Quotes of the day

posted at 9:30 pm on January 10, 2010 by Allahpundit

“[S]ince Republicans have no power to remove Reid from his position, the majority leader remain in place unless he decides to step down voluntarily or Democratic senators turn against him. Neither seems likely.

“‘He has no intention of stepping down as majority leader,’ Reid spokesman Jim Manley said. ‘Unlike others who advocate moving our nation backwards, and viewing this moment for political gain, he’s working, today, tomorrow and the next day to move our country forward.’

“‘Mr. Steele and Sen. Cornyn want Reid out because they know they can’t beat Reid’ in November, Manley said.”

***
WILL: I don’t think there’s a scintilla of racism in what Harry Reid said. At long last, Harry Reid has said something that no one can disagree with, and he gets in trouble for it.
CHENEY: George, give me a break. I mean, talking about the color of the president’s skin…
WILL: Did he get it wrong?
CHENEY: … and the candidate’s…
WILL: Did he say anything false?
CHENEY: … it’s — these are clearly racist comments, George.

***
“If any Republican were caught speaking this way about Obama — even in private — liberal cries of racism would be filling the air. I can’t imagine how anyone can disagree with that. I see nothing wrong with acknowledging that double standard. I’m not sure that taking it to the next level and calling Reid a racist is the way to go. It’s a hateful and dispiriting tactic when liberals use it against conservatives. It would be hypocritical for conservatives to mimic it solely in the spirit of payback.

“As far as political tactics go, I’d rather Republicans simply acknowledged the double standard and chalked it up as yet another example of how Washington’s liberal Democrats have one set of rules for themselves and another for everybody else. That’s the sort of message that will win elections for Republicans in November. Shouting ‘the Democrats are racist’ won’t.”

***
“Recall that Reid once rushed to declare Justice Thomas to be ‘an embarrassment to the Supreme Court.’ When pressed for specifics, Reid declared that one of Thomas’s opinions was similar to ‘an eighth-grade dissertation’ — far inferior, Reid said, to the opinion of Justice Scalia in the same case. Except that Thomas’s short opinion was perfectly logical . . . and Scalia hadn’t even written an opinion in the case…

“So decry the attacks on Reid as political correctness — if you think that’s what they are. Some of us don’t agree. Some of us happen to think that his declarations about the comings and goings of Obama’s ‘Negro dialect’ are a little window into Harry’s soul.

“And if we’re wrong, I won’t feel too bad. Reid is simply getting a taste of the medicine he has so eagerly dished out to others.”

Harry Reid is an ignorant racist. He is also a Mormon that probably still believes that blacks shouldn’t be accepted into the church. His thinking is backward and soon his Senate position will be nothing but a memory.

Conservalicious on January 10, 2010 at 9:44 PM

As a Mormon myself, I’ve always been displeased with Harry Reid and find him to be an embarrassment to the LDS Church.

However, is not true that the Mormon Church (properly called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) is a racist institution.

How long has Dipstick Harry been a Mormon? Anyone remember how they used to treat non-whites? Before the government told them to clean it up, that is.

TinMan13 on January 10, 2010 at 9:55 PM

Given that people are talking about the LDS Church and its history with African Americans, I think people should at least educate themselves on this issue rather than just making uninformed statements about the LDS Church.

Plus, “He would be the one fetching the coffee 3 years ago”- Well, well, well, that’s only inside beltway generic” talk” and means nothing in particular. HOWEVER, if you shout, “You Lie” now you’ve committed the worst of worst, vile of vile.; you are branded for life and beyond. One of the above statements is wrong though the idea that Reid is unbeatable is absurd on so many different levels, I give a slight edge to DS.

The reality is that Reid isn’t going anywhere, too distracting in the midst of trying to hijack the health industry. He made a racist statement that, from a political standpoint, isn’t completely inaccurate. He will have to do a few more mea culpas and it will be over. Trent Lott was forced out by his party and Reid fully enjoys the support of all the Democrat criminals despite the fact he acted stupidly.

Dems had Al Sharpton on Morning Joe at 6:40 this morning to run interference for Harry Reid. Comedy gold. I hope Hot Air gets the entire segment.

Among other things, Sharpton reserved his greatest outrage for Clinton because of his comment about Obama’s fetching coffee for others.

Right now, Dems are trying to scream “Squirrels” a la the movie Up in order to divert attention away from Reid. Earlier in Morning Joe, arguments were being made the the authors of the new book didn’t play by the right rules in quoting Reid.

Hypocrisy is the order of the day with Dem pieces of sh*t.

Let him stew in his own sweat… screeching for his resignation only allows him to play the victim… and CONTINUES the “every comment everybody makes about Obama is racist” meme.

This should have been used to show that not everything Obama comment should be seen as racist… and put the press on notice that next time, the Right wants the same benefit of the doubt that we gave Reid.

Oh well… the screeches of “RACISM!” will now continue unabated.

mankai on January 11, 2010 at 7:23 AM

Republicans, despite their obvious problems on race issues, have every right to condemn the remarks.

RightOFLeft on January 10, 2010 at 11:56 PM

This was all over the “approved” television media this morning…

I seriously don’t see how Harry Reid can survive this… If he stays on as Majority Leader, he’ll just get HAMMERED on this every day between now and election day… No way he’ll resign his seat, so that means he’ll STILL get hammered every day until election day…

Putting the senior Senator from NY in the Majority Leader spot might also scare everybody in flyover country, so that’s not a bad thing either…

Khun Joe on January 11, 2010 at 7:46 AM

“The more you have in terms of criticism from Republicans, the more likely it is that it is just a political pile-on,”

Even Reid’s advisers are arrogant and out of touch. It couldn’t be that universal criticism is an indication that others are simply just acting on the facts. The truth is that the dems are elitists and have two different standards for what qualifies as racism.

csdeven on January 11, 2010 at 7:48 AM

Reid can march to the Senate floor in white sheets and a hood and blacks wouldn’t care as long as he has that (D) behind his name and he’s handing out gov’t freebies. Al Sharpton’s reaction to Reid’s comments are a perfect example of this.

Jonah Goldberg is 100% correct. Crying racism isn’t going to get the Republicans a single black vote. Forget it. It’s the blatant and insideous double standard that Liberals practice day in and day out that will win votes……just not from negroes.

P.S.-Thanks Harry, for freeing up the usage of the word “negro” again! It’s even Al Sharpton-approved! ;-)

milwife88 on January 11, 2010 at 7:52 AM

Yet again, the Dems use the memory hole to change the reality.

I’m curious though, how does a statement that Obama is electable because he doesn’t shuck and jive like most black politicians support his candidacy? Further, if this was support, why was Reid so quick to apologize.

More Democrats should be apologizing for their support of Obama!

highhopes on January 11, 2010 at 7:58 AM

Over at “The Corner,” K-Lo cites the statement by Barbara Lee, speaking on behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus re Reid’s statement:

“I have had an opportunity to speak with Senator Reid and he apologized for his unfortunate remarks concerning the President and he understands the gravity of such remarks. There are too many issues like the economy, job creation and energy for these regrettable comments to distract us from the work that must be done on behalf of the American people.

“Over the years, I have had an opportunity to work with Majority Leader Reid. Senator Reid’s record provides a stark contrast to actions of Republicans to block legislation that would benefit poor and minority communities – most recently reflected in Republican opposition to the Health Bill now under consideration. I look forward to Senator Reid continuing to serve as Majority Leader to guide this important agenda through the Senate.

“The Congressional Black Caucus believes that thoughtful engagement and civil discourse on race is needed, as our first “Dialogue on Race” in November 2009 demonstrated. There is a deep unease about race which cannot be swept under the rug. I appreciate Senator Reid’s apology and look forward to our continuing work.”

This statement is wrong on so many levels. The progressive legislative agenda of the Democrats is harmful to all Americans, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender, The impact of this agenda negatively affects the economy, job creation, and energy independence. The Democrat agenda, regardless of which aggrieved caucus is spouting off, engenders a growing dependent class and American decline for all.

Double Standard…double standard…isn’t that a phrase meaning hypocrisy? That was Al Sharpton in action on the talk shows this morning.

kingsjester on January 11, 2010 at 8:05 AM

Again, Caddell and Horowitz make the point that it doesn’t matter how the rabid Lefties twist words and history, their goal is power. To their mind, Reid’s words have “distracted” from the Dem agenda of inflicting their “transformation” on the nation.

onlineanalyst on January 11, 2010 at 8:06 AM

i have a very dark skinned, heavy Negro dialect woman that works for me. If i showed her Reid’s remarks, she would say that a Republican made them up–that they were all a lie. and if I asked her why would Reid apologize for them if he didn’t utter them, she would say it is because he is a nice man.

this is the extent to which the Dems have brainwashed many people, especially blacks in poor Southern areas.

You know the most informative racist thing about Reid is he acknowledged Obama has a dialect he uses for his shuck and jive act when around or talking to other Negros.

When he is talking to whites, he uses his white dialect and tries to stay in their comfort zone, when talking to Negroes he uses their dialect and tries to stay in their comfort zone.

What a pres we have, transcending race. Yes I did notice that about Obama before Reid brought it up …

So does this make Negro is the proper PC word, instead of the really stupid hyphenated -American tag that liberals like so well. If I were and American and wanted to put forth that I am of African descent, why not just go back to Africa? I would be insulted if someone called me an Irish-American or Mexican-American or whatever, every time they spoke.

And how about this quote from Obama about Trent Lott in 2002:

Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D-13th), who hosted WVON’s Cliff Kelley Show, challenged the Republican Party to repudiate Lott’s remarks and to call for his resignation as senate leader.

“It seems to be that we can forgive a 100-year-old senator for some of the indiscretion of his youth, but, what is more difficult to forgive is the current president of the U.S. Senate (Lott) suggesting we had been better off if we had followed a segregationist path in this country after all of the battles and fights for civil rights and all the work that we still have to do,” — said Obama.

He said: “The Republican Party itself has to drive out Trent Lott. If they have to stand for something, they have to stand up and say this is not the person we want representing our party.” —said Obama.

–From the December 12, 2002 issue of the Chicago Defender.

Leftists are destroyers, not builders.

Their psyche is tormented by their own greed and envy, which they project onto others.

They therefore have a very dim view of humanity.
Scratch just a little bit beneath the surface of their addled brains, and you will find that their ultimate concept of utopia would be a world without humans.

Caucasian, mongoloid and negroid are all scientific classifications. I said earlier that this place was full of woefully ignorant people.

thomasaur on January 11, 2010 at 12:08 AM

That doesn’t make any sense.

They’re are a lot of scientific classifications of a lot of things. Whats your point supposed to be?
“Scientifically”, there is one race…the human race.
Ethnicity is also a “scientific” term, and is more to the point imo.

Maybe Harry would be happy if Pinnochio borrowed Hillary’s Negro dialec didn’t she say something about “That Thar road to Faaar” or something?
Maybe someone has a link to Hillary doin her Negro thing. I won’t get banned for this comment will I?

As far as political tactics go, I’d rather Republicans simply acknowledged the double standard and chalked it up as yet another example of how Washington’s liberal Democrats have one set of rules for themselves and another for everybody else.

I don’t really think the comments should be sufficient to force any political leader to step down (though I don’t think that they were good comments by any means), but I think making a bit of a farce of it points out the hypocrisy.

Want to look into the darkness of the leftist mind?

Suggest to your favorite leftist the following scenario.
Somewhere on earth- let’s say an island somewhere- there is a happy little thriving capitalist society.

The little island society is completely unto itself with no interaction at all with the outside world.

The leftist’s first thought would be that that is unfair (a thought ultimately rooted in their own greed and envy). And rather than trying to emulate that society, they would begin to think of reasons and ways to infiltrate it and destroy it.

Leftists are the ultimate racists.
They view blacks as inferiors who are permanently off the island.

justltl on January 11, 2010 at 10:44 AM

And, OMG, just imagine the leftist’s fury were they to discover some blacks living happily on that island- that totally upsets their worldview and rationale for destroying the island.

Think Clarence Thomas, Condie Rice, Thomas Sowell, Armstrong Williams, Michael Steele.

As a corollary, this is in part why we see the strange support and defense of Reid by Obama and Sharpton.
They reinforce and confirm each other’s worst views of each other.
They are the Yin and Yang of leftism.

OK.
I’m done ranting for today.

Carry on.

justltl on January 11, 2010 at 11:05 AM

In today’s pc environment blacks have much more vocal freedom than whites.

BowHuntingTexas on January 11, 2010 at 3:37 AM

I agree, but its not just blacks, its minorities in general. They have more freedom of action also imo. The pendulum of “equality” has swung in one direction for too long, and a person would nave to be willfully blind to not see this in many of the whinings found in the menu of victims groups and the idiotic legislation and accompanying case law that has been established.
What a tragic waste of a societies energy and resources.

trent lott is not an apt analogue for what ried said. (the correct analogue for what lott said was what dodd said when he said that robert byrd was right about the civil war.) the correct analogue for what reid said which reveals the double standard is the nontroversy over this guy: http://washingtonindependent.com/73036/n-word-sign-dogs-would-be-tea-party-leadernote that his sign isn\’t a racial attack on black people, but a clumsy analogy which makes a moral equation between the powerlessness of taxpayers under the duress of government and a slave under the duress of the plantation foreman. progressives have sought to portray the sign as if it\’s moral content were the simple abuse of blacks by ignoring the moral content of the sign. now progressives want us to look past the racial semiotics of what reid said to consider that he didn\’t exactly say that he himself thought it would be worse for the president if her were more \”authentically\” black\”, only that \”some\” in the electorate might be assuaged by his light-skintone. which, as brit notes, is more of a smear against the electorate than obama. sorry. cannot comply. the sign guy is far from the only example of this kind of \”that sounds racist, therefor is racist\” attack. when you set spite aside though, one can\’t helpo but be disturbed that reid is speaking a version of the old \”secret jew\” canard.
