Video: “Kick-Ass” trailer

posted at 9:40 pm on January 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

I need to atone for subjecting you to the “A-Team” trailer earlier so here’s my penance. Turns out that the controversial “Hit-Girl” trailer I posted over the weekend isn’t for a “Hit-Girl” movie at all; she’s actually just a character in this flick, which looks to be wildly entertaining, if a bit … extreme.

Can’t quite tell yet if it’s a send-up of superhero flicks or an anarchic homage to them, but I’ll probably pay $15 or whatever the ridiculous going rate is in NYC to find out.

It’s based on a (still incomplete) comic by one of the biggest names in the industry, Mark Millar (he also wrote the book Wanted was based on). This is what he does: ultra-violent and over the top, but at the same a sort of homage to the good old days.

Number 2 on January 8, 2010 at 9:48 PM

If you didn’t know she was a supporting character in a Marvel (ICON) comic, you should get out more. The big schtick of the book is how violent it is. You’d probably piss your pants, drop the book and run for your life.

“Southern Belle” who talks like a Sailor. I knew that claim was bogus.

TTheoLogan on January 8, 2010 at 9:55 PM

Kick-Ass, I thought, was a slightly Alan Moore-esque attempt to render the absurdity of superhero-ness into a more real-life setting.

So you had this normal kid determined to transform himself into a hero, and he ends up falling off roofs, repeatedly getting his ass whooped, his secretive life-style and odd bruises lead the other kids at school to think he’s a gay prostitute or something, etc.

That’s one of the reasons the Hit-Girl trailer bugged me so much (aside from how super-violent and profane it was) was that this little girl has these seemingly super-human propensities for agility and strength. Now you’re just back to normal superhero acrobatics.

Muswell Hillbilly on January 8, 2010 at 9:56 PM

Allah, I think they’re just goofing on the real life super hero phenomenon.

illustro on January 8, 2010 at 10:06 PM

Yeah…sorry…I teach kids and know what parents are up against as is. This movie could have been great fun cleaned up a little. But any company that has no qualms producing a product that will make it so the words “Kick A$$” are posted on every movie marquis, as well as on TV trailers, etc so that kids get exposed to this – far earlier than they have the emotional maturity or life experience to deal with it – belong in the dregs. (I felt the same about Inglorious Basterds – even with the misspelling). I’m no prude, and have no qualms with adults choosing to be exposed to lewd language and behavior, graphic violence – hell, pop in a p0rn if you so desire. But come on, keep it behind closed doors and away from the glance of kids*.

*And this is legit concern for kids – not the liberal faux outrage.

This is the greatest trailer I have ever seen. It captivates the imagination by virtue of those time-honored archetypal themes first made explicit by the preSocratic thinkers of Miletus.

Finally Hollywood has seen the light.

Instead of the relentless portrayal of mindless gratuitous violence over-burdened by CGI effects, in this instance they have opted to frame for the viewing audience the grand questions which go the very heart of our quest for a greater understanding of physical reality.

On foundations such as these there is no limit to what mankind can aspire to.

I give you gen-x, gen-y and gen-z: two-thumbs up, future-bound and destined for the bottom of the abyss.

I mean to each his own really but seriously, why promote this. Sure this trailer looks like its just a good stupid movie, but weve seen the other uncensored trailer focused on the girl.

Hurricanes on January 8, 2010 at 10:15 PM

Its not about if you can handle it or not. But generally, conservatives have been the group more close to morals, family values, and largely religious Christian type people. But I guess this further proves how so many people are hypocrites and do a whole lot of talking but dont have much of a clue about what their faith is about.

Sure you can be conservative and not religious or Christian I suppose but most claim to have a belief in faith, family, and God. Movies like this go against those values, especially Christian values.

bucsox79 on January 8, 2010 at 10:24 PM

Once again, this is a movie based off a successful comic book.

It’s about a kid, set in a reality setting, who wants to be a superhero to do good–so he creates a costume / persona and goes out to try to do good… only to find out reality sucks, and is very painful.

He then finds out there are others like him who are trying to stop crime bosses, etc (Hit Girl and Big Daddy).

I’ve read the comic, and it’s rather entertaining. I’m undecided if I want to go see the movie, as I rarely go to the movie theatre.

It is a conservative blog, one that deals specifically with conservative politics and sometimes goes off-topic for fun with trailers, football, strange videos, etc. If you want a faith-based conservative blog, go find one.

There are all kinds of conservatives in this country, including ones (like myself) that are more than happy to sit back and enjoy a movie like this while still lauding faith-based initiatives, railing against same-sex marriage, and otherwise coming to the defense of persecuted Christians and Jews.

I think the movie looks like fun; I’ll gladly see it and there is nothing wrong with a follow-up post showing the actual movie’s trailer versus the short-clip focusing on just Hit Girl. Of course the protagonist of Watchmen, Rorschach, is pretty much what would pass for a bogeyman for the modern left isn’t he?

WastelandMan on January 8, 2010 at 11:59 PM

Meh. Compared to the slasher movies those Hollywood peaceniks push, this is mild. But I don’t like gore and giblets in movies, especially movies that are ostensibly about superheroes. Presented this way, the characters are antiheroes.

What makes Batman interesting and heroic is that he doesn’t kill. Well, not since Detective Comics # 50 or so – well before Fredrik Wertham and the (comic) book burnings he inspired in the 1950′s.

Venusian Visitor on January 9, 2010 at 12:00 AM

The creator of this movie is a great re-writer. It’s his wheelhouse. If there’s a beloved character he’ll re-write it. Re-wrote Superman’s origin story so that he landed in the Soviet Union and became the champion of Communism, re-wrote all of Marvel’s most famous superheroes to be their new “Ultimate” politically correct versions, killed Captain America during the Marvel “Civil War” (a one-sided polemic against Bush and the War on Terror), and is actively developing a multi-issue comic version of Das Kapital where he and other acclaimed comic and sci-fi writers will produce a comic book for introducing Marxism to audiences for every aspect of modern life. Yes, it’s Millar’s “dream project” to re-write Marx to appeal to 21st Century audiences.

Controversial! Edgy! Be sure to buy your movie ticket for Kick-Ass and show your support this controversial edgy writer! Don’t forget to justify your cultural suicide with a smarmy: “I’m an adult that can separate the politics out of my entertainment choices” for all us uncultured suburban mouth-breathers!

Thanks, I do consider myself pretty anti-leftist.

And Rorschach had a very black-and-white view of the world. No shades of gray, no compromise (which ended up getting him killed (is it a spoiler if the source material has been around since 1986?)). Which is just about as anti-leftist as it can get.

The delicate matter is the fine line between rooting for everyday people who take it upon themselves to right the wrongs they see around them, and having that noble sentiment morph into some form of vigilantism. But comic book fantasy is an escape to worlds where bad guys get what’s coming to them at the hands of the good guys. There’s a lot of that which is lacking in what passes for reality.

Left Coast Right Mind on January 9, 2010 at 12:19 AM

I’ve already seen the movie. Trust me, none of you are prepared for how completely insane and fun it is. Yes, it’s profane. Yes, it’s violent. Yes, it’s politically incorrect. But it’s also a hell of a good time.

Besides…it’s got a hard “R” rating. If you let your kids see it, you deserve what comes to you as a result. Use some discretion, you prudes.

fusionaddict on January 9, 2010 at 12:25 AM

LCRM: One not on Rorschach – he was killed to protect an unnecessary conspiracy. Watchmen was kind of the genesis of the “existential/nihilist” modern school of comics – comic heroes have gone from heroes to heroes with feet of clay to nothing but clay.

The funny thing is the movie looks interesting – as a parody of both superheroes and the cynical modern angle on superheroes. Which I did not expect from Millar – the former but not the latter.

The world should be black and white. People develop shades of gray to justify their behavior.

Don’t know what the final rating is going to be for this, but it is certainly NOT for kids. And the fact that there are kids participating in this still gives me some uneasy feelings about the whole thing.

Hate to say it, but for the moment, I’m IN.

I think I’ll take my son to go see this.

It looks like it’ll be a fun movie.

SilverStar830 on January 9, 2010 at 2:04 AM

How old is your son? It will be at least as violent and gory as Watchmen. At least.

oddjob1138 on January 9, 2010 at 2:56 AM

So if a little girl swears like a sailor as the lead in a film that’s a bad thing, but if she just has a supporting role, well, then we can excuse that?

I don’t think so.

TTheo has no real concept that there are all kinds of conservtives, does he? I am a foul-mouthed, born in ATL, Southern Belle. Have been all 3, all my life. And will gladly kick your ass. Or shoot you. People have a right to decide their own morals, not have them dictated to them. Good gravy, its just a movie.

With McLovin! Gotta be worth the ticket price if it has Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Congrats, long time reader first time poster all because of you. Lets take a look at your “complaints” one at time.

The Superman story: This was elseworlds title, his origin was not permanently changed, it was a “what if”. Get a grip.

The Ultimate characters: Millar wrote Ultimates, X-men and Fantastic Four for the updated Ultimate Universe and if you think they are “politically correct” you really havent read any of his material including Wanted, Kick-Ass, or The Authority. Millar doing “PC” is like the Democrats spending less money. It doesn’t happen.

The Death of Captain America: Millar didn’t even write this, that was Ed Brubaker, nice try though.

They next time you try and read someone’s Wikipedia entry and trash them at least provide some context so you don’t sound like a mindless troll on the internet.

The second trailer is much better. That first one made the entire film look like it was going to be non-stop Tarantino-Sin City douchebaggery.

I’m having a hard time telling the difference in this thread between the lefty “Moral Hypocrite” trolls and the SoCon “Jesus hates this movie” trolls…

Both are so freaking tedious, and yet from different angles they share the completely erroneous belief that one apparently has to take vows and memorize a the catechism before becoming conservative.

The Moral Majority failed epicly guys… Welcome to the 21st century.

AP, I’m going to see it. I’ll do a thorough critique if you want to let you know whether its good or not. You’re in NYC? Good Gawd I’m sorry.

alohapundit on January 8, 2010 at 11:08 PM

And what, pray tell, is wrong with NYC? Incredible restaurants, wide variety of culture, and a low crime rate.

I used to have a t-shirt that said “If you are not from NYC you are a damn hick”.

Okay, maybe that’s over the top, maybe the city is a bit expensive, and maybe there are infringements on our freedom (see gun ownership). But I’ve never understood the hate for NYC.

The trailer I saw earlier for this flick had the little girl saying some pretty foul words. Will these parts still be in this movie? If so, Aren’t there some kind of “children being forced to use obsenity laws?” There is nothing “cute” about children cussing. In fact it’s down right creepy.

paraff on January 9, 2010 at 8:42 AM

I’m going to pass out a business card at the theaters for this one–for when people start copying the movie and get injured. Bring on the lawsuits!

Movie looks cool, though, I must say…

I’m going to have to agree with that.

My son goes to college in NYC, and he got a hoodie for Christmas with “I only like NY as a friend” on it.
