Video: Steele calls for Reid’s resignation as Majority Leader

posted at 11:26 am on January 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

To borrow a phrase from my esteemed partner in blogging: Second look at Michael Steele?

Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele Sunday called on Majority Leader Harry Reid to step down as majority leader, becoming the first high-profile Republican to make such a call after the Nevada senator apologized for his assessment of Barack Obama as a “light-skinned” African-American who lacked a “Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

“The reality of it is this, there is this standard where Democrats feel they can say these things and apologize as long as it comes from one of their own,” Steele said on “Fox News Sunday,” equating Reid’s comments with the racially charged ones that led to the outster of Former Republican Leader Trent Lott. “And if it comes from somebody else, it’s racism.”

“Remember this is a leader who only a few weeks ago was using the context of slavery to talk about health care,” said Steele, the first African American head of the RNC. “It’s an old mindset when you are using language in 2008 that harkens back to the 1950s.”

Whether or not Harry Reid resigns as majority leader is almost immaterial at this point, except inside the Beltway. The rush to forgive Reid by Barack Obama, Al Sharpton, and Eleanor Holmes Norton (the DC Representative) was designed to carry Reid past this controversy in the first few days. Reid has much bigger problems in Nevada, where even the forgiveness of Steven Horsford, the African-American state Senate Majority Leader, came with a big caveat of “disappointment,” as Politico reports:

Nevada Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford (D), a key African-American figure in Reid’s home state, also said he would accept the apology, although he was “disappointed” with the comments.

“While I am disappointed in Senator Reid’s comment and choice of words, I accept his apology,” Horsford said. “I have known Senator Reid for many years and he has consistently been supportive of advancing the interests of the African American community as he has for all Nevadans and all Americans.”

That’s the sound of Reid losing the rest of the Democrats in Nevada. He’s toast, and he may wind up getting pushed out the way Chris Dodd did, regardless of his desire to fight to the closing bell in November.

All of this “forgiveness” makes it very clear that Democrats have applied a double standard to Reid, compared to their outrageous outrage over Trent Lott’s stupid remarks in 2002. They claim that Reid’s comments aren’t as bad as endorsing a segregationist candidate fifty-four years after the fact, but that misses a couple of key points. First, Lott — while certainly foolish for not considering the implications of his birthday-party toast to Strom Thurmond — didn’t endorse segregation in his remarks. Reid talked about the tone of Obama’s skin color, and assumed that Obama would be a great candidate because he’d be able to fake what Reid considers a “Negro dialect.” Reid’s statement was much more explicit than Lott’s, and its antecedent falls more along the lines of Al Campanis — who got hounded out of baseball for one really stupid (and obviously racist) remark about the buoyancy of African-Americans despite his track record of helping minorities succeed in his sport.

That brings us back to Michael Steele. The Republicans have a high-profile spokesman who can point out that hypocrisy in the national media and has the undeniable authenticity and access to do so. Regardless of whether he wrote his book with or without permission from the RNC — which is a minor issue in the long run — the GOP is fortunate to have Steele in position to make the Democratic dishonesty on race apparent.

If the Dem leadership wanted to push Reid off the cliff before the election, this would have been the perfect time and opportunity. The fact that they rushed to defend him speak volumes about their strategy. They are riding him to the bitter end.

Lt Col West hit the right tone I think:

The revelation of Senator Harry Reid’s comments referencing “negro talk” is just indicative of the true sentiment elitist liberals, and indeed the Democratic party, have toward black Americans. The history of the Democrat party is one of slavery, secession, segregation, and now socialism. It is this new aged socialism born from the Johnson Great Society programs that have castigated blacks as victims needing government dependency. One need only to look upon the city of Detroit to ascertain what liberal social welfare policies have produced for the inner city…..the new plantation for black Americans.

It goes on. Read the whole thing.

Good job Steele.

joepub on January 10, 2010 at 11:36 AM

Maybe this issue and the public flogging that Steele has taken over the past week will allow the RNC to move forward. Hopefully, Steele has learned that he can have a very powerful roll to play if he stops treating his own team with contempt. In fact I suggest Steele watch that New Domino’s pizza commercial and apply the lessons. Confront your critics head on, don’t doubt their sincerity, and take their concerns seriously.

I saw Steele on FNS (10 am EST). Although he looked a little weak talking about his own intra-party problems, that’s a minor domestic squabble. I go back and forth on Steele. But this morning, I thought he was excellent going after Kaine on the double standard. Kaine just got clobbered. Wallace really needed to intervene and call a TKO. I suspect that Kaine will hear about that, but, in his defense, he was asked by Democrats to defend the indefensible.

Dems and liberals define hypocrisy.

BuckeyeSam on January 10, 2010 at 11:39 AM

At least this administration is consistent. First the lies, then deceptions, followed by the corruption in such a obviously incompetent manner and now undeniable racism even their own lemmings cannot deny. Reid and Peloser are easily the incompetent and corrupt leaders of Congress in this century. It has to make you proud to be a democrat.

volsense on January 10, 2010 at 11:41 AM

1) Harry Reid slipped up and said what he actually thinks.

2) The democrat party has long taken the black vote for granted.

Did you guys see SNL last night with Charles Barkley? Many skits were about racism, with the Macgruber skits being the funniest.

Here’s the first one.

Reid could’ve had a better weekend to have it revealed that he used the words “light skinned” and “negro dialect”.

Weight of Glory on January 10, 2010 at 11:41 AM

the GOP is fortunate to have Steele in position to make the Democratic dishonesty on race apparent.

Yesterday DKos commenters as well had to wrap their brains around Reid’s comment. Obviously some tried to justify it while surprisingly some compared it directly to Lott’s. But a great point I saw brought up there was how, when talking about race, the race of the speaker gets brought up. For example, implicitly I can’t comment on race because I’m white. But the opposite seems to work: Steele is allowed to comment on race relations (or put another way, we’re lucky to have him in this position) explicitly because he’s not white. And that’s just horrible: frank discussion from the Right shouldn’t be the job of only the Steeles (Michael and Shelby), Sowell and Justice Thomas. It should be the responsibility of all of us.

White Democratic party leaders are the real plantation owners.

And black Democratic party leaders are the overseers.

BuckeyeSam on January 10, 2010 at 11:42 AM

I’m of the mind to keep Reid where he is. With him a Majority Leader the GOP conceivably could take the Senate of make serious inroads.

Plus, Chuckie Schumer would probably inherit the position. Do we really want to see him more than we already do?

Weight of Glory on January 10, 2010 at 11:43 AM

Steele needs to show leadership by developing a consistent response for all Republicans and Conservatives to follow on this issue. He needs to develop a game plan to keep this issue active for more than the typical two-day news cycle and work Obama’s 2002 call for Lott’s resignation into every appearance.

PatMac on January 10, 2010 at 11:43 AM

Steele, not so bad, Reid, really bad.

on your closing argument I wholeheartedly agree. Steele is invaluable in that respect. Let’s let the man do his job, he did the right thing on this issue and that earns him forgiveness for his last week of gaffes.

ted c on January 10, 2010 at 11:50 AM

Of course the race baiters, who monopolize the democratic party, are out front deflecting any attempts to have race recognized for what it obviously is in relation to their leadership.

volsense on January 10, 2010 at 11:51 AM

If the RNC meeting with Steele was designed to get on the same page and “remind’ him of his duties, then I suppose he can reluctantly stay.
He better have been told he now has has zero margin for freelancing on his own behalf.
This is too damn important.
Also- keep Reid as majority leader like JWF posted- anyone else might actually turn out to be competent.

I know Mr. Steele has made some cringe worthy remarks but I have to tell you that they have mostly been in venues with a small window of visibility. I know this because people I talk with who are not current events/blog readers are impressed with him. As for calling you senators to get him removed, could you mention that they really shouldn’t vote for a stalker, with access to personal information, to head the TSA while you are at it.

Can only a black person like Steele effectively point out racial hyprocrisy on the part of the Democrats? If we think so, then we’re buying into the racialist bullcrap that the Left has elevated to a high art.

Hypocrisy is hyprocrisy, no matter who calls it.

Cicero43 on January 10, 2010 at 12:01 PM

the GOP is fortunate to have Steele in position to make the Democratic dishonesty on race apparent.

Outside of a few wishful-thinking Repub theoreticians and the bookers of talking heads for weekend political TV — the former group includes you, Ed — Steele’s cred level is slightly below none at all.

Libs (especially black libs) have no time for “What up?” Mike. To the general public, he’s another babbling face on the tube.

Sure, he’s got the affirmative-action thing going for himself — as shown by the headline regarding the “controversy” over booting him out of his well-paying gig because he’s a self-centered incompetent — but when the need for an “authentic” spokesman comes along, he ain’t it.

Steele’s “takin’ it to the Man,” all right. The conservative man. Stack him against Sharpton or any other black lib (or, for that matter, any lib of any color, and he’s just noise.

Funny how just a couple of days ago, most were calling for Steeles resignation, but then he plays the Racial Identity card, and you now all seem to want to keep him…

Steele probably just saved his job for awhile… but did it by doing somthing other than his job…

This is a good question bridgetown—did some one have to give Steele this idea????

While Steele is in “the right place” at the moment, we will still be haunted by his “I’m not sure” comment, when asked if Republicans are ready to lead. We can not afford any more blunders like this. “High-profiles” can work both ways, Mr. Morrissey. The crucial clock is running out quickly on whether to replace Steele. The RNC will need donations in the months ahead, and there’s plenty of conservatives out there who just won’t give to the RNC with Steele in the leadership role. Either he takes on a strong “partner” soon, (Liz Cheney comes to mind), or it’s time to go shopping real soon.

Then again, the excuse for Sheets Byrd is that he isn’t a racist anymore, even when he uses racial epithets.

Its almost like they do give a damn about anything other then political power…

My bet: Dems will defend Reid and let him ram the health care bill through Congress, then they’ll ‘arrange’ for him to step down and out of the re-election race. They’ll salvage Reid’s seat like they salvaged Dodd’s, only they’ll let him finish the health care bill before they do.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for the media to hold Reid accountable for anything. In fact, from what I’ve seen and read, they’re doing everything to excuse and defend him.

Yet another moment of faux outrage from the black community. It’s a reprehensible comment from a politico from the right side, however, when coming out of the mouth of one of their own a simple apology is all that will be necessary to smooth it over. (Allow me to puke)

I find this classic moment in politically correct history to be as serious as blacks becoming outraged as they pontificate the “N” word at one another.

Apparently, everything during this period could be construed as having racial undertones.

I really don’t care much if he is pushing his book, I care a whole lot that he isn’t pushing Amnesty or trying to boost funding for NPR or talking about the need to raise taxes etc etc

And like it or not, he is a signal that things are changing, however imperfectly, within the GOP. He is clearly not a shill for the old guard.

DaMav on January 10, 2010 at 12:41 PM

Taking our cue from Reid and the non-hypocritical Dems, I guess it’s OK to refer to Obama as a Negro President. In fact, the Census uses the term.

Isn’t the logical outcome of all this to refer to the First Family as the Negro First Family?

EMD on January 10, 2010 at 12:42 PM

In all the hubub over Dingy’s remarks, can anyone point out the inaccuracies? Does the President have a light complexion? Does he turn on an “urban black” speaking style for certain audiences?

I can’t help feeling a bit sleazy using the same kind of racial outrage tactics that Dems have perfected. That being said, pointing out their hypocrisy is absolutely correct. Unfortunately, the left’s double standard on racial issues has already been amply documented, and ignored. As long as they keep writing the checks (ACORN etc.) they will get a pass.

if you don’t mind your credibility being lost, sure.

Metro on January 10, 2010 at 12:38 PM

How does anyone lose credibility by calling for all politicians to be treated the same, regardless of party ID?

It’s politics.

Mord on January 10, 2010 at 12:45 PM

“Nuance”. That’s the term the Dems use to cover their hypocrisy.

GarandFan on January 10, 2010 at 12:46 PM

All Reid did was admit that white Democrats are racists who might vote for a black person if his skin is light enough and speaking style is white enough.

Buddahpundit on January 10, 2010 at 12:46 PM

It’s a step in the right direction.

The Democrats are lucky that they are not subject to the same rules that they have imposed on private businesses. If a business had senior executives spouting racist statements (like Senators Biden, Reid, Bird and others), engaging in sexual affairs with subordinates (like President Clinton, Sen. Edwards, etc.), negotiating contracts for their personal benefit to the detriment of their employer (like Sen. Nelson), lying about where money was being spent (like they did with the Medicare money and Social Security money), and generally overspending, cooking the books and deceiving customers and business partners (like the empty promise to televise the healthcare debate), the business would be bankrupt and under indictment for accounting fraud, tax fraud, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, racial discrimination and allowing a sexually hostile work environment. That is the definition of hypocrisy: imposing standards and obligations on other people that you are unable to comply with, that you have no intention of complying with, and which do not even apply to you because you make the rules. The Republicans are just as bad, but for the most part it was not their idea to impose these standards on private businesses.

For the same reason the Dems have no credibility. Reid says this, Dems say “no problem.” Lott says something, Dems say “he must go…”

We’ll see how much credibility Steele has when somebody in GOP slips up. Then we can see how these statements of Steele’s affect his cred. Deal?

Metro on January 10, 2010 at 12:50 PM

He won’t go, but I agree need to call for him to go.

Spirit of 1776 on January 10, 2010 at 12:52 PM

Couple days ago I was kind of down on Steele but have had time to think it over and read this and that since and have decided to go back to my default position which was to give him the benefit of the doubt.(yes, wishy, washy but I make no apology). However where is it written that only black on black or white on white et al can criticize the issues of race. That’s nonsense and what ever happened to color blind. I think this country has made great, great strides on the racial front and is still moving forward with leaps and bounds. Good for us!

Reid talked about the tone of Obama’s skin color, and assumed that Obama would be a great candidate because he’d be able to fake what Reid considers a “Negro dialect.” Reid’s statement was much more explicit than Lott’s, and its antecedent falls more along the lines of Al Campanis — who got hounded out of baseball for one really stupid (and obviously racist) remark about the buoyancy of African-Americans despite his track record of helping minorities succeed in his sport.

superb analysis Ed. The same standard applied to Lott, should be applied to Harry Reid. It was one thing for him to ask forgiveness from the President. It’s an entirely different context for him to be judged within his position by the public.

That’s not what you’re calling for, exactly. You’re calling for an equivalence of stupidity and bad citizenship, i.e., implying that conservatives should abandon their central belief in free speech for the momentary and illusory gratification of behaving like liberals.

You may think this is “just politics” or smart politics or even justice, but it’s not any of those things. It is exactly how NOT to fight the Left.

This was another grand missed opportunity by the boob Steele.

rrpjr on January 10, 2010 at 1:00 PM

Second look at Michael Steele?

Come on Ed, don’t get sucked in. Maintain objectivity.! Steele isn’t any better than anyone else. Couldn’t anybody point out the hypocrisy of Reid? If you are content to believe only a black man could have made these remarks, you’re lost in the illusion set forth by the educated class of liberal progressives.

Hawwy Weid reminds me of an obsequious and rheumy-eyed small town undertaker played by a down-on-his-luck character actor in Western movies. You know: the guy a Clint Eastwood character would spit at.

If a fireman burns down a house, do we give him a mulligan?
If a teacher has sex with a high school student, do we turn the other cheek?
If a boxer throws a fight, do we decline to hold it against him?
So why should we give a Democrat a break if he is a racist? Like the others, he has a duty to perform, and most of the time, he performs it. But when he occasionally slips up and lets his true nature show (arsonist, pedophile, cheat, racist), shouldn’t that be enough to question the appropriateness of his holding a position of responsibility?

I’m not concerned about Reid’s position as a senator. The voters of NV have every right to elect a racist to the seat. It isn’t illegal to be a racist. Lots of people are. However, the people of NV didn’t choose Reid as majority leader, and the Democrat leadership has a responsibility to party, country and morality to keep racists out of appointed positions of high honor.

What startles me the most is that Reid said this to reporters and this is the first we’re hearing about it.
