Video: Schwarzenegger calls ObamaCare a “ripoff”

posted at 12:15 pm on January 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

When exactly did California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger discover that ObamaCare was nothing more than a “ripoff”? Despite that the fact that the states would get stuck with huge increases in Medicaid had been apparent since the first drafts of the bill in Congress in the summer, Schwarzenegger only had his Road to Damascus moment when Ben Nelson cut a better deal with Harry Reid in the Senate bill than either of his two useless Senate Democrats, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein. Now the Governator has belatedly come out full force against ObamaCare, probably too late to undo the damage he did by providing Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Reid with a fig leaf of bipartisanship over the last few months:

It’s amusing to see Schwarzenegger whine about vote buying, as though he suddenly discovered it for the first time. Er, what political family did Arnold marry into? Pretty sure it wasn’t the Pauls. For his shock, shock! to find that vote-buying exists in the era of HopeandChange, the Governator gets a richly-deserved Captain Louis Renault Award. Oh, and as for his wandering off of the ObamaCare reservation the last couple of weeks? Don’t worry; as soon as Reid and Pelosi strip out the Nelson deal (which has become an albatross to Nelson anyway), he’ll be back.

Of course none of the stupid California programs Arnie has agreed to are rip-offs.

Schwarze had such a sterling opportunity to really be a leader way back when, only to blow it bigtime. What a waste.

I can hear it already, someone real real powerful is saying the following:

“Arnold shut the fook up. Don’t wee wee yourself. You are old, here take a pill. And as for Bill Clinton, I’ll catch up with him. I’ve never served anyone coffee.”

What does this clown know about ‘ripoffs’?

Metro on January 10, 2010 at 12:27 PM

Right, nothing like what Nelson did has ever taken place in Sacramento under Schwarzenegger.

Sad to say, he really looks very silly in this clip. It’s sad because I think he’s a good person. For whatever that’s worth.

Tommy_G on January 10, 2010 at 12:24 PM

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution has nothing to do with qualifications of a person to be President. They are enumerated in Article 2, Section 1:

No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

i don’t know why every Governor, R or D, isn’t raising hell about the unfunded Medicaid mandates in Obamacare.

its not like states are just awash in money & can help prop up Obamacare.

Virginia is struggling with its budget. Our legislators have written our Senators, Warner & Webb, & begged them to see the economic impact that Obamacare will have on our state.

and yeah, Arnold, you’re whining too late. you thought you were going to get a fed bailout for your whole state–that’s why you didn’t whine before. and now that it is obvious that the feds will not wholesale bail out California, you want to complain.

I voted for McClintock the first time around, then I voted for this guy in the re-election. Mr Swarzenegger is the indicative of the citizens of CA. We’re a screwed up people so we keep electing screwy people. Consistent though we are, a consistent EPIC FAIL we must stop being.

Weebork on January 10, 2010 at 12:58 PM

hehehe, funny Ed.

Couple weeks back, ahhnold was chastising Sarah Palin for environmental issues as a means to curry favor with the One and maybe get a bailout for his state. Is he merely now crying over “sour grapes” because he’s only getting the “husk” out of this deal and is still smarting after Sarah Palin cleaned his clock over CA’s budget issues?

This award is duly seconded for the Governator–strong biceps, weak positions.

ted c on January 10, 2010 at 1:02 PM

When exactly did California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger discover that ObamaCare was nothing more than a “ripoff”?

When he did not get a rumored position with the Obama admin?

Be that as it may it pains me to say that Arnie has done the impossible here in California–he makes Gray Davis look good. You have to have lived here to grasp what a failure he has been. Like the Repubs in DC from 2000-2006, he had a historic chance to make REAL change and he blew it when he flinched when faced with public/organized Dem resistance. Had he stood firm California would not be in its current position.

patrick neid on January 10, 2010 at 1:03 PM

he knew the bill was a POS all along. He was just holding out kissing ass hoping for a bailout from the feds for Caleeforna.

FIFY

Ahnold is looking for 6-10 BILLION just to avoid cutting services and raising taxes to pay for his government’s mistakes. In six months they’ll need another bailout to offset ObamaCare!

He’ll get most – if not all – of it too. Dems NEED votes and Californicate just happens to have millions of ‘em.

VoyskaPVO on January 10, 2010 at 1:09 PM

Schwarzenegger’s absolutely right in complaining about unfunded Federal mandates—especially since he’s embraced his illegal immigrants as a legitimate working force. The cost is breaking this state, along with the public employees retirement and pension funds. He’s just too chicken to make the legitimate claim that he’s inherited this fiasco from the Democrats forty year rein in the legislature. This state is poisoned with social entitlements, and if the Fed gives in and supplies/subsidizes California with out strict conditions, every one of YOU will pay for this down the road. The only thing between Schwarzenegger’s ears is this same “welfare mentality” EVERY LIBERAL embraces thinking that it’s the governments primary responsibility, (State or Federal), to provide for the welfare of its people—it’s a mental disease!

He just finished putting together another bogus budget and he fully realizes the state cannot afford the Medicare subsidy on top Medical and other welfare entitlements.

He got a little religion but it took until the end of his second term.
He is probably using a little of that new found religion to pray his wife lets him back into the master bedroom suite ever again after disrespecting her Uncle Teddy so.

FireBlogger on January 10, 2010 at 2:42 PM

Arnold thought, as did many California voters, he could leverage his enormous popularity and make gains against the hegemony of the over 40 year Democrat legislature. The Dems were appropriately spooked, at first. By the now famous 2006 initiatives, the state voters, some of the worst informed in the nation, sided with the spend-happy legislature, and Arnold folded. He’s been useless ever since, and should have just resigned.

He’s played RINO footsie with Obama hoping for special treatment over healthcare for California…until he saw that was futile.

It’s a pity. Arnold had such potential and California once was truly The Golden State.

marybel on January 10, 2010 at 3:27 PM

These complaints are rather rich coming from a governor who wants the Federal government to fund his state’s multi-billion dollar operating deficits.

Swartzenegger is the epitome of a RINO. He will compromise his values, if he has any, for anything that makes him look as if he is accomplihing something, even when he isn’t. He like McCain must be flushed from the hierarchy of the GOP or they will never be in power again.
