Audio: McCaskill wants a conference committee for ObamaCare, but …

posted at 11:01 am on January 9, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

My friend Jamie Allman in St. Louis gets Sen. Claire McCaskill to at least acknowledge that the House and Senate should hold a conference committee in the open to reach a compromise on ObamaCare.  He even gets McCaskill to commit to saying she wants the Democrats to do that rather than convene in secret amongst themselves to shove something new down the throats of elected officials in both chambers of Congress.  But will she vote against whatever the backroom-deal process produces?  Will she stick to her guns when the rubber meets the road?

Three guesses, and the first two don’t count:

The only principle in play here is We won.  The Democrats had better enjoy that while they can, because at this rate it will expire in about ten months.

mankai on January 9, 2010 at 11:07 AM

The Dems either think that the messiah can save them while the country implodes or they all need 12 step programs.
Either way, they’d better start end of life planning.

ORconservative on January 9, 2010 at 11:07 AM

Look at her face. The stupor of corruption is written all over it. Like Ben Nelson. These people aren’t really alive. They’re kind of a walking dead, or walking half-living.

The screen capture says it all: “I wish these little people would stop bugging me and expect that I actually listen to them.”

Bishop on January 9, 2010 at 11:14 AM

The Dems got it all wrong, the only reason the media is now going after them is because they refuse to open up the committee to cameras. The media is feeling jilted and is now whining and harrumphing like a child. If the opened it up to the media, they would be BFF again, with the media more than happy to run flack for the Dems.

The media is cheap date- they want only access as payment to shill.

dIb on January 9, 2010 at 11:15 AM

How many times do we have to hear Sen. McCaskill talk about all her principled positions on ObamaCare? She’s just posturing.

When it comes time to vote, she’ll for ObamaCare in whatever form it’s in without giving a second thought to what her “principled” objections were.

SlaveDog on January 9, 2010 at 11:16 AM

What the hell is that Bambi 50% McCain 45% garbage on the screencap?

fiatboomer on January 9, 2010 at 11:17 AM

Like I said before, videos of her in her town halls show her looking like Mrs. Cleaver in her mommy pearls with “Don’t you trust mommy?” Since back in DC she wears ugly Keith Olbermann glasses and looks like Rachel Maddow’s butch partner.

Marcus on January 9, 2010 at 11:18 AM

The Democrats had better enjoy that while they can, because at this rate it will expire in about ten months.

If Brown wins on Jan 19 in MA then the “I Won” mantra is dead. Actually, it’s expiration date started to erode last November in NJ and VA.

It’s good to know all of Obama’s promises have expiration dates.

Living next door to Missouri, I know this. Claire baby is living on borrowed time and she knows it. Like most of these last termers she sees herself as a martyr to the cause.

Only thing is, they will not be remembered as martyrs, but as traitors and sellouts to the American people.

She, and those of her ilk, make me first of all angry, and most of all, sick.

uknowmorethanme on January 9, 2010 at 11:38 AM

Claire McCaskill is trying to walk that fine line between what her upbringing tells her to do and the powerful influences that corrupt almost everyone that is elected to Federal office.

She was a good prosecutor but she sounds like she’s already stepped over that line.

Vince on January 9, 2010 at 11:39 AM

Of course she won’t she’s a professional politician and it would go against her creed to be honest, forthright, moral and courageous. She may have been something else in the past but now she’s just another political dirtbag so don’t expect anything from her.

rplat on January 9, 2010 at 11:45 AM

Claire is so full of sh*t! She has been bombarded by thousands of Missourians, who have told her to vote no on this healthcare boondoggle and she DOESN’T CARE! She won very dubiously. By a few thousand votes that ACORN no doubt found in a trash can for her and b/c she pushed the stem cell funding crap demonizing Jim Talent as someone who wants to let people die or something b/c he won’t fund embryonic stem cell research. She’s a WH*RE for Obama. She must go in ’12. I’ve written her every week for almost 2 yrs. and I used to get back the stock talking pts. Now I get nothing. She’s an embarassment.

JAM on January 9, 2010 at 11:50 AM

Will she stick to her guns when the rubber meets the road?

No, its pure bait and switch, which is just another extension of the same bait and switch that put socialist control care through the House and the Senate. We should not fool ourselves, unless Americans become very serious about stopping this the Democrats will have succeeded in putting all of us under their heel.

The jack boot purple shirts with Obama issued billy clubs.

Mr. Arrogant on January 9, 2010 at 11:54 AM

Clair doesn’t need to fret. The bill is going to go through..

http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/18763

Resolved, That the bill from the House of Representatives
(H.R. 3590) entitled “An Act to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to modify the first-time homebuyers credit in the case of members of the Armed Forces and certain other Federal employees, and for other purposes.’‘, do pass with the following AMENDMENTS:
Strike out all after the enacting clause and insert:
HR 3590 EAS/PP
1 SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE; TABLE OF CONTENTS.
2 (a) SHORT TITLE.—This Act may be cited as the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’‘.

Step Three – The Senate has stealthily passed Obamacare under a benign House Bill for cover.
This satisfies the Constitutional requirement that finance bills originate in the House of Representatives.—Completed.

The Senate Bill does not now need to reconcile with H.R. 3692 which is the Pelosi version of Obamacare. Therefore the Bart Stupak anti tax funded abortion rant is a useful diversion. Mr. Stupak may have some influence later on if and when the House takes up H.R. 3692 again.

This is why the Republicans have been locked out of the faux Reconciliation Conference. Look for Pelosi to pass an unchanged H.R. 3590 as soon as the House reconvenes.

Step Four – All that is now necessary is for the House to pass, by a simple majority vote to pass the Senate’s reconfigured H.R. 3590 without changes and present it to President Obama for his signature.

Voila! The Democrat’s 50 year old dream of government controlled healthcare is a fait d’accompli!

Every single close senate race in 2006 and 2008 went to the Dem. Every one. Missouri, Virginia, Montana, Minnesota, Alaska, Oregon and one or two more I can’t think of.

All of them were within 1% or so and 100% of them just happened to go the way of the Dems. Pure coincidence I’m sure.

Presactly.
Im sure Dodd and Dorgan have been promised plum positions too. Harry Reid is the other one that has been told that the rewards will far outweigh losing his seat in November.
This is corruption at it’s worst…but why can’t someone, someone bring ethics charges against these clowns for accepting these bribes?

I hope that somehow a cloture vote will be required, so that these vermin like Nelson and McCaskill are held accountable.

justltl on January 9, 2010 at 2:55 PM

The best Claire McCaskill moment is when she asked a town hall audience if they trusted her the crowd shouted “No!” and she looked like she was going to cry. Her political career is over.

Theworldisnotenough on January 9, 2010 at 3:00 PM

If these POS senators that get voted out of office land in cushy federal positions Obama can kiss 2012 goodbye. Or that is how it should be. If we get another crappy candidate then they won’t touch the issue.

Red Cloud on January 9, 2010 at 8:33 PM

You gotta feel for Claire. A loyal and devoted campaigner for Obama who came out early and often, she was expecting a cabinet appointment. Napolitano got hers, Sibelius got hers and Hillary Clinton, for God’s sake, scored the brass ring, but poor Claire was abandoned to toil unhappily in the Senate where she has to deal with–shudder–constituents. You’d be bitter, too.

SukieTawdry on January 9, 2010 at 10:44 PM

McCaskill crows about her fiscal conservatism and her “watch dog on waste” credentials as the former Missouri Auditor. All of that is a bunch of baloney. She signs off on anything that Harry Reid wants if her vote is needed to pass legislation. Harry lets her say no if he has the votes elsewhere. On the ObamaCare budget busting bill, Harry needs her and she’ll jump as high as he wants her to. The Madoff type accounting gimmicks the Democrats have employed will give her some cover with the far left, but she will have hell to pay when she comes back to a townhall here in Missouri, and in 2012 the bell will toll for her life as a senator.

stefano1 on January 9, 2010 at 11:08 PM

She started out with a good line of BS but I never trust a lib to do what they say, she didn’t disappoint me in that respect. She comes to the town hall meetings and tells us one thing then returns to DC to do the opposite. I really thought that of all the Dem senators that she would be more inclined to stand up for the peeps at home, this is a little disappointing but really no surprise.

Support Scott Brown!!

How does someone so ill-portrayed by media images, so uncomfortable in public speaking, and so limited in intellect end up getting elected to the Senate?

Just common sense says she must be a prime target by the GOP. She’s an idiot.

Jaibones on January 10, 2010 at 10:42 AM

This is an utterly unconvincing argument against McCaskill. I don’t even understand why anyone would even think she should vote against health care, if she thinks it is so important to the American people, on a point of procedure.

I don’t agree with McCaskill often, but I have noticed that after Leibermann, she is the Democrat who thinks most seriously about issues. I wish the other 57 Democratic senators would occasionally think about an issue.

thuja on January 10, 2010 at 4:01 PM

I know McCaskill. She will say ANYTHING! She is a socialist to the marrow. She throws these things out regularly but if you’re keeping score (like me) you will soon realize that she ONLY does it when there isn’t a chance in hell that it changes anything. It is calculatedly meaningless. This statement from her serves only as affirmation that she already knows – it ain’t ever gonna happen.

Pole-Cat on January 10, 2010 at 10:41 PM

I listen to Jamie Allman every day, and I’ve listened to Jamie interview her many time and Jamie gives her way too much credit. Which is odd because Jamie is straight up conservative and usually “no holds barred” but for some reason Claire has him buffaloed.
