Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 12, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

When David Plouffe wrote in his memoirs that Barack Obama scoffed at John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin for his running mate as “wing[ing] it,” I noted that the man who picked Joe Biden as his own running mate had little room to criticize. As it turns out, Obama discovered that for himself the hard way. In their new book Game Change, Mark Halperin and John Heileman report that it didn’t take long for Obama to be horrified by the loose cannon he had picked, and to put him on a short leash:

Of all the freshly revealed anecdotes, though, none may be as eye-opening as the previously-unknown friction between the president and vice-president – which on Saturday a Biden spokesman dismissed as “rumors.” The tensions began in September of 2008 word got back to Obama’s campaign headquarters that Biden had told reporters on his campaign plane that he was more qualified than his running mate to be president. …

Obama himself was growing increasingly frustrated with his running mate after Biden let loose with a string of gaffes, including a statement that paying higher taxes amounted to patriotism and criticism of one of the campaign’s own ads poking fun at John McCain.

But when Biden, at an October fund-raiser in Seattle, famously predicted that Obama would be tested with an international crisis, the then-Illinois senator had had enough.

“How many times is Biden gonna say something stupid?” he demanded of his advisers on a conference call, a moment at which most people on the call said the candidate was as angry as they had ever heard him.

How many times is Biden gonna say something stupid? As often as you’ll let him, Mr. President. Why did that come as such a surprise? Everyone in politics knew what a dolt Joe Biden is. What was Biden’s most well-known historical accomplishment? He stole speeches from Neil Kinnock and forgot to change the descriptions of Kinnock’s family when delivering them. That Mensa disqualifier knocked him out of the 1988 presidential campaign.

And there was more. With all of the attention on Harry Reid’s bon mot on the “Negro dialect” and skin color, who can forget Biden’s greeting to an Indian-American supporter just two years before being selected as Obama’s running mate?

Small wonder that Biden has been one of the least visible of Vice-Presidents these days. Andrew Malcolm practically has a career noting the fact that the White House refuses to share Biden’s schedule. People used to joke about Dick Cheney hiding out in undisclosed locations — but no one is even remotely interested in where Biden spends his days.

Obama learned a lesson from this Obamateurism, but he has no one to blame for Biden but himself. Had he paid the least bit of attention to Biden, he could have easily predicted his predicament … as we all did in August 2008.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

“Judgment to Lead”

AZCoyote on January 12, 2010 at 11:08 AM

I wonder if Joe will be on the ticket in 2010? If Nancy loses the house, how about a woman on the ticket.

(I just threw up in my mouth a little.)

LOL

It just occurred to me. Are we to believe Obama is all that he’s been touted to be? That he puts deep, and contemplated thought into his decisions? Does he have the capacity to study, and really look at situations, and make the right decisions? I don’t think so. It took him months to make a decision on Afghanistan, and I don’t believe he was in deep thought over it. He gave in to pressure on that. Which speaks volumes to his pick for a VP. He put absolutely no thought into it, or anything. His biggest decisions are…which tux to wear at the next dinner he’s going to, or which tie goes best with this suit? Boxers, or briefs?

Remember how the “smartest man in the Senate” was supposed to wipe the floor up with Palin in the VP debate….but instead showed just how much of an idiot he has always been.

This was one of the dumbest gaffes:

Biden: “We Kicked Hezbollah Out Of Lebanon”

http://www.mererhetoric.com/archives/11274902.html

What the hell?

BIDEN: When we kicked — along with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon, I said and Barack said, “Move NATO forces in there. Fill the vacuum, because if you don’t know — if you don’t, Hezbollah will control it.” Now what’s happened? Hezbollah is a legitimate part of the government in the country immediately to the north of Israel.

No, seriously: what the hell? I have no idea what he’s talking about. And even if I did: Obama thinks Syria is the solution to Hezbollah. Which means that Obama has been listening to his anti-Israel advisers a wee bit too much.

UPDATE: I also forgot to mention: (1) NATO has what mandate to go into Lebanon? (2) An international force has been a disaster for Israel. Other than all of this – great answer from the Dem’s top foreign policy mind.

Here’s some of the other ones the super smart liberal made campaigning for the “Greatest Administration EVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!”

An insurance policy?

“So, you don’t like me? Take a look at who’s next in line.”

BobMbx on January 12, 2010 at 9:57 AM

That is correct. I’ll take Doomsday bombs for $200, Alex.

Biden is not worth caring about unless Obama dies. He hasn’t, has he? Wake me if that changes.

Extrafishy on January 12, 2010 at 11:43 AM

Picking Biden wasn’t an error. Just another example of The One’s “vast executive experience”.

GarandFan on January 12, 2010 at 12:07 PM

Obama’s pick of Biden was a stroke of genius, the best possible way to have a Republican Senator from Delaware.

Now he’s Biden his time.

Don’t count on it. I live here in Delaware, and it is a very blue state. The voters here just wuv their widdle Joey and all the handouts that they get from their democrat politicians.

Rumor has it that his son is going to run for the open Senate seat. So the “Biden” dynasty will continue…..

criticism of one of the campaign’s own ads poking fun at John McCain

In case it slip off your mind, the ad was making fun of McCain not able to type on a keyboard.

It had backfired BIG TIME.

Sir Napsalot on January 12, 2010 at 1:59 PM

UB, a surprise. I am also in DE.

Sir Napsalot on January 12, 2010 at 2:00 PM

O/T, but those of us who live and/or work in Wilmington, Delaware are REALLY looking forward to the Obamas coming to town today for Biden’s mother’s funeral.

The church is located just off I-95 at Rt 202, a heavily travelled area. I can only imagine the kluge that will result from all the security. It would not surprise me at all if they totally shut down I-95.

UltimateBob on January 12, 2010 at 10:15 AM

I heard that Obama was coming to DE for the funeral, but had no idea it (the church) was on 202. Shoot!

Kinda sounds like Ol’ Joe plays “Risk” to develop his strategery. He’s rolling now and calling on Egypt to attack Middle East.

The missus says the funeral was at IHM, on Shipley Road.

ya2daup on January 12, 2010 at 2:29 PM

Heh! Biden and Mensa mentioned in the same paragraph, now that’s funny.
