PPP on Massachusetts Senate: “This has become a losable race for Democrats”; Update: Dems prepping in case of Brown win?
posted at 4:45 pm on January 8, 2010 by Allahpundit
My feelings about the chances of a GOP win here are the same as my feelings were about the chances of a Red Sox world championship before 2004: I’ll believe it when I see it.
But I did see it, didn’t I?
-At this point a plurality of those planning to turn out oppose the health care bill. The massive enthusiasm gap we saw in Virginia is playing itself out in Massachusetts as well. Republican voters are fired up and they’re going to turn out. Martha Coakley needs to have a coherent message up on the air over the last ten days that her election is critical to health care passing and Ted Kennedy’s legacy- right now Democrats in the state are not feeling a sense of urgency.
-Scott Brown’s favorables are up around 60%, a product of his having had the airwaves to himself for the last week. By comparison Bob McDonnell’s were at 55% right before his election and Chris Christie’s were only at 43%. Coakley’s campaign or outside groups need to tie Brown’s image to national Republicans and knock him down a notch over the final week of the campaign.
This has become a losable race for Democrats- but it could also be easily winnable if Coakley gets her act together for the last week of the campaign.
Obligatory caveats: PPP got the NY-23 race wildly wrong and doesn’t offer any hard numbers yet to illustrate the trends it’s seeing here. Bear in mind too that pollsters from both sides of the aisle have an incentive to spin things Brown’s way. His only chance of winning is to have Republican turnout hugely outnumber Democratic turnout; every poll that shows him doing well fuels hope on the right, which motivates GOP voters, and fuels terror on the left, which motivates Dem voters not to be complacent about the likelihood of victory by staying home. In a post a few days ago, lefty Nate Silver pegged Coakley’s lead as probably around 15 points — before sternly warning readers never to take a special election for granted and insisting he wouldn’t be surprised to see the vote count last all night, natch. Every time Murtha runs for reelection, there’s inevitably some poll that excites righties by showing his challenger closer than expected, and every time he ends up blowing them out in the end. That’s what I suspect will happen here, but since it is after all a turnout game, make sure you circulate the PPP data to any conservative or independent friends you might have in Massachusetts who need firing up. Given the stakes, a Brown upset would be the biggest GOP congressional victory since … when, exactly? ’94?
You’ll find further anecdotal evidence that the Democrats are really, truly worried about this race at Legal Insurrection. I wonder how close it would have to get before every Catholic in the state gets a framed photo of Teddy and a single red rose in the mail courtesy of the DNC.
Update: Oh my. Maybe Brown is for real.
The notion of a Republican winning Ted Kennedy’s seat remains unlikely, despite (or perhaps because of) the recent hubbub around the race.
But it’s a real enough possibility that Democrats have started to consider the question. There are, it appears, two ways health care reform could still pass, in theory, after a victory by state Sen. Scott Brown in Massachusetts a week from Tuesday.
The first is simple, if controversial: Get it through between the time the polls close and the new senator is sworn in…
The second path is a different kind of heavy lift. The Senate does not, in fact, need to act on the bill anymore. It has already passed a version. With Brown seated, the White House could prevail upon House Democrats to pass the Senate bill as written…

As I’ve said before… with the Anger we have in the electorate, EVERY STATE is in play.
The Dems seriously over reached with their agenda, and are scaring the heck out of their OWN base…

they’ll dig Ed up and have him be available at campaign stops next week if this trend continues. Afterall, Coakley is the corronated one.

I fully expect Coakley to dig up ol’ Ted and parade him around at her events, telling everyone that he would still be alive if only national health care had been available.

But should I see it, I will open many a beer.
Or maybe I should just spend the beer money on Brown’s campaign now.

Not quite…
In NY-23 the voting machines were electronic and it was found later that they were hacked. But our ‘Free and Independent’ Press just said, “Oh, well, at least a Democrat won.”
For what’s at stake in this race, I am sure voter fraud and corruption will reach new hights.
Seven Percent Solution on January 8, 2010 at 4:54 PM
OK, so let’s say Brown pulls off a win. It HAS to be a win big enough to eliminate him being Frankened. If it’s a squeaker, he will end up losing in the recounts.
As for the Dede fiasco, this situation is a little different in that Brown is not a third party candidate overtaking a Rino.

And therein lies the essence of Martha’s victory: “from tiny ACORNS do mighty Coakley wins grow.”

True, but at least in this case Rasmussen has shown a narrowing race from earlier polls back in early December. Special elections are almost always low turnout (except Atlanta’s mayoral election a few months ago), and libs have no reason to be motivated. Everything has to fall in place for Brown to win, though. I firmly believe god has a sense of humor, and Kennedy’s seat going to someone who says he’ll kill the government take-over of health care is just too delicious I think for even god to pass up.
SouthernGent on January 8, 2010 at 5:02 PM
libs are not very smart and I suspect some will vote for the Kennedy on the ballot thinking they are voting for a democrat. That will take votes away from Coakley..
derft on January 8, 2010 at 5:02 PM
It’s improbable that Brown can win, but it’s not impossible.
It would be beyond awesome if he did, and it would be solely because of the snubbing of Coakley to the voters. She went on vacation for several weeks, completely disappearing, while Scott Brown was campaigning and holding events.
Coakley pretty much is trying to “run out the clock”–she’s having to hold a fundraiser in Washington rather than Massachusetts–because she does not want her record known, which may even turn off liberals, but certainly will turn off independents.
Enoxo on January 8, 2010 at 5:05 PM
is this going to be another NY23 thing where Coakleys pushbutton will be next to teddy’s name? Scozzafava had her name on a ballot after she dropped out and had it one there in like three spots. One can only think that a guy as perennial as teddy will reach back from the grave and shake us with something.

This seat is a direct link the the ol’ Camelot days.
This seat is still warm with radicalism.
This seat is in the middle of the cog at the center of the democrat electoral machinery.
This seat puts the 60 majority in peril 11 months prior to Nov.
This seat has finally enjoyed the victory of healthcare corruption, that was sought for by Kennedy for decades.
If this seat turns red…dude. The fallout will be incredible. Even if he’s within single digits, it’ll be a amazing.

Brown has a winning argument that MA already has its healthcare, it shouldn’t have to subsidize a national healthcare boondoggle. He probably will run strong with women. Coakley has run an absentee campaign, and even the Globe is on her for going easy on horrific child rape cases. Add in the national apprehension about an unopposed Crat agenda, and this is a definite possibility.
But then, Steele apparently is too busy selling books to have given this much thought. Can Sarah help here? Her negs are probably high in MA.

If nothing else, these new stories show the Democrats are trying to activate their base in Massachusetts and scare them into coming out to vote in the special election. Given the loopiness of some Dems, this might actually work (if Coakley started running ads tying Brown together with Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and/or Rush Limbaugh to really get the foam going, it wouldn’t be a big surprise).
How well that’s going to work right now is open to question, especially if the higher profile of the election starts motivating swing voters to come out and cast ballots for change, still a major snowstorm east of I-91 on Jan. 18-19 would still go a long way towards helping Brown’s Election Day chances.
jon1979 on January 8, 2010 at 5:55 PM

I made this point earlier somewhere (where the heck was it?? :) – It’s possible that Mass Dems are not likely to be fired up about ObamaCare because they already have a State plan, and they may very well feel that ObamaCare will be a less desirable alternative to what they have now, so they may not be willing to sacrifice on the sword of Kennedy’s “legacy”.
