Video: “Kick-Ass” trailer
posted at 9:40 pm on January 8, 2010 by Allahpundit
I need to atone for subjecting you to the “A-Team” trailer earlier so here’s my penance. Turns out that the controversial “Hit-Girl” trailer I posted over the weekend isn’t for a “Hit-Girl” movie at all; she’s actually just a character in this flick, which looks to be wildly entertaining, if a bit … extreme.
Can’t quite tell yet if it’s a send-up of superhero flicks or an anarchic homage to them, but I’ll probably pay $15 or whatever the ridiculous going rate is in NYC to find out.

A movie about everyday people wearing costumes and fighting crime, and one of them’s female?
Oh – Mystery Men without Janeane Garofalo…. that could work. Plus, McLovin!!!

Geez, looks like people cannot have a little fun now and then.
Yes, Hot Air is a wonderful site to expose the left for what they are, and to revive our belief in Constitutional Governance.
Yeah But!, we can fun every now and then – it is alright.

Of course, what is being missed here is that, in real life, a lot of people have tried to be superheros. It is so popular, in fact, that it has spawned several franchises that have spread across the country. You probably have heard of a number of them: for a long time, the most well known were the Bloods and the Crips.

More putrid sludge from Hollyweird…
No thanks…

By bucsox’s logic just about any movie is unChristian, especially if somebody is killed. Additionally, movies like The Planet of the Apes is a no-no as it mocks the role of man in this world which mocks God.
The greatest gift my Lord and Saviour gave me is free will. Y’all can figure out what that really means.

I Agree.
Hurricanes? As in North Carolina?

I was kind of up in the air regarding this movie, but McLovin in a superhero costume sold me.

Let me clear that one up for you. The comic book that it’s based upon is written by Mark Millar, and Millar is known for writing…..well every superhero that he gets his hands upon…..as pretty much a complete jerkass (except for Superman, who Millar has a childlike adoration of).
Millar is also the chief perpetrator – though he was far from the only one – of Marvel Comics’ “Civil War” storyline from a couple years back, which was a social commentary upon the Bush Administration and the Iraq War. That particular storyline had Millar (and others) completely destroying DECADES of character development and having iconic Marvel heroes like Iron Man or Mr. Fantastic (of the Fantastic Four) become fascists who build concentration camps in another dimension to house any superhero who disagrees with them (not to mention deputizing supervillains such as Venom and Bullseye, who combined have a body count in the THOUSANDS, to hunt down other heroes).
So, short answer: it’s the former. Mark Millar wrote Kick-Ass to lampoon superheroes because he hates superheroes. Even though he makes a LOT of money writing them every month.

Winner for the stupidest comment I’ve ever seen on this or any other blog.
So gangs = superhero wannabe nerds? Right.
Cuz these people look like bloodthirsty, sociopathic drugdealing killers, right?

oddjob1138 on January 9, 2010 at 1:39 PM
Go watch History Channel’s Gangland then, and learn something. The gangs Count mentions did start out as vigilante groups to defend neighborhoods from other more-organized crime, but were corrupted from within as the lure of drug abuse, drug money, and turf wars with other gangs took their toll.
Granted, that process didn’t take very long, but in the beginning you could reasonably say “it seemed like a good idea at the time.”
Blacksmith on January 10, 2010 at 1:19 AM
Vigilante != Superhero. Some superheroes are vigilantes. He said they started out trying to be SUPERHEROES. Which isn’t the same thing.
Also, the founder of the Bloods would refute that typical liberal revisionist version of the story:
http://www.riotsound.com/hip-hop/rap/interviews/T-Rodgers/index.php
“Was Black Stone here first or was the Crips here first or did they start at the same time with the demise of the Black Panther Party and that whole Black movement?”
So, yeah, believe the network that is doing this:

The “superhero” genre is based on the idea of empowered people going out and breaking the law in order to enforce their own idea of justice, with the implication that the authorities are too weak or too corrupt to do it properly. Their superpowers are just a way of giving them the power of guns without actually having them use guns. In the real world, the people who do this end up as gang members or serial killers.
Count to 10 on January 10, 2010 at 9:25 AM
It’s a storytelling genre. It’s modern mythology. It’s FANTASY. It’s not real.
Let me guess: Harry Potter is teaching kids witchcraft and Star Wars teaches people Pantheism?
Now I have to admit, that people who can’t differentiate between fantasy and reality would be the very definition of a mental health problem. But it doesn’t make them all serial killers and gang bangers.
I would LOVE for you to point to some famous serial killers who were only doing so to stand up for Truth, Justice and the American way though. Ted Bundy was saving us all from young women? Richard Ramirez was saving us from sleeping through the night? Or maybe you have been watching too much Dexter? You know he’s not real, right?
oddjob1138 on January 10, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Would you include The Minutemen or Neighborhood Watch programs to gang members or serial killers? Aren’t they vigilantes as well?
RedRobin145 on January 10, 2010 at 1:28 PM
Ah Minuite Men. Perfect example. They are all gang bangers and serial killers now, right? Because it doesn’t take long. They also fantasize about being in spandex too I’ll bet.

Which one habitually endorses actions that are against the law?
Count to 10 on January 10, 2010 at 3:47 PM
Manson and his “family”. The SLA. Heck, the KKK.
Count to 10 on January 10, 2010 at 3:50 PM
In reference to the earlier discussion about God’s sense of humor, I favor this quote by Voltaire:
“God is a comedian playing to an audience that is afraid to laugh.”
That said, I still feel the way I did before…. My reaction to this movie will hinge on whether Hollywood has the good sense to direct the marketing AWAY from kids. More Leon the Professional than Spy Kids, you know?
Animator Girl on January 10, 2010 at 4:06 PM
I don’t get it. Can you please explain how the Manson Family started out as wannabe superheros or vigilantes? They were trying to illegally enforce laws? Taking bad guys to justice? Manson thought the cops couldn’t do their job so he decided to form a Justice League to uphold American values? Really?
The SLA was a self proclaimed REVOLUTIONARY VANGUARD ARMY that commited BANK ROBBERIES. Vigilantes would try to PREVENT bank robberies. At least ones that fancied themselves superheroes. And the KKK was created to restore white supremacy in the post-Civil War South. Hardly a vigilante organization. They may have also participated in some vigilante activities but they were and are still today a terrorist organization.
Here’s a better example for your argument: The Bald Knobbers. Contemporaries of the KKK. Except that they meted out their own justice for crimes outside of the law.
