Meltdown: NBC/Conan/Leno feud now a full-blown public spectacle
posted at 4:34 pm on January 12, 2010 by Allahpundit
The news is slow, the egos are huge, the embarrassment to MSNBC’s parent company is great, and this is a press release for the ages. I’d call it a palate cleanser, but it’s just too … zesty.
To steal an easy Leno-esque joke I saw on Twitter: NBC’s handling of personnel? A solid B+.
It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.
But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.
Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.
Bottom line: Either he stays at 11:30 or he walks. Pretending for a moment that any of us cares how this shakes out, Ace is right that Conan’s really a late late night guy. Yeah, NBC could simply cut Leno loose, but he beat Letterman for years at 11:30, which, to paraphrase America’s second-most beloved ex-governor, is an effing valuable thing. Throwing senior citizens a bone by putting him back in that slot for a half hour and then Conan at midnight isn’t an insane compromise, even if it is a raw deal for NBC’s red-headed stepchild.
This, of course, is now the second time alleged nice guy Jay Leno has ended up in a nasty feud with another late-night host over the Tonight Show. To show you how surreal this situation has become, here’s 90 seconds from Conan’s monologue last night; note the “chin” crack. Exit question: What’s more annoying, O’Brien’s argument that the Tonight Show is some sort of quasi-religious institution that we dare not dislodge from the sanctified 11:30 hour or the realization that Jay Leno has this much sway over American entertainment?

I haven’t seen a product launch this bad since New Coke.

I liked Leno at 10:30. I don’t think Conan is funny.

It’s really hard to think of a topic I’m more ambivalent about. Not only do I not have a dog in this hunt, I don’t even have a dog…

They all suck: Leno (has some funny moments), Conan, NBC.
So who cares.
Badger40 on January 12, 2010 at 4:39 PM
NBC is stooopid, period. They ran out Jay Leno, they effed that up, now they’re running Conan out. In the end, I think everyone on NBC is simply going to end up dead, and Jimmy Fallon is going to end up at 1135.
El_Terrible on January 12, 2010 at 4:39 PM
NBC reaps what they sowed. I appreciate everyone’s behavior – Jay’s willingness to be flexible and Conan’s willingness to be inflexible and insist that a contract means something.
Spirit of 1776 on January 12, 2010 at 4:39 PM
Conan isn’t funny. He’s never been funny. He beats ideas to death then kicks them a few more times. The “in the year 2000″ thing was sorta funny – the first 1000 times. His interviews are just painful.
Jay is funny, in a non-offensive, boring way. But he has headlines. So there’s that.
lorien1973 on January 12, 2010 at 4:40 PM
It’s true.
He isn’t.

Leno should do the honorable thing and step aside. I thought in fact that that’s what he was agreeing to when Conan inked his Tonight Show deal back in 2004.
As for Conan, I agree his brand works better an hour later, but he paid his dues and he deserves a shot. Remember, his Late Night show sucked for a couple years before finding its groove. Even he concedes this.
And as for NBC, they’re trying to have the best of both(actually three) worlds. They wanted to hang onto Leno, give Conan the 11:35 slot so he wouldn’t bolt, and mask their primetime failures. Instead, they may end up with none of the above. That’s karma for ya.
Doughboy on January 12, 2010 at 4:42 PM

I just want “headlines” to be at the beginning of the show on Mondays.
That is all I care about. Not going to sit through an entire episode of Leno to watch the “headlines” segment.

I hope Conan leaves NBC and goes to Fox, and Fox create a late night lineup.
Why? Not because I like Conan, as I really do dislike him… but because I want to see NBC croak.

Conan is not funny. Jay’s writers for the longest time have fallen short of funny on a regular basis. I stopped watching Jay Leno a long time ago and Conan never peaked my interest. I could care less.
milwife88 on January 12, 2010 at 4:45 PM
Well he very well may leave NBC. I think he just had given this first shot (with his show) rather then compete with NBC and CBS on Fox. Now that’s a possibility.

leno had better ratings than conan or dave.
conan did not bring more younger viewers. conan flopped.
ho much time does he need? will he allow the network to pay him less $ until it catches on?
i think fox should get leno, but they’ll probably end up with conan – and it will flop.

And, we do have to respect Conan’s sidekick, what’s his name….Andy…..for kicking the liberal crap out of Blitzer on Jeopardy. Blister, the only Jeopardy contestant to run a deficit in Final Jeopardy.
BobMbx on January 12, 2010 at 4:48 PM
Which is worse for Letterman? Do that. Next.

At least Leno can see the conservative side once in a while. A shame that a-hole Letterman is benefitting from all this.

1. Biggest loser is NBC.
2. Conan will go to Fox.
3. Conan will pwn all.
Go Conan!
JVelez on January 12, 2010 at 4:49 PM
Conan can go away. As long as Leno keeps his schtick in the middle, not so bad. I don’t know who any of the other players are and don’t care. After Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon, no one is funny. Oh yeah, Doc, too.
Mirimichi on January 12, 2010 at 4:50 PM
I’d watch a half-hour show featuring Leno’s cars. A half-hour show featuring Leno, not so much.

Pretty stupid move on Conan’s part.
I’m sure he’s bringing in the big bucks and he isn’t funny, imo.
Maybe I’m wrong, but would he really be missed?

mizflame98 on January 12, 2010 at 4:47 PM
That must be why there’s been a big run on 52″ HD televisions w/1080p.
If Conan goes to Fox, he’ll suffer the same fate as Arsenio (I know Eddie Murphy) Hall and Joan Rivers.
kingsjester on January 12, 2010 at 4:50 PM
Close. Give Conan Olbie’s spot. MSNBC could then broadcast their version of The Daily Show. Conan would get better ratings than Olbie (by far), he’d stay in the NBC family and be ready in case Leno takes a premature dirt-nap, and Olbie can blog for Huffpo full-time. It could work…

Since Carson left, these two have been boring and boring-2 in late night telle…….Comcast has bought a lemon.
Rovin on January 12, 2010 at 4:51 PM
You’d almost think all this fuss is a ratings ploy by NBC to try and save both shows at their respective timeslots…
I say Fox should go snag Leno. He is easily the funniest of the bunch (Conan just doesn’t do it for me, I always did like andy though) and having Leno wipe the floor with Letterman, but under the fox banner, would be priceless.
Instead those idiots at Fox Broadcasting hired WANDA SYKES to do a weekend late night show? Ugh, amazing how moonbats run one part of Fox while a genius like Roger Ailes runs Fox News.
Just imagine a late night at Fox with Leno at 11:00 pm and Red Eye at 12:00 am! Come on, move Red Eye over to the big Fox, the pop culture crowd has never seen anything like it.

Why didn’t NBC just buy the rights to all of Carson’s shows and rerun them. They’d still be a helluva lot more funnier than the rest of these clowns!

I don’t watch any of them personally but Conan telling NBC to essentially drop dead did make me smile. And he addressed it to “People of Earth”. I want to start doing that in my e-mails.

I like both Jay and Conan. I agree with Allah that Conan fits more the late late night demographic. However, Jay is almost 60 or is 60 (I forget) maybe it is time for him to retire and do something else. He had a great run….he should just let it go.

Oh yeah, but Chicago
politicianswas going to make a killing in 2016.WashJeff on January 12, 2010 at 4:58 PM
Jay Leno certainly has sway over someone at NBC. That’s the only explanation for this inexplicable turn of events.
News flash – Jay Leno is OVER. His ratings on the Tonight Show were slipping before he moved to 10:00. If you ever needed proof that his audience has dwindled, you have it now. Conan’s getting killed at 11:30 because people have already switched off NBC at 10:00 and they aren’t coming back. That’s the way late night ratings have always worked. Even Johnny Carson used to complain about NBC’s primetime lineup.
And for God’s sake, please do not push Jimmy Fallon to 1:00 a.m. He’s the funniest person on TV right now, and at least once in a while I manage to stay up until 12:45 to watch the beginning of his show.
I agree with Conan here 100%. You don’t screw up a franchise that has been a goldmine for almost 50 years and blow up the deals you signed with two bright young hosts just for the sake of hanging on to an old has-been host that fewer and fewer people want to watch.
rockmom on January 12, 2010 at 4:59 PM

And for those say Conan isn’t funny, I offer the following:
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the “Clutch Cargo” interviews, the Walker Texas Ranger lever, Amy Poehler as Andy’s sister, the “More You Know” PSAs, the bit where he drove around Houston at 2AM, the staring contests, Pimpbot 5000, Carl “Oldie” Olson, the Masturbating Bear, If They Mated, any Norm McDonald interview(but especially the one with Courtney Thorne-Smith), and of course Max on Max.
If you’ve watched any of those and didn’t at least crack a smile, check your pulse.
