TSA nominee: Global warming deserves parity with war on terror

posted at 11:36 am on January 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

David Freddoso thinks the takeaway from this interview of Errol Southers, the embattled Obama nominee to run TSA, is his observation that our alliance with Israel is the reason for the acts of terrorism against the US. VideoJug asked Southers where the US should prioritize the war on terror, and he offered a few more thoughts than just about alliances:

Terrorism:
The War On Terror

“Due to connectivity that we have with countries such as Israel, France — countries that are seen by groups, by al Qaeda, as infidels or anti-Islamic — by the true nature of our alliance with them means that we subject to be attacked as well. I do think, however, it deserves to perhaps have some parity with global warming, with education, with the economy, but national security is always going to supercede everything else. I don’t think you can have all of those other entities flourish in a state where the security is not felt to be confident, comfortable, and intact.”

Until he got to priority parity, I think Southers did OK. After all, we know that radical Islamists hate Israel and attack us for our alliance with them. That’s hardly news, and Southers didn’t say that in terms of reassessing our alliance — just that we need to recognize that the alliance makes us a target, and we need to act accordingly. He didn’t try offering the detention center at Guantanamo Bay as a reason the radical Islamists hate us, for example. Maybe he should sit down and have a chat with his boss about that.

However, should a TSA nominee really argue that global warming deserves the same amount of attention and prioritization as the war on terror? Even if we weren’t having a record “cold snap” this winter, the notion that terrorism poses the same or lesser danger than AGW will strike most Americans as ludicrous. The only reason Southers sees for not granting AGW the same priority as terrorism is that a nation that doesn’t feel secure won’t take anything else seriously. That’s a point Southers should have considered before making that foolish statement.

Try asking anyone traveling over the next few weeks whether they think AGW is as high a priority as keeping the next EunuchBomber from actually detonating something more than his own nuts, and see whether they agree with Southers.

Update: Erick Erickson catches another part of the interview where Southers identifies what he sees as the biggest security threat:

But now there is new and far more troubling information about Mr. Southers caught on video. According to Erroll Southers, pro-life Christians and our support of Jews is a bigger threat to national security than Al Qaeda.

Mr. Southers, in 2008, said he was more worried about “Christian identity” terrorist groups inside the U.S. than islamic terrorists. What are “Christian identity” terrorist groups? White-supremacists naturally. The KKK. And the Southern Baptist Convention.

Southers identifies pro-life groups and anti-government activists as particular problems.

Terrorism:
Terrorist Groups

To be fair, the question was posed as “which home-grown terrorist groups present the greatest danger to the US”.  I’m not sure one can fault him for the answer in that context.  The “anti-abortion” comment does seem gratuitous, however, considering the rest of the qualifiers Southers uses which reflect poisonous ideology: xenophobes, anti-Semitic, anti-government.

Wrong, Ed. The Islamists are not against us because we support Israel. It is more likely that the Islamist are against Israel because of Israel’s consistent support for us. Second, the fact is that the US is not all that supportive of Israel. Truman gave the go ahead for modern Israel statehood, but then Eisenhower was a total Arabist. During the Six Day war we were pretty much neutral, Nixon sent Israel arms during the 1973 war, but that was as a proxy against the USSR. Ford, Carter, Bush 41…no one could say they leaned towards Israel. W began being somewhat supportive but then Condi et al went totally Arabist and compared Arabs to blacks in the US, when the fact is that it is more likely the opposite. Obama is as bad or even worse than Carter and Bush 41 and we still this BS about being fair to both sides. In what other situation are we asked to be as fair to the terrorist as to the victims of terroism. As for the media, NPR is a vitual polemic against the Jews, the mainstreams portray the Arabs as victims even though they have all the oil and 22 states and 98.5% of the territory, as well as the entire UN sponsoring terror campaigns. Even Foxnews is clearly more supportive if the Arabs; Glen Beck and O’Reilly are happy to give forums to Jews haters like Michael Scheuer.

No, I think you have this one wrong.

Ok, VideoJug updated the video or something. The takeaway clip is now at the end of the clip. Keep in mind that this comes after he just defined Al Qaeda. Here is the transcript of video:

Are there groups inside the United States that pose danger to our security?

Domestically speaking, a large part, most of the groups we have here in the United States, are white supremacists groups. World Church of the Creator, National Alliance, Aryan Nations, there are some black separatist groups. What’s interesting about those groups is you find that they are usually either Christian identity groups and/or groups that really have a foothold in our correctional or prison systems in the way of radicalization and recruiting.

Most of the domestic groups that we have to pay attention to here are white supremacist groups. They’re anti-government and in most cases anti-abortion. They are usually survivalist type in nature, identity orientated. If you recall, Buford Furrow came to Los Angeles in, I believe it was 1999. When he went to three different Jewish institutions, museums, and then wound up shooting people at a children’s community center, then shooting a fellow penal postal worker later on. Matthew Hale who’s the Pontifex Maximus of the World Church of the Creator out of Illinois and Ben Smith who went on a shooting spree in three different cities where he killed a number of African Americans and Jews and Asians that day. Those groups are groups that claim to be extremely anti-government and Christian identity oriented.

Ahem, excuse me Mr. Southers. Due to connectivity of your cranial matter firmy rooted inside your rectal cavity, you pose a danger not only to yourself, but the entire western world as well.

If you were even mimally informed, to what the Islamists themselves freely admit, that anti-Islamic is defined anyone that is not Islamic! Therefore, the very survival of the western world is dependent upon “associating”…nay, allying with those that refuse the yolk of Dhimmitude.

It is The West and everything associate with it, that the Obama administration has a problem with freedom of capital, freedom of choice, freedom from oppressive regulation, basically anything associated with gains made by The Great Enlightenment. Ayn Rand had it exactly right, the collectivist’s every move is in the direction of slavery and servitude.

“It only stands to reason that where there’s sacrifice, there’s someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there’s service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.”

katy on January 11, 2010 at 1:00 PM

Oh, this guy is good – for Skippy’s agenda, that is.

Taking apart what this guy says (quite eloquently, btw), is fairly dispturbing – but his delivery is the key – he’s able to package it so that he ‘sounds’ reasonable.

Offering the opinion that the Islamists hate us because of who we’re friends with? Hardly – they hate us because of our system, our freedom, that we ARE the infidels – and the most extreme among them will carry this hatred unless or until the entire US (and the rest of the non-Islamic world) is submitted or subjected to sharia – regardless of who we make nice with. Citing any other ‘root cause’ or ‘irritant’ is delusional, plain and simple.

Nice trick of conflating political talking point terms to compare apples to radial bias ply tires – the ‘war on terror’ to the ‘war on drugs’ – with the only thing the two even remotely have in common being that the Taliban has figured out that the use of incoherent policies on drugs can be very useful to raise money to finance their activities in Afghanistan, and that by extension, Al Qaeda can use some of those funds, co-mingled with other sources of revenue, to finance jihad, which hopes to take advantage of incoherent anti-terrorism measures. . .

The biggest clue this guy is just simply tossing dollar bill sized phrases, instead of really demonstrating a command of the issues just using direct, 10 cent words, is when he reacts to the rorsach question of ‘priorities’ – throwing out the climate ‘priority’ during a string of other ‘feel good’ ‘priority’ phrases, before finally coming back around to the politically correct ‘security trumps all’ position – he might as well have been discussing the relative merits of ‘rock’ versus ‘paper’ versus ‘scissors’.

Yeah, he’s a well educated, good sounding, complete and utter moron. He’s learned how to navigate and operate within the beauracratic system, and likely not much else – absolutely nothing that came out of that man’s mouth in any way, shape or form gave me any comfort whatsoever about his potential ability to actually ‘lead’ an effective operation to protect our nation’s transportation networks from assault and disruption by radical Islamists.

Put this guy in place, and the only thing we can count on is that WHEN the next attack occurs, there will be someone around to make Janet Napolitano look good in the aftermath.

Wind Rider on January 11, 2010 at 1:00 PM

Al in St. Lou on January 11, 2010 at 1:01 PM

Both Al Gore and John Kerry are on record claiming that Global Warmin/ Climate Change is a bigger source of terror than jihadi terrorism (not that they would use the latter expression).

A bigger problem with this fellow is that he hasn’t a clue re what is threatening our transportation safety. He is looking everywhere but at the statistical evidence of the past “successful” and unsuccessful attempt to wreak havoc through our transportation network.

In the Horowitz/Caddell video floating around, Caddell said that the FBI had/has been told to waive security vetting on most of the staff surrounding the Obama WH. Caddell recalls how thorough was his own screening when he had but a peripheral connection to the WH in earlier times. That breech of protocol in the Obama administration needs to be made a huge issue.

Ed:

“However, should a TSA nominee really argue that global warming deserves the same amount of attention and prioritization as the war on terror?”

Should Ed Morrissey really misrepresent a TSA nominee’s remarks?

The interview as a whole may suggest otherwise, but for someone who believes that global warming is not a sham, the comment you quoted is actually a classic conservative position, i.e., there are other compelling issues out there, but they are all superseded by security, without which you have nothing.

It’s Southers’ skewed assessment of what does, in reality, constitute a threat that is alarming. It’s the logical fallacy inherent in the argument that if a militant extremist is anti-government, then anyone who is anti-government is a potentially militant extremist. At the same time, however, that proposition is almost indistinguishable in many ways from the argument that all Muslims represent an existential threat, requiring heightened scrutiny and systemic preventatives.

While ignoring the pattern of Islamic extremism is politically correct insanity, and erring on the side of caution is plain good sense, the idea that profiling is a simple, easily implemented approach to security concerns is myopic. A lot of oxen will be gored, and effectiveness will require bureaucratic and law enforcement intrusions on everyone’s privacy interests. Outrage over the oft cited screening of nuns and children at airport checkpoints is typically misdirected. If they don’t suffer the same indignities that everyone else does, the next explosives will be sewn into an impostor’s habit.

There’s a lot of knee jerking going around on all sides here. I think Southers is a lousy, possibly dangerous, nominee. I also think your emphasis on his attitude to global warming represents some misplaced priorities too.

hawksruleva on January 11, 2010 at 5:39 PM

For those who are not familiar with the Christian Identity movement, it might be worth noting that the Christian Identity movement is very different from Christianity. Simply put, “Christian Identity” is not Christian. (This means, for example, that when someone speaks about “Christian Identity,” they are not speaking about the Southern Baptist Convention.)

For more information, see the books “Race Over Grace: The Racist Religion of the Christian Identity Movement” by Charles H. Roberts and “Religion and the Racist Right: The Origins of the Christian Identity Movement” by Michael Barkun. For a Christian perspective on race, see the book “From Every People and Nation: A Biblical Theology of Race” by J. Daniel Hays. For one denomination’s brief response to the Christian Identity movement, see http://www.lcms.org/graphics/assets/media/CTCR/Christian%20Identity%20Movement.pdf

Having said that, while it is reasonable to be concerned about the hate and violence associated with the Christian Identity movement, it is clear that Islamic terrorism is the major terrorist threat we face. (And I would certainly agree that the reference to abortion in the nominee’s comments was unnecessary and unhelpful.)

The main point I’m trying to make is that when people speak about the dangers of “Christian Identity,” they are not attacking Christianity. To repeat myself, the Christian Identity movement is not Christian.

Global warming is a hoax as everyone KNOWS. The hoax was revealed by way of a raft of CRU emails showing the “experts” doctored the data and tried to cover up the hoax.

Now it is being reported (article on FNC today) some experts think we may be in for a mini ice age:

Mr Southers apparently didn’t get the memo that the hoax was exposed either.

Tell this genius that all carbon based life forms are a hazard to the environment.
He’ll believe it.

What does it take to qualify a group as “domestic terrorists” and why don’t the violent inner-city gangs qualify? Every major city in this country has a gang war underway to some extent. Why does every politiciam turn a blind eye?
IMHO It’s definitely terrorism, because it has changed people’s behaviors such that they are terrified to travel through certain neighborhoods. Property is destroyed, defaced and devalued due to these groups operations. How is that not terrorism?

Even if the US can avoid violence from Islamists, White Supremacists and Christian pro-lifers, we still lose the WOT as long as inner city violence continues to make our cities war zones.

The Transportation Safety Administration has nothing to do with the points you bring up.

Where did ANYONE, even the low-rent dim-bulb bama, dig up this irrelevant, ignorant and inept piece of shiz??? Truly an embarrassment to his race and species!!!

jgdp on January 11, 2010 at 7:10 PM

Southers and Gore should be locked up in the same nut house. How rediculous that anyone who is being considered for a security function can put a real threat and a hoax together as national priorities.

RobCon on January 11, 2010 at 7:25 PM

The sheer fact that this guy compares pro-lifers in this manner proves he is INSANE.

That may be, but my comments are on-point to the question in this video “Are there groups inside the US that pose a dnager to our security?” Let’s see: well-armed, organized , recruiting more youths to the cause, how are gangs not homegrown terrorists? For most of us there’s a higher likeliehood of being victimized by regular old street thugs than by AQ or KKK.

You mean the same Fox News Channel (the ONLY news channel that) that constantly reports on Radical Islam? The one run by Roger Ailes?

Are you serious?
