Video: Coulter, Sharpton square off over Reid remarks

posted at 8:48 am on January 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Jim Hoft says that Ann Coulter ate Al Sharpton’s lunch in this clip, but Sharpton keeps fighting all the way to the end of this conversation … where Coulter’s last zinger pretty much stuns Sharpton into a silent scowl.  Sharpton keeps asking which Republican the Democrats have gone after for latent racism — and while Coulter misses the chance to say it, an entire nation of Tea Party activists certainly were clearing their throats:

He can’t be serious in arguing that the only Republican or conservative demagogued as a racist in the past ten years has been Trent Lott, can he?  That attack is Sharpton’s stock in trade.  He’d be unemployed without it.

Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson launches his new website, The Daily Caller, with this report on Reid’s chances — as seen by Democrats on Capitol Hill:

The first signs of abandonment from within Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s own party emerged Sunday, as some Democrats said his racially charged comments about President Obama have placed his already perilous reelection prospects on the precipice.

“He’s in deep trouble, I think,” said one senior aide to a member of the House Democratic leadership. “Even with the apology, no matter what it’s a negative thing. There are a lot of minorities that vote [in Nevada].”

Asked whether lawmakers who are next in line to be majority leader – such as Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, or Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois – would begin to target Reid, the senior Democrat said there would be no point.

“Why throw more gas on the fire when he appears to be going down anyway?” the aide said.

Another senior House Democratic leadership aide described his reaction when he learned of Reid’s comments: “My jaw dropped.”

I doubt that Coulter’s prediction will have a chance to come true.  At some point, Reid will take the advice of Markos Moulitsas and clear the field for another Democrat to attempt to hold the seat.  However, Nevada is not Connecticut.  Another Democrat won’t get front-runner status simply by showing up.  Nevadans are more conservative and aren’t likely to take a test drive with a new Democrat, not after two years of the radical Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda.

The point which everyone, including Ann fell into, is letting these race baiters control the argument. They wish to show that this is a simple slip of the tongue that a simple apology will fix. But if you dwelve deeper into Reid’s statement, it is much more vile than a simple offensive statement giving insight into how the Elite view America. Because of his ‘light skinned’ color the unwashed masses will vote for him because it makes them feel good but doesn’t raise their racist stereotypes of how the masses view African Americans. The second part of the statement (Negro Dialect) explains that President Obama can change his dialect to speak ‘Black’ to those who wish to see him express his stereotypical ‘African’ side.If one looks into this statement it not only shows how Democrats view the electorate but also, Reid is calling Obama a phony.

b) I see Guh-raldo the mustache, well known mysogenist and illegal aiien supporter sitting next to him! I refuse to grant Mr. Spitter ANY airtime!

anyone who opposes obama has been called racist. obama supporters worked so hard to lable anyone who went after obama as racist, they even attacked the Clintons and cartoons depicting Pelosi and Congress as a monkey. Sharpton went after Imus and Rush for his football bit… too bad ann couldn’t throw some of those out.

The clip wasn’t what I expected.
Conservatives have to stop letting the left set the context of debates and allow them to repeat the same old sermons and let everything get presented on the playing ground of moral equivalency. There are no objective standards in the relativist tactic of debate, so there is alway a intellectual alley to dart into and a verbal garbage can to hide behind.

I think the best strategy is to not demand that Reid resign. Let the dems think he is forgiven and then when it gets closer to election time, regurgitate it with full force. That and everything else that he has done will ensure that he loses.

Of course, the lefty spin machine is spewing Op-Eds claiming that everyone thinks what cracka-ass-cracka Sen. Harry Reid says is true but they won’t talk about it.

I agree that he should not resign..why hide the rotting albatross??
I dis agree with the idea of regurgitating it later. That would just give the dems a chance to play the ‘petty’ card, and why open the door of distraction for them. The people who can’t stand reid will not vote for him and the blind leftie supporters will not vote against him. Its the undecided that will hear all other things he says through the filter of his phoniness. Lets not wear a whole in that filter and give the progressives the opportunity to later claim that any other things that may come up are just another example of pettiness by the conservatives.
These progressive leftie zealots are so wrong on so many things, that it is not necessary to cling to one thing. Keep moving forward.

ConservativeTony on January 11, 2010 at 11:14 AM

This should not be dropped. The Dems must once and for all be made accountable for their double standard on race (also everything else, but we can start with race). Republicans are constantly called rascists for any and everything (like not being for the healthcare bill, etc.)when the left are the ones who focus on race.

the easy crack is that Harry deserves some time in a “racial sensitivity” class, but seriously where does this end? And where is Holder, he who seeks a serious discussion on race? I despise Reid, but he really didnt say anyhting that was not true. Clumsily worded perhaps, but that is not a crime except in our brave new world of PC.

Alinsky’s Rule #4: Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.

This is where the heat gets put on Reid and other liberals who make racial statements. Make them live up to their rules as being “the open minded ones” when it comes to race and diversity. The liberals and democrats follow this rule all the time when a republican is caught having an affair or other sexual scandal. The libs love to show when the party of “morals” don’t live up to their beliefs.

Racial remarks are the liberals weak point. Time to hit them hard about it.

Mallard T. Drake on January 11, 2010 at 1:08 PM

I heard some leftist on ABC radio equate Reid’s comment with Lott’s, then she reminded the listeners that Lott stepped down over his racial comments.

Are they giving Reid an out? Anybody else hear similar comments from the left?

Anyway, interesting ploy the left is attempting here. Reid was about to lose his seat anyway, but now he can resign beforehand and blame it on his racism instead of what he’s done to push through Obamacare.

ConservativeTony on January 11, 2010 at 1:10 PM

Reid has been in trouble with reelection for awhile now. This is just pile-on time. “There are no friends in DC.”

What’s funny to me, anyway, is that absolutely everyone knows his remarks are the truth.

I don’t really know about the “light-skin” part of the remark, but the ability to articulate without dialect? Definitely that was and is a factor.

I worried about that for awhile. Not anymore, actually. I wondered if the AA minority was truly prepared for the backlash, and it was bound to come. It has. It’s not racially oriented. It’s politically oriented.

Obama is far-left in his grounding. It’s just different. Most people aren’t comfortable with that perspective. It’s not awful, in my opinion. It’s just “far.”

I’m not comfortable with “far” right. I’m probably like the majority of people….middling.

An African-American caller says he believes what Harry said is true; Harry’s culture and upbringing led him to express the thought in the manner he did.

Rush countered by saying that the comment may or may not be true, but Reid got away with saying it because he is a Democrat. No one is arguing about how true the comment is; culturally speaking, that is up to each person to decide. It’s the double-standard that is the issue, and no Republican lawmaker would ever get away with that and keep his seat.

The moonbat marching orders have been delivered. Attack! I love when liberals are stupid enough to put themselves on the defensive. Dems pull the race card and use character assassination as intimidation tactics all the time. It’s great to see how implode when those tactics come back to haunt them.

No, no Ann. He should have never had a visa. The state department misspelled his name, and thus he was never declined the visa. That’s the crux of it all.

Hillary is skating on this one, in a big way. That buck hasn’t stopped, yet.

We’ll see. He was the son of a prominent member of the community. He was doing work for the CIA. I really don’t think the State department is culpable here, other than the system doesn’t “move” instantly when a family member raises a red flag.

That could cut both ways.

Harry Reid is speaking about The Comment. What could possibly go wrong?

I didn’t think she “ate his lunch”. She held her own but so did he. He is much louder and obnoxious than she is. She couldn’t be heard. And he asks what other Republican have Democrats gone after other than Lott for supposed racism? Are you kidding me?????? Only every one of us who voted Republican in the last election. Millions of Republicans have the Democrats tried to silence by calling them racist.
Someone at Fox turn off Sharpton’s mike next time, will ya?

Can’t we add George Allen to the list of Republicans that were taken down by charges of racism. Wasn’t it some nonsense about using the word Macaca (sp?) or some thing that was supposed to prove he was a racist?

–Allen called an Indian-looking guy who worked for his opponent in a crowd near the Kentucky border a “macca”, which–appart for being a really unuaual word–is a racial slur against asians and then said he had no idea what the word meant. Why would Allen use a unusual word and then say he didn’t know what it meant? That seems to be much closer to calling someone a “N***er”.
