He did it: Brown raises $500,000 in single day, now pushing for $750,000; Update: Brown hits $750K, now pushing for $1M

posted at 4:50 pm on January 11, 2010 by Allahpundit

Not a 50-megaton moneybomb of the sort Ron Paul detonated two years ago, but then that was a national race and Paul wasn’t battling the deep blue tide of Massachusetts. They started the day asking for $500,000; they crossed that line a little after 4 p.m. ET and are pushing on now to three-quarters of a mil. In the past half hour or so, they’ve raised roughly $20,000. If you can spare it, get out that credit card and go make some headlines.

Two interesting footnotes about the state of play right now. First, an aide from the DNC is headed to Massachusetts to lend Coakley a hand, but The One himself has decided to take a pass this time. Is that because they know victory’s in hand and don’t need him on the trail, or is it because they think victory’s not in hand and the White House doesn’t want to repeat the humiliation of Obama stumping for losers like Corzine and Deeds on their way to defeat? Second, much more mysteriously, why are Democrats leaking internal polls showing Coakley with a big lead? Presumably it’s an attempt to depress conservative turnout and donations by making them think Brown can’t win, but (a) nothing’s going to calm the excitement after that PPP poll over the weekend, as today’s moneybomb is demonstrating, and (b) there’s a risk that the internal poll will make Democratic voters complacent that victory is in the bag, which is precisely what Brown needs to keep them away from the polls. I don’t get why they’d release it.

Exit question: Being as realistic as I can, if I had to set the line right now, I’d say Coakley by seven. Bets?

Update: As of 4:53 ET, they’re over $625,000. Three-quarters of a million is a fait accompli. Do I hear a cool mil?

Update: A good point from DrewM via Twitter: If Coakley’s victory was in the bag, Obama probably would go up there to campaign so that he could claim a victory for himself after the Deeds/Corzine debacles.

Update: The sky’s the limit: At 6:45 ET, they’ve got $790,000 and change in the bank.

Nobody was more pessimistic than me at the start of this. I thought the fix was in. I didn’t think the people of MA would rise to the occasion. I WAS DEAD WRONG and I am thrilled to death to admit it. People are excited and motivated and Scott is the perfect candidate striking the perfect tone while Coakley is the worst possible Candidate striking the worst possible tone. She is the worst candidate the Dems could have put up. In short, HE CAN WIN!

TheBigOldDog on January 11, 2010 at 9:01 PM

I can confirm this. Even thought of responding to some of your posts. However, you were not wrong, more likely reluctant to believe that it could happen. There are a lot of people here in MA that finally have the chance to make a difference on the national level. Too often here, many feel it is a futile fight against the Democrat machine and stay home, knowing their vote will not be counted anyway. Forty years of brow-beating can do a number on an electorate’s collective motivation. (For outsiders, we’ve even had statewide referendums pass by 70% -30%, only to have the Democrat- controlled state legislature deny the will of the people.)

As I have mentioned in other threads (and to every person of voting age I meet daily here in MA), BROWN CAN WIN! Repeat, BROWN CAN WIN! A line has been drawn in the sand and the not-so-silent majority will turn out in force to make a stand.

Glad to have you aboard BigDog!

BO doesn’t show up because he doesn’t help the cause, he’d just energizes the conservative vote. Second, he can help them cheat from where he sits and avoid getting stained by the whole thing.
ClanDerson on January 11, 2010 at 5:55 PM

How about this: Deval Patrick was the candidate touted as being Barack-like before Obama ran for the Presidency. If I remember reading about this correctly, Governor Patrick hasn’t been too popular with Massachusetts voters in recent months. So the Coakley camp might not appreciate having both Patrick and his doppelgänger “assisting” her campaign. Pure speculation, mind you.

Since by the Grace of God I remain gainfully employed, I tossed $550 into the kettle earlier today via the Brown campaign website because the moneybomb site wasn’t responding. Mentioned HotAir, just as I did about 10 days ago for an earlier contribution.

I don’t see a downside, no matter what the outcome. First, I think Brown will pull this off and win by 3% (number arrived at via a Stetson extraction). If the Massachusetts Governor and Secretary of State delay certification for specious reasons, they’ll outrage the conservative base and further energize them to fight to win in the coming months. Should he lose (and I don’t think he will), wouldn’t nearly all of us who post here admit that today’s effort and next week’s vote will keep up the “skeer” in the statists’ camp? Are we not jazzed right now?

Cue the eeyores…

Amazing fundraising. I think this is how it’s going to go in the elections. The RNC and the DNC will not see big coffers. Instead, individual candidates will receive directly if they are decent and have a real shot.

That’s actually OK, except it nationalizes state elections. That’s the one thing I still don’t like.

I trust people in their own states with their own representatives.

I think they should be the ones to back, support, deny, etc.

I’m not a huge states-rights person, but I am on this level. I thought politicizing Alaska nationally was crazy. I think people outside of CA don’t get CA. I trust that’s the same with every state.

I sort of hate to see every state election nationalized. That’s all.

Funny thing, in better times the people on this forum would be calling him a RINO

No, I don’t think so. Even we conservatives can see that in a solid blue state, you can’t have a solid conservative on every issue and win. It’s a question of what things and how much you are willing to compromise to win.

For instance, Scozza… (forget her name) in NY’s special election was left of Harry Ried. What would be the point of electing her as a republican? Certainly, there had to be other republicans who are at least right of center on issues that could have run.

That was a clear case of abandoning ALL principals to win an election. But what would have been the point of that? She would have voted with the dems on every single issue. How does that help the GOP at all? And, she probably would have switched parties after a short time.

The problem with the “moderate” win-at-all cost approach that the party-first people always push is that there is no point in that. Yes, compromises have to be made in politics. But “compromise” does not entail abandoning every single principal to win, which is often what the more ardent party-firsters want us to do.
