Coakley says no more terrorists in Afghanistan

posted at 10:12 am on January 12, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Jim Hoft caught this odd statement from Martha Coakley in last night’s debate, a moment that went mainly unnoticed before now.  While most of the post-debate attention has focused on Scott Brown’s Reaganesque moment in declaring that the Senate seat doesn’t belong to the Kennedy family or the Democrats but to all Massachusetts voters, Coakley had a Gerald Ford-esque moment on the war in Afghanistan.  She declared Afghanistan to be terrorist-free and wants the troops to come home now:

I think we have done what we are going to be able to do in Afghanistan. I think that we should plan an exit strategy. Yes. I’m not sure there is a way to succeed. If the goal was and the mission in Afghanistan was to go in because we believed that the Taliban was giving harbor to terrorists. We supported that. I supported that. They’re gone. They’re not there anymore.

The timing on this was rather poor, considering the deaths of eight CIA officers in Afghanistan just ten days ago at the hands of a suicide bomber. Jim clips together the suicide bomber’s valedictory message made just prior to his attack to underscore the point. The terrorists are definitely still in Afghanistan, both foreign and domestic, and capable of carrying out attacks.

Now, one could make an argument that our presence in Afghanistan provokes terrorist attacks such as the one that killed the eight CIA officers less than two weeks ago. I’d disagree with that — we weren’t in Afghanistan until after al-Qaeda firmly established itself there, with the blessing and the bidirectional support of the Taliban government — but it’s still an arguable point. Coakley didn’t make that argument, however, but instead insisted in quasi-Orwellian fashion that there are no terrorists left in a nation that just had a terrorist attack.

In the 1976 presidential campaign, Gerald Ford lost whatever chance he had for victory by asserting that Poland wasn’t under the direction of the Soviet Union, making him look detached from reality and throwing the election to Jimmy Carter. Hopefully, the voters of Massachusetts will make the same determination about Coakley in the aftermath of this debate and send someone much wiser than Carter or Coakley to Washington.

That’s not a solution. A solution is when the problem is resolved.

What should we have done after 9/11? Pull the US military out of Saudi Arabia, stop support for Israel and other allies and just say “Sorry, our fault!” ?

What do Islamist terrorists want? The answer should be obvious, but it is not.

“Islam will be victorious through the blood of martyrs who spread its light in every dark corner of this earth.” ~ Mohammed Bouyeri

What the terrorists want is abundantly clear. It requires monumental denial not to acknowledge it, but we Westerners have risen to the challenge.

We can’t change the minds of the current generation. But we could very much change the next generation. The only way to win this predicament is to win hearts and minds of the youth. Coakley is clearly an idiot. The fact is that Afghanistan is a Muslim country and we can bet at least 10% of all muslims there support terrorism against us. But that is no reason to still have over 60,000 troops there.

We should just make it clear to Afghanistan that if there are any terrorists, terrorist support, terrorism that we have any indication (it does not need to be beyond a reasonable doubt) comes from there we will carpet bomb areas of the country, and do the whole country if necessary. We made a big mistake spending hundreds of billions of dollars to install an islamist regime in Iraq. They of course will turn against us because they are muslim. Muslims hates. That not change in the next 100 years, at least. Why do we continue withold using massive bombing just to spend more money and have more of our soldiers killed?? We need to increase the brutality with which we deal with the muslim world. They need to fear us and right now it is very clear they do not have any fear of us.

georgealbert on January 12, 2010 at 3:29 PM

Muslim terrorists understand fear. It is a language our military is teaching them now.

The only reason to bring our men home, is if the president was not going to listen to our military leaders…seeing as he seems to have decided that Generals know more then this president, he seems to be listening a little…so carry on men.
But if the president doesn’t support our troops, I say bring them home to safety, and wait for another leader that knows how to win a war.

Brilliant satire! You seem to forget that we were invited into places where our troops are stationed, like Saudi Arabia. And the United Nations raised no objections-in fact, they were heavily involved in our evicting Iraq from Kuwait.

And what is this garbage about the Chinese in TX and FL? You’re really grasping at straws there…

Remember, bin Laden declared War against the US in 1996. He even specifically mentioned Bill Clinton by name. And one of the main reasons he gave for the 9/11 attacks had absolutely nothing to do with “US imperialism” or our “occupying countries and creating terrorists”. bin Laden said he was deeply offended by…Bill Clinton’s adultery.

And Canada’s National Post notes

Dozens of Saudi and Egyptian veterans of al-Qaeda’s operations in Afghanistan have been pouring into Yemen, a senior official warned yesterday. …

U.S. officials have said they are looking at ways to expand military and intelligence co-operation with Yemen, the poorest Arab state, to root out al-Qaeda leadership in the country.

“Al Qaeda,” Somalis, CIA, US officials, Saudis, Egyptians, Saddam’s Sunnis — sounds like Old Home Week in Yemen. And say: Isn’t that where the underpants bomber got his jihadi training and manual (aka, Koran)? But aren’t we now trying to figure out how to “surge” some 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan to fight al Qaeda or the Taliban or the Haqqani Network or some other stupid jihad franchise, bringing US troop levels up to somehere around 100,000?

Hmmm.

Are we sending armies to the wrong place?

You bet we are. But we shouldn’t be sinking armies — hundreds of thousands of men and all their necessary stuff — into any one place. And we shouldn’t be nation-building anywhere. It’s time to take a national chill pill and re-think our entire anti-jihad strategy. Or, rather, finally conceive of an anti-jihad strategy in the first place. Entrenching our military in the far flung reaches of the Islamic world is a losing tactic against the jihad networks in place not just in Afghaninstan or Pakistan, but everywhere, from Yemen to Your Town, all united by a belief in extending islamic law.

Onto Afghanistan.

Yes, you are so correct, that’s why a 23 year old, Nigerian, upper middle class kid, with no ax to grind, decides to put a bomb in his drawers, and blow his junk off. What was it we did to Nigeria to warrant this? What did WE do to him? NOTHING!

Read the Frikking Koran, their hatred for us is simple, we will not bow to the will of Allah, they hate us because they HATE anything and everything that is not like them. If you succumb to their will, you will be allowed to live, break their laws, you die, because they are such a tolerant Religion. Look at the hero’s of Islam, they all carry swords, why?

Wake up! These peaceful people wish to either control you, or kill you, there are no grey areas here, wake up! They have no shortage of excuses as to why they act as they do. Fix all of the perceived wrongs, and they will still kill you! They get what they want, or else!

Is it that hard for you to grasp the concept? They do not think as we do, we see negotiation as strength, they see it as weakness. They will negotiate, then cut off your head when convenient for them. Arafat should be all of the proof needed.

Let’s be real. These people hate us because they are screwed up in the head and their lives are hell. Their countries are poor, run by dictators and despots, and inhabited by people who have no freedom. They look at America, see freedom and prosperity, and cannot help but hate.

Blaming us for any attacks – from 9/11 all the way on down to Pearl Harbour (and, presumably, you all blame Poland for having Germany invade it, correct?) – is the dumbest form of victim-blaming around. Oddly enough, the only time in which the left does not blame the victim (See, robbery, attractive nuisance doctrine, unborn children, murderers, etc.) is when the “victim” actually had some power over the situation. Give the Left a dumb coed who got blind drunk at a frat party and they’ve found themselves a person above reproach; give them a sovereign nation under hostile attack and all of a sudden, it’s our fault.

Dumb beyond belief.

Coakley is wrong. There are 8 to 10 terrorists left:

“An assessment by France’s highly regarded Paris Institute of Political Studies [suggests that] Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda has likely been reduced to a core group of eight to ten terrorists who are on the run more often than not.”

The timing on this was rather poor, considering the deaths of eight CIA officers in Afghanistan just ten days ago at the hands of a suicide bomber.

Killing CIA is terrorism? I guess killing US troops is also terrorism. I think we should define this word.

TTheoLogan on January 13, 2010 at 3:53 AM

Most muslims I have had contact with in this country are nice to your face bcs their holy book allows them to lie & enter into false contracts with unbelievers.
Meanwhile, they holy book demands that they plan in secret for the day that they attack (when they reach sufficient strength) those infidels they live among in order to convert them, force them live in subjugation, or DIE.
So Dean, even if Muslims that you know appear peaceful, they may be plotting either physically, or secretly in their hearts, causing as much trouble as they can bcs that is what their ‘religion’ tells them to do:establish a worldwide caliphate through FORCE.

Badger40 on January 13, 2010 at 1:55 PM

And honestly, I bet there are some peaceful muslims out there. It’s not like she should be trashing the ones who are minding their own business & assimilating into this country lawfully.
But they aren’t orthodox in following their own religion.
Which makes them apostate to other orthodox muslims.
Not a pleasant fate awaits these people.
Muslims have not done a very good job cleaning up after their messy violent brethren.
I wonder why that is?
