Video: Record-breaking “cold snap” hits nation

posted at 10:55 am on January 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The year so far looks like a bad one for advocates of anthropogenic global warming. Despite the lack of progress on imposing global restrictions on the emission of carbon dioxide, the Earth has hit a cooling trend. Temperatures have plunged to record lows across the US, freezing crops and threatening a big hike in heating-oil prices in the Northeast. MS-NBC reports on the damage already felt in Georgia and Florida, two states used to having warmer winters:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

How can this be happening if man-emitted CO2 creates a greenhouse effect that amplifies warming? One set of scientists predicted the cold weather this year, and says that AGW hysterics misread multi-decadal oscillations as a permanent trend — and that cooler weather will be the norm for the next 20 to 30 years:

The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world’s most eminent climate scientists.

Their predictions – based on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans – challenge some of the global warming orthodoxy’s most deeply cherished beliefs, such as the claim that the North Pole will be free of ice in
summer by 2013.

According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, Arctic summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles, or 26 per cent, since 2007 – and even the most committed global warming activists do not dispute this. …

Prof Latif, who leads a research team at the renowned Leibniz Institute at Germany’s Kiel University, has developed new methods for measuring ocean temperatures 3,000ft beneath the surface, where the cooling and warming cycles start.

He and his colleagues predicted the new cooling trend in a paper published in 2008 and warned of it again at an IPCC conference in Geneva last September.

Last night he told The Mail on Sunday: ‘A significant share of the warming we saw from 1980 to 2000 and at earlier periods in the 20th Century was due to these cycles – perhaps as much as 50 per cent.

‘They have now gone into reverse, so winters like this one will become much more likely. Summers will also probably be cooler, and all this may well last two decades or longer.

Note that Latif isn’t exactly a total skeptic of AGW, but believes that the warming trends that AGW hysterics exploit were mainly temporary fluctuations. And this winter appears to bear him out.

If “global warming” was the reason for the left to push government control over everything and extortionate taxation, does this mean they owe us smaller government and abolishment of the income tax?

There was a reporter on Fox & Friends this morning who said that the Florida citrus crops are not in danger – yet. As long as the temperature doesn’t drop below 28F, the fruit is OK. In fact, he said, colder temperatures make the fruit sweeter. So if the crops aren’t ruined this year, the fruit should be pretty good.

UltimateBob on January 11, 2010 at 11:31 AM

Strawberries are different from citrus. The blooms are a bit more sensitive and if you lose those, you don’t get fruit. Bad thing is that we won’t know the extent of the damage about a month from now.

Take the extra energy consumption this winter, add the cost of building windmills and carbon taxes. Next year the cost of staying warm will be twice as high.

I love the smell of schadenfreud in the morning. Anytime I complain about the science behind global warming, I’m told that my being a ‘chemist’ doesn’t qualify me to comment on that science. I always had one word for those jerks: EQUILIBRIUM.

What we are seeing now is our planet equilibrating. Increasing temps mean increased water vapor. Water evaporation consumes energy (that’s why sweat cools the body). Even if you eliminate solar activity (which is like climate without weather) the laws of physics are incontrovertible. The planet will equilibrate through cycles of heating and cooling, which is precisely bourne out throughout history.

But what do I know? I aint no stinkin climastrologist.

You have to have no knowledge of history to be a liberal.

Al Gore and his followers will not be pleased

Geophysicist Phil Chapman, the first Australian to become an astronaut with NASA, said pictures from the US Solar and Heliospheric Observatory also show that there are currently no spots on the sun. He also noted that the world cooled quickly between January last year and January this year, by about 0.7C.

“This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and it puts us back to where we were in 1930,” Dr Chapman noted in The Australian recently.

Now this 11-year low in Sunspot activity has raised fears among a small but growing number of scientists that rather than getting warmer, the Earth could possibly be about to return to another cooling period. The idea is especially intriguing considering that most of the world is in preparation for global warming.

The flow of energy is from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. That means the energy concentration of the atmosphere was higher than that of Greenland moving south toward the equator. No different than what we experience today expect that the heat flow is lower or we could still grow grapes in Greenland.

Woah there skippy, you previously said 2009 was one of the hottest years as a fact. Now it is merely a projection. Are these the same “projecters” who worked at the CRU?

More interesting: You struggle to find any reason to doubt warming 1000 years ago, attempting to call it regional change whereas you find any reason possible to support warming today, claiming any cold weather is also regional.

In short: It is global warming solely when it is convenient for your argument.

BKennedy on January 11, 2010 at 2:44 PM

The Laws of Thermodynamics are called laws for a reason.

chemman on January 11, 2010 at 1:01 PM

Liberals believe that laws are for other people, not them.

OK, feel free to educate me.

oakland on January 11, 2010 at 12:54 PM

You can lead a dork to knowledge, but you can’t make him think.

MarkTheGreat on January 11, 2010 at 2:48 PM

From everything I’ve seen, global warming has zip to do with your local temps. In fact, fluctuations in local temps supports global warming concerns.

It has everything to do with the melting of the ice caps, and that’s still happening.

I think cap-and-trade is a stupid idea. It’s a tax, not a solution.

I think ignoring global warming as “baloney” is equally stupid.

Just my 2 cents.

oakland on January 11, 2010 at 1:24 PM

This is only true if you look at the now discredited CRU/NASA data, which is itself not real data, but rather an unspecified subset of real data that has been adjusted through super secret methods to a point where even their own mothers would no longer be able to recognize them.

If you look at reliable data, the last decade has been cool and is continuing to cool.

AnninCA on January 11, 2010 at 2:51 PM

Antarctic was never melting, in fact it is continuing to get colder down there.
Arctic melting was a one year event that has completely reversed itself.

You really do like to cling to your myths, don’t you.

MarkTheGreat on January 11, 2010 at 2:59 PM

See? These kind of _accurate_ predictions are what you get when you use _real_ science.

Hills in IL??? I think the tallest hill in Il might be a land fill on the south side of Chicago.

WashJeff on January 11, 2010 at 11:17 AM

Yep. In southern Ilinois. And I have the Hillbilly accent to prove it.

http://www.thom.org/photos/ILGGgods.jpg (This is at Garden of the Gods in southeastern Illinois. I have a photograph that I shot at about the same spot. I counted 30-some Goblin “faces” in these rock formations. Of course, the formation in the back is called Camel Rock)

http://users.midwestmail.com/nightlife/cdalerocks/treasures/03zLaRueB.jpg (This picture is from “Inspiration Point” in southwestern Illinois. From there you can see across the Mississippi River into Missouri. Down the other side of this ridge of hills is a spring that has the sweetest water I have ever drank.)

http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2982711500033402703DymgHj
(This is the Little Grand Canyon. I had a cabin a good morning’s hike from there. At the top of this climb used to be a Ranger lookout tower. I tore it down in the ’70s. The foundation to it may still be there. I haven’t been back there in about 25 years.)

Southern Illions is a whole ‘nuther place from the rest of flat featureless Illinois and ChiTown.

AnninCA on January 11, 2010 at 2:51 PM

Honey, you are right when you say the ice caps are melting…they melt away some ice most every year…now finish the sentence.
The ice is melting, but more ice is forming, there is a greater mass this year then last, ice has been building on the ice caps for decades.
That’s like saying the ice is melting in your glass, as your ice machine is producing ice…yes, it is melting, but more ice is being made.
You know all those dramatic pictures of calving? Yeah, more ice is there…now poor a little something on those melting ice cubes and relax…

For the trolls who don’t understand how climate works, please visit Watts Up With That? and educate yourself.

Anthony Watts provides all of the information you could ever want, along with the real charts and data to back it up.

The link is to a graph representing 10,000 years of temperature data (mostly from ice cores). As you can see, the warmer temps from the last decade are a barely visible blip in the annals of history. Also note the huge, long-term ice ages. Cold seems to be more of the norm for the planet than warm and cold is NOT conducive for the advancement of life, including humans. Far more people die, and species go extinct in the cold from starvation and disease.

It’s probably no accident that the great age of human exploration was during the Medieval Warm Period.

Keep your two cents…

According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, Arctic summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles, or 26 per cent, since 2007 – and even the most committed global warming activists do not dispute this.

This is the opposite of what I have read. The overwhelming amount of info is that the last decade was cooler than the previous one.

From the source that you cite above…

December 2009 had the fourth-lowest average ice extent for the month since the beginning of satellite records, falling just above the extent for 2007. The linear rate of decline for December is now 3.3% per decade

Don’t get these liberals started on global cooling-then we’ll go back to the 70′s and 80′s with talks of SNOW BLITZES where the Amazon rain forest will be covered with 100 feet of ice and polar bears will be patrolling the streets Singapore. The same carbon dioxide, currently blamed for golbal warming, will be accused of blocking out the sun’s rays. Worse yet, Al Gore will become a billionaire selling portable heaters to tropical Africa.

AnninCA on January 11, 2010 at 2:51 PM

Sigh.
Please leave scientific thinking to those who are more prepared for it.
There is no data out there that has proven that ‘global warming’ is happening.
Even NASA’s temp data sets from the ocean’s surface are in question.
Their temp calculations don’t even take cloud cover into consideration when mapping surface ocean temps.
So from the beginning all this ‘data’ has been suspect.
The slate needs to be wiped clean & a new data set obtained using TRUE scientific methods & principles.
So eat your balonely & keep reading the tabloids.

Typical AGW zealot:
“I went outside today & it was hotter than it was last year-ergo we have global warming!”
