Bill Clinton 2008 on Obama: A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee
posted at 5:08 pm on January 9, 2010 by Allahpundit
Another hot excerpt from the same book that’s got Dingy Harry groveling. What a treat to hear how the Lords of Tolerance talk to each other behind closed doors.
This is turning into some day.
[A]s Hillary bungled Caroline, Bill’s handling of Ted was even worse. The day after Iowa, he phoned Kennedy and pressed for an endorsement, making the case for his wife. But Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.
As politically tempting as it is to demagogue this, and duly aware that the left would never give the benefit of the doubt to a conservative in an argument over racial subtext, I can’t believe Billy Jeff meant it “that way.” Comparing a guy running to become the first black president to some sort of servant is astoundingly tone-deaf, but that was par for the course for Clinton throughout that campaign. Remember when he idly compared The One to Jesse Jackson in the run-up to the South Carolina primary, at a moment when the media was paranoid that Hillary would try to “racialize” the campaign? All he meant by the coffee remark, I assume, was that The One was too young and green to be president, not far removed in age and experience from, say, a Senate aide. Which is also plenty insulting given how long Obama spent as a state senator, but certainly not racially untoward. The great mystery here is why Teddy was so offended by the remark. Did he perceive some racial subtext in it? Hard to believe he’d flip out simply because Clinton belittled Obama’s resume.
Ambinder’s got a new list up of juicy quotes from the book, including reports of our eventual secretary of state cheering on attempts to push the cokehead meme against Obama, so go check that out. A parting thought that scarcely needs articulating: Had a Republican said what BJ said, he’d be finished, finished, finished.
Update: A theory as to why Teddy might have been pissed at Clinton for denigrating Obama’s youth: JFK was even younger than The One when he became president, and Teddy and Caroline were both eyeing Obama as some sort of lost heir to Camelot. Not absurd to think he might have taken it personally somehow.

Ted didn’t like Bill and felt O would do more to carry on the Kennedy legacy than Hillary. An important consideration since he could be even more certain Patrick wasn’t going to get beyond Rhode Island (or far from rehab). Bill was right about O being a lightweight.

if obama were a young, inexperienced white candidate, and bill said what he did, no one would have blinked.
i can’t believe bill meant it in a racial manner – i believe he was referring to how inexperienced obama was/is, and he would have been a gopher/low man on the block just a few years before.
even the reid comment wouldn’t be that big of a deal (considering his age) if it wasn’t for the left continuously attacking the right as racist.

I just finished reading the 10 page story on John Edwards affair over on Drudge, and I must say, BARF! What a sleazeball, and as sad as Elizabeth’s cancer is to her family, she is no prize either! I can’t BEGIN to imagine the stories that are out there of Bill Clinton’s affairs, and all the sleazy hangers-on that worked night and day to keep them under wraps. It’s pretty disgusting to know the lengths people like Axelrod will go to to keep voters from knowing what kind of dirtbag they’re working for!

I have no idea. Was he really offended or was that derived on his behalf from a long-after-the-event analysis too?
Besides some people make a living out of being offended on somebody else’s behalf, when no offence was intended in the first place. That is what ‘political correctness’ is all about.
Does anybody really think that a coffee-table book about politicians will be a plain, sober account of the facts with no attempt made to make some matters seem more juicy or sordid than they really were?
There are plenty of reasons to dislike Mr Clinton without drawing upon this kind of reconstructed smear.
YiZhangZhe on January 9, 2010 at 6:05 PM
This is Ted Kennedy sticking it to Clinton from beyond the grave. I’m sure the story was either concocted or distorted through cancerous Kennedy neurons.
One of these days, Clinton is going to realize the Kennedy clan is out to get him. Only then will Billary strike back. Should be fun.

So today we have once again confirmed that Obama, Sharpton, Bill Clinton, and Harry Reid are racists. I suggest that any liberals or “progressives” that immediately shout “racist” whenever anyone questions Obama and his policies take notice. It is they who are the racists, not those who they call racist.
MeAlice on January 9, 2010 at 6:14 PM
Reid’s comment, on the other hand, smacked of racism. I mean it sounded like he was inferring that Obama was ok because he wasn’t that black, and he talked like a white man.

As to the first quote, check Obama’s record as a state senator, he voted present more times than not. His record is less than distinguished to say the least.
As to the second, JFK may have not have been a saint but he was tested under fire in WW 2 and passed. He was a better man than Obama will ever be, faults and all, and Obama is still unqualified to be president even nearly a year into his term.I hate to defend Clinton but he is 100% correct in his statement about “the won” although I can see that those who see racism everywhere can see it that way. Heck, if disageeing with Obama’s policies gets you called a racist, why wouldn’t this?

Holy cow, the stories on the Dems in this book are everything we all suspected but never thought we’d see reported flat-out.
The MSM had to know most of these stories.
I’m inclined to go with Ed’s charitable take on Clinton’s comment but then again … I could go either way. I know we all know that his observation “if an R had said it” is true. As I said on Twitter about Reid (who I also don’t think was guilty of “racism” — a charge wielded all too often, mostly against righties and mostly unfairly and untrue, diminishing real racism), an R Senator who said this (and that) would be hounded not just off a committee but straight out of the Senate. That goes for an R Senator whose spouse was found to have been spouting off this kind of thing.

Regarding the quote about the Cindy McCain rumor, some jerk on HuffPo wrote a column during the campaign insinuating that Cindy McCain was having an affair, and said he would post details on it shortly. But he never did make another post.
According to this book, apparently the rumors were pretty strong, but I guess there was nothing to it, or we would’ve read all about in the NYT.

Unfortunately, just like all other democrat transgressions, this too will be forgiven.

The democrats lie, cheat, and steal, but, as long as the democrats keep doling out the freebies and the republicans allow the democrats to shout over them and call them evil, they will still line up at the polls to vote for the lying dems.

Well, until it was mysteriously disappeared from O’bama’s wiki entry in the summer of 2008. mention was made that the elite private prep school he went to in Hawai’i, Punahou, was one of many schools in the Islands practicing the ancient tradition known as “Kill Haole Day”, where non-white students would beat the getalife out of white kids, solely because of their race. I lived in the Islands in the early 1960s and can personally attest to said practice.
Gee, I wonder why someone would scrub that from wiki?

I’m not sure I understand your comment. You do realize that I was quoting Clinton’s comment.
And in any case, I see nothing wrong with what Reid said other than I think most of us would have said “black” or “ghetto” and not “negro”.
This whole BS exercise of forcing people to make insincere apologies is the height of PC hypocrisy. When a person says something that they regret, they usually try to make ammends right away. We have all said something mean or hateful in the heat of the moment and felt bad. And we have all said something mean or hateful that we meant and really don’t feel bad about. So apologies are meaningless unless heartfelt.

I know that a lot of native Hawaiians (many, not all) do not like “haoles.” My first experience of racism was in Hawaii in kindergarten. I was a haole and a group of Hawaiian boys were making fun of me because of my skin color.
Recently we were stationed in Hawaii and had a few neighbors that went to Punahou. I never heard about that practice. Maybe they did it when Obama went to school there; I doubt that they do that now. Did you save a screen cap when that info was there?

Cindy Munford on January 9, 2010 at 7:46 PM
Herein lies the difference between a Southern Democrat and the effete liberal Dems of the Boston-NY-DC corridor: Of course Clinton didn’t “mean it” that way. Clinton doesn’t have to play the race card, or racialize anything, because he doesn’t have the same kind of white guilt hang ups that people like Teddy have. Only a true racist would even make that kind of association in the first place. Of course, Clinton grew up surrounded by blacks whereas Teddy’s only association with them in his childhood probably didn’t extend beyond the staff at the local country club
