Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on January 7, 2010 by Allahpundit

“A poll of GOP insiders suggests that ex-AK Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has little support among the party’s professional class — and maybe that’s just how she wants it.

“In a survey of 109 party leaders, political professionals and pundits, Palin finished 5th on the list of candidates most likely to win the party’s ’12 WH nomination. Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney (R) was the overwhelming choice…”

***
“At issue is the role of David Keene, head of the American Conservative Union which organizes CPAC. In September, POLITICO reported that Keene asked FedEx for between $2 million and $3 million to get the group’s support in a bitter legislative battle with rival UPS.

“A source close to the Palin camp says that request led to a decision to stay away from the upcoming CPAC conference, calling it a forum that will place ‘special interests over core beliefs’ and ‘pocketbook over policy.’

“‘That’s not what CPAC should be about and people are tiring,’ the source said. ‘Palin is taking a stance against this just as she did in Alaska.’”

***
“Palin had a reflexive tendency to refer to Biden as ‘O’Biden,’ Schmidt revealed. He says other people on the campaign staff came up with a solution. ‘It was multiple people — and I wasn’t one of them — who all said at the same time, ‘Just say, ‘Can I call you Joe?’ which she did.’”

I say NO! She asked, “Can I call you Joe” because it went along with her comment to him “Say it isn’t/ain’t so, Joe.” The only way that line would have worked is for her to call him Joe.

She tells the story in her book about how she, and a number of the campaign staff, kept accidentally saying it and finally somebody told her to just ask to call him Joe to avoid it. She says that she was mortified at the thought of calling him by his first name, but was told to ask him and that that he’d say certainly say yes. So, she did.

Yes, but Schmidt is making Palin out to be some bimbow that he had to rein in by swooping to tell her to take a break from the debate. He was holding her back by trying to moderate her instincts (answers), then was shocked to find out she was having a bit of a problem remembering all the good moderate things to say?!? Spare me the drama, Schmidt.

“O, please. Palin detailed all of this months ago on page 289 of her book:

During rehearsals, I accidently called Randy “Senator O’Biden” — a slip of the tongue combination of Obama and Biden. The blunder struck too often, even tripping up campaign staffers. (Jay Leno later made the same slip on his new talk show, so we were in good company.) We laughed about it but knew that if I said it even once during the debate, it would be disastrous. Then somebody said, “You ought to just call him Joe.” . . . So that’s what we decided I would do. We had no idea my mic would already be hot when I walked onstage, crossed over to his turf, and said, “Can I call you Joe?” The “expert” post-debate analysis was that my question was a cleverly devised strategy to disarm my opponent. Yeah, right.

the_nile on January 8, 2010 at 12:50 AM

Palin wasn’t picked to appeal to Hillary Clinton voters. We all knew most of the Hillary lovers were going to back Obama once Her Highness got around to endorsing him too. Palin was picked because she was pro-life and didn’t have any Republican contingent that actively hated her.

As someone who spent the summer of ’08 hoping and praying for a Palin pick, let me tell you that it has nothing to do with that obsession of the Left, affirmative action, and everything to do with her qualifications.

Backtrack to that summer. Gas cost $4.50 a gallon in some parts of the country. Barack was trying to be “change” and “bipartisan.” The country hated the GOP in Washington. No one had an ounce of executive experience. McCain was too moderate to excite the base and too not moderate to appeal to independents.

So what’s a candidate to do save to pick a young rock star who took on her own corrupt party, had 75% approval ratings from the opposing party (and about 90% within her own party), and is one fo the foremost energy experts in the country?

Sounds like a plan. That Palin is pro-life but not old, crusty, male, and the type of person who will never think the words “crisis pregnancy” in his life, was an added bonus.

therightwinger on January 8, 2010 at 12:50 AM

You are right. What frightens me is I was once very impressed with her. She sold former governor Murkowski’s jet. She talked tough against the enviro-sabotage of our oil industry. But then she got a huge new tax hike on that same industry and couldn’t resist playing to the populist, anti-capitalist element in our state. She was way over her head thinking a (absolutely fantastic Calgary-based) Trans-Canada could build a natural gas pipe without direct negotiations with the big oil companies, BP, Conoco-Phillips, and ExxonMobil.

Our state is rapidly heading for disaster based on the policies she inaugurated. Now she is saying great things again but God forbid she is ever in the White House. She just does not match words with deeds.

I hope that is not beating up on her.

The fact is that it is the other side that have high hopes for what a president can do – how the leader can fix or transform or save the nation.

On our side, we are realists who just hope for a chief administrator who can do his (or her) job, keep the books balanced, maintain the defence, and not screw things up.

I’m really not interested in being inspired. I am interested in a leader that shows some sensibility. Like Palin.

This is just the latest “sky is falling” canard being spread by the hate Palin “industry” up here. Yes,it is an industry… comprised of local bloggers, a few talk radio hosts, The Anchorage Daily News, and more than a few Republican legislators (read good old boys). Our constitution requires that our resources be developed for the “maximum” benefit of the people of Alaska and it seems Sarah Palin took this seriously.
The oil tax she championed that was passed by the legislature imposed a graduated tax (yes, progressive) on the oil companies based on the price of oil, but it is much more complicated than that as there are capitol credits for exploration expenses also. The hate Palin industry are all jumping up and down claiming that this relatively new tax/credit formula is going to chase the oil industry out of the state and before you know it the pipeline will be pumping nothing but air.
The reality is that this is a new approach, the numbers aren’t in yet, and it may or may not need to be adjusted in the future. I think Sarah would call this “common sense”.
By the way, we now have two competing groups working on a new gas pipeline and one of them, Trans Canada, has partnered with Exxon Mobile so it appears there is “some” interest from the oil companies in Sarah’s gas pipeline project.

PLUS….. DON’T YOU KNOW THAT ALL OILERS IN TEXAS ARE ASKING PERRY TO COPY SARAH PALIN’S MECHANISMS FOR SEVERANCE TAX?

Of course you don’t want details.

Your present Governor’s favorability is 70%+. Ask yourself a question: Is there a difference in policy between the Former Governor and the Former Lt. Governor?

NO ASHLEY. STOP YOUR IDIOCY.

I am dismayed by
CPAC shakedown of FedEx.
We are just as bad.

New Broom sweeps cleaner.
Palin could be the New Broom.
She has my support.

We all need to care about the GOP establishment/insiders. Not only were there accusations of rigged primaries in 2008 (in Washington and Florida, as I recall, and probably elsewhere), but their backing does make a difference in elections–Hoffman would have stood a much better chance in NY23 if the establishment hadn’t backed Scozzafava. The GOP has money (none of mine), they have name recognition (Gingrich’s support may have cost him the respect of many conservatives, but there are plenty who were not paying attention to NY) and there are many people who have not yet figured out just how bad the GOP is.

This is why the establishment needs to be unestablished. Thank Heaven for the Tea Party movement–ironically, this administration may end up being the best thing that ever happened to conservatism–if our country survives long enough for it to matter.

To respond to comments upthread I havent seen answered-Biden had to rush to his mother’s bedside yesterday as she is extremely ill. Not surprising really, she is 92.

Whoever said Obama was like Icarus, come on. Icarus at least was sorta cool. Icarly would be more accurate wouldnt it?

Well, duh !!! They don’t get it … THAT’S SARAH’S APPEAL !!!

Note to Republican “insiders” – you are NOT going to shove Mitt down our throat like you shoved McCain on us for “our” candidate.

It ain’t gonna be Mitt.

“In a survey of 109 party leaders, political professionals and pundits, Palin finished 5th on the list of candidates most likely to win the party’s ‘12 WH nomination. Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney (R) was the overwhelming choice…”

I haven’t read all the comments but it sounds to me that there are many folks who need to take a stroll down MEMORY LANE. Let’s wander back to 1976 the “professional politicians and pundits” ignored the people and installed Gerald Ford as their candidate for the upcoming election.

I’m not saying that Gov. Palin is the answer but I can guarantee that these folks don’t know the question. They never have and never will because they are no longer interested in serving the American people but what each election does for them in prestige or bank account.

Or wander back to this time last year. McCain was clearly not the choice of the base but was pushed on the party by the “smart kids” who thought that out liberaling liberals was the way to win the White House. Sarah Palin was the hail mary pass to shore up support when the so-called moderate Democrats didn’t come flocking to team McCain in droves.

I wouldn’t say it either, except that the GOP, by their blind dismissal of “the people,” risks unleashing a force beyond their smug control.

I agree with you in theory but I have to admit that the last election was a tough one for me. I didn’t see anyone that I thought was either a true conservative or the determination to want the job. But I do think we let the media pick Sen. McCain. I really hate to be dismissive of Sen. McCain because I think there are so many reasons to honor him. I can’t speak for everyone but extended life in D.C. separates these folks from the real world and they no longer know who the represent.

Steele was right about one thing…..paraphrasing…..GOP/Whigs YOU SUCK!!!!!!

I heard awhile back that CPAC was turning into an extortion type outfit, shame.

As for Rubio at CPAC? It’s a terrible shame….I hope I’m wrong but he could be positioned by Jeb to be Romney a VP pick in 2012 (he’d a perfect counter-balance to Romney. A Romney-Rubio ticket would give the Bush family access to the White House for years to come.

If the Cocktail GOP hate the Hillbilly from Wasilly then it just makes me respect her more.

Memo to RNC……after a year you are just as sucky as you were!!!!

Sarah Palin Barack Obama was an Affirmative Action candidate to pander to the disaffected Hillary Clinton elitist voters. Now she is the GOP’s Democrats’ great Half-White hope.

All the heavens will open, world hunger will be resolved, all cancer will be cured, everyone will have complete prosperity, and we will achieve world peace… free health care will be provided for the sick, green jobs will be given to the jobless, the rise of the oceans will be reversed, science will ve restored to its rightful place, all nations will love us, and we will achieve world peace…if only we can get a Republican our Messiah, Barack Obama, in the White House.

Ronald Reagan was belittled and dismissed by the Republican party establishment for years before he was nominated. They called him an extremist, outside the mainstream of American. They declared that Reagan Reagan could only appeal to the far right of his own party and would lose in a general election by a landslide and drag other Republicans down with him.

Let’s face it, these establishment guys ain’t too bright.

I’ve been noticing a LOT of familiar names from those days to today. It’s the same group of inbred nightmares running the party today as then.

I’ll stick with Sarah.
