Yowza: Brown 48, Coakley 47 in new PPP poll
posted at 8:19 pm on January 9, 2010 by Allahpundit
The exciting, and I do mean exciting, follow-up to last night’s post. Not until I hear the words “Coakley concedes” will I believe this is possible, but just try to wrap your mind around these numbers. The indies alone:
-As was the case in the Gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia last year, it looks like the electorate in Massachusetts will be considerably more conservative than the one that showed up in 2008. Obama took the state by 26 points then, but those planning to vote next week only report having voted for him by 16.
-Republicans are considerably more enthusiastic about turning out to vote than Democrats are. 66% of GOP voters say they are ‘very excited’ about casting their votes, while only 48% of Democrats express that sentiment- and that’s among the Democrats who are planning to vote in contrast to the many who are apparently not planning to do so at this point.
-Brown has eye popping numbers with independents, sporting a 70/16 favorability rating with them and holding a 63-31 lead in the horse race with Coakley. Health care may be hurting Democratic fortunes with that group, as only 27% of independents express support for Obama’s plan with 59% opposed.
Check the crosstabs and you’ll find Brown pulling 17 percent of the Democratic vote versus just six percent of the Republican vote for Coakley. Coakley’s net favorable rating? +8. Brown’s? +32. I won’t be surprised to see Biden or even The One himself forced to jet up there next week to try to get the base, especially young voters and minorities, to turn out.
Here’s Brown on last night’s Hannity promising to be the 41st vote against ObamaCare — assuming the Dems let him into the chamber. Exit question: If you’re a Blue Dog, how do you begin to process this information?

That is the same way TARP came about. As far as I know, not a single dollar of TARP has been used the way the program was pitched for the money to be used. We were told the government would by “toxic assets” freeing the banks to use their reserves to begin lending again. Instead we simply took the cash, injected it directly into bank reserves and have left them holding the toxic assets. Then we use the cash we have given them as leverage to manage their behavior such as controlling what they can pay their people. Nobody would have voted for the program if it had been sold that way.
I supported the way TARP was supposed to work. I am absolutely against the way it has been used.

Scott Brown himself was asked about this by reporters and he said he didn’t know what people were talking about, that he’d gotten everything he’d asked for from the RNC & NSRC. And Steele sent out a letter soliciting funds, asking Republicans to send to the Brown campaign directly.
Your explanation does make a lot of sense. There was a lot of blowback in NY23 from local voters who resented the involvement of out-of-staters agitating for Hoffman, if we’ll recall.
Or perhaps somebody was just using some clever psychology this time by playing on the party leadership’s (often deserved) reputation for obliviousness to get people’s dander up, start the cash rolling in & fire up the phone banks for Scott Brown.
Who knows? Whatever the source of the ‘Scott’s been abandoned by his party’ meme, it does seem to have worked quite nicely, though! ;-)

This popped across my twitter-
Acorn’s Favorite Nut Last September Congress finally took action to defund ACORN. It was about time with the numerous indictments popping up across the country and the multiple video tapes exposing them trying to encourage illegal activity. Even their top supporter Barney Frank voted for the measure to revoke their funds.
So I think we can all agree that Acorn is a corrupt organization.
According to Acorn’s 2008 scorecard, they rate our Attorney General, Martha Coakley, with an A+. Does this give you concern about Martha? She got a perfect score in every category — Servicing data reservoir, Legal relief against foreclosure, Predatory lending protections, Pipeline for distressed borrowers, Advocate for individuals, Bankruptcy reform, Town hall forums, Pressuring servicers to improve, Advocate state reforms and Extra credit…

Interesting predicament…
The Democrats can’t loose this “one” Senatorial seat, especially “The Lion of the Senate” ( I know, vomit ), so they have to use all their dirty tricks to win by theft, graft, and corruption.
But, they also have to know that every single eye is going to be upon them, and any malfeasance will effect the party in total, and I am sure C-SPAN will have no trouble reminding everyone going into 2010/2012 of that fact, let alone FOX, and any other news organizations that wants to meet their payroll.
What to do? What to do?
You know, when you have sold your soul so many times, when the time comes to do the right thing, it can be kinda hard…

PPP was relatively accurate when it came to the NJ and VA elections. NY-23 was by no means a standard election… there were tons of problems with it.
But you are right, it’s best to hold a skeptical view for now.
Enoxo on January 9, 2010 at 10:47 PM
I had the same reservations. But PPP called New Jersey and Virginia accurately. So perhaps (we hope), statewide polling works better for them than a single, isolated, rural district.

Thant being said — GO BROWNIE!
mdenis39 on January 9, 2010 at 11:33 PM
The House and Senate versions of the bill will have to be identical for there to not be any further cloture votes in the Senate. If they can get the House to just accept the Senate bill without any changes, then that would be the case……but who knows if that will absolutely happen. There are some Democrats who are pissed off at the lack of a public options, others pissed off about the tax on “cadillac-plans” which affect their union buddies (and others), and some Democrats who are opposed to the Senate abortion language not being the same as the language offered by Stupak. Any one of these three groups could refuse to go along with a blanket acceptance of the Senate bill. If there are changes, it would go back the Senate and Racist Harry would have to start the whole cloture process all over again.
Not saying that a Brown victory would kill Obamacare…..that might be moot before he would even take office, supposing he’d win.

From what I know of Coakley, that’s actually a fair assessment. She seems to be a rather lazy, ineffectual politician who’s gotten to where she is by virtue of her connections and the fact that she’s in a geographic area that skews – obscenely – to the left every cycle.

Yeah, and commercial loan failures on top of that is going to make things even worse. California small business bankruptcies were up 80% over this time last year. That will amount to a lot of empty building space.

It’s possible!
Scott Brown has been running an incredible campaign for months now. Even back in October, he was going to eight or ten events in a single evening, just showing up, meeting people, telling people he was running.
He reached out the Tea Party. He got Mass Citizens for Life to endorse him. That man has been a machine and this is it paying off.
The Left is freaking out. Senator Kirk, who was appointed by Deval Patrick to replace Kennedy while the election was going on, has already said that he will refuse to allow Scott Brown to vote if he wins; he’ll delay getting him into office. It’s for the people and out of respect for Kennedy, dontcha know.

I thought Brown was a bit evasive on Hannity. He wants to kill this bill, but also wants to start over. I’m nervous he’s going to be another Specter or Snowe or Collins in the long-run. However, a short-term earthquake with him winning would be nice. It would scare even the most die-hard politician to the core. Or it should.
SouthernGent on January 10, 2010 at 1:47 AM
Uh… Not quite the ‘true’ conservative:
iamse7en on January 10, 2010 at 1:53 AM
He may not be the perfect conservative, but he will still be far better than a reflex Dem in the seat that will vote for everything uber liberal. I, too, heard him in Hannity and thought he was being mindful of the demographics in his state, and there are a lot of liberals there. So he had to soft pedal while talking to Hannity.
However he could be another snowe/collins, BUT the psychological blow it would be to put an R in the swimmer’s seat is just to delicious to pass up. So, let’s support this dude and work harder to take back more senate seats in states that are more purple or red than Taxachusetts.
karenhasfreedom on January 10, 2010 at 2:01 AM
Yes it did. Add that PPP tends to lean towards the Democratic side, and putting out these numbers at this time could be as much a call to arms for the regular Mass Democrats to save Coakley from an upset loss as it is an accurate snapshot of the election 10 days out (just as pollsters can skew their numbers to the left, they can also skew them to the right, even though that doesn’t happen nearly as often. So I’d be interested in the sample PPP used for this latest survey before I start believing the figures).
jon1979 on January 10, 2010 at 2:02 AM
If Brown wins, even MSDNC morons like Olbermann won’t be able to spin it away.
Speedwagon82 on January 10, 2010 at 2:13 AM
Interesting (and VERY ironic) aspect of this race:
If MA had been a state considered to be legitimately “in play” by the RNC a few months ago, rather than a slam-dunk for the D’s, Brown wouldn’t even be IN this race.
The “party” would have recruited a tried-and-true R candidate and we’d have had a same-old, same-old campaign.
My point is, the favorable rating of Republicans generally in MA is not that important because Brown, though running as a Republican, is not identified as a candidate “hand picked” by the Republican Party. Nor is he the candidate we might have seen had the R’s really thought this race could be won.
For my three cents (adjusted for inflation), that’s a GOOD thing.
Bring us some more candidates like this one, outside the mold, and we might actually shake this country up — and take it back in the bargain.
IndieDogg on January 10, 2010 at 2:20 AM
That is so unbelievably ignorant.
In Massachusetts, Prop 2 1/2 is designed to ensure that towns cannot increase property taxes without the approval of the citizens. This helps older people to keep their homes and helps people who are on a fixed income.
However, when a town needs a big municipal project, like building a school, it will put through a Prop 2 1/2 override to fund that and to fund that alone. The override is for a very specific amount and a limited time. It isn’t some wild tax that goes out of control and can never be repealed, with money that gets funneled off into other things; it’s the exact type of tax that you want – limited in duration and for a very specific purpose.
So. bloody. ignorant.

JetBlast on January 10, 2010 at 2:25 AM
Oh, wait, then iamse7en (on January 10, 2010 at 1:53 AM) complains that Brown wasn’t into taxes, because he wanted to do what 30% of the voters did and repeal the state income tax.
Aside from the sheer cognitive dissonance, the complaint is, again, totally ignorant. MA has some of the highest taxes in the country. We fight to repeal the income tax for several reasons, namely, to let Beacon Hill know that we are willing to exercise the nuclear option of de-funding them if they aren’t more responsible with our money, and, additionally, to remain more competitive.
New Hampshire, which is a little over a half-hour away from Boston, does not have a state income tax nor a state sales tax. (Massachusetts has a 5.3% income tax and a 6.25% sales tax, along with very high property taxes.) The state is losing jobs, corporations, and young people to other states. This is New England; you can drive along I-95 from New Hampshire to Rhode Island in less than two hours. As young people are finding that it’s only affordable to live in New Hampshire and as jobs are leaving the state, it only makes sense to find a way – any way – to keep people here.
But I guess that starving the beast is a bad solution?
Roxeanne de Luca on January 10, 2010 at 2:30 AM
There are two different kinds of Prop 2 1/2 overrides. Your description is for a capital override. An operating override increases the levy limit permanently.
In any case, thanks to Prop 2 1/2, town spending can be closely monitored by the citizens. At the federal level is where you get billions thrown around to buy votes for items buried in 2000 bills negatiated behind closed doors.
That http://www.rightcondition.com is ridiculous. Probably some whackjob funded by Soros in an attempt to reduce conservative turnout.
Even if he turns out to be a Snow or a Collins, they are holding firm on the filibuster but they need one more vote to stop Pelosi, Reid, and Obama.

Even if Brown doesn’t win — I did send him a donation and urge everyone else to do so — the fact that he is within a hair of taking over Ted Kennedy’s uber liberal seat speaks volumes about the disgust many non liberals are feeling about the Orwellian Corruptocracy we presently have in Washington, DC.
