles Of Weapons Of Mass Destruction In Iraq, Biden Defended The War As “Justified” And Said “I Still Believe That Saddam Possessed Weapons Of Mass Destruction.” Biden: “I still believe that Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction and that the war in Iraq was justified.” (Sen. Joe Biden, “Statement Of Senator Joe Biden On The White House’s Acknowledgment That Iraq-Uranium Assertion Was Wrong,” Press Release, biden.senate.gov, 7/8/03)

So how does super smart Mr. Hope and Change view this type of foreign policy decision making…

Obama states that those who supported the Iraq war “helped engineer the biggest foreign policy disaster in our generation”…

Obama Attacked Proponents Of The Iraq War As Having “Helped To Authorize And Engineer The Biggest Foreign Policy Disaster In Our Generation.” Obama: “Well, look, I find it amusing that those who helped to authorize and engineer the biggest foreign policy disaster in our generation are now criticizing me for making sure that we are on the right battlefield and not the wrong battlefield in the war against terrorism.” (Sen. Barack Obama, MSNBC/AFL-CIO Democrat Presidential Forum, 8/7/07)

….That’s right…the “worst foreign policy decision making of a generation”….

…..SO LET’S MAKE HIM MY RUNNING MATE!!!!!

Of course Biden does not care what Obama thinks because he stated plainly that Obama does not have the experience or the expertise to know what he is doing anyway…..

Biden Said Obama Is Not Ready To Serve As President. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos: “You were asked is he ready. You said ‘I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.’” Sen. Biden: “I think that I stand by the statement.” (ABC’s, “This Week,” 8/19/07)

So how in the he!! do you square this circle.
How can someone be so wrong ….so much…about so many important issues yet the super intelligent Obama crew say…..
LET’S MAKE HIM OUR RUNNING MATE!!!

It goes straight to the pattern of poor judgment and decision making we see from the liberal leadership that is constantly bragging about how intelligent they are.

…the “smartest man in the senate” is a plagiarist.

Biden the plagiarist….

Then  Neil Kinnock happened. Biden borrowed passages of a speech given by Kinnock, a leader in Britain’s Labour Party, without attribution — a mistake that led to a detailed examination of Biden’s public statements that turned up several more examples of potential plagiarism and resume inflation. The feeding frenzy eventually chased the Delaware senator from the race.

…Mr. super smart Hope and Change puts a guy who admits he’s not an economist in charge of the 1.3 trillion (with interest) stimulus….which has failed….

“I’m sorry I’m not an economist,” Biden said as he was describing the methodology. “My background is foreign policy and the constitution. “

This is why this is important….
…it shows on so many levels how liberals constantly tell people how dam# smart they are even when the reality on the ground shows otherwise.

…..it shows seriously poor judgment coming from the liberal President that was supposed to be so much smarter than everybody else……

Typical liberals…
…………Typical Biden…

- During a Sept. 12, 2008, speech in Columbia, Mo., Biden called for Missouri State Sen. Chuck Graham, who is wheelchair-bound, to “stand up.”

Stand up Chuck!!!!
Stand up Chuck!!!!….whoa yea…the smartest man in the room!!!!!
